SUN KING If this is the first time you’re hearing about Sun King … well, welcome to Indianapolis, new resident! Sun King celebrated their 4th year of business this year, and they’ve been winning the NUVO Best Indiana Beer category pretty much ever since — along with national awards as well. A specialty brew, Grapefruit Jungle, was created for their aforementioned anniversary, and you know you can also rely on such favorites as Osiris, Wee Mac and Sunlight Cream Ale. The bustling brewery’s tasting room has become one of the best places to be on a Friday at 5:30… or a Saturday…or a Thursday. Fill your growler, buy some cans and/or sit and sip and meet all the folks who enjoy a well crafted, lovingly attended brew. Sun King’s beers are ubiquitous — from liquor stores to restaurants and bars to Victory Field and beyond — and we can drink to that! 135 N. he Broad Ripple-based Marigold is a quaint and eclectic shop that has the feel of visiting an old friend’s house. And that’s exactly what owner Linda Shikany wants. “I think that familiarity makes people want to come back. We all want a connection, want to feel connected,” Shikany explains as we chat in another familiar Broad Ripple location, Monon Food Company. Shikany, 54, opened Marigold in 1989 when she was transferred to Indy from her retail job in Ohio. “When they moved me here, my first thoughts on Indy were, ‘Oh my god, this city is not fun.’ I couldn’t find a store that had artsy, funky pieces. I liked cleaner looks and I wanted natural fabrics, and at the time, I just couldn’t find it,” Shikany recalls. After talking it over with her friend, and soon-to-be business partner, she developed a business plan … and just went for it. Shikany was 29 then and now, a quarter century later, Marigold is a staple around the Broad Ripple area; well known and appreciated in a time when many boutiques and “mom and pop” retailers have

closed down, Marigold is thriving. “I think our style has been true and I think that’s one reason people love us,” Shikany says. “We’re about style, not fad, and we’re about making sure we help that customer put something together in a way they’ll feel comfortable and will have a look for who they are, no matter their age or size. That’s what we do.” Shikany considers Marigold a familyoriented business, given, for example, its commitment to the community, often donating to local charities, helping with fundraisers and volunteering. But the family feel also has a literal aspect. Shikany’s niece, Elizabeth Shikany, 27, joined her aunt full time in 2006 as the store manager and head of marketing. “At a time when I didn’t know a lot of people here, the girls at the shop became my family and the customers are like family, too,” Elizabeth says. “Our customers show their support,” Elizabeth adds, “and to be voted for this tells us that we’re really doing what we’re supposed to be doing.” “We’ve stayed true to ourselves,” Linda Shikany notes. “You can’t be everything to everyone, you have to have a clear picture of who you are and stay true to that. And at the end of the day, it’s all still fun.”

Oliver Winery is always a marker to let you know when you’re almost to Bloomington. For those of you who do drive past, turn around and stop in to see what NUVO readers have polled as the Best Indiana Wine for now the sixth year in a row. Started in the 1960s by Indiana University Law Professor William Oliver, the winery boasts an array of wines from sweet Rieslings to deep Merlots all made from grapes grown in Indiana. Yes, Indiana has a “wine country,” who knew? Oliver also offers tours, tastings and shopping, and many retailers carry several of Oliver’s popular wines. 8024 N. KAHN’S FINE WINES & SPIRITS Going into Kahn’s is like walking into a giant house made entirely of beers, wines and liquor. Sounds overwhelming, and it is, but in the best way. Perhaps that’s why Kahn’s has won this category yet again. With beer ranging from 40oz High Life to local brews like Triton to beers you didn’t even know existed, Kahn’s is a liquor store you won’t walk out of empty handed. Beyond beer, their wine selection has bottles for every price range and there are aisles for miles of assorted vodkas, whiskeys and more. If you start to notice yourself standing in front of the fridges, mouth gaping, just ask one of the many expert staff, who can help you wipe that bewildered look off your face. Did we mention the sale prices and regular tastings? Now we did! Whatever your alcohol needs, Kahn’s has got you covered. 5341 N. Keystone Ave., 251-9463; 2342 W. 86th St., 228-9463; 25 N. BIG HAT BOOKS Bookstores may have been closing down in recent years, but there’s a reason Big Hat Books isn’t going anywhere. From its cozy, East Coast beach house feel to the amazing selection of books that will have you spending hours browsing (and likely buying), Big Hat is a Broad Ripple bookstore you want to spend the night in. And with book readings, signings and workshops, it’s more than just a cute place that sells books. As far as bookstores go, we’d say Big Hat is a ten-gallon. Congrats to them on their seventh win in a row! Editor’s note: This year, Indy Reads Books was a write-in candidate —and received a tremendous amount of support. JOHN GREEN THIS YEAR’S WINNER FOR BEST LOCAL AUTHOR B Y SC O T T SH O G E R SSHO G ER@ N U VO . N ET

e’re taking a cue from John Green himself in presenting a few outtakes from our in-depth 2012 interview with the author. After all, Green is at a point in his career where his books — like the extraordinarily successful, Indianapolis-based The Fault in Our Stars — are being reissued in fresh, exclusive editions with unique content (say, interviews by publications other than NUVO). For the uninitiated, Green is an author of smart, profound YA novels about death, love and religion, among other concerns; a vlogger (often with his brother, Hank) whose every video is viewed hundreds of thousands of times; and an activist who encourages his followers to fight global injustice or “worldsuck.” NUVO: Did you always want to write for teenagers? JOHN GREEN: I always wanted to write for teenagers, but I always thought they’d publish for adults. NUVO: Is that a notion of reaching audience that comes with less baggage or is that where your voice is? JOHN GREEN: A lot of it is that I like teenage readers because they’re doing so much stuff for the first time, and they’re engaging with these deep philosophical questions for the first time, and they’re doing it so really un-ironically. And they don’t apologize or feel embarrassed about it. That’s the main reason. NUVO: And those distinctions are breaking down in the e-book world...
GREEN: If you read on your Kindle, there’s no erotica section or young adult section. The whole reason 50 Shades of Grey is successful is because while there have been erotic novels like 50 Shades of Grey, many of them better, for decades, they were always in the erotic section of a bookstore where no self-respecting person would fear to tread. Some of it is that the genre distinctions break down, and if they break down for a few thousand Nook or Kindle readers, then those people go to their friends and say, “I just read a great book,” and even if those people don’t have Nooks, they’ll go to the bookstore and buy them. The most encouraging thing to me about the new publishing world is that all of these very rigid genre distinctions that are based around “where will we shelve the book in the store?” are starting to crumble. NUVO: And in a similar sense, you have your own online store to sell work by yourself and others (dftba.com, a marketplace for John Greeninspired projects, from albums to posters).
GREEN: Yeah, we have a way of doing it really efficiently. It’s nice because one of my favorite things about all of the work that I do is the work that is done in response to it. In a lot of ways, I think that my books and my videos are responses to other projects — and to see other projects, in turn, continue to grow from the stuff that I’m making is really, really cool. Before, there was no efficient way for you to say, “I like that artwork, and I want to own it, and I want to find a way to give the person who made it more that fifty cents.” We think it’s a good business, but I think one of the driving factors is that if there’s a talented artist in Malaysia who deserves to be able to pay for college through her art, then we’d like to make that happen.

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS You've got a couple more months to check out the BIGGEST EXHIBITION OF ALL TIME — wait, no, it was the biggest movie of all time. In any case, Avatar: The Exhibition at The Children's Museum is definitely worth a visit before Sept. 22 because a) it's a good way to prepare your children for living on a globally warmed, natural resource depleted planet (they'll have to learn sometime); b) you can pretend to be a Na'vi (in an awesome motioncapture chamber) and create Pandora plants; and c) there are real-live props and costumes. 3000 N. INDIANAPOLIS ART CENTER Yes, it hosts art classes and camps for kids and adults — but the Indianapolis Art Center can also be thought of as a giant gallery (or several smaller galleries if you prefer). This summer you can check out a typically diverse showcase for artists from around the country that's anchored by a group show, Under Construction, featuring work created using tape, debris and sod. And that's only inside: Out in the ArtsPark you can check out Lee Littlefield's whimsical sculptures that blend animal and plant life in a whimsical, Seussical fashion. Ragsdale has been active and well loved for about 20 years now, both for his own work (shadowy, stately, halfremembered) and for working with others as curator of the Harrison Art Gallery (since 2002) and a set designer and painter for Phoenix Theatre (since 2004). And he's been a genuine arts enthusiast since he got here; here's what Ragsdale told NUVO in 2005: “I think that this is a great town to be an artist. But the show went on — including some remarkable ones, like a world premiere of an “improv” concerto written for ensemble-in-residence Time for Three and a concert featuring members of NYC's NewAm collective (now an ISO partner). There's no better spot for young lovers than our brightly-lit, paddle boat-filled, Segway-infested canal. No better place for joggers either — though, joggers, you'll need to watch out for those young lovers canoodling in the corner, right beside that lovely mural installed as part of 46 for XLVI. ounded in 1960 and operated pretty much continuously since then, Eastside’s Historic Steer-In Diner is a greasy spoon that makes you wish cholesterol didn’t count. Quaint and slightly antiquated, it’s the type of place where the highest honor achieved is to be on a first-name basis with the waitresses and the short order cooks, who look up from the hash to raise a spatula your way — a salute that says “I know just how runny you like your eggs.” And those regulars showed up in droves this year in the Best of Indy poll. It’s rare for a write-in candidate to place, let alone win a category. The Steer-in was represented in four, winning Best Pork Tenderloin, and taking 3rd place for Best Pizza, 2nd for best brunch and 3rd for Budget-Minded dining. The menu is as long as a novel, with every chapter as enticing as the last. Breakfast isn’t fancy, just robust and exactly what you had in mind. For example, the 10th Street Skillet is an unapologetic serving of biscuits and gravy with two eggs, potatoes and cheddar cheese, and a declaration that you are there to enjoy yourself. Most of the edible highlights are on the lunch/dinner menu. The meatball sub is

It grows like mutant cauliflower on an infected corn cob — and it is earthily delicious, particularly when combined with corn, onion and spices at El Sol. 2444 E. LOCAL GREEK OR MEDITERRANEAN
SANTORINI GREEK KITCHEN Rising like the phoenix (and that word does come to us from the ancient Greek) after a fire that left it briefly closed a few years back, Santorini is a charming, family-owned and -friendly restaurant that’s a sure bet for any starting off their night in Fountain Square. You can’t miss it on Prospect just south of the fountain; there is no bluer building in Indianapolis. That’s true respect for the Greek flag right there. Belly dancers drop by on most weekend nights, and the patio is perfect during the summer. As always, we highly recommend the galaktaboureko for dessert. 1417 Prospect St., 917-1117, santorini-greek-kitchen.com 2nd: Greek Islands 3rd: BARcelona Tapas LOCAL MIDDLE EASTERN OR AFRICAN RESTAURANT
SAFFRON CAFÉ A blast of color and spice in the shadow of the brutalist Minton-Capeheart Federal Building, Saffron Cafe has fast become a downtown international dining staple. Chef Anass Sentissi, who also happens to be an expert Middle Eastern percussionist, is something of an entrepreneur: He opened his second restaurant, the Moroccan don’t-call-it-fast-food stop Poccadio, in Broad Ripple last year. Both are excellent bets, but Saffron is where you’ll find dishes that take that little bit (or lot bit) of extra time, from a classic paella (with shrimp, salmon, mussels, chicken and more) to lamb honey (a honey-glazed leg roasted with pears, prunes and apricots). 621 Fort Wayne Ave., 917-0131, saffroncafe-indy.com 2nd: Bosphorus Istanbul Café 3rd: Egyptian Café LOCAL ENGLISH PUB OR CELTIC FOOD

SHAPIRO’S DELICATESSEN News came down the pike this summer that Shapiro’s would be closing its Carmel location — but, really, the South Meridian storefront has all the charm, with its old-school linoleum and sometimes mouthy line cooks. Yes, we all know they serve giant, heart-stopping corned beef and pastrami sandwiches — and those are acceptable indulgences every once in a while. But those looking for the best food-to-price ratio will opt for the dinners — baked chicken, stuffed peppers or cabbage, meatloaf — which come with a couple sides, a slice of bread, a pickle and should also leave you absolutely stuffed. 808 S. Ave and Alabama. Two other restaurants have tried and failed there in short order, but for no good reason: The patio, facing a triangular pocket park, is a happening spot, one of the best for people watching in the city; and the space itself is slender, extensively windowed and enough off Mass Ave that you can probably find a good parking spot. And, oh yeah, the burgers are great: the bread rolls nothing short of perfect, the toppings well thought out and complementary to the succulent meat. 410 Massachusetts Ave., 635-4278, bruonmass.com 2nd: Workingman’s Friend 3rd: Boogie Burger LOCAL PIZZA
BAZBEAUX Sure, the latest thing is that thin crust, Italian style with dollops of fresh mozzarella and very little sauce, but we feel a certain sense of loyalty to those on the vanguard of pizza excellence in this town. Bazbeaux occupies three quite convenient locations on Mass Ave and in Broad Ripple and Carmel. That Mass Ave spot moved across the street a little while back, adding an excellent bar area and moving all seating above ground. The menu’s dependable, ranging from fully-loaded carnivorous options (the Tchoupitoulas, with its Cajun shrimp, peppers and Andouille sausage) to veggie pies that draw on the whole garden. 811 E. ST. ELMO STEAK HOUSE We’ll take it from NUVO’s food critic emeritus Neil Charles: “There can be doubt that, since I first dined at St. Elmo over 20 years ago, the quality of their meat has improved enormously, quite an achievement when one considers the sheer volume of cattle passing through its various kitchens.” And it was pretty damn good to begin with. New York Strips are every bit as tender and properly aged as you’d expect. And you really can’t go wrong with any other cuts, notably the filet mignon (more or less perfect, night in, night out). 127 S. SCOTTY’S BREWHOUSE A sports bar is only as good as its wings, and you’ve opted for Scotty’s. They’re available with a variety of sauces, five of which are available in take-home bottles (mo’fo hot, mo’fo mild, bar-bq, spicy bar-b-q and mo’fo mustard), as well as the quite excellent garlic teriyaki, mo’fo thai peanut and old mainstay honey mustard. Boneless wings are, of course, available. All the above options go well with any of Scotty’s homemade Thr3e Wise Men brews, though the paler the better if you’re opting for hotter varieties — the Centennial Martyr Double IPA should have the
stones to stand up to even the mo’fo sauce. 1 Virginia Ave.,571-0808; 3905 E. 96th St., 574-0101; scottysbrewhouse.com 2nd: Chatham Tap 3rd: Ale Emporium LOCAL PORK TENDERLOIN
INDY’S HISTORIC STEER-IN Best Local Tenderloin is a distinction not to be taken lightly. So it’s a real coup for Indy’s Historic Steer-In diner to take the title this year. And as a write-in pick, no less. Like many others around the city, Steer-In’s is the size of a catcher’s mitt, but it sets itself apart with the evident freshness of their juicy cuts of pork. It’s not extravagant, just a well-seasoned slice of pig that packs flavor in every bite. ST. ELMO STEAK HOUSE No surprise here: St. Elmo tops your list for best upscale dining and its offshoot (with two locations: downtown and on 86th Street) comes in at number two. Newcomer Recess, with its clever prix fixe menu and lack of large steaks and horseradish-infused dish-

We’ll add one: Comedian Lewis Black says St. Elmo is one of his favorite things about Indy, both because of the quality of the food and because they deliver. MAMA CAROLLA’S A perennial winner. It just goes to show that our notions of romance haven’t changed that much since the Elizabethan era. We all fancy ourselves Romeo and/or Juliet — or maybe Lucy in a Room with a View — being swept away by Italy’s crumbling monumentality, sultry fertility, operatic intensity, carb-loaded sauce-ity and cinched-tight codpiece-ity. And because we don’t really feel like flying over a cliff or have an expense account for European travel, we’re pretty sure Mama Carolla’s will satisfy our needs. Or, you can party on South Meridian with Best of Indy DJ winner Matt Allen. “I was introduced to the electronic music scene well over a decade ago,” Allen says. “I was fortunate enough to be a regional artist representative for a national label where I became exposed to its excitement both locally and all over the Midwest.” When he returned home to Indianapolis (the label now defunct), Allen brought that excitement back to the clubs, where he began performing regularly. After a residency at Broad Ripple club Tru, he relocated Downtown, bringing his remixheavy style with him. Allen doesn’t just bring music to the floor — he uses videos too, creating a full-fledged multi-sensory experience. A few examples of his music video mashups: Justice vs Simian vs MGMT (“We Are Your Kids Friends”); Fall Out Boy

vs Jung Joc ft. Queen (“Sugar Is Going Down”); Smashing Pumpkin vs Rihanna (“Rockstar Zero”). “As I began compiling content, I realized there was a market for such production and begin releasing tracks on remix sites such as beatfreakz and extremeremix and began selling remixes on a national level.” This was a success for Allen, who quickly moved on to bigger collaborations. “This led me to the involvement in several national collectives such as Remix

Network and 914 Hit Squad where we produce exclusive content for remix DJs around the globe.” Allen calls his style “Blend,” dedicated to his love of high-energy EDM remixes and samples. It’s not just the name of his Saturday night weekly party at 247 Sky Bar — it’s a full fledged brand. And although his mixes have an international audience, Allen is at home right here in Indianapolis. “Indianapolis has a lot of musical talent throughout every genre and [there’s] people working hard to keep music relevant here,” Allen says. “I hope to continue the success we have had with my brand as well as contributing effort to everyone keeping Indianapolis a place where music is important.” Allen makes a point of inviting regional and nationally touring remix artists to share the stage with him. He can’t announce any of those names yet, but they’re guaranteed to be good ones — Allen’s just got that kind of cred. Those interested in listening to some of Allen’s remixes can head to blendnights. com, where he has posted content for the better part of a year. But we recommend you just head straight to Sky Bar and experience the blend live. Grab your dancing shoes.
LOCAL ROCK ARTIST/GROUP RECOIL First, a disclaimer. Recoil guitarist Darrell Mitchell works at NUVO. And before you ask, no, no, this has nothing to do with the band’s placement in this year’s Best of Indy poll. Recoil’s fans are crazy about this Indy band, voting them tops in Best Rock and Best Cover Band. They’ve mastered hours upon hours of cover tracks, from classics to contemporary radio hits, and they’re ready to enter the studio to record their own tracks in late summer. Everything Recoil does is huge: from fog machines and lights to huge, soaring riffs. Recoil’s a non-stop party band coming soon to a venue near you. reverbnation.com/recoilkick 2nd: The Twin Cats 3rd: Living Proof LOCAL ROOTS/FOLK ARTIST/GROUP REV. PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND Washboard in hand, this fast-churning throwback group whips their crowds into a frenzy. They sell out venues and festival stages both in our city and across the country. They’re a perennial Best of Indy favorite (even though they now make their home in Nashville, Ind.). The Rev, Breezy and Bird Dog Bussell are currently cruising around Europe, but don’t worry — they’ll be back in Indy for the State Fair. In the meantime, you can grab their album Between The Ditches, released last year. bigdamnband.com 2nd: Cara Jean Marcy 3rd: The Cousin Brothers LOCAL PUNK/HARDCORE ARTIST/GROUP GAY BLACK REPUBLICAN They were your favorite in 2011 and 2012, and now they’re back on top for 2013. Gay Black Republican may not contain any actual, homosexual African-Americans of a conservative persuasion, but they’re one of Indy’s favorite punk bands. They’re an occasional fixture at the Mel’s Punk Rock Night, as they should be (PRN curator Rich Barker’s in the band.) They’re releasing their newest self-titled LP Barker describes as, “politically charged with some tasteless explorations of other topics as well” at a show at the Mel on August 10. gayblackrepublican.com 2nd: Vacation Club 3rd: Stealing Volume

Devil to Pay
LOCAL METAL ARTIST/GROUP DEVIL TO PAY The latest from Indy’s favorite metal band of the year is hard to describe. NUVO writer Jeff Napier wrote at the time of the release, “Doom? Straight up metal? Stoner rock? Whatever Metallica called what they were doing after Master of Puppets and before Load? Give Fate Is Your Muse half a chance and it will change you.” Devil to Pay has changed the Indy metal scene for good – and they will play tracks from FIYM at our Best of Indy Party - Saturday, July 27. deviltopay.net 2nd: Coffinworm 3rd: Smoke Ring LOCAL HIP-HOP ARTIST/GROUP RUSTY REDENBACHER Rusty Redenbacher is back on top of the local hip-hop poll this year. It’s been a busy year for Rusty: on top of his regular slots on WTLC and the now-gone IMC, the former Birdmen of Alcatraz and Mudkids founder is tweeting, blogging and repping Indy constantly. Rusty’s mostly a solo player these days, and he’s going by a new moniker: The Tinkerer. He released the selfproduced LP Lower in early 2013, another fourstar entry into the sometimes-twisted, alwaysentertaining mind of Rusty. rustyredenbacher.com 2nd: Oreo Jones 3rd: Freeze LOCAL JAZZ ARTIST/GROUP ROB DIXON Indy’s all right, if you like saxophones. And Indy really likes this particular saxophone player, Best of Indy jazz winner, Rob Dixon. A David Baker acolyte, Dixon’s been associated with some of the best modern players of our time. He performs both contemporary and straight-ahead jazz, playing

We once called him our Musical Mayor — the name still fits! myspace.com/robdixonandtriology 2nd: Cathy Morris 3rd: Frank Glover LOCAL BLUES ARTIST/GROUP GOVERNOR DAVIS AND THE BLUES AMBASSADORS The Gov retired from the stage last year after a final performance with the Blues Ambassadors in October of 2012. But the Ambassadors continue on, with co-founding member Steve Robbins as bandleader now. Davis and his Blues Ambassadors placed in the top three of this category more than 15 times, winning the number one spot four times. The group has performed at many major Indy music events, including Indy Circlefest, Indy Jazz Fest and Zoobilation, along with the grand opening of Bankers Life Fieldhouse (then Conseco). governordavisandthebluesambassadors.com 2nd: Gordon Bonham 3rd: Gene Deer LOCAL COVER/TRIBUTE BAND RECOIL Your favorite rock band, Recoil, took the top honors for this brand new category, which showcases a band that’s mastered the category of covers. FOOD&DRINK • ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT • SHOPPING • LOCAL MUSIC&NIGHTLIFE LOCAL DJ MATT ALLEN Previously holding down a residency at Tru, Matt Allen has moved his electro-mashup night Downtown, to 247 Sky Bar, where he rocks out every Saturday night with a crowd of revelers tossing back mixed drinks and dominating the (many) dance floors. Allen, who says he was introduced to the now-exploded EDM scene over 10 years ago, has toured regionally and represented national labels. This is his first Best of Indy win. See pg. 44 for more on Allen. facebook.com/mattallendj 2nd:Rusty Redenbacher 3rd: Indiana Jones LOCAL EDM ARTIST SLATER HOGAN This is a brand new Best of Indy category because Indy’s EDM scene is growing by leaps and bounds. On top this year? The indomitable Slater Hogan, a promoter, DJ and producer who’s toured the world and come back home to Indy. After a brief stint last year booking the Murat’s new venue The Amber Room, Hogan’s back at his home base, Blu, on South Meridian, where he and John Larner put together weekly Keepin It Deep EDM shows. He performs in town regularly, with sets at Blu, Bartini’s, RA and The Vogue. He’s a party master and an incredible asset to Indy’s EDM scene. keepinitdeepevents.com 2nd: Matt Allen 3rd: Cosby Sweater LOCAL LABEL RAD SUMMER Indy loves its DJs — and its DJ-run labels. Rad Summer is a class act — they put together interesting releases from DJs, producers and (starting this year) local bands. Their consistently interesting roster features a few NUVO favorites, including Oreo Jones, K. Sabroso, Andy D, Drosh and Party Lines, along with a host of others. Helmed by the Indy/Philly combo of DJs Action Jackson and Flufftronix, Rad Summer’s ready for its close up. radsummer.com 2nd: GloryHole Records 3rd: Owl Studios LOCAL LIVE MUSIC VENUE (BAR/CLUB) RADIO RADIO Radio Radio owner Tufty Clough opened a new Fountain Square venue not too long ago, the Dia De Los Muertos-themed La Revolucion, but he’ll be hard-pressed to top his first club, the non-smoking, unostentatiously well-furnished, intelligently-booked, spacious but intimate Radio Radio. Consistently hosting some of the best and brightest local artists and a heavy rotation of up-and-coming and already arrived regional and national artists, Radio Radio is one the best places to see a show in town. The strong drinks and well-mixed sound makes this long-lived club a big reason why Fountain Square remains a perennially cool part of town. 1119 Prospect St., 955-0995, futureshock.net 2nd: Melody Inn 3rd: The Mousetrap
LOCAL LIVE MUSIC VENUE (THEATRE/AMPHITHEATRE) THE VOGUE The Vogue reached a milestone this year when it celebrated its 75th anniversary on the corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue. Of course, its days as a movie theater are long gone, but The Vogue has been putting on live shows featuring national, regional and local acts for 30 years. NUVO readers continue to vote The Vogue as the Best Live Music Theater/ Amphitheater in town, and we couldn’t agree more. The venue is one the most dependable, perfectly located, mid-sized concert halls in our city — a place where local bands play on the same stage as do superstars. 6259 N. They’ve earned 13 as the city’s Best Open Mic Night over the past two decades and 18 consecutive wins in the now-retired Best Blues Club category. Just like the sign out front says “Dis is it.” The Slippery Noodle really is the best the place in Indy for anyone who truly likes live blues performed by the best local and touring musicians. Multiple wins in multiple categories over the past few years have established Scotty’s as a proven favorite. Having such a terrific menu and delicious food doesn’t hurt. All the typical appetizers, sandwiches and burgers are there, but the fresh ingredients, imaginative sauces and spices (lotsa hot stuff!) make these taste better than many local restaurants not hosting sports fans and running a packed bar and patio. 1 Virginia Ave.,571-0808; 3905 E. 96th St., 574-0101; scottysbrewhouse.com 2nd: Chatham Tap 3rd: Kilroy’s PLACE TO TEAR UP THE DANCE FLOOR THE VOGUE Let us paint you a picture: Diplo, as Major Lazer, onstage with his glittery, spandex-clad dancers twirling around him; his hype man is spraying the screaming crowd with bottles of champagne and pulling girls onstage for “Bubble Butt.” Well, in that moment, there was nowhere we would have rather been than The Vogue, which has hosted some legendary dance nights. But don’t worry about it; just order a martini. Punks abound here, as do a healthy dose of other non-conformists — all of whom know the Melody Inn’s longtime commitment to the local music scene (and self-expression). They’ve recently added new dance nights like Souldies — a mix of oldies and soul held down by burlesque dancers and local DJs — that are punk in their own way, too. 3826 N. BAR/RESTAURANT/VENUE FOR HIPSTERS WHITE RABBIT This brand new category is contentious – well, as contentious as the term “hipster” always is. But here’s how we see it: the White Rabbit Cabaret is the perfect fit for hipsters of all kinds. They settle in at the Burlesque Bingo Bango nights; they groove with Action Jackson and the A-Squared DJs at Real Talk on the second Saturdays of each month; they rock out the mid-sized shows that come through regularly; and most of all, they drink.
