HSR Psychology became a social enterprise in December 2017, over halfway through the financial year. Our reflections and experiences from 2017/18 have allowed us to put more in place to improve the services we provide, whilst assessing our social impact in the years to come. As a service, we are keen to ensure our social impact is measured by the progress we make towards our vision and mission. Looking back over our first year trading, we have come so far. We started off with a very small team of 3, and now have a team of 6. Originally, we were only providing educational psychology services, but we have now expanded to provide clinical psychology services. Now, we can meet a broader range of needs in home, school and community settings so that children and young people can be happy, safe and ready for life’s challenges. I hope you enjoy reading this review of our first year of trading.

HSR Psychology Annual Review
Our social mission is the central purpose of our social enterprise.
Why do we measure our social impact? To ensure that we maximise our positive social impact and that we are working towards our vision and mission we believe it is vital to benchmark our achievements through regular measurement.

What have we addressed? Children and young people’s educational, mental health and wellbeing needs. What social improvements have we facilitated? At HSR Psychology we have supported the individuals we worked with to cope with life’s challenges. We have increased their resilience which in turn decreased their need for additional support from statutory services. How have our team had a social impact? Our educational and child psychologists have provided assessments, interventions and training, with the focus of having a positive impact in the lives of children and young people to maximise their potential. 6
HSR Psychology Annual Review
Our educational and child psychologists have been working in a range of schools across the North West, and one in Leeds. HSR Psychology had a positive impact among students, staff and parents. Our clinical psychologists have provided ongoing interventions for complex mental health needs to improve children’s and young people’s quality of life, mental health and wellbeing. Dr Bridie Gallagher provided training around self-harm to a range of professionals to enable them to meet more needs within their roles. What services do we provide to help us to make a social impact? We provide a broad range of services, including initial discussions, specific assessments, reports, interventions, training, and school services.
What other actions have we taken to make a social impact? We have been sharing knowledge and experience to raise awareness and knowledge around additional needs, including mental health through our social media accounts. We have also been busy networking and sharing advice with professionals, so that more children and young people can have their needs understood and addressed. How do we report our social impact? We report our social impact internally through team meetings, and externally through emails, newsletters and publishing our annual review. We also have information about our social impact published on our website.

Our CPD event This event was on the topic of self-harm and using positive psychology. 20 people from a range of professional backgrounds attended our first CPD event. The feedback we received was very positive and showed that we would have a positive social impact through the professionals using the information learnt from our training within their roles.

Two intern placements provided We provided one placement for a student who was interested in psychology and one placement for a student on an Erasmus placement who wanted to develop her marketing skills. Meet Leanna… Leanna was with HSR Psychology on an Erasmus placement for five months. Leanna had a personal interest in psychology and the needs we were helping children and young people with. During Leanna’s placement she really helped us to grow our online presence through

social media, photoshoots and planning. Leanna also arranged the CPD event with our assistant educational psychologist, Sarah Ward, and she designed some beautiful graphics. Leanna really enjoyed her placement at HSR Psychology and was able to team up with
Nuttersons, who created our website, to learn more about the marketing side of things. Leanna had a passion for supporting children and young people with mental health through sharing accurate information about how people could access support if they needed it.
We have worked with the following schools and trusts between 01 April 2017 and 31 March 2018

During the year 2017/18 our psychologists worked with a broad range of people for assessments and interventions. One young person was having a combined intervention with both our clinical psychologist and our educational psychologist. Daniel was 23, and initially referred by his mum, who had concerns about his social anxiety. During the initial discussion with Daniel, our educational psychologist was able to identify

other areas of needs which extended past social anxiety. Due to his mental health needs, a programme of intervention was designed which included regular sessions with a clinical psychologist to provide cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and regular risk assessments for low moods. Once this stage of the intervention was complete, our educational psychologist would provide sessions using a positive psychology and strength-based approach to support Daniel in
his university education and in finding employment. Following our input, Daniel’s mood had increased and he had a greater understanding of his needs and strategies to meet those needs. Daniel was able to receive support from community services within a group setting, which helped to ease his social anxiety through a gentle and compassionate approach, and meeting with like-minded young people.
Thank you We have had a lot of help this year to get up and running so our main thank you is for Nuttersons.

We love to celebrate our team’s hard work and dedication to helping children and young people to be happy, safe and ready for life’s challenges. Within our annual review we select one team member to recognise their hard work over the year. It’s a very difficult choice as everyone has worked so hard, but this year we have chosen... Dr Julie Alfrey! Julie has been a reliable and positive member of our team during this year. Julie has always helped when needed and has provided an incredible service to the schools and parents she has worked with, we always receive very positive feedback about her. Julie provided services to one education trust and her hard work led to follow-up input being requested and word of mouth recommendations. We have many people specifically requesting to work with Julie and we don’t blame them!
Just wanted to say many thanks for all the hard work you have done this year. Everything you have done has been of high quality. Your reports have been great, your communication has been prompt and you have worked really well with the team. Many thanks for everything you have done for the service to date it is much appreciated. Kevin
