French Market Festival St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church dates back to 1929. While its annual French-inspired free festival is a relative newcomer, at 20 years old, it has, nevertheless, established a firm identity for itself as a community fixture on the near Northside. The food is a big reason: seafood crepes, escargot en croute, French onion soup, beignets, tarte flambé, quiche, French dip roast beef and Provencal chicken are all available — even Marcel Proust’s madeleines. There’s also live entertainment, artisan’s booths, a bake sale and children’s games and food until 5 p.m. St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 4217 Central Ave., Sept. 7, noon - 10 p.m. sjoa.org/frenchmarket Penrod Arts Fair Whether you think it marks the end of summer or the beginning of fall, Penrod has a knack for usually getting the weather gods to play ball. Over 300 artists, six stages of live entertainment, an extensive children’s area and over 50 arts-related exhibitors — plus plenty of food and drink vendors make Penrod one of the nation’s largest single-day art fairs. The festival closes on Sunday at 6:45 p.m. with a jam involving all the participating festival bands. Military Park, 601 W. New York St., September 12-15, indyirishfest.com

You meet people at festivals and renew acquaintances year after year.” That quotes by the father of bluegrass himself, Bill Monroe. His music is still bringing people together yearly at the Bill Monroe Bean Blossum Bluegrass Festival, which, this year, features instrument workshops and a bluegrass camp for kids. The lineup is too extensive to list here, but the biggest names in contemporary bluegrass are making a stop at the fest. Bill Monroe Memorial Music Park and Campground, June 8 -15 billmonroemusicpark.com IMAF The Independent Arts and Music Festival takes over the First Friday favorite, the Harrison Center. MUSIC FESTIVALS REGION Summercamp You can never grow too old for summer camp, and Chilcothe, Illinois’ Summercamp music festival is here to prove it. Boasting some of the biggest jam band and EDM acts around, this Memorial Day weekend event serves as a cordial welcome to the year’s festival season. Nestled into the heart of Illinois, this three-day bonanza gives fans the chance to camp at Three Sisters Park and enjoy premier live music acts. From headliners Trey Anastasio Band, Umphrey’s McGee, and more., to budding performers like Big Gigantic and Papadosio, there’s an act here for every hippie. Chillicothe, Ill., May 24 summercampfestival.com Chicago Blues Festival The largest free blues festival in the world returns to the Windy City’s Millennium Park; three days, five stages, over 500,000 listeners. Headliners this year include James Cotton, Irma Thomas, Bobby Rush, Otis Clay and so many more. There’s no excuse for not enjoying this fest: it’s free! Chicago, Ill., June 6-9 cityofchicago.org Orion Music and More Metallica threw the first annual Orion M&M festival for themselves last year in Atlantic City. Each band member picked their fave bands, introduced them onstage and picked a host of their other favorite things to feature on the grounds (including a creepy haunted house and a classic car exhibition). They’re back with another festival of faves this year featuring bass god Bassnectar, Datsik, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Deftones and more. Plus, Metallica themselves will perform. Detroit, Mich., June 8-9 orionmusicandmore.com

Bonnaroo A place to be hot and mosquito-bitten and not even care because the tunes are so great, Bonnaroo returns to farmlands just outside Manchester yearly to unite hippies, metal heads, rockers, comedy and more. This year features Paul McCartney, Mumford and Sons, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Bjork, Wilco, Pretty Lights, The Wu-Tang Clan and so many more. It’s actually overwhelming to read through the lineup. Manchester, Tenn., June 13-16 bonnaroo.com Spring Awakening Headliners for this EDM-focused fest include Bassnectar, Calvin Harris and Moby DJ, as well as a host of other DJs, producers and other sound creators. The fest is hosted on Soldier Field, but we’re not sure if you can get into the seats to chill out and watch the magic happen on stage. Glow sticks surprisingly not allowed. Chicago, Ill., June 14-16, springawakeningfestival.com Electric Forest This EDM and jam-heavy fest features headliners like Pretty Lights, Passion Pit and Knife Party, and shares a few acts with other regional fests, like The String Cheese Incident and Lotus. Grab your spirithoods and fuzzy boots and join the rest of the psy-heads in the silent disco, or explore the art installations scattered through the woods. And don’t forget to explore the Sherwood Forest at night, because organizers insure it’s all lit up with a spectacular light display. Rothbury, Mich., June 27-30 electricforestfestival.com

Summerfest Organizers call it the world’s largest music festival, and we might have to agree. Created by former Milwaukee mayor Henry Maier in the ‘60s, Summerfest is currently held on 75 acres of permanent festival grounds, and celebrated over two weeks. This year’s lineup features Imagine Dragons, Diplo, Billy Idol, Foreigner, Styx and a bunch more weird acts that are available for the absurdly low price of $15 a day. In fact, if you can figure out a way to get to a Pick N’ Save in Wisconsin, you can buy a pass for all 11 days for just $60. Milwaukee, Wis., July 2-7 summerfest.com Bunbury Bunbury spun off from Midpoint Music Festival for the first time last year, with crowd-pleasing headliners and a supremely easy layout. Cruise the Ohio River riverwalk as you meander from stage to stage. Headliners this year include Fun., MGMT and The National. We think Sunday is the best day: The National, Belle and Sebastian, Yo La Tengo, Camera Obscura and Black Joe Lewis are all set up. Cheap, close to Indy and packed with actual activities for kids: we urge you to give Bunbury a chance. Cincinnati, Ohio, July 12-14 bunburyfestival.com Forecastle Festival Louisville’s easy, breezy riverside fest Forecastle is a NUVO favorite because of the environmental workshops and speakers it hosts. But it really is mostly about the music, which is reliably solid . Headliners for 2013 include Big Boi, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, The Avett Brothers and Robert Plant. Louisville, Ken., July 12-14 forecastlefest.com

All Good Festival A slow, leisurely weekend of jams and camping. More relaxed than Bonnaroo, more scenic than fests at Klipsch. The lineup features former members of the Grateful Dead, Pretty Lights, former NUVO cover lady Grace Potter and her band The Nocturnals, among many more. There’s plenty of space to spread out in traditional camping, but All Good also offers glamping, for the glamorous festival goers among us. Legend Valley, OH., July 18 -21 Pitchfork Music Festival Once the reigning king of hip music blogs everywhere, and now... something like that, Pitchfork started throwing itself a festival in its headquarters around seven years ago. Since, the lineup has skewed from alt-rock and sincere folk to trendier noise acts. This year, it appears they’ve thrown in the towel, bringing the weirdest headlining pair of the year: R. Kelly and Bjork. If that’s not your cup of weird, urinated-in tea, you can enjoy Joanna Newsom, Solange, The Breeders and MIA, along with other buzzy touring acts. Chicago, Ill., July 19-21 pitchforkmusicfestival.com Lollapalooza All hail Lollapalooza, the grandaddy of major rock fests in Chicago. Founded by Jane’s Addiction, the fest was formerly a traveling rock carnival of sorts until a series of fits and starts from 1997-2005. Now, its permanent home is in Grant Park, which, this year, will host Mumford and Sons, The Killers, The Cure and much more. More than 160,000 attend the fest yearly; and yes, Perry Farrell is still involved. He’s curating international editions of the event, with the most recent being scheduled in Tel Aviv. Brugge Brasserie Brugge introduced Indiana to Belgium’s beer traditions when Ted Miller founded the brewery in 2005, changing the landscape of the state’s craft beer industry. Specially made tables with slots for the traditional pommes frites, outdoor seating with a view of the Broad Ripple strip and an expansion on the upper level party room, make Brugge a popular destination. FILM MAY FAST & FURIOUS 6 My son couldn’t be more excited about the release of the sixth –– sixth! –– installment in the testosterone and gasoline-fueled car race series. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Dwayne Johnson star and … wait a minute, didn’t one of those actors’ characters die two movies ago? Nevermind, I’m sure they’ll be a PERFECTLY LOGICAL EXPLANATION in a movie that includes a scene where an airplane crashes to the ground while a car crashes out of the airplane. Hooray for Hollywood! Box Office Release Date (May 24) Now You See Me Magicians robbing banks! The cast includes Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Melanie Laurent, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. Impressive. Eisenberg, Fisher, Harrelson and Franco play a group of magicians dubbed the Four Horsemen who start pulling off a series of Robin Hood style

crimes. It’s all building to something very big and cool, if they don’t get stopped by Johnny Law. Hope the filmmakers remember that films like this can only work if the magic tricks could actually be done by magicians. If they show impossible stunts, all credibility goes right out the window. Box Office Release Date (May 31) Style Wars Follow young graffiti artists in 1980s New York City as they define hip –– hop culture and struggle to express themselves in this documentary. The result: 1,000 years in the future, Space Ranger Will turns to his son, Ranger-in-Training Jaden, for help when their ship crashes on Earth, which has become a savage jungle planet after humanity left the planet. A & E CALENDAR comedy –– James Franco, Craig Robinson, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, Jason Segel and Rihanna –– all play versions of themselves. It could be a riot –– mild-mannered Cera is presented as a pervy cokehead, which sounds amusing –– or it could end up so stuffed with inside jokes and Hollywood references that it sinks under the weight of its own self-satisfaction. You know, the way Franco did when he cohosted the Academy Awards a couple of years ago. Box Office Release Date (June 12)

Man of Steel The Internship Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson could have done a sequel to the smash hit comedy Wedding Crashers, but they opted to reunite for an original story instead. Thank you, Vince and Owen! The guys play out-of-work forty-something watch salesmen who decide to try for new careers by becoming interns at Google, which is known for its almost-preschoolishly colorful offices and numerous progressive perks. The demands of the internship program are high and the men find themselves competing with younger interns that are just as skilled and hungry as they are –– if not more so. Sounds like an interesting, unusual premise –– a novelty in the summer season. Box Office Release Date (June 7) Rapture-Palooza Do you know Craig Robinson? Darryl from The Office? The star of Peebles? Hot Tub Time Machine ? Robinson is so good I’d go to a Smurfs movie if he was in it. But he wouldn’t be because he’s too cool to do that. Here’s the set-up for his latest. The Rapture happens and a billion people go to Heaven. Meanwhile, Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) and her boyfriend Ben (John Francis Daley) are left behind in Seattle. Their apocalyptic ennui is interrupted when Satan (Robinson) moves to the neighborhood and sets his romantic sights on Lindsey. The red-band trailer is funny and it’s got Craig Robinson. Hell yes! Box Office Release Date (June 7) This Is The End This could be very good or downright insufferable. The cast of the apocalypse

Man of Steel The latest incarnation of the Superman story, directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen), stars Henry Cavill as the brawniest looking Superman yet, with Russell Crowe as Kal-El’s Kryptonian pappy, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as the Kents and Amy Adams as Lois Lane, all reimagined, of course. General Zod rears his arrogant head as well. Along with lots of action, the story addresses the impact of mankind learning we are not alone in the universe. Wonder if they’ll look at the impact of a guy whose powers violate the laws of physics? I mean, the man flies without propulsion, just by wanting to! Wouldn’t that be an even bigger story than the alien thing? Box Office Release Date (June 14) World War Z Finally, Brad Pitt’s mega-expensive zombie pic arrives! I’ve heard some genre fans complain that the trailers showcasing hordes of the undead are underwhelming, but I’m excited. The creatures are of the 28 Days Later variety, fast and furious, and apparently possessed of some ant-like let’s-all-pitch-infor-the-good-of-the-group herd mentality. They have a tendency to swarm, getting over barriers or into high places by piling on top of each other. Directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) and based on Max Brooks’ 2006 novel. Box Office Release Date (June 21) White House Down The White House is under attack and wannabe Secret Service agent Channing Tatum finds himself protecting President Jamie Foxx. Wait a minute … didn’t we just see the White House assaulted in the Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman action flick Olympus Has Fallen? The White-House-under-siege movie sounded like one too many until I saw the photo of Mr. Tatum crouching in the rubble wearing a sleeveless t-shirt and sporting sexy smudges over his buff frame. Independence Day and 2012 director Roland Emmerich is in charge, so you know the movie will be subtle and logical. Golly, I hope sarcasm translates into print. A & E CALENDAR The Heat The latest from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is a mismatched cop buddy comedy. Sure, mismatched cop buddy comedies have been done to death, but it’s a sturdy genre and who cares, anyway, it stars Sandra Bullock (America’s sweetheart, wronged by that rat bastard Jesse James) and Melissa McCarthy, the breakout star of Bridesmaids. Those two could make a comedy about menopausal nuns into a hit. Hey, that’s not a bad premise –– and you wouldn’t have to change the title! Box Office Release Date (June 28) Planet Indy: Trashed This documentary illustrates the effects of global warming and the problems with the way we handle our waste. Tobias Theatre at the IMA, 4000 Michigan Road., June 13, 7 p.m., $5 to $9

JULY The Lone Ranger This is not the baby boomers’ Lone Ranger. Well, the Lone Ranger may be similar, but get a load of Tonto! That’s Johnny Depp under the tribal face paint, scarf and bird hat. The story is told from Tonto’s point of view, because he was always more interesting than his masked partner, played by Armie Hammer. The epic Western adventure comes from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and serves as this year’s mega-uber Forth of July blockbuster, even if Disney did force the filmmakers to cut their budget from a reported $250 million to a paltry $215. Box Office Release Date (July 3) Pacific Rim Giant human-piloted robots battle giant monsters called kaiju (Japanese for “giant monsters”), but if you’re thinking this sounds like Transformers vs. Godzilla you’re wrong, because this production has no legal connection to those productions and besides, we don’t think these giant robots transform into anything. The director is Guillermo del Toro ( Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), so expect the movie to be smart and quirky as well as GIGANTIC and EARTH-SHATTERING. Hey, and the epic stars Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy, Idris Elba from The Wire and Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia . Can’t get much more eclectic than that! Box Office Release Date (July 12) Indiana Black Expo Film Festival Audiences attending this year’s IBE will have a chance to view renowned independent films about African American culture. Full schedule and selections to be announced. Tobias Theatre at the IMA, 4000 Michigan Rd., (July 13 –14), noon, prices vary

Planet Indy: Trashed Indy Film Fest Since 2004 this festival has grown into one of the most valued cultural events in the city every year, showing the best in independent films from all over the world. Multiple locations, July 18 – 28 R.I.P.D. Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, MaryLouise Parker and Kevin Bacon star in this supernatural cop story based on a graphic novel. Bridges plays an 1880s marshall who is part of the Rest in Peace Department, a law enforcement agency of dead police officers and sheriffs protecting the people of Earth from creepy otherworldly things. Reynolds plays a recently-deceased cop working with Bridges. Oh, and when the living look at Bridges, they see a beautiful woman instead of long-haired, bearded Bridges. Why? I guess because the premise wasn’t freaky enough. Box Office Release Date (July 19) Girl Most Likely Kristen Wiig stars as failed NYC playwright, who stages a fake suicide for sympathy after getting dumped by her upscale boyfriend. Bad idea, as she ends up in the custody of her estranged mother, Annette Bening, a gambling addict who lives on the Jersey Shore. Oh, and Wiig’s childhood room has been rented out to Darren Criss from [ Glee ]. Sure, the premise sounds more depressing than funny, but it’s listed as a comedy and Wiig has a good track record in that department. Box Office Release Date (July 19)

This new and darker edition is based, probably loosely, on the well-regarded Chris Claremont/Frank Miller Marvel miniseries from the ‘80s that focuses on the mutant with the adamantium-fused skeleton, bad attitude and badder hairstyle as he travels through Japan fighting ninjas and finding love and stuff. Hugh Jackman returns to the role and if you think being 44 years-old means he’s any less buff, just wait until you see this dude with his shirt off. Woah! Box Office Release Date (July 26)

AUGUST 300: Rise of an Empire 300 was a big badass battle –– filled epic with thunderous speeches, homoeroticism and abs-a-poppin.’ Since most of the cast died –– magnificently! –– the sequel focuses on navel battles between the Persians and the Athenians. And no, when I say naval battles I’m not referring to the indentations surrounded by hyperdefined six packs. Rodrigo Santoro and Lena Heady return as royalty, but Eva Green takes the spotlight as Artemisia, warrior commander of Xerxes’ naval fleet. The screenplay, co-written by 300 director Zack Snyder, is based on Frank

We’re The Millers You’re going to love the premise for this one. See the wholesome family road-tripping their way across the country? Nice, eh? Alas, nothing is as it seems. Jason Sudeikis plays a dope dealer desperate to transport 1,500 kilos of weed across the Mexican border. To make things look good, he’s hired a family, including his stripper neighbor, Jennifer Aniston as his wife, a latchkey kid, Will Poulter, as his son and a homeless young woman Emma Roberts, as his teenage daughter. You know they’ll end up bonding –– let’s hope the filmmakers remember to make us laugh along the way. Box Office Release Date (August 9) Kick-Ass 2 Remember 2010’s Kick-Ass, the misfit superhero flick most notable for Nic Cage instructing a young girl in the art of killing while she cussed like crazy? Mr. Cage is absent for the sequel, but Jim Carrey has joined the cast as Colonel Stars and Stripes. Jim Carrey in a potentially hammy role? Oh my achin’ head. Chloe Grace Moretz is back, a little older, but likely just as foulmouthed and lethal as Hit Girl. And let’s not forget Kick-Ass Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the cat that started the movie’s whole cutrate superhero craze. This is going to be soooo offensive. Hope it’s also good. Box Office Release Date (August 16) Rushmore at the IMA This quirky, intelligent coming-of-age tale has become a cult classic, starring Jason Schwartzman and written by Wes Anderson. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Cassandra Clare’s first book in her series of best-selling young adult fantasies comes to the big screen. I wonder why it’s coming to the big screen in late August when most of its target audience has gone back to school? It’s probably part of some brilliant marketing plan too sophisticated for my little brain to understand. Anyhoo, Lily Collins plays a girl who discovers she’s part of a long line of demon-slayers. And you thought the SATs were hard. Box Office Release Date (August 23) Waiting for Guffman at IRT This story about an off-broadway director crafting a show about his quirky, small hometown is coming to the Indiana Repertory Theatre.
