he Broad Ripple-based Marigold is a quaint and eclectic shop that has the feel of visiting an old friend’s house. And that’s exactly what owner Linda Shikany wants. “I think that familiarity makes people want to come back. We all want a connection, want to feel connected,” Shikany explains as we chat in another familiar Broad Ripple location, Monon Food Company. Shikany, 54, opened Marigold in 1989 when she was transferred to Indy from her retail job in Ohio. “When they moved me here, my first thoughts on Indy were, ‘Oh my god, this city is not fun.’ I couldn’t find a store that had artsy, funky pieces. I liked cleaner looks and I wanted natural fabrics, and at the time, I just couldn’t find it,” Shikany recalls. After talking it over with her friend, and soon-to-be business partner, she developed a business plan … and just went for it. Shikany was 29 then and now, a quarter century later, Marigold is a staple around the Broad Ripple area; well known and appreciated in a time when many boutiques and “mom and pop” retailers have

closed down, Marigold is thriving. “I think our style has been true and I think that’s one reason people love us,” Shikany says. “We’re about style, not fad, and we’re about making sure we help that customer put something together in a way they’ll feel comfortable and will have a look for who they are, no matter their age or size. That’s what we do.” Shikany considers Marigold a familyoriented business, given, for example, its commitment to the community, often donating to local charities, helping with fundraisers and volunteering. But the family feel also has a literal aspect. Shikany’s niece, Elizabeth Shikany, 27, joined her aunt full time in 2006 as the store manager and head of marketing. “At a time when I didn’t know a lot of people here, the girls at the shop became my family and the customers are like family, too,” Elizabeth says. “Our customers show their support,” Elizabeth adds, “and to be voted for this tells us that we’re really doing what we’re supposed to be doing.” “We’ve stayed true to ourselves,” Linda Shikany notes. “You can’t be everything to everyone, you have to have a clear picture of who you are and stay true to that. And at the end of the day, it’s all still fun.”

Oliver Winery is always a marker to let you know when you’re almost to Bloomington. e’re taking a cue from John Green himself in presenting a few outtakes from our in-depth 2012 interview with the author. After all, Green is at a point in his career where his books — like the extraordinarily successful, Indianapolis-based The Fault in Our Stars — are being reissued in fresh, exclusive editions with unique content (say, interviews by publications other than NUVO). For the uninitiated, Green is an author of smart, profound YA novels about death, love and religion, among other concerns; a vlogger (often with his brother, Hank) whose every video is viewed hundreds of thousands of times; and an activist who encourages his followers to fight global injustice or “worldsuck.” NUVO: Did you always want to write for teenagers? JOHN GREEN: I always wanted to write for teenagers, but I always thought they’d publish for adults. NUVO: Is that a notion of reaching audience that comes with less baggage or is that where your voice is? JOHN GREEN: A lot of it is that I like teenage readers because they’re doing so much stuff for the first time, and they’re engaging with these deep philosophical questions for the first time, and they’re doing it so really un-ironically. And they don’t apologize or feel embarrassed about it. That’s the main reason. NUVO: And those distinctions are breaking down in the e-book world...

GREEN: If you read on your Kindle, there’s no erotica section or young adult section. The whole reason 50 Shades of Grey is successful is because while there have been erotic novels like 50 Shades of Grey, many of them better, for decades, they were always in the erotic section of a bookstore where no self-respecting person would fear to tread. Some of it is that the genre distinctions break down, and if they break down for a few thousand Nook or Kindle readers, then those people go to their friends and say, “I just read a great book,” and even if those people don’t have Nooks, they’ll go to the bookstore and buy them. The most encouraging thing to me about the new publishing world is that all of these very rigid genre distinctions that are based around “where will we shelve the book in the store?” are starting to crumble. NUVO: And in a similar sense, you have your own online store to sell work by yourself and others (dftba.com, a marketplace for John Greeninspired projects, from albums to posters).

GREEN: Yeah, we have a way of doing it really efficiently. It’s nice because one of my favorite things about all of the work that I do is the work that is done in response to it. In a lot of ways, I think that my books and my videos are responses to other projects — and to see other projects, in turn, continue to grow from the stuff that I’m making is really, really cool. Before, there was no efficient way for you to say, “I like that artwork, and I want to own it, and I want to find a way to give the person who made it more that fifty cents.” We think it’s a good business, but I think one of the driving factors is that if there’s a talented artist in Malaysia who deserves to be able to pay for college through her art, then we’d like to make that happen.

But the show went on — including some remarkable ones, like a world premiere of an “improv” concerto written for ensemble-in-residence Time for Three and a concert featuring members of NYC's NewAm collective (now an ISO partner). HEARTLAND FILM FESTIVAL Chalk up another win for Heartland Film Festival, an annual showcase for uplifting films that awards some of the biggest prizes in the world and makes a point of treating filmmakers with style and projecting their work in the best possible conditions. Last year's winners were Cairo 678, a drama about sexual harassment in Egypt that took home $100,000; biking documentary Rising from Ashes ($25,000); and the animated short film Head over Heels ($10,000), which was nominated for a 2012 Academy Award. But the big event remains Saturday's parade and festival, which starts at Mass Ave and College and debouches onto the American Legion Mall, where the afternoon crosses into evening to the sound of 26 performers and DJs. And the Center for Urban Ecology is showing how public/academic partnerships can end up benefitting both students and the city at large. BUTLER BULLDOGS BASKETBALL The big news of the summer for the Butler Bulldogs is the departure of super-coach and ageless wonder Brad Stevens, who took an offer that simply couldn't be refused and became head coach of the Boston Celtics. The university was quick to name his successor, 34-year-old assistant coach Brandon Miller, a 2003 graduate who played for the Bulldogs as a point guard in the pre-Stevens era. SIAM SQUARE Food entrepreneur Ed Rudisell has been busy these past few years, opening Fountain Square’s Siam Square in 2008, Mass Ave’s Black Market in 2011 and the bàhn mi joint Rook in Fletcher Place earlier this year. All have earned top marks from this paper, and you seem to like them too. The flavors at Siam Square are always well-balanced; the curries, properly hot but sumptuous; and the thom yum lemongrass soup is tangy, scintillating fare. And it’s a good-looking space, painted and festooned in the reds, oranges and yellows of curry, with obligatory photos of Thailand to set the mood.

ounded in 1960 and operated pretty much continuously since then, Eastside’s Historic Steer-In Diner is a greasy spoon that makes you wish cholesterol didn’t count. Quaint and slightly antiquated, it’s the type of place where the highest honor achieved is to be on a first-name basis with the waitresses and the short order cooks, who look up from the hash to raise a spatula your way — a salute that says “I know just how runny you like your eggs.” And those regulars showed up in droves this year in the Best of Indy poll. It’s rare for a write-in candidate to place, let alone win a category. The Steer-in was represented in four, winning Best Pork Tenderloin, and taking 3rd place for Best Pizza, 2nd for best brunch and 3rd for Budget-Minded dining. The menu is as long as a novel, with every chapter as enticing as the last. Breakfast isn’t fancy, just robust and exactly what you had in mind. For example, the 10th Street Skillet is an unapologetic serving of biscuits and gravy with two eggs, potatoes and cheddar cheese, and a declaration that you are there to enjoy yourself. Most of the edible highlights are on the lunch/dinner menu. The meatball sub is

Seems like every time you turn around there’s a new outpost of the Japanese mini-chain Naked Tchopstix. This year saw the opening of a food court location, Ban by Naked Tchopstix, in the newly renovated Fashion Mall. Sushi is promptly made to order for beleaguered shoppers, and there’s a hot bar, too, running $10 a pound. Plus, a full-scale restaurant should open later this summer in Anson, the master-planned community west of Zionsville. That makes, by our last count, four restaurants (in Broad Ripple, Carmel, Fort Wayne and Newport, Ky.), plus three food court locations (Fashion Mall, Hoosier Park in Anderson and the Airport). Its baseballsize mashups of veal, beef and Italian sausage are strong on the garlic and pair perfectly with the homemade marinara sauce and asiago cheese atop an oventoasted baguette. Other home runs include the beef and noodles, made with such care your mother would be envious. The noodles, made daily, are tender, the gravy is rich, and the

beef shows its slow cooking. For groups that can’t decide, splitting a Chicago-style stuffed pizza should settle the argument. The crust is thick and moist until the crisp top layer. Cheese is abundant and the toppings are of your own choosing. Establishments like the Steer-In are what made Indy edible before fine dining was part of the city’s culinary lexicon. It’s about good people making good food at a good price.

INDIA GARDEN Sometimes we stray, but when we come back, hungry, bereft, seeking Indian comfort food of the most reasonably priced and endless variety, India Garden is there for us, with its two convenient locations (Downtown and Broad Ripple) and endless supply of naan, both plain and garlic-flavored. Options abound for both vegetarians and meat, and it’s all restrainedly spiced, because this is a buffet for all. Plus, you can come back for the dinner menu if you want

You can find typical Mexican faves here — some topped or cooked in an excellent mole sauce — but what most impresses is El Sol’s commitment to the vegetarian diner. Our favorite filling for vegetarian dishes is the huitlacoche — also known as corn truffle, corn fungus, or least appetizingly, corn smut. It grows like mutant cauliflower on an infected corn cob — and it is earthily delicious, particularly when combined with corn, onion and spices at El Sol. 2444 E. SANTORINI GREEK KITCHEN Rising like the phoenix (and that word does come to us from the ancient Greek) after a fire that left it briefly closed a few years back, Santorini is a charming, family-owned and -friendly restaurant that’s a sure bet for any starting off their night in Fountain Square. You can’t miss it on Prospect just south of the fountain; there is no bluer building in Indianapolis. That’s true respect for the Greek flag right there. Belly dancers drop by on most weekend nights, and the patio is perfect during the summer. Chef Anass Sentissi, who also happens to be an expert Middle Eastern percussionist, is something of an entrepreneur: He opened his second restaurant, the Moroccan don’t-call-it-fast-food stop Poccadio, in Broad Ripple last year. The consistently delightful, fiercely independent DeVoe has chosen what some may see as a surprising path – despite a strong following and lasting interest from major labels, she’s stuck with her own imprint, Rubin The Cat Records, which has helped raise thousands of dollars for different animal advocacy organizations. here are a lot of options in Indy when it comes to dancing. Broad Ripple clubs start buzzing around 11. Mass Ave’s smattering of LGBTQ clubs are open until the wee hours. Even rock-centric Fountain Square has regular options for fans of DJs and dancing. Or, you can party on South Meridian with Best of Indy DJ winner Matt Allen. “I was introduced to the electronic music scene well over a decade ago,” Allen says. “I was fortunate enough to be a regional artist representative for a national label where I became exposed to its excitement both locally and all over the Midwest.” When he returned home to Indianapolis (the label now defunct), Allen brought that excitement back to the clubs, where he began performing regularly. After a residency at Broad Ripple club Tru, he relocated Downtown, bringing his remixheavy style with him. Allen doesn’t just bring music to the floor — he uses videos too, creating a full-fledged multi-sensory experience. A few examples of his music video mashups: Justice vs Simian vs MGMT (“We Are Your Kids Friends”); Fall Out Boy

vs Jung Joc ft. Queen (“Sugar Is Going Down”); Smashing Pumpkin vs Rihanna (“Rockstar Zero”). “As I began compiling content, I realized there was a market for such production and begin releasing tracks on remix sites such as beatfreakz and extremeremix and began selling remixes on a national level.” This was a success for Allen, who quickly moved on to bigger collaborations. “This led me to the involvement in several national collectives such as Remix

Network and 914 Hit Squad where we produce exclusive content for remix DJs around the globe.” Allen calls his style “Blend,” dedicated to his love of high-energy EDM remixes and samples. It’s not just the name of his Saturday night weekly party at 247 Sky Bar — it’s a full fledged brand. And although his mixes have an international audience, Allen is at home right here in Indianapolis. “Indianapolis has a lot of musical talent throughout every genre and [there’s] people working hard to keep music relevant here,” Allen says. “I hope to continue the success we have had with my brand as well as contributing effort to everyone keeping Indianapolis a place where music is important.” Allen makes a point of inviting regional and nationally touring remix artists to share the stage with him. He can’t announce any of those names yet, but they’re guaranteed to be good ones — Allen’s just got that kind of cred. They’re a perennial Best of Indy favorite (even though they now make their home in Nashville, Ind.). The Rev, Breezy and Bird Dog Bussell are currently cruising around Europe, but don’t worry — they’ll be back in Indy for the State Fair. In the meantime, you can grab their album Between The Ditches, released last year. bigdamnband.com 2nd: Cara Jean Marcy 3rd: The Cousin Brothers LOCAL PUNK/HARDCORE ARTIST/GROUP GAY BLACK REPUBLICAN They were your favorite in 2011 and 2012, and now they’re back on top for 2013. Gay Black Republican may not contain any actual, homosexual African-Americans of a conservative persuasion, but they’re one of Indy’s favorite punk bands. They’re an occasional fixture at the Mel’s Punk Rock Night, as they should be (PRN curator Rich Barker’s in the band.) Rusty’s mostly a solo player these days, and he’s going by a new moniker: The Tinkerer. He performs both contemporary and straight-ahead jazz, playing

But the Ambassadors continue on, with co-founding member Steve Robbins as bandleader now. Davis and his Blues Ambassadors placed in the top three of this category more than 15 times, winning the number one spot four times. Consistently hosting some of the best and brightest local artists and a heavy rotation of up-and-coming and already arrived regional and national artists, Radio Radio is one the best places to see a show in town.
