about it now? There is a reason, and it has little to do with the Hozier concert. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released a report showing Indiana’s economic growth ranked shamefully in 44th place. We rank last in the Great Lakes Region, and behind Kentucky as well. This report should be alarming to Hoosiers. From the report, the growth in Indiana’s gross domestic product in 2014 was reported at $1.4 billion, or 0.4 percent. That growth in GDP is less than our state’s budget surplus. In fact, our annual growth has been less than our budget surplus three of the last four years. Now let’s think this through: If the budget surplus was refunded to Hoosiers, and completely spent on Hoosier products and services, we would more than double our economic growth for the year. That move alone would take us from our embarrassing ranking in the mid 40s to a merely disapIt has become the standard for state pointing ranking in the mid 30s. government to hold $2 billion of our Operating governmoney with no intention of using it, ment with budget surpluses is as wrong all in the name of fiscal prudence. as operating in a deficit. The Irish singer/ songwriter mentioned multiple times during his set what a great venue it is. And he’s right about that. When he sang “Sedated” about halfway through the set, he was really talking about the hypnotic effect of young love, not Indiana’s $2 billion budget surplus. After all, Hozier is from Ireland, and rocking out a song about Indiana finance would just be weird. But state government’s hypnotic attachment to our aging and stagnant surplus is even creepier to me. Thinking about The Lawn, the investment the state made into the state park, and when it was made, got me thinking a little about how times have changed. It has become the

corrected. Deficits are errors and occur during surprisingly bad revenue periods, again, never purposely. These errors are corrected in a more panic-stricken way via spending cuts almost exclusively these days. But they are corrected nonetheless, and far more quickly. The surplus we have now is not as a result of an error. It exists solely for political value, and as a taxpayer, I find that valueless. It is often referred to as a “rainy day fund.” That was once a believable descriptive, but no longer is. Mainly because of all of the “rain” that has fallen since the surplus first existed – three or four budget cycles ago. Think about that for a moment. What could we have done, and didn’t, because we didn’t have the money, in the last six or eight years in Indiana? The list is suffocating. If we don’t plan to use it, we should give it back. The fiscal goal should be to hit the revenue/spending mark at zero, not to aim $2 billion above our need and erroneously declare that the target. The truly conservative approach to our current situation would be to either refund the surplus, or whittle away at it through a small tax reduction until it is gone. The liberal approach would be to find the best governmental uses for it, and spend it until it is gone. Protecting the overcollection or under-spending of tax rev-
enues as if it is some purposeful safety net doesn’t have a platform to call home. Hanging on to it for the sole purpose of a fictitious measure of success is more like malfeasance than prudence. In response to the BEA’s report this week, a spokesperson for Gov. Mike Pence responded by touting Indiana’s national attractiveness as a place to do business. But the reasons the publications that list Indiana as a top 20 “state to do business in” do not list the surplus as a reason. And our ranking on these lists put us in the teens (no. 15 in Forbes) more often than a “top” state as many in the Statehouse brag. I wonder how those businesses would feel if state government gave their customers $2 billion more to spend at their business by making a relatively simple policy decision? Conservatives and liberals alike should learn to agree on the uselessness of the budget surplus. If they can’t, taxpayers and voters need to force them to quit celebrating it. The surplus has simply become a drug on which the Indiana political world has grown dependent. It has been portrayed to voters and taxpayers as evidence of good stewardship, and the public has bought it enough times now to make it appear that they are also comfortably addicted. It seems like we are “sedated.” Which leads me back to Hozier. He was right about The Lawn. It is a great venue and a great addition to that state park. I’m glad Indiana built it. But now that we have this great surplus stashed away in our savings account, we seem to be more comfortable hiding behind it than doing great things with it. Ironically, The Lawn would never be built in the boom times of today. The end of the song’s melody says, “We are deaf, we are numb, free and young and we can feel none of it.” On this one, that sounds just about right. n

Mike Pence could have peered into the future to see the RFRA fallout coming at him with a gay pride flag in one hand and a giant doob in the other, common sense MAY have had a fighting chance. Would this imaginary hesitancy have been enough to allow intelligence and compassion to fully erode the religious and political fiends sniggering in his ear, pushing him toward choices born of small minds and cold hearts? NEWS Poll shows Pence vulnerable in re-election bid Indiana voters favor ousting Gov. Mike Pence from office in the 2016 election, primarily over his handling of education and gay rights issues. A majority of voters also say they want to add sexual orientation to the state’s civil rights law, creating new protections for gay Hoosiers. The survey by Republican pollster Christine Matthews found that support for Pence is waning nearly two months after an uproar over the Religious Freedom Restoration Act he signed into law. Critics argued the law would authorize discrimination against people who are gay, bisexual or transgender. The poll surveyed 800 registered voters from May 29-June 3 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. The poll found that 46 percent of registered voters agree with a statement that the governor’s handling of the religious freedom issue was embarrassing and he doesn’t deserve a second term. Another 41 percent of voters agreed that Pence may not have handled the issue as well as he could have but that he has done a good job overall and deserves to be re-elected. The final 13 percent of voters said they didn’t know. Republican Bill Oesterle, a businessman who opposed RFRA and supports adding sexual orientation to the state civil rights law, paid for the poll.

Pence ready for re-election fight Gov. Pence said in a speech to launch his re-election bid that Hoosiers won’t “tolerate discrimination against anyone.” But Pence said the state’s gay rights debate couldn’t be about “winners and losers.” (Pence was clearly addressing the controversy over the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, even though he never mentioned it by name.) Pence signed the legislation into law last spring, saying it protected Hoosiers’ rights to practice their religious beliefs. But critics claimed that would lead to discrimination against people who are gay, bisexual and transgender. The state is still dealing with the backlash — and Pence acknowledged, “as governor, I bear some responsibility for that.” But he has resisted calls to back legislation to add sexual orientation to the state’s civil rights law, which bans discrimination based on gender, race, religion and disability. Speaking to more than 800 Republicans gathered for a party dinner, Pence said, “in the changing tides of popular culture, there must be room for faith.” The governor’s re-election announcement comes against a backdrop of poor approval numbers that show Hoosiers are frustrated about his handling of gay rights and education. — THE STATEHOUSE FILE 6 NEWS // 06.24.15 - 07.01.15 // 100% RECYCLED PAPER // NUVO

FAITH AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Will the words of Pope Francis make a difference?
P
B Y A M BER S TEA RN S AS T E A R N S @ N U V O . N E T
ope Francis has certainly made some comments during his papal reign that have raised an eyebrow or two. Those comments have ranged from telling good Catholics not having to behave like rabbits when it comes to reproduction to meeting atheists in heaven to mankind living in a culture of waste. Pope Francis is not one to mince words. Last week he put words to paper, this time addressing the issue of the world’s environmental issues and climate change. But Pope Francis’ encyclical is not the first time anyone in the faith community has spoke strongly about the environmental issues facing the world. The pope acknowledges the words and efforts of the three popes before him. And it’s not just a message for good Catholics either. Pope Francis addresses his letter to everyone: he’s talking to you, your neighbors, friends, the person next to you in line at the store and everyone else living on earth.
“Now, faced as we are with global environmental deterioration, I wish to address every person living on this planet. … In this Encyclical, I would like to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home.”
The question is: Will everyone listen? National organizations like Interfaith Power and Light and GreenFaith are just a few of the groups hoping to bring anyone and everyone of faith into the conversation about the environment. Mike Oles, faith community organizer for Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light, says that is because the earth is something that every faith has in common regardless of teachings and disciplines. “If you read the Hebrew Bible [Torah], if you read the New Testament, if you read the Qur’an, if you read Buddhist text, if you read Hindu text — it’s all very clear that there’s a common thread that brings the world’s religions together,” says Oles. “And that has to do with caring for the earth, caring for what has been created, caring for the beauty of the world that we live on and caring for its well being.” That makes sense. (Insert your personal deity or scientific theory here) created the earth for life (humans and animals) to reside, develop and survive. According to Pope Francis (and scientific minds around the globe), mankind is destroying the earth. And that’s probably not God, Allah, or the Hindu deities wanted to happen and not what Jesus, Mohammed or Buddha taught us to do. Pope Francis really doesn’t care to whom your prayers are directed. As the leader of the largest Christian tradition in the world, he says the environment is everybody’s problem, and therefore everyone needs to pay attention. “The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole
human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development…” Pope Francis gets very specific in his encyclical. He calls out the issue of climate change, the lack of clean fresh water for consumption as well as irrigation, the growing need for biodiversity by letting go of fossil fuels and embracing renewable energies and how all of those issues affect the most vulnerable in our society in the poor, the young and the elderly. He talks about how development and in some cases overdevelopment is taking away the greatest creations (besides humankind) God created. It’s like he is talking directly to folks in Indiana. Oh. Yeah. He. Is. Let’s just hope someone is listening. Oles believes that people will be drawn to contemplate the pope’s words because hey, he’s the pope. “When you start talking about environments and start talking about ways that we can better care for earth, you can’t ask for a better voice than Pope Francis out there saying ‘Let’s do something,’ and hopefully the church doors will open and conversations will really go places here in Indiana and around the world,” says Oles. “Here in Indiana we’re ranked 47th in the country for environmental quality and there’s a very large Catholic population [in our state]. Hopefully … Pope Francis and his words will allow Catholic voices to really get involved with creation care and help clean up Indiana’s environment.” Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light has a network of several churches around the state that work within their congregations to address positive ways they can help impact the conversation of environmental justice. For some it’s as simple as organizing recycling programs or sponsoring plant exchanges and gardening workshops. For others it’s an active involvement in public awareness campaigns like the Beyond Coal campaign or speaking before a statehouse committee on energy efficiency legislation. Every effort, big or small, is about making the earth a better place to live and getting it back to the way it was created. It seems like it should be simple. How-

@Pontifex I invite all to pause to think about the challenges we face regarding care for our common home. #LaudatoSi We need a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. #LaudatoSi There is an intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet. #LaudatoSi The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all. The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. One particularly serious problem is the quality of water available to the poor. We need an integrated approach to combating poverty and protecting nature. Reducing greenhouse gases requires honesty, courage and responsibility. #LaudatoSi There is a need to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress. #LaudatoSi The throwaway culture of today calls for a new lifestyle. #LaudatoSi “To commit a crime against the natural world is a sin against ourselves and a sin against God.” (Patriarch Bartholomew)
Judaism (Old Testament) “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.” — GENESIS 1:11-12 “Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am Jehovah. If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; then I will give your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.” — LEVITICUS 26: 2-4 “The earth is the LORD’S, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?

— FROM LOTUS SUTRA, “DHARMA RAIN”
Hinduism The Hindu way of living is known as Sanatana Dharma—Universal Humanity based living. The environment has been there from the beginning of the creation and has been recognized as a basic continuity and unity between human environment and non-human environment. This unity is expressed in the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam concept of Hindu Culture endowed with Yoga based lifestyle. This sentiment is powerfully presented in an ancient Vedic Prayer for peace and harmony in the cosmos: Unto the Heaven be Peace, Unto the Sky and the Earth be Peace, Peace be unto the Water, Unto the Herbs and Trees be Peace, Unto all the Gods be Peace, Unto Brahma and unto All be Peace.
Leaving an inhabitable planet to future generations is, first and foremost, up to us. Many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change.
I rain down the Dharma rain, filling the whole world, and this single-flavored Dharma is practiced by each according to the individual’s power. It is like those thickets and groves, medicinal herbs and trees which, according to whether they are large or small, bit by bit grow lush and beautiful.
And may We realize that Peace.
Christianity (New Testament) “And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. And the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?” — MATTHEW 8:26-27 “Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are? And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields; they never have to work or spin;” — MATTHEW 6:26,28
Buddhism Even as a mother protects with her life Her child, her only child, So with a boundless heart Should one cherish all living beings, Radiating kindness over the entire world, Spreading upward to the skies, And downward to the depths, Outward and unbounded. — FROM METTA SUTTA, “LOVING-KINDNESS” The equality of the Buddha’s preaching is like a rain of a single flavor, but depending upon the nature of the living being, the way in which it is received is not uniform, just as the various plants and trees each receive the moisture in a different manner.

ndy PopCon is back for year two, and we’re excited — this particular convention includes comic book artists (including an all-female discussion panel called “Men in Comics” — a direct response to Denver Comic Con’s all-male “Women in Comics” panel held this past spring). We here at NUVO thought we’d pay homage to our LOCAL comic artists — and just like any good superhero, they’ve got origin stories! Four Indiana-based comic artists tell us how they started drawing — in the way only they can tell the story. The next few pages feature their tales of creativity. If you’re going to PopCon, we’ve got some picks for you — folks to meet and things to see — courtesy of our cover woman, Bridget the NUVO Comics Vlogger. Created by a gang of nerds from Indianapolis, PopCon celebrates its second year. It’s more than comic books; it’s all manner of geekdom celebrated at this event. TV, movies, comics, Youtube stars and much more. Here’s my two cents on what to check out at PopCon this year.
EDWARD JAMES OLMOS Edward James Olmos will be gracing Indianapolis with his presence at other PopCon. A well known and respected actor, younotables might recognize him as Admiral William Adama from Battlestar Galactica, Robert Gonzalez from the recent season of Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., or (if you lived in a closet where you could only watch animated films) Chief Tannabok from The Road to El Dorado. SAM JONES If that’s not enough, the savior of the whole stinking uni-

ZACH GALLIGAN Remember the chilling tale of a boy and his demonic pet? A pet that wasn’t allowed food after midnight and could never get wet? If you said anything other than Gremlins, please visit a video store immediately and educate yourself. Zach Galligan, aka Billy Peltzer the hero of the story, will be attending this year.

REVIEW Material World e Through Aug. 2. Has the internet revolution snuffed out our attention spans when it comes to appreciating art? That’s the question I had in mind while viewing the work of Aaron Nemec, based in West Lafayette, whose work showcased YouTube videos on monitors. Nemec like the other artists showing work in Material World was allegedly pushing the boundaries when it came to the materials he was using in his work. The point was for the artists to showcase work using out-of-the-box materials, per the statement by the show’s curator, Kyle Herrington. The most creative use of materials in this exhibition, in my book, would be the wall-hanging portraits of human subjects using used denim as a medium by Jim Arendt, who creates reasonable representations of the human form by layering one layer of denim on top of another — using denim of different color gradations — is a testament to his skill. Concurrently with Material World, in a separate gallery space, you can also see the work of Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades. The focus is on using found and salvaged objects. One of Simpson’s works, “Better than it Really Was, 1” consists of plastic lawn ornaments. You see the Virgin Mary, a Santa Claus, a teddy bear all fused together. It’s this kind of art is ready-made for the Internet Age. It’s easy to get the joke. You see the image onscreen, laugh a little, and move on. The work of Aristotle Georgiades, though, is not as easily reduced. For example the sculpture “Descending a Staircase,” composed of salvaged architectural wood trim. In fact, there’s no stairs in this piece at all. Georgiades’s work is a free-standing sculpture constructed to resemble a succession of stair bannisters winding tightly upwards around a space not even wide enough to fit a basketball. The title references Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase,” a 1912 Modernist painting. It’s the kind of thought-provoking work that I like to see in a gallery space, work that is not easily reducible to the contemporary art version of a one-liner. — DAN GROSSMAN Indianapolis Art Center, 820 E. 67th St., FREE, indplsart center.org

NUVO: What are you currently working on?
STEVEN RAY BRO
NUVO: What has your experience been with the art community in Indy?
STEELE: I am a little bit different than most artists when creating a character. If I am doing my own personal work I tend to fill out what I call a character profile sheet… I see a lot of people who look at people’s characters and say ‘well why did you do that’ and the artist really has no explanation of why besides ‘well, I thought it looked cool.’ I don’t accept that answer. If you are going to be a character designer you need to be able to explain every single inch of that character. *When she draws she often puts on something for background noise. STEELE: When I was actually looking to go back to school I was going to go to Herron for my MFA. An MFA is a terminal degree; it’s like having a Ph.D. They literally looked at my portfolio and said ‘you are really accomplished, but we don’t teach digital here and even if you had your own equipment we wouldn’t have the staff to support it.’ … I was really upset about that. In my experience the digital community in Indianapolis as gotten humongous in the past years and I was flabbergasted that Herron, an art school, didn’t teach digital. … They were stuck in the traditional oil and acrylic painting, and they had a graphic design department that had digital tablets but they didn’t teach digital painting. Now, because of losing students over the course of the years they started teaching digital painting. … I think our
BRO: Right now I am branding myself — which sounds really egotistical — but YouTube has the ‘You’ in the tittle. Most cartoon animators have a character that is themselves. community is really starting to see that and be more respective and receptive of the art form. NUVO: People often say that gaming and comics are male dominated. Is that true behind the scenes? STEELE: I do not think that’s true at all. I think that people automatically assume that any field is dominated by men… But I have literally never had any kind of issue or anyone saying ‘do you feel like you are being overrun by men?’ Do I have a lot of male artist friends? Yeah. But I have just as many female artist friends. Most of my friends who are digital artists, or just artists in general are female. As far as Indianapolis goes I think it is equally populated.

ALLEN: I am in the same boat as anyone who likes the comic. I am excited to see what they do. … We as a team are going to be talking to all of the movie guys to figure out what kind of input we have. I don’t know one way or another right now. I am just excited to see what that would even look like — a Lumberjanes movie, a live action Lumberjanes movie! I have the obvious concern that, well, it’s a little scary someone is adapting it. You see Hollywood adaptations all the time that miss the mark. That is always a fear but I am more excited than scared at this point. NUVO: What would you do to make the comic industry better? Let’s pick two things. ALLEN: If I could snap fingers it would be fair pay rates and more diversity for sure, not just a bunch of white dudes both making comics and in comics. The comics community in general is becoming a more welcoming place, just within the last couple of years. So that’s promising. There’s a lot of work to do, for sure.
comic characters that my friends could relate to. So while I was working at Marvel I worked on a number of their Black characters… Black Lightning was the process I was working toward. He was created because I wanted a very positive character, someone the younger readers could get into. … In Black Lightning I was able to address some of my own political and social issues involving inner city communities and racism and things like that. We are living a very diverse age. Comic book characters don’t have to be all white. More and more we are getting a whole range of comic book characters who are all nationalities, all sexual persuasions. The comic books in America are beginning to reflect the diversity of our country. I am proud to be somebody who was involved in that very early on. I am very happy to be continuing that kind of work. Originally when I was first asked to come to this convention I turned them down because of your asshole governor and representatives. ANNUAL GRAFFITI EXPO MOVES TO JUNE C
BY M I K E A L L EE E D I T O R S @ N U V O . NET
all 2015 a transition year for SubSurface. The annual Labor Day weekend gathering of graffiti writers, now in its 13th year, is moving the paint schedule up, scaling back and sharpening its focus. The event will now take place on June 27-28, once again concentrating work in Fountain Square. Quality over quantity will be the target this time around. Adding new real estate is not the group’s major priority. “Scheduling paint over Labor Day weekend is something that plagued us every year” said Dan Thompson of Fab Crew, a SubSurface spokesman. “Guys that we’d call up would already be committed elsewhere months in advance.” Scaling back its size became another step the group felt necessary if it were to continue delivering strong work. As the number of painting spots grew each year, so did a need to police them. In 2014, admittedly a potential “free-forall,” not all of the art produced lived up to the group’s standards. “It can take years to secure the properties and make the owners comfortable with what we’re proposing,” said Dan. “Last year we had a few instances where some friend of a friend of a friend would show up, come across a blank wall and just start spray painting. Artists that hadn’t been invited were painting walls that hadn’t been secured. There’s a lot of eyes on us. Everyone is watching. If a guy runs over a paint can somebody left in Dan Thompson of Fab Crew mixes paint to be used as the background base for one of this weekend’s walls. PHOTO BY MIKE ALLEE

a parking lot, that’s our fucking problem. In the eyes of many in the city, graffiti is reckless and has no artistic value. The goal of Subsurface is to present something more.” Another growing pain arose that the group hadn’t anticipated. Securing additional wall space had become an ongoing quest as each year new “headline” artists were added to the growing list of veterans. It wasn’t so much a problem of finding building owners that liked their idea — some ended up liking it too much. In sitting down with Fountain Square property owners, SubSurface proposed that graphics would be painted over and changed each year during their annual gathering. This gave businesses a new look and locked in another space where artists could paint. Come paint season, more than a few of the owners didn’t want to let go of the previous year’s artwork. They wanted it to remain permanent. Some pieces, like the stylized robot behind New Day Meadery, have even been referred to as landmarks. SubSurface doesn’t look for this year’s streamlined roster to be any less impressive. Amuse 126 will be the featured artist for 2015 painting the large wall behind White Rabbit where last year’s Doctor Doom is currently portrayed. Accomplished street artist Reuben Aquirre from Chicago is coming. Metalfingers crew out of Cincinnati will be painting and Indianapolis-based Fab Crew/IWS will create two pieces, one in Fountain Square and one near the event’s location of previous years on South Palmer Street. Additional talent are on call and a final lineup may not be known until days before the show. Plans for 2016 are already under way and those plans will involve SubSurface moving into new territory. “For a change, businesses have been approaching us,” said Fab Crew’s Thompson. The old south side and Broad Ripple are both under consideration. Broad Ripple has a special appeal to the group because it was where Subsurface began 13 years ago. n

She also connects traditional craft to modern tools. Her techniques are similar to the original paper cutters of South America, but unlike the original Papel Picado crafters she uses a razor-sharp craft knife for her designs. TOTS: The Perfect “10” e Through July 4. Known locally as “the music maker,” pianist and vocalist and now writer, Sean Baker recently premiered his semi-autobiographical piece, titled The Perfect “10” at Theatre On The Square. Loosely based on the 1979 Blake Edwards classic hit 10, Baker finds a way to bring the recognizable storyline, a man who is not ready to grow up, to modern times. Relationship dynamics and mid-life crises are both big conversation starters and always have been. The inspiration story of 10 told how a midlife crisis unfolded in the 1980s, while Baker’s The Perfect “10” brought the concept to millennial relationships and how to deal with internal conflict. “I believe this story about relationships and middle-age chasing fantasy is poignant and needs to be told again after 36 years since the original film,” said Baker. The Perfect “10” is a great combination of humor and reality checks. With strong stage presence, the actors truly brought the story to life. Considering the story is semi-autobiographical, I feel as though Baker would be proud of this performance and how it shed light on all of the (harsh) realities that are expressed throughout the story line. — MEGAN SNIDER Theatre On the Square, 627 Massachusetts Ave., price varies, 685-8687, tots.org

liked Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Of course, people that write about movies are supposed to like it. The quirky tearjerker is stuffed with references to other movies; two of the characters make funny little home movie versions of famous films; the movie has chapter headings reminding us we’re watching a movie; and the climax of the story involves a movie made by one of the characters about another of the characters. Director Alfonso GomezRejon, working from Jesse Andrews’ adaptation of his own novel, offers a funny, detached lead character, a teenager who deals with life’s traumas by behaving like a tourist. The audience at the Sundance Film Festival ate it up. The majority of film reviewers ate it up. I wonder, though, if the general audience will find it as tasty as the movie buffs do? I’ll get back to that in a minute – first let’s look at the setup. Greg (Thomas Mann) is the star of the show. He makes his wise-ass movie knockoffs with Earl (RJ Cyler). The two have been pals since they were little, but Greg insists on

referring to Earl as his “coworker.” Greg parents (Connie Britton and Nick Offerman) worry about their son’s avoidance of involvement. Mom steers him toward Rachel (Olivia Cooke), a lovely young girl with leukemia. They meet, they banter; our premise is set. Now let’s take another look at the film’s title: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The story is presented solely from Greg’s point of view. Greg, who deals with the cliques at his high school by playing Switzerland to them all. Greg, who refers to his relationship with Rachel as “the Doomed Friendship.” Through Greg’s eyes, Earl is a supporting player who doesn’t get to say much. When he’s not fretting about Greg, he’s fixating on “titties.” Through Greg’s eyes, Rachel eventually achieves costar status, but predominately as a figure that allows him to grow as an individual ... while remaining glib, of course. There is nothing wrong with presenting a story through one person’s eyes, but I wondered about the other characters. Rachel talks about how terrible she looks, especially when she loses her hair, but she appears gorgeous onscreen. Are we seeing her as idealized by the filmmakers, or as idealized by Greg? SUBMITTED PHOTO
Eyes are up here, Greg. Eyes are up here.
Earl talks like a simple horny teen, but RJ Cyler’s portrayal of him suggests that he is more mature than his friend. How much of what we see is Greg’s vision of a supportive friend willing to be dismissed on a dime? I’m not complaining about any of this, mind you, I’m just wondering how much Gomez-Rejon and Andrews were in on their own jokes. Are the mannered performances of Nick Offerman as Greg’s dad and Molly Shannon as Rachel’s mom reflections of Greg’s worldview or just the filmmakers letting the actors work their schtick? Is Gomez-Rejon’s use of the fisheye lens his way of indicating Greg’s point of view, or is the director winking at the audience to build a hipper-than-thou feel with us? It’s perfectly valid to present life and death matters through a self-absorbed character; given the heavy-duty subject matter, it may even be more honest. Most movies use their camera like the eye of God, going wherever needed to tell their tale. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl presents the universe solely as it’s relevant to one estranged kid. Will the young audience that embraced The Fault in Our Stars accept this movie as well? Will they feel cheated? I think it’s easy to relate to Greg’s distinct experiences. The poor guy is far more typical – and relateable – than he thinks he is. Still, I wonder how general audiences will react to a film titled Me and Earl and the Dying Girl that turns out to only be about “Me?” n

he Days of the Dead convention is essentially horror nerd heaven. Among other treats, it offers fans a chance to mingle with the monsters that haunted their youth. I’ll never forget talking to actress Heather Langenkamp at the event few years back about her battles with iconic bogeyman Freddy Krueger. She told me about a disabled woman who approached her at another convention and confessed to watching A Nightmare on Elm Street every day while she was recovering from the car accident that paralyzed her. Watching Langenkamp’s character triumph through a nightmarish situation helped the fan overcome her own. That Days of the Dead in 2011 opened my eyes to the therapeutic power of the horror genre. I’ve been hooked on it ever since. Lucky for me, the horror convention circuit became my beat. Guests this year include Kane Hodder,

RECIPE
BLACK RASPBERRY CHEESECAKES WITH COCONUT COOKIE CRUST
YOU’LL NEED: 1 1/2 cups coconut cookie crumbs 0-3 tablespoons sugar (depending on sweetness of cookie) 1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted 4 (8 ounce) packages of cream cheese 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 eggs 3/4 cup black raspberry syrup, 2 tablespoons reserved
MAKE IT: First things first: taste the cookies you plan to crush for the base. If they’re “dessert sweet,” as mine were, you might be able to skip the sugar. If they’re less sweet and more like an actual graham cracker, you can add up to 3 tablespoons of sugar to your crust mixture. Keep in mind that the cheesecake will be sweet from the fruit, so we reduced the amount of sugar in the original recipe to make up for the sweetness of the raspberry syrup, which I prefer to make at a 2-to-1 fruit-to-sugar ratio when baking. Mix your crumbs, butter and optional sugar together and press into a pan. I made mini cheesecakes by pressing my crust into a muffin tin with an espresso press. Whip your room-temp cream cheese until it’s fluffy, then add your eggs, vanilla, and syrup and whip together. Pour or spoon into muffin tins or springform pan, and top each with a few drops of reserved syrup and swirl with a wooden skewer. Bake at 325 for 40 to 55 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve with fresh berries and fresh whipped cream.

hile out on a walk with my dog a few weeks ago, I noticed the telltale pale white clusters of berries that would soon turn into raspberries. Now, as someone with a handful of my own raspberry canes at home, I knew that I’d have to wait to see if the raspberries were red or black. Black raspberries turn blood red before turning their ripened black, so I revisited the spot a few more times until the white fruit turned red and then — aha! — black after all. Ordinarily, experienced foragers would tell you not to go out and grab fruit off of any tree and shove it in your mouth but, per foraging expert Matt Shull’s instructions, I’d lived with a raspberry plant for over a year and knew, beyond a doubt, that that’s what I was dealing with. The tricky part about harvesting ripe raspberries is caused by the fruit’s structure. Blackberries and mulberries come off with their core still attached, making them a lot more durable and less likely to squish in your collecting container. Raspberries, on the other hand, leave their cores on the bush and the picked fruit is both soft and hollow, so rough handling makes the fruit collapse on itself and turn into a mushy mess. So when you’re picking your ripe berries, aim for a very light touch — it should feel more like you’re tickling the berries off of the tree than applying much pressure with your fingertips. Second, the fruit holds onto one seed for every juicy globule that makes up the cup-shaped fruit. So when you’re using your raspberries, it’s usually a good idea to keep a fine strainer around. For both of these recipes, I cooked my black raspberries in a saucepan with some sugar to make a syrup first and then passed that through a strainer before adding it to my other ingredients. “What if I don’t want to?” you ask? Well, you don’t have to, but just know that raspberry seeds are like little wooden rocks that get stuck in every crevice of your back teeth and will leave your guests wanting to find somewhere to spit. Not the best >>>
THIS WEEK
<<< ending to a cookout if you ask me, but to each his own. Since we cooked these fruits down into a syrup, you could substitute in mulberries or blackberries depending on what’s available. It took me about an hour to gather about 2-3 pints of berries, and I’d recommend being smarter than I was and wearing long sleeves. Were it not for the abrasions, I may have stuck it out for another hour. If you’re impatient or you have kiddos, go with the mulberry option as harvesting is the fastest: Lay a sheet on the ground and shake the bejesus out of the limbs until you’ve got enough berries to make a meal. I like making barbecue sauce out of my berries because it just means I get to enjoy that summer flavor in my savory food as well as my desserts, and it makes a nice gift around the holidays when people are really starting to miss the summer sun. You may also recognize the cheesecake recipe as the original Philadelphia recipe that’s printed on every box of cream cheese. Why did I use this instead of ripping off Giada or Ina? Because I don’t dick around with things that are triedand-true. And since the batter is almost all protein, fat and water, you can add extra liquid like the fruit syrup without having to adjust anything other than your cooking time, as it’s already pretty hard to dry out a cheesecake. My second tip here is to whip the cream cheese with your whisk attachment until it’s fluffed up, as the airy bite is a nice combo with the fruit and the dense, buttery cookie bottom. If you want to take this to the next level, serve it with some fresh-made whipped cream and extra fresh fruit on top. For the crust, I ended up using some coconut flavored cookies from Mexico because, well, I do my shopping at Saraga and it sounded way more delicious than the traditional graham cracker crust, and it absolutely was. All you need to know about altering your crust is you can blend pretty much any sweet, crunchy cookie into crumbs and stir it with butter to make whatever crumb crust you want. The crunchy cookie world is your crumb crust oyster. n

BLACK RASPBERRY TAMARIND BARBECUE
YOU’LL NEED: 2 cups fresh black raspberries 1/3 cup sugar 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons lemon zest 2 onions 1 tablespoon butter 1 Tablespoon oil 1 tamarind pod, found at Saraga 1 head garlic 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons blackstrap molasses Red pepper flakes or Sriracha to taste Salt and black pepper
MAKE IT:
MONDAYS
Wrap your garlic in some foil and roast it in the oven until soft. (If you’re lazy like me, you can roast about 10 heads at a time and keep the cloves in a jar in the fridge.) While it’s roasting, start caramelizing your onions in the butter/oil mixture and cook over medium/medium-low heat depending on your range until a beautiful, caramelized brown. Reminder: Onions don’t caramelize on high heat, they burn. Set aside.
Margarita Mondays
To prep your tamarind, remove the brittle shell from the outside and grab the sticky middle where the flesh of the tamarind lives. Make sure to remove the fibrous strings around the middle of the tamarind. These will not soften in water. Soak the soft middle of the tamarind pod in hot water for about 30 minutes, then pass it through the strainer to get all the tangy paste from the pod.

Cook raspberries, sugar, lemon juice and zest together over medium heat until the mixture starts to bubble. Make sure all the fruit has been macerated together with the sugar and juice and then pass it through a fine sieve to remove all the seeds. (Note: I used my auger-style juicer to do this because I’m lazy and damn, I’m never going back to using a strainer and a spoon).

Once your garlic has been roasted and softened in the oven (you can also do this on the grill with the foil wrapping), squeeze the whole thing from the bottom up to shoot the softened cloves into a blender. Add your caramelized onions and de-seeded raspberry syrup and the rest of ingredients except the salt, pepper and Sriracha. Blend until smooth and return to the onion pan. Cook the sauce down until it’s thick and bubbly over medium-low heat — not like bottled thick but heavy enough to stick to the chicken in a thin layer. Let it cook, then add your salt, pepper and Sriracha, as adding them when it’s too hot won’t give you an accurate idea of how it will turn out. You’ll be basting a few times, after all, so don’t make it too spicy or too thick. You want it to reduce but not cook the sugar that much more, or you’ll end up with a bitter, burned mess.

HOW TO BARBECUE CHICKEN ON THE GRILL
Get your grill super hot and place your meat skin-side down on the grill. Don’t fucking turn it for a few minutes. Don’t. If you turn it to soon, you’ll leave a significant portion of your meat on the grill. After about 5 minutes, rotate the meat 45 degrees to get that restaurant-style cross hatch grill mark. Flip it. Get those grill marks on the other side.
Now turn that heat down as low as it will go, or pile your smoldering coals into one corner of the grill. Now that you’ve seared your outside, put your meat up on the opposite side as your heat source, ideally on a top rack or elevated somewhat. Baste that shit. Baste it good. Sing to it. Tell it how tasty it’s going to be. Tell it
you love it. Close the lid, returning to baste again every 10 minutes or so until an instant-read thermometer comes out at the right temp, and remember that it’s way hotter in that grill with a closed lid than it seems when you’ve got it open. Low, indirect heat WILL cook your meat in time, and it’ll give your chicken that perfect, sticky glaze.

Dear Reader, As you’re reading this I am likely navigating new roads with two cats who have been cooped up in carriers for many hours in transit to our new home. You see, we’ve moved. Away from Indiana. But before you go assuming that I’ve left for greener pastures, please know that it has nothing to do with Indianapolis or Indiana being behind in sustainability. Sure, I’d love to live somewhere with an elaborate train/bus system, where composting is the norm and plastic bags are banned. But that’s not where we’re off to, nor why we’re gone. Nah. After a handful of years of “what ifs” and “do you think we coulds,” Chris and I decided to embark on an adventure. Today we land on the 82 square mile, population 50,000, island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands (and you think Indy is small!). Some folks ask why and our response is typically, “Why not?” We both love to be warm (hot, really) and we were ready for an adventure. Another reason for me: I need to just slow down. I was starting to feel the effects of stress and busy-ness more than I really cared to. I also want to experience a new type of nature. I love the ocean. I want to grow avocados and citrus. I want to drink coconut water from a coconut instead of a can. I want to see a sea turtle — and maybe even help save them some day. Something else you should know: I plan to continue writing Ask Renee. When Ed the Editor (anyone else see the irony in that?!) asked me to continue, I was touched. I’m not sure if he really thinks I’m the best gal for the job or if he just couldn’t find anyone else named Renee, but I’m happy for the opportunity to stay connected to my beloved home. (Ed the editor’s note: She’s the best gal for this job.) I promise to do my best to stay in the loop and offer the best advice I know. And I hope that if ever you feel that Ask Renee seems inauthentic, you’ll let me or someone at NUVO know (constructively, please). Please also share info with me that you think is pertinent to the green-minded masses and feel free to ask questions about our green living experience on an island.
I also feel very fortunate to remain part of the Hoosier Environmental Council team — I will continue working on the HEC Green Business Supporter (see hecweb.org) program from afar. Basically, I get to work with some of my favorite green businesses to support a nonprofit that is doing great things for the environment in Indiana. I’m a lucky girl. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way:
A clarification Whoa, readers! There seems to be some confusion over a recent “Ask Renee” (NUVO, June 17-24, 2015) that I’d like to clarify immediately. A reader named Ginger asked me if Ray’s and Republic are picking through the TRASH to pull out recyclables. My answer says that no, they are not picking through the TRASH to find recyclable items. They ARE sorting and recycling materials that are placed in your curbside recycling bin – and they’re doing a great job at it! Let me break it down for you. Both Ray’s and Republic offer two distinctly different residential services: trash pickup and curbside recycling. These services have two separate bins, are picked up by different trucks and are taken to different places. Upon pickup, they haul trash to either an incinera-

They take curbside recycling to a recycling facility where it is sorted, bundled and sent to a recycler. Do you understand the difference here? Please let me know if it needs further clarification, as I don’t want anyone for a second to question the integrity of these companies. And please, PLEASE continue recycling with one of these companies (or the provider in your area) with confidence. Your investment in clean curbside recycling keeps tons of valuable materials out of the incinerator or landfill, creates green jobs, reduces carbon emissions, provides recycled feedstock to manufacturers that would otherwise have to use virgin materials, and is the best option for the environment! Chatting with Craig B. Moore after his band’s Birdy’s success

hough it could have been easy to misread Craig B. Moore’s natural charismatic stage presence for overconfidence throughout the Birdy’s Battle Royale this spring, it would have been a mistake. The band, fresh off the February release of debut album Life Matters, had actually entered the competition on the lastminute suggestion of venue booker Henry French. “I was actually given Henry’s contact information a week before the competition started, and I called him just to try and get a show booked,” says Moore. “So he says 'why don't you come be a part of our Battle Royale?' So we did. I just wanted to make an impression on people and get our name out there, and suddenly we ended up advancing. So that was a good deal for us.” He’s being modest, of course. The band advanced on a tough night late in the competition, placing second to Stackhouse, a crowd favorite that showed all its cards early, keeping nothing in reserve. Moore’s Invaders, meanwhile, proved that building an audience requires finesse, a willing-
half of competitors during the battle's final round, they were certainly worthy of a “most improved” mention, particularly for how they took songs from early rounds and pushed to make them sound new. Top single contenders “Einstein” and “Your Dreams” benefited from the added self-scrutiny, helping propel this band beyond early, easy Pearl Jam comparisons. Moore’s Invaders prove that Moore, an educator who serves as the assistant prinbuilding an audience requires cipal at Doe Creek Middle School in New Palestine, has finesse, a willingness to challenge worked with guitarist Tom even the band’s expectations. It's ence and I think a lot of it is due to a challenge to go into each and every performance with the same mindset.” Though they didn’t place in the top S E E , M O O R E , O N P A GE 3 0 ness to challenge even the band’s expectations. When they returned in the late April semifinals against a brutal slate including Prowlers and The Prey’s Jeff Kelly and Westside rockers Speedbird, they upped the ante and advanced again, placing second to prog-rockers Dead Birds Adore Us.
It’s been more than six years since I’ve listened to a Dockers album all the way through. I can see why. Their music sounds the way robotripping feels, and I gave up drugs not long after my last interaction with the band. (Editor’s note: Read about that in the NUVO.net archives.) But the Dockers’ new album, Fury of the Mindless Ones, doesn’t disappoint, even if it gives you weird flashbacks. Actually, the band members, code named Aztec Kotex, Dr. Doomtone, and Creepy 13, probably prefer that their songs cause mild synesthesia and paranoia. Fury opens with a quote from Marvel Comics’ Strange Tales No.127, “And there they are, primitive, savage, totally devoid of love, or kindness, or any type of intelligence. They live only to fight and to destroy,” followed by fuzzy bass hits and even fuzzier power chords. That song, “Optimism Pessimism” is one hell of an opener, and eleven more tracks follow, each filled with black humor, comic book violence, and even a little bit of venereal disease. The Dockers have always resisted labels, refusing to stand behind anything except their self-titled brand “fezcore,” (named because the group plays live shows wearing bright red fezzes). But if we have to label them: some kind of combination of punk, doom metal, and nonsense, packed with distorted guitar, four-four drumbeats, slurry bass, and the unmistakable yelling of vocalist Aztec Kotex. A good sense of humor is required, especially for tracks like “Stab Stab Stabbity Stab,” a screamy minute-long vortex, and “Into the Fluid,” which sounds like someone slipped The Briefs a whole bunch of quaaludes. Even when the power chords blaze faster than I can track them, like in “Necro Meca Mansion,” the tracks on Fury of the Mindless Ones feel sludgy. In “Great Up to a Point,” that sludginess devolves into shrieking chaos. In “Talking Tina,” it gets stretched and slowed into a fiveminute nightmare, with little more than four chords repeated and interspersed with digitized blips, menacing vocals, and clips of the Creepiest Talking Doll in the World from The Twilight Zone. Other than that, the songs are short, with two-thirds of them clocking in at less than two minutes. Fury of the Mindless Ones is exactly what you’d expect from a group of comic book geeks who love horror films and heavy metal. The Dockers aren’t doing anything terribly different from their other albums here, but that’s not a criticism. These guys do their thing well — whatever that “thing” is. — EMMA FAESI HUDELSON

the fact that the Battle Royale really stretched us,” says Moore. “It challenged us to look at ourselves individually and as a band to bring out the best.” That’s a message he strives to impart on the students who pass through his office. “I just had a neat experience, as our high school jazz band covered our song “How To Fall,” and they invited me to perform it with them at their spring concert. It was a really neat experience. And then they interviewed me after the performance. And one of the questions was what advice I would give to a student who wanted to pursue a career in music. And my answer was easy: ‘Go for it!’ I think a lot of kids, especially these days, are so focused on doing one thing well, they don't feel like they can find enough time for music.” The album has resonated with his students. “They know I have an album on iTunes, and they think that's cool,” he says. “I think the whole message throughout the album, Life Matters, is that we're all experiencing emotions. We all experience these different relationships, going through ups and

downs, through deaths or loss of loved ones, the excitement of love, bitterness, anger. The album is about all of those things, and I hope through the lyrics that people hear a mix of all that.” There's no rest for the weary just because the album's out and the Birdy’s Battle is finished. The band has secured a performance spot at the Indiana State Fair on August 18, about which they'll know more as the summer progresses. They're also hard at work on a three-song EP which will see the band’s members writing more collaboratively this go-round. A new album in the spring is also within the realm of possibility. Most important for now, however, is that they continue to get out there and play. “There is nothing that compares to playing your music live and doing it well,” Moore says. “I think playing live shows in front of people, and playing something you've written and put together collaboratively with a bunch of guys, I don’t think there’s anything else like that. The studio, sometimes, can be very grueling, very tedious. But it is a fun process. Still, I really don’t think it compares to performing live in front of people.” n
“I think anyone who saw us in March and then saw us again in May would have seen a noticeable difference and I think a lot of it is due to the fact that the Battle Royale really stretched us.”

t's another balmy night in the Square, and the band manners, please. is setting up on Radio Radio's stage. They've come into their own in the past year as a local four-piece, and now find themselves opening up for a pair of seasoned Bloomington acts, The Vallures and Jenn Cristy. Katrina Bolyard, Jennasen Updike, Dave Hall and Sam Jackson jump right into a high-energy set of soul-pop tunes, receiving increasing levels of approval from the large crowd on hand, with listeners gradually inching closer and closer to the stage as each song unfolds. Considering this scene has recently become a regular one at manners, please. shows, however, fans might be surprised to learn of the band’s comical origins. “Jennasen and I just sort of started a joke band based on a misheard comment that her boyfriend made about my boobs. We both heard ‘Awesome boobs,’ and we were like, ‘That would be a hilarious band name,’” says singer/aux percussionist Bolyard, laughing. “We were hanging out anyway, and we just decided to give it a shot.” After this initial collaboration, Bolyard and Updike eventually decided to join forces on something that was a bit more serious, writing a brand new batch of songs as manners, please. for a basement show. In looking back on their debut performance, Bolyard reflects, “Our vision at that point was to sort of do a rock opera and have sets, costumes, intervals of background music and a script.” Although she had prior music experience performing with her high school show choir, Bolyard admits she had never been in a band before manners, please., citing her limited instrumental skills as the primary reason. For Updike though, it was a different story. “I come from a very musical family, so I’ve always played,” she says. “My brother Jascha was a local artist, and he passed away tragically in 2013. But, we lived together for all of college and played music together a lot. And then a couple of years ago, I joined The Dead Frets, which our current drummer Dave Hall was in as well.” The duo eventually made their way out of the underground, playing successful shows at places like the Melody Inn and the now-closed Vibes Music. With this momentum, Bolyard and Updike decided it was time to transform manners, please. into a full-on rock band, adding

Wanda Jackson 9 p.m. Jackson had to cancel her last booked stop in Indy, so we’re happy to see her back through these parts. The legendary singer/yodeler has made some hip connections in the past few years: recording with Justin Townes Earle and Jack White. Of course she’s always been the definition of cool (she dated Elvis!). But a resurgence of interest in rockabilly has Jackson back on top once again. Here’s a bit from an interview with Jackson talking about her thoughts on the recent popularity of rockabilly: “If you can play a guitar at all, if you know three chords, you can sing probably your favorite rockabilly song. I think the innocence of the music, it takes everyone back immediately in your thoughts to the ‘50s, when things were slower-paced. When teenagers could be teenagers. They didn’t have to worry so much about walking home from the theater, walking to a restaurant or something. I wish it could still be that way for our young people, but it seems like they have to grow up a little faster these days.”

Crunkasaurus Rex, Settle Your Scores, The Weekend Classic, Forget Me Not, Hypewriter, 6 p.m. Indy’s Crunkasaurus Rex is bringing an easy-core party to The Hoosier Dome. It’ll be hard to relax this summer Sunday, because pop punk fanatics will be here to posi-jump and push-mosh their hearts to oblivion. Hopefully there will be pizza and plenty of pals singing about girls that broke their hearts. Settle Your Scores and The Weekend Classic will provide a likewise Four Year Strong-ish style, while Forget Me Not and Hypewriter lean towards more brutal breakdowns. This local showcase is all-ages. JAZZ
Full Circle midnight Full Circle may be Indy’s best hard rock cover band. You want Disturbed? They’re down with the sickness. You want AC/DC? They’ll shake you all night long. According to their Facebook page, “Full Circle rarely uses a set list, instead relying on instincts from crowd response to keep the momentum going, in turn raising the bar on the party atmosphere.” If you can handle your party bar being raised, come check these guys out. This 21+ show starts at midnight.
Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra 7 p.m. The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will performing a special, intimate set at The Jazz Kitchen. For $15, you can experience the prestigious group performing tributes to the Duke Ellington Orchestra as well as music from legend Jimmy Van Heusen. Get your class on this Tuesday. Wear a monocle. Pretend you are a jazz expert.
5th Quarter Lounge, 306 Prospect St., 21+ ROOTS Gill Landry 8 p.m. Gill Landry (of Old Crow Medicine Show) should be so much bigger than he is. Falling in line with country/folk singersongwriters like Sun Kil Moon and Shakey Graves, Landry’s multi-instrument mastery is more than enough to impress anyone. His lyrics paint a vivid image and his melodies serve him as the perfect canvas.
The Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave., 21+ FREE BBI 7 p.m. Chicago’s BBI is making its way south to party with the Fishers Concert Series. This band seems like it would be the perfect act to play your wedding, with an enormous repertoire and killer live show. They’ve been partying for over 20 years, and it seems like they’re not planning to stop any time soon. This all-ages show is free. — Anonymous, from Tumblr SARAH: We have voted and this first sentence is the best sentence we here at NUVO have ever read from the Sex Doc inbox. As far as skincare goes, I would go the normal route of slathering on some aloe and vitamin E and just waiting it out. As far as sex goes, I would only do what is comfortable. If it feels okay, then it’s probably okay. A good bet for “taking the sting out” is pouring hot water over some tea bags and then letting them chill in the freezer. Lay them on the area and let the coldness, caffeine and antiinflammatory properties do their thing. By the way, I would do almost anything to hear this story, and you are cruel, reader, for not including more details. DR. D: Genital skin is particularly susceptible to sunburn when exposed, as you well know. A little rest, aloe vera gel, or other gentle after-care topical cream or gel will speed the healing (and comfort) along. You may want to lay off of masturbation and/or partnered sex that involves for your penis for a few days for your own comfort, though it won’t damage your skin if you decide to masturbate or have sex — it’s more about your own comfort. As for the future, do try to keep your genital skin protected whether through keeping them covered when sunbathing or using sunscreen as possible, as some research has found skin cancers to be disproportionately located on the genitals. In other words, given what a small surface of skin the genitals are, you wouldn’t expect many skin cancers to be found there, but in fact more are found on the genital skin than one would be expect, so do be careful.

maybe do more grinding than thrusting. Maybe you or he LIKES lots of in and out — well, then, be measured about it. If you pay attention to how far up you can go before you need to go back down, you’ll eventually find your rhythm. You could do the first few ups and downs kind of slowly until you figure it out and then do as you like, once your bodies sync up. Trust me: I’ve been there, we’ve figured it out, and there’s hope. Enjoy.
DR. DEBBY HERBENICK & SARAH MURRELL Slip Sliding Away When I’m on top of my BF, I find he slips out a lot more often. Is there a way for me to have sex on top that won’t make him slip out of me so often? — Anonymous, from Tumblr
I don’t really want to explain how, but I sunburned my penis. Now, obviously, I’m a little nervous about sex and/or condoms. Should I just lay off the sex until it heals? Any advice on how to care for the skin here?
ARTS
SARAH: You’ve got to let him help position your body so you’re better aligned, and no one knows the ideal angle of a dick during girl-on-top than the one who has one. Otherwise, minimize the movement by going with a grind rather than a full-on, up-and-down motion, or restrict it to halfway so you’re not putting your man at risk for penis breakage, which is a real thing. DR. D: Slippage happens for many different reasons. Some of it has to do with how your genitals and your partner’s genitals line up. Penises on the smaller end sometimes slip out more often as do penises that are going in and out of a very highly lubricated partner. And if you’re rising up and down a lot — creating lots of in and out — plain old probability suggests that on some of those “outs”, it may not go back in as easily (this, by the way, is also one of the more common ways that penile breaks happen — which is when a guy’s erect penis comes out of his partner’s body and, instead of going back inside the vagina or anus, instead hits against his partner’s body). So…. how to fix it? That depends on what you think (from the possibilities above) may be happening. A common enough fix: If he’s on the smaller side or you ooze lots of natural lubrication,
What does that even mean?! What’s the best position for a woman? Any particular position that maximizes friction/tightness? — Anonymous, from Tumblr SARAH: Wh….what? What does this even mean? Like, what it the best position for a woman’s pleasure? What is the best position for preventing wrinkles? What’s the best position that makes a woman feel most empowered in her femininity? Assuming you mean the former, that’s just not a thing. One woman’s “boring” missionary is another woman’s orgasm treasure box. You have to go out there and try a whole bunch of different positions and then ask your partners what they like, ya dingus.
the g spot. So many reasons CAT is a good option…. but it’s not the only one and it’s not the best one and more friction/tightness is not what’s best for everyone so watch one another, communicate, and check out fun sex books or websites that offer a range of positions (and modifications of the more common positions). And don’t be afraid to make your own tweaks — to see how it feels if your or your partner’s knees are slightly closer or further apart, if you change how hard or soft sex feels, if you bring a little more adventurous sex play or BDSM into the picture, if you role play, and so on. That’s all part of the adventure to whatever extent you and your partner are into it.
Coffee-fueled confidence Sometimes I feel like if I drink coffee right before sex, it makes me last longer. Is this just in my mind or is this a real thing? — Anonymous, from Tumblr SARAH: Who knows! As a person with ADHD, caffeine makes me feel relaxed and focused. For others, though, caffeine makes them feel anxious and jittery. A lot of people have a variety of reactions to caffeine, and maybe this is yours. Lucky you! The jolt you get may help you focus on your partner’s reactions or your own sensations. Either way, better, longer sex is, well, better.
One woman’s “boring” missionary is another woman’s orgasm treasure box. — SARAH
DR. D: There’s no “best” position for all women on the face of the planet! If there were, men’s and women’s magazines would have super boring headlines and fewer writers to give work to and having sex with a new partner would have a lot less mystery. (There’s no best position for men, either, or people of any other gender or genital design.) People like different positions for different reasons and it sometimes changes day to day or throughout a person’s life. Take regular old missionary, for example — there’s really nothing “regular” about it, given all the variations that are possible. My favorite variation is called the Coital Alignment Technique (CAT) which I went on at length about in my first book, Because It Feels Good, and for a reason — it’s one of the few intercourse positions that’s been tested in research studies and that’s been found to help make intercourse orgasms easier for women. Here’s how it works: a woman lays on her back with her partner’s shoulders lined up just past hers (closer to her ears). Her feet are planted on the bed or other place-where-sex-is-happening; this allow her to have better leverage to move her hips and create more friction, if she wants it. Rather than lots of in and out thrusting that leave the clitoris unattended for moments at a time, the focus is more on grinding which gives the clitoris much more attention and love. At the same time, the vagina is being constantly stimulated and her partner’s weight may be bearing down on the mons, thus sandwiching
DR. D: There’s not a lot of strong research on the effects of caffeine (or coffee, specifically) and people’s sexual MURRELL performance, but if you’ve noticed that for yourself, it’s worth paying attention to. I’ve been answering people’s questions about sex for about 15 years now and I’ve heard so many different versions of this. Some women feel their orgasms are easier on a full bladder (whether from drinking water or coffee) than an empty bladder and others feel the opposite. Some men feel their performance is enhanced by a full bladder (again, no matter the drink for some; and others have a specific drink in mind like coffee or beer) and others can’t keep their erection for long if they have to pee. There are similar idiosyncrasies when it comes to exercise or sleep. Given how small the sex research community is, and how underfunded sex research is, I wouldn’t expect too many answers any time soon to these kinds of common questions about pleasure and enhancement, but if you’ve picked up some wisdom about your own body, you’re the expert on it and it may just be how you “work”. Good for you for noticing.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): During my regular hikes along my favorite trails, I’ve gotten to know the local boulders quite intimately. It might sound daft, but I’ve come to love them. I’ve even given some of them names. They symbolize stability and constancy to me. When I gaze at them or sit on them, I feel my own resolve grow stronger. They teach me about how to be steadfast and unflappable in all kinds of weather. I draw inspiration from the way they are so purely themselves, forever true to their own nature. Now would be an excellent time for you to hang out with your own stony Aries. You could use a boost in your ability to ALLI allies, express the qualities they embody. Taurus

CANCER (June 21-July 22): In its early days, the band Depeche Mode had the infinitely boring name Composition of Sound. Humphrey Bogart’s and Ingrid Bergman’s classic 1942 film Casablanca was dangerously close to being called Everybody Come to Rick’s. And before Charles Dickens published his novel Bleak House, a scathing critique of the 19th-century British judicial system, he considered eleven other possible titles, including the unfortunate Tom-all-Alone’s. The Solitary House that was always shut up and never Lighted. I bring this to your attention, Cancerian, as the seeding phase of your personal cycle gets underway. Near the creek we found an anthill swarming with black ants, and scooped a bunch of them in the jar. A little later we came upon a caravan of red ants, and shoved many of them in with the black ants. Would they fight? Naturally. It was mayhem. Looking back now, I’m sorry I participated in that stunt. Why stir up a pointless war? In that spirit, Leo, I urge you to avoid unnecessary conflicts. Don’t do anything remotely comparable to putting red ants and black ants in the same jar. Leo

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In order for everyone in your sphere to meet their appointed destinies, you must cultivate your skills as a party animal. I’m only slightly joking. At least for now, it’s your destiny to be the catalyst of conviviality, the ringleader of the festivities, the engineer of fun and games. To fulfill your assignment, you may have to instigate events that encourage your allies to leave their comfort zones and follow you into the frontiers of collaborative amusement. Virgo

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The taskmaster planet Saturn wove its way through the sign of Scorpio from October 2012 until the end of 2014. Now it has slipped back into your sign for a last hurrah. Between now and mid-September. I urge you to milk its rigorous help in every way you can imagine. For example, cut away any last residues of trivial desires and frivolous ambitions. Hone your focus and streamline your self-discipline. Once and for all, withdraw your precious energy from activities that waste your time and resist your full engagement. And if you’re serious about capitalizing on Saturn’s demanding gifts, try this ritual: Write either “I will never squander my riches” or “I will make full use of my riches” twenty times — whichever motivates you most. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The advanced lessons on tap in the coming days are not for the squeamish, the timid, the lazy, or the stubborn. But then you’re not any of those things, right? So there shouldn’t be a major problem. The purpose of these subterranean adventures and divine interventions is to teach you to make nerveracking leaps of faith, whether or not you believe you’re ready. Here’s one piece of advice that I think will help: Don’t resist and resent the tests as they appear. Rather, welcome them as blessings you don’t understand yet. Be alert for the liberations they will offer. Sagittarius

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “I think if we didn’t contradict ourselves, it would be awfully boring,” says author Paul Auster. “It would be tedious to be alive.” But he goes even further in his defense of inconsistency, adding, “Changing your mind is probably one of the most beautiful things people can do.” This bold assertion may not apply to everyone all the time, but it does for you in the coming weeks, Gemini. You should feel free to explore and experiment with the high art of changing your mind. I dare you to use it to generate extravagant amounts of beauty. Pisces

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Your symbolic object of the week is a magic wand. I recommend that you visualize yourself as the star of a fairy tale in which you do indeed have a wand at your disposal. See yourself wielding it to carry out a series of fantastic tricks, like materializing a pile of gold coins or giving yourself an extraordinary power to concentrate or creating an enchanted drink that allows you to heal your toughest wound. I think this playful imaginative exercise will subtly enhance your ability to perform actual magic in the real world.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “Everyone is a genius at least once a year,” wrote German aphorist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. “The real geniuses simply have their bright ideas closer together.” According to my astrological analysis, Taurus, your once-a-year explosion of genius is imminent. It’s even possible you will experience a series of eruptions that continue for weeks. The latter scenario is most likely if you unleash the dormant parts of your intelligence through activities like these: having long, rambling conversations with big thinkers; taking long, rambling walks all over creation; enjoying long, rambling sex while listening to provocative music. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Man’s being is like a vast mansion,” observed philosopher Colin Wilson, “yet he seems to prefer to live in a single room in the basement.” Wilson wasn’t just referring to Capricorns. He meant everybody. Most of us commit the sin of self-limitation on a regular basis. That’s the bad news. The good news, Capricorn, is that you’re entering a time when you’re more likely to rebel against the unconscious restrictions you have placed on yourself. You will have extra motivation to question and overrule the rationales that you used in the past to inhibit your primal energy. Won’t it be fun to venture out of your basement nook and go explore the rest of your domain? Capricorn

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “An obscure moth from Latin America saved Australia’s pasture-land from the overgrowth of cactus,” writes biologist Edward O. Wilson. “A Madagascar ‘weed,’ the rosy periwinkle, provided the cure for Hodgkin’s disease and childhood leukemia,” he adds, while “a chemical from the saliva of leeches dissolves blood clots during surgery,” and a “Norwegian fungus made possible the organ transplant industry.” I think these are all great metaphors for the kind of healing that will be available for you in the coming weeks, Aquarius: humble, simple, seemingly insignificant things whose power to bring transformation has, up until now, been secret or unknown. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “She is hard to tempt, as everything seems to please her equally,” said artist Anne Raymo in describing a hedonistic acquaintance. A similar statement may soon apply to you, Pisces. You will have a talent for finding amusement in an unusually wide variety of phenomena. But more than that: You could become a connoisseur of feeling really good. You may even go so far as to break into a higher octave of pleasure, communing with exotic phenomena that we might call silken thrills and spicy bliss and succulent revelry. Pisces
