shopping guide PUBLISHER: Kevin McKinney (kmckinney@nuvo.net) EDITOR: Jim Poyser (jpoyser@nuvo.net) EDITORIAL CONTRIBUTORS: Jennifer Troemner

It’s that time of year where the entire machine of our economy relies upon us being cajoled into injecting revenue into the system via the holiday gift-giving season. Ergo, don’t rage against the machine, but oil and grease the monster by buying local. That’s what we do. And that’s what we are: locally owned and operated since 1990 (i.e. our inception). So, delight in our format of a more visual display of gifts, and check out the information for these shops who were kind enough to lend us their wares for a couple of days.

GO & GROOVE … Best Chocolate in Town Wasabi ginger truffles? A tower of bon bons, caramels, English toffee and pecan turtles? Can it get any better? It can. White chocolate and raspberry popcorn and gourmet trail mix round out the offerings at this 12-year-old candy store on Mass Ave. Owner Elizabeth Garber parlays her fine-arts background into designing chocolates fit for Indy’s finest restaurants and jazz clubs, and her beautiful, edible art also benefits breast cancer research and helps in the fight against Lupus, so you’re sharing the love and giving back. It’s a delicious, unforgettable gift that’s all made fresh right in the heart of Indy’s art district. 880 Massachusetts Ave., 6362800, bestchocolateintown.com Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care Not all eye care centers are created equal. Dr. Tavel has been family owned and doctor-run since 1940, and that means it holds itself to a higher standard than most. The professional staff is as concerned about protecting vision as correcting it, and they know their stuff. When it comes to looking good, the staff can give excellent recommendations about which frames best suit the shape of your face, which are the most fashionable, and which best align with your personal hobbies. Currently there are 20 locations across central Indiana, so you’re sure to find one close by. drtavel.com Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Salon Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a favorite salon of musicians and other celebrities who visit Indy, and for good reason. It’s a place where punk rock meets hair fashion, where you go when you want to leave looking and feeling your best. Continuing education is a must for the stylists and apprentices, so you know your cut will be up-to-date with the latest styles and techniques. Looking for a local place to buy your cosmetics? Klipsch has also taken strides to make their products and production plants less harmful to the environment.Klipsch is a homegrown audio company that’s been in Indianapolis since 1989 -- and in early 2011, our largest outdoor venue (formerly Verizon Wireless / Deer Creek) was renamed after the founders klipsch.com. LUNA music Voted the city’s best source for music by NUVO readers the past handful of years, LUNA Music’s great location, groovy staff, outstanding selection and eclectic in-store programming seem to be the secret. Indy’s homegrown music store is located in SoBro, near where you likely hang out anyway, teeming with a large selection of new and old vinyl as well as CDs. A great source for discovering local music, as well as sporting a healthy dose of books and assorted rock memorabilia, LUNA is everything a great record store should be. 5202 N. College Ave., 283-5862, lunamusic.net Salon Du Jour Salon Du Jour isn’t one of those places too busy to get to know you. It’s a small, privately owned salon on the Northside, and a perfect place to feel comfortable. But don’t let the size of the shop fool you. Salon Du Jour has a huge variety of stylists to cover all the hairrelated bases. Among them are stylists who specialize in cutting curly hair, which is a relative rarity in the industry. 6935 Lake Plaza Dr., 596-0508 Silver in the City See Page 22 for listing. Sun King Breweries Sun King is one of the best-known and loved local breweries in Central Indiana, and NUVO readers know that, because Sun King is consistently anointed “Best” locally made beer. Creations like Osiris Pale Ale, which is dry-hopped toward the end of fermentation to capture the lovely floral aroma and flavor, Sunlight Cream Ale and Wee Mac Scottish Ale (four-pack cans $10-

11, growlers $4, $6.50 fill) put Sun King on the map — and keeps them there. If you need a gift for a +21 friend, consider a growler of beer or a selection of beer swag. 135 N. College Ave., 602-3702, sunkingbrewing.com Vardegan What does ‘Vardegan’ mean? It’s Swedish for ‘everyday.’ What does Vardegan do? Sell you handprinted shirts, tanks and hoodies with unique designs. Everything is made with the most eco-friendly processes and materials they can get their hands on, like organic cotton, waterbased ink and soy-based chemicals. 8684 E. 116th St., shop.vardagen.com Vital Skates “We know derby because we do derby” is the slogan at Vital Skates, and we can guess why. Vital Skates caters to all levels of skaters, but their major focus is on roller derby. They sell boots, plates, whole skates, along with pads, laces, shirts and Anti-Stank. And that’s just the

GO & BIKE … Bikes on Mass Ave Connected to the Cultural Trail, Mass Ave strives to be bicycle friendly — and what better way than to have its very own, relatively new, bike shop. The knowledgeable staff will work with you to find the perfect bike or to fix and upgrade the unit you have into the best bike it can be. They also stock tons of accessories for the bicycle enthusiast. 643 Massachusetts Ave., 622-7988, bikesonmassave. myshopify.com Global Gifts Partnering with more than 35 developing nations worldwide, Global Gifts brings Indy a mix of art and culture in the form of beautiful and affordable jewelry, home items, textiles, pottery and decorative art. Revenue from the fair trade store goes to help struggling artisans not only achieve a higher quality of life but also to reach a market that would otherwise be unavailable. 1468 W. 86th St., 879-9090 446 Massachusetts Ave., 423-3148, globalgiftsindy.com Homespun We recently heard someone describe this delightful store as a brick and mortar Etsy, and we couldn’t have said it better. Here’s where you will find some of the most inspiring and original arts and crafts made locally in one of the city’s finest neighborhoods. From jewelry to soaps, T-shirts to tea pots, as well as a revolving stock of clothing, this Irvington shop makes some of the coolest handmade items available

in a convenient retail setting. Stop by and see shopkeeper Amanda Taflinger to learn more or do the bulk of your shopping. We wager you’ll be back many times. 5624 E. Washington St., 3510280, homespunindy.com Indy Reads Books When Indy Reads Books opened its doors in July, 2012, it saved downtown Indy from a dreary, bookstore-less existence. The inventory is donation-based and rotates quickly, so you’ll always find something new and interesting, usually for less than $10. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, or you’re hoping for something brand new, the mostly-volunteer staff can order it for you straight from the publishers. Added bonus: all the profits from IRB support Indy Reads, to promote literacy and provide tutoring for their 1,500 adult students. 911 Massachusetts Ave., 384-1496, indyreadsbooks.org Joe’s Cycles A neighborhood bike shop in the heart of Fountain Square, Joe’s specializes in helping you build a custom bike to suit your individual needs. The cozy space features bikes for sale, and provides helpful and affordable repairs and maintenance. An avid cyclist himself, Joe knows how to service the needs of a full range of customers — from the pros to beginners. A great neighbor, no matter where you live. 1060 Virginia Ave., 602-3911, joescycles.com

Mass Ave Knit Shop With what must be the best selection of fibers in town (including cashmere, silk and angora; as well as natural, organic and hemp), Mass Ave Knit Shop gives even the most timid knitter numerous options. In addition to the great merchandise, a variety of classes in knitting, crocheting and even lace-making are also held regularly. Stop in to browse or scout out your hangout. We guarantee you’ll be back, needles in hand. 862 Virginia Ave., 638-1833, massaveknitshoponline.com National Moto National Moto+Cycle Co. draws inspiration as well as its name from the Indy-based National Motor & Vehicle Company (1900-1924). If you like bicycles and motorcycles, why not combine the best of both worlds? And if you want “an optional 48cc 2-stroke EPA engine racing up to 30 mph averaging 130+ mpg” getting you where you want to go, you gotta check out their small but bodacious showroom. These motorized boardtrack-style bicycles come with their own line of custom Moto Gear. 5206 N. College Ave., 698-2418, nationalmoto.com Pax4U When you’re out shopping, biking or doing whatever it is you do, the last thing you need is to have one hand tied up holding your purse. Pax4U bags sit comfortably on the hip or slung across the shoulder like a messenger bag, which leaves your hands free — while the earthfriendly history of the bag scrubs your conscience clean. Each bag is made of organic cotton or recycled leather and suede, along with repurposed seat belt straps. Almost all of the material

is locally sourced and manufactured before it’s sold in local shops throughout Carmel and Indianapolis. 1-888-MyPax4u, pax4u.com People for Urban Progress Years ago, when the RCA Dome was demolished, the work of People for Urban Progress was just getting started. These master repurpose-ers saved 13 acres of the dome material to use as shade structures in Indy’s parks and to make a bunch of kick-ass bags, wallets and purses. And watch what they’re doing with salvaged seats from Bush Stadium! (Hint, keep an eye on IndyGo bus stops.) PUP also advocates for stronger public transportation and good urban design to help Indianapolis become more sustainable, and is working to get a car-sharing program up and running to make not owning a car in Indy more possible. 1043 Virginia Ave., peopleup.org Stouts Stouts opened the doors of its Mass Ave location in 1886, and has been furnishing Hoosier feet ever since. It’s a great place to shop for someone with a sense of style and hard-to-find shoe sizes. They carry hundreds of styles — including those ultra-weird yet ultra-comfy toe shoes. GO & STUDY … Bungalow Stylistically, The Bungalow is fullto-bursting with creative new takes on housewares, kitchen accessories and furniture. As a combined art gallery and housewares shop, you’ll find nothing inside these doors that couldn’t be classified as either classy or quirky. Check out old records that have been recycled into clocks, jewelry crafted by local artists, intricately decorated candles and so much more. 924 E. Westfield Blvd., 2535028, facebook.com/pages/ The-Bungalow-Inc

Chelsea’s Located in a Broad Ripple historic brick building built in 1877, Chelsea’s is a great place to buy a gift for pretty much anybody. Easily recognized by the collection of sun catchers glinting in the windows, find anything from home décor items like whimsical clocks to an eclectic blend of jewelry for both women and men. Unique stationery, mugs, pens, keepsake boxes or even a random bird statue may strike your fancy. No matter what, there’s always something to see. 902 E. Westfield Blvd., 251-0600

Chatham Home Funky-cool home furnishings, artistic home accessories and a selection of artwork fill this Mass Ave-area relative newcomer. It’s best to follow these guys on Facebook and/or Twitter as business hours tend to fluctuate based on who’s running the store or trips to market. But you’ll be treated with images of new merchandise and announcements of “secret” sales, so keep up. If you’re looking for lighted willow branches, heavy votive holders in jewel tones or custom fabrics, this is the place. They also have beautiful recoveredwood items, large stained glass pieces and art photography among their wares. Seriously chic items in a gorgeous space. 517 E. Global Gifts See Page 12 for listing. Haye’s and Taylor Haye’s and Taylor combines sports, chic and comfort with an old-school flair. This company takes pride in its shirts and hoodies — and in the Indiana vibe that runs through every stitch. The shirts are made with soft, vintagestyle materials for optimum look and comfort. All the designs are inspired by the sports and culture of our Hoosier homeland. If football isn’t your thing, check out the craft beer drinker shirt or the truly epic Monument Circle design. hayesandtaylor.com Indiana Ice They skate fast, they check hard, they fight tough — what more can you ask? When it comes to sports, you can’t match the white-knuckled intensity,

hardboiled action and fierce competition of a live hockey game. The Ice skated the rink of the Pepsi Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for years, but recently moved downtown to Bankers Life Fieldhouse. After consecutively finishing 3rd or 4th in their division since 2005, the Ice won the Clark Cup Championships in 2009 and has been competitive ever since. indianaice.com Indy Swank Anchoring retail in Fountain Square, IndySwank is a vibrant space specializing in vintage women’s fashion. Each piece here is carefully selected for style, condition and funkyness. While not over the top, a lot of items here take a commitment to an overall fashion theme — most likely one rooted in the 1950s or 60s. In addition to great dresses, coats and skirts, hats are well represented here, as are fabulous handbags from several eras. And while the emphasis is on retro, there are new items (including jewelry and accessories) in the store made by local designers and artists. Just in!: IndySwank will have a holiday shop at Circle Center Mall through Jan. 30. Items include vintage-inspired new clothing along with locally made accessories and artwork. 1043 Virginia Ave., 632-6440; Third floor, Circle Center Mall, 423-3096, indyswank.com Lick Lick is unconventional, to put it mildly. Flavors like Chocolate Honey Goat Cheese, Balsamic Strawberry and Gingersnap Lemon Curd might sound a bit odd, but keep an open mind and give it a try. One taste will make a believer out of you. You

can find Lick ice cream at the Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market and served at MacNiven’s Restaurant and Bar. 979-0237, facebook.com/ LickIceCreamIndy, lickicecream.tumblr.com Roberts Camera Roberts has come a long way since it opened its doors in 1957; today the famous camera shop sends top-ofthe-line cameras all over the country. And if you’re not camera savvy, there are even lessons to help you get started or improve your technique. For the cash-strapped or collectors, check out the used camera division, which restores and resells cameras and parts. Helpful, knowledgeable staff makes the visit complete. GO & GREEN … FACE This holiday season, give a new home to a dog or cat. The FACE Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic isn’t a shelter, meaning it doesn’t take animals from the public, but it does house a number of rescued dogs and cats that need a loving place to live. The FACE clinic was established in 1999, and has since helped cut the number of Indiana dogs and cats that die in kill shelters by two thirds. Meet your new best friend here, get your pet fixed or vaccinated or just give a donation to a great cause. 1505 Massachusetts Ave., 638-3223, facespayneuter.org Good Earth Located just north of the Broad Ripple Canal, Good Earth has been one of the city’s best (and often, only) options for buying natural, organic and otherwise green products since opening its doors in 1971. Family-run and neighborhoodfriendly, the store has a wide range of food and health & wellness items. It is also a good source of gifts

with natural body care, cosmetic and clothing selections. Just as important, the staff is committed to providing helpful, often educational, information to help shoppers make the best selection. 6350 Guilford Ave., 253-3709, good-earth.com Green BEAN Delivery There’s no need to lug all your groceries home from the store; Green BEAN delivers fresh local and organic produce straight to your door, along with locally sourced meats, dairy, eggs and more. Sign up online, pick out a package and schedule that’s right for your household, and then customize what’s sent to you every week. There are about 40 seasonal fruits and veggies to choose from each week, so you can choose your family’s favorites. Green BEAN is now serving the greater Indianapolis area, Muncie and Fort Wayne, along with Kentucky and Ohio. 377-0470, greenbeandelivery.com

Indiana Humanities In 1972, the National Endowment for the Humanities brought together five Hoosiers to help draw federal grants to local grassroots initiatives. That tradition continues today, with the added goal of encouraging, cultivating and inspiring humanities in Indiana. Among its numerous efforts is Novel Conversations, a free lending library which spans the state, and Chew on This, a program which uses food and drink to provoke community and conversation about a variety of topics. 1500 N. Delaware, 638-1500, indianahumanities.org Karma Records Replete with the rock and roll lifestyle products and music, with an emphasis on hip-hop, Karma ain’t your hippie mom and dad’s record store (though of course there’s nothing wrong with hippies). They keep a catalog of older recordings not found in the store, but the new Mix and Burn kiosk is leaving catalogs in its dust. Just click on over to mixandburn. com, create your own custom mix and drive to Karma to pick up your disc. Whole albums can be burned and come with CD insert. 3532 W. 86th St., 876-9603; 4895 Kentucky Ave., 876-9603; 21 North Post Road, 898-4344; 3802 North High School Road, 291-9243, facebook.com/ karmarecords.indianapolis The Loft Restaurant and Dairy Bar at Traders Point Creamery This eco-conscious eatery, located at Indiana’s only 100% grass-fed organic dairy farm, features a dairy bar with delicious ice cream selections made on-site. They are open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday for lunch, Tuesday through Saturday for dinner, and Sundays for brunch. All items are prepared with fresh, organic ingredients from Traders Point and other sustainable farms. Reservations recommended for brunch and groups of six or more. If you want, you can get yourself a tour of the farm — a real Indiana treat! 9101 Moore Road, 733-1700, tpforganics.com PACT Short for imPACT, PACT has a creative take on making a difference: change your undies, change the world. Super-comfy, organic cotton underwear isn’t the only thing you’ll discover on their site. Look around and you’ll find shirts, socks and bottoms. Each sale helps fund charities to

provide people around the world with sustainable food, clean water and affordable housing, And your new underwear will be clean in more ways than one: made with organic yarns, green manufacturing processes and nestled in environmentally friendly packaging, you’ll be feeling fine in your spiffiest pair of briefs. wearpact.com The Turntable Shoppe Even if you aren’t circa-1980s disc jockey or an owner of an old vinyl collection you’re dying to play, you’ll dig this store. Need to convert your old vinyl to digital MP3s? Love antique musical devices? This is the place. Vintage turntables can be repaired or purchased here, with a focus on machines made from the 1950s-90s. They can even specialorder needles and styli if that’s what you’re into. In addition to new releases every week (usually Tuesday), they’ve got an extensive used vinyl section that is browse-worthy; go forth and unearth a gem! If you’re feeling lucky, dig around in the $4.99 bin. And don’t miss a selection of T-shirts meant to fully complement that PBR you are frequently holding. 1051 E. 54th St., 726-0927, facebook.com/pages/ VIBES-MUSIC Village Experience A two-part approach to cultural education and empowerment, sisters Anne and Kelly Campbell use their store in Broad Ripple as a venue for micro-financing groups, women’s projects, local artisans and global cooperatives to develop fair trade products. The shop features handcrafted pieces in a variety of prices. We fell in love with knit scarves, gloves and hats from Kenya, and the line of colorful handmade aprons. The best gift the sisters offer, however, is a series of eco-tours in developing parts of the world meant to give travelers an off-the-beatenpath, true village experience. 6055 N.
