BEST OF 2011 Welcome to the annual poll of NUVO readers we call the Best of Indy. As we have for more than 20 years, we set about asking all of you to vote for your favorites in the locals arts, entertainment, media, music, nightlife, food, drink and shopping. Admittedly, that’s a whole lot of questions. But we got a whole lot of answers. More than 15,000 men, women, children and, perhaps, pets with valid email addresses, cast their online votes during the month of May in more than 100 categories. Once again, we’ve continued our efforts to keep the NUVO Best of Indy contest focused on local people, places and things. While many, many, MANY votes were cast for corporate, national, international and/or chain businesses—we didn’t count them. As we stated in the rules on the voting site, only votes for locals count.

This isn’t an easy rule to enforce, and we understand some people don’t like it. But our logic is simple: The Best of Indy contest and issue our devoted to shining a light on what is outstanding and unique to our city, neighborhoods and neighbors. We mean no disrespect or disparagement, we simply want to keep the focus on the Best of Indy – meaning locally owned and operated businesses and we will continue to ask you to vote for local choices only again next year. Congratulations to all the winners!

ndianapolis has always been home to thriving arts communities — from the artists who first settled Irvington and the ongoing legacy of Herron School of Art and Design, to the legendary years of studios at the Ferris Building to the now thriving Murphy Arts Center in Fountain Square, our city continues a tradition of interesting, innovative and imaginative arts and entertainment options. NUVO readers respond to these options in a variety of ways and with varying amounts of veracity. When it comes to naming favorites, however, you are seldom shy. There are few new names among the winners in the A & E categories for 2011. But those being honored have earned recognition for consistently finding ways to keep audiences interested and engaged. Traditional arts groups like the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Repertory Theatre are staples in the community and win their respective categories nearly ever year, thanks to

innovative and original programming that never fails to incorporate the best of local talent. Other aspects of local color that made your Best of Indy winners list in 2011 included repeat appearances by Butler Men’s Basketball , the Humane Society’s annual Mutt Strut fundraiser, and Robert Indiana’s iconic ‘Love’ sculpture at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. And while WTHR continues to trounce the competition in terms of local television, WFYI makes its first appearance as a winner for Best Local Radio. All in all, there is no shortage of things to go and do in this fine city of ours. Here are the ones thousands of NUVO readers chose as the Best in Indy. Want more? We keep an up-to-date calendar of A+E events at www.nuvo.net, and publish a NUVO CityGuide focused exclusively on Arts each September. In the meantime, peruse these award-winners and start planning your next arts venture now!

(Best) Performing Arts Group: Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is a frequent winner in this category, and for good reason. In addition to traditional performances and musical selections, the ISO keeps it interesting with an impressive list of guest performers ranging from Liza Minnelli to Pink Martini, plus the occasional ‘80s icon å la Christopher Cross. Most impressive, however, is the hiring of young conductor Krzysztof Urbanski who arrives with much fanfare at the start of the upcoming arts season in September. The preview performances led by Urbanksi earlier this year show great things to come for the ISO, and, undoubtedly, more first place wins in this category. www.indianapolissymphony.org, Hilbert Circle Theatre box office, 45 Monument Circle, 639-4300. 2nd: Children’s Choir 3rd: Dance Kaleidoscope (Best) Theater: Indianapolis Repertory Theatre The Indianapolis Repertory Theatre continues to surprise new and long-time theater-goers in town with a reliable mix of debuting and traditional works such as last fall’s Gospel According to James , Holes and The Diary of Anne Frank . There is never a shortage of good works here on the city’s oldest stage, just as in all those award-winning years past. Kudos to the IRT for mixing traditional (bankable) productions along with more contemporary – not to mention staging the work of local

The transformed historic automobile factory now houses the studios of many artists, most of whom take part in the annual Stutz Open House Gallery Tour and show their work in the cornerstone Stutz Art Space in exhibits throughout the year.In addition to gallery shows, members of the Stutz Artists Association (which includes more than 70 local artists) also offer a rotating roster of classes in various mediums for adults and children. www.stutzartists.com, 212 W. 10th St., B100, 503-6420. 2nd: Big Car 3rd: Harrison Center for the Arts (Best) Museum: Children’s Museum Children’s Museum of Indianapolis appeals to kids of all ages, which explains why its won this award more than any other cultural institution over the past two decades. Only the IMA has taken the top honor in other years. Consider the recent rotating exhibits ranging from Rock and Roll cars and guitars to the current National Geographic Treasures from around the world, as well as educational programming honoring

(Best) Film Festival: Heartland Seems Heartland has a lock on this category that just might be unbreakable. While thes city hosts a variety of excellent film festivals throughout the year, Heartland is the 10-time and undefeated winner in the category. Focused on films with positive themes of human spirit and triumph, Heartland has been steadily growing since 1991 and now attracts filmmakers like Rob Reiner to serve as a vehicle for movie premiers. Look for this year’s festival in October with screenings at venues throughout the Indianapolis area. www.heartlandfilmfestival.org, 200 S. the season that makes the list as your favorite most often. Each May, the Broad Ripple Art Fair signals the return of good weather, great community events, and a wide-range of arts opportunities. Taking over the grounds of the beautiful Indianapolis Art Center, with lots of local music, food and beer vendors rounding-out the artists’ booths, this longtime festival has more than earned its “best” designation. www.indplsartcenter.org, 820 E. 67th St., 255-2464. 2nd: Rib Fest 3rd: Penrod (Best) Comedy Venue: Crackers A mainstay in the city, Crackers has been voted Indy’s best comedy choice in the NUVO reader’s poll 19 out of the 20 times we’ve posed the question. While a handful of competing comedy clubs have come and gone and come again, Crackers has maintained great comedy at both the Broad Ripple and Downtown locations. Headlining national comics, as well as a decent open mic with funny locals, mean you are nearly guaranteed an evening of good laughs; affordable admission and bar prices mean you are guaranteed to not feel rippedoff. www.crackerscomedy.com, 247 S. The area now known as ‘Broad Ripple Village’ was founded in 1836 by Jacob Coil.

(Best) Neighborhood/Cultural District: Broad Ripple While the city has no shortage of great neighborhoods or designated cultural districts, none come close to beating Broad Ripple for NUVO readers. As the Midtown districts grows around it, this small village maintains its reputation as a hub for those seeking the best Indy has to offer — much has it has for the last hundred years.. Oh sure, it can rowdy at times, but the village is full of Best of Indy winners and there’s no better Indianapolis neighborhood to sample local music, dine at local restaurants, shop at local retail stores or enjoy an excellent local microbrew. www.discoverbroadripplevillage.com. 2nd: Mass Ave 3rd: Fountain Square (Best) Public art installation: LOVE (Robert Indiana) We’ve asked this question five times over the past twenty years, and each time you give us the same answer. The iconic “LOVE” sculpture by Robert Indiana on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The 1970 installation was one of the artist’s first reproductions of this steel pop art icon. Others can be found in New York City, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Bangkok and Bilbao (while Israel and Italy boast translated versions). Our “LOVE” may not be unique, but our claim to Indiana is: He’s an Indy native and graduate of Arsenal Technical High School. 2nd: “Anne Dancing” (Julian Opie), Mass Ave Cultural District 3rd: “The Ruins” (Taflinger & Bitter), Holliday Park (Best) Public Park: White River State Park While ten-time winner Eagle Creek Park still holds the record for most wins in this category, White River State Park seem to be establishing itself as the one to beat with a third consecutive win. Over the past decade, this urban oasis has evolved into a true cultural destination and offers grassy plains, walking trails and waterways as well as some of the city’s best cultural attractions including the Indianapolis Zoo, NCAA Hall of Fame, White River

Top-notch faculty, quality liberal arts-based degree programs, a beautiful campus and active student body, this small private college is one of the city’s oldest and most respected. We might be a little partial to this readers’ favorite, however, given the large number of Butler alum who just happen to work for NUVO. www.butler.edu. 2nd: IUPUI 3rd: Marian University (Best) Best place to volunteer: Big Brothers Big Sisters Dedicated to growing the next generation of caring, competent, and confident adults, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana develops mentors committed providing positive role modes to Indianapolis youth. With a one-to-one mentoring program built upon nationally recognized research and practices that honor and value the wide range of developmental needs of boys and girls as well as the diversity of their communities, Central Indiana Big Brothers Big Sisters is always in need of volunteers. A day long event, with vendors, celebrities and all sorts of family-friendly activities, Mutt Strut raises much needed funds for the shelter and engages hundreds of volunteers. Now there is no denying how integral and valuable they are—as demonstrated by this year’s eighth straight win as the favorite pro sports team of NUVO readers. With two trips to the Super Bowl in the past five years, including one amazing victory in 2010—we understand why it’s easy to be on board the Blue Crew bandwagon and support Peyton Manning and the rest of the team for their efforts on the field and in the community. www.colts.com. 2nd: Indianapolis Fever 3rd: Indianapolis Indians

(Best) Sports team (College): Butler Mens Basketball For two consecutive years, the Butler Bulldogs’ have taken the city, if not a good part of the country, to the edge of victory and the depths of despair over the NCAA basketball finals. Each was a classic David vs. Goliath struggle, with David just one failed shot away from victory. arts, entertainment & media (Best) Radio Personalities: Bob and Tom (WFBQ) We hate to call them old-timers, but heck, they’ve been on Q95 since before a good number of you were even born. Maybe that’s why NUVO readers continue to vote them as their favorites, even after being absent from the top for a few years while Dave Smiley of WZPL reigned king of drivetime laughs. Last year they missed the top by a mere three votes but return to first place again this year for an 11th (and decisive) victory. Welcome back, gentlemen. (Best) Blog/Web site: MOKB We’re big fans of My Old Kentucky Blog, so much so that we gave Dodge and his crew a NUVO Cultural Vision Award a few years back for their local music efforts. More than a blog, MOKB writes, films, produces, promotes and supports music in Indianapolis under the guise of MOKB, MOKB Presents and Laundromatinee, and they do it better than anyone else. Or so say hordes of NUVO readers who once again voted MOKB best local web site extraordinaire. www. myoldkentuckyblog.com. 2nd: INDYCOG 3rd: Hoosier Beer Geek

(Best) Weather forecaster: Angela Buchman (WISH) Once again, we have to ask—Really? You all are watching WTHR for the news, sports and traffic but switching to WISH for the weather? Apparently so, because Angela Buchman has won the Best Weather Forecaster award for the fifth time in eight years and she’s the only winner in the local television categories who doesn’t work at the NBC affiliate. (Best) Television station: WTHR 13 Winning ten of the past eleven years, WTHR is the local NBC affiliate in Indy and the clear favorite for NUVO readers in the local news department. The on-going recognition as the best in local tv comes, in large part, from the station’s emphasis on solid journalism that rarely relies on sensationalism in place of facts. The talent pool is crowded at WTHR and you’ll see a host of WTHR news, sports and weather personalities win again this year in their respective categories. www.wthr.com, 1000 N. (Best) News anchor: Andrea Morehead This is the sixth win for WTHR news anchor Andrea Morehead, in a category that Indianapolis’ most iconic newsman Mike Ahern once dominated. Since his retirement, it’s been Morehead who has consistently earned viewers’ loyalty as the most trusted source for news. In addition to her anchoring duties for the evening news every week night, Morehead produces Women You Should Know, a program that tells the story of women who have made an impact on Indianapolis and other cities throughout the world. www.wthr.com, 1000 N. (Best) Traffic reporter: Mimi Pearce Mimi Pearce rides the WTHR Best of Indy winner’s wave to victory of her own and a first place win for best traffic reporter. Perhaps it’s her snazzy jackets or the breezy toss back to weatherman Chuck Lofton in those updates during the Today Show, Pearce has an unflappable steadfastness to her smile and reporting no matter what the traffic conditions. She’s a reliable source for knowing where the backups, fender benders construction zones are hampering maximum drive-time efficiency from sunrise until you’re safely at your desk. www.wthr.com, 1000 N. (Best) Sports reporter: Dave Calabro Dave Calabro wins with a 14th consecutive victory in the Best of Indy Reader’s Poll. Could there be a more recognizable sportscaster in this town? We think not, and apparently you don’t either. When he’s not on set, Calabro is reporting live from local, national and international sporting events with an Indy angle. He involves himself in the Indy sports community on a firsthand basis, making his recognition about both familiarity and honor for his commitment. www.wthr. com, 1000 N. e’re a bit partial to the locally owned and operated businesses that populate our neighborhoods. Which is why we are so grateful when NUVO readers show such strong support for the mom-and-pop shops that make our city great. Sure, there aren’t a lot of local options in some categories. But we are increasingly glad to so see so many businesses try and make local count. And what’s not to like about local stuff when it is as good as Sun King beer, Flying Cupcakes, and McNamara flowers? Once again, these specialty shops are winning votes faster than we can count ‘em. And speaking of winners, could Silver in the City be any awesomer? Clearly not, since it once again wins handily—as do friends and favorites Luna Music and Big Hat Books.

Times are tough all over, which explains why vintage shopping made the top of the list again. A whole lot of NUVO peeps are buying there clothes at Broad Ripple Vintage these days, which makes perfect fashion and economic sense to us. Services are well represented in these categories, too. Congrats to The Vault for returning to first place as Best Hair Salon, City Yoga for toppling Invoke from the podium, and Butler Toyota Scion for a repeat win. The Broad Ripple Farmers’ Market runs from now until Nov.19 at Broad Ripple High School. (Best) Source for Locally Grown: Broad Ripple Farmers’ Market Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market gets better each summer, which is probably why it continues to be the most popular source for locally grown products and produce. Featuring nearly 50 local vendors, products vary weekly, but farm fresh, often organic, fruits, vegetables and flowers are available from spring until fall, as well as a selection of meat and dairy items. When the weather’s good and the hangover’s mild, this is Broad Ripple at its best—with plenty of great food, live music and lively locals. Check web site for complete schedule. (Best) Hair Salon: The Vault Undoubtedly the coolest business in Beech Grove, The Vault is the best hair salon in all of Indy according to NUVO readers, once again. And by hair salon we mean a place to get your ‘do done before or after browsing for vintage clothes, jewelry and accessories. The vintage décor isn’t just trendy, it’s authentic to the 100+ year old building. And the stylists aren’t simply trendy either. This is the place to come for style and substance, even (and especially) when it’s a little but funky. www.thevaulthairandvintage. com, 700 Main St., Beech Grove, 784-4000. 2nd: Snips 3rd: Geneva Hair Studio

Get your growler refilled every Friday at the Sun King tasting room for only $5.

(Best) Yoga/Pilates Studio: CityYoga It may not seem like a big deal to you, but when we discovered CityYoga had knocked the undefeated Invoke from the winner’s circle and claimed top spot as Indy’s Best Yoga/Pilate Studio we were impressed. The new location at 24th and Central seems to be increasing the popularity, as well as spirituality and physicality of Midtown and downtown residents. While the standard classes in a variety of styles and traditions including Ashtanga, Vinyasa,

music & nightlife

Viniyoga and Restorative yoga, certainly contributed to the big win, we are certain the enthusiasm and support of the trainers and teachers contributed as well. www.cityoga. biz, 2442 Central Ave., 920-9642. 2nd: Invoke Yoga 3rd: Indy House of Pilates (Best) Health/Fitness Center: YMCA Jordan The proximity to Broad Ripple, affordable price, familyatmosphere, great schedule of classes and helpful staff continue to make Jordan YMCA a favorite option for those looking to keep fit. Classes are affordable and cater to members at all fitness levels and interests. With family programming, as well as great specials for membership, the Y remains a classic and reliable community center. It may not be as glamorous or singles-oriented as some of the other health clubs in town, but then that’s probably why it keeps winning this category. www.indymca.org, 8400 Westfield Blvd., 253-3206 2nd: NIFS 3rd: YMCA Athenaeum

arts, entertainment & media (Best) Music shopping: LUNA Music While some may have mourned the loss of the LUNA Music shop on Mass Ave, we think it’s made the flagship Midtown store even better. Like us, NUVO readers seem to be spending an awful lot of time flipping through the bins of used and new LPS, CDs and a host of groovy books, quirky gifts and t-shirts that quickly become collectors’ items. Why else would it win best music store six years running? Don’t miss the frequent all-ages in-store appearances by touring acts passing through Indy when the joint is typically packed to the gills with every hipster and his/her brother within a 50 mile radius. Even if you hate hipsters, come to LUNA for the groovy staff, outstanding selection and free bumper stickers. www. lunamusic.net, 5202 N. College Ave., 283-5862. 2nd: Indy CD & Vinyl 3rd: Karma

The nine professional artists include six tattoo artists who are eager to pair their creative energy with the desires of the customer to develop the ideal tattoo. Discreet, but not dingy, the strip mall locations and gag-gift façade take most of the stigma from shopping for items to please yourself, your partner or embarrass the hell out of a friend at a bacholette party. It’s also a great date night shopping stop, just in case you want to pick up a few treats that might go well with dessert. www. cirillas.com, 8601 Michigan Road, 228-9345 and 6971 W. (Best) Book shopping: Big Hat Books Big Hat is going to need an awfully big trophy case. This is the sixth consecutive win as Best Local Book Store for Liz Barden and her cozy little shop in Broad Ripple. With a stock so carefully selected, it’s easy to spend a good deal of time perusing the shelves or mining the staff’s informed opinions for a good read. But it’s not just books that make Big Hat a winner. Which, quite frankly, makes it hard to come up with new superlatives to describe why it is undisputedly the best flower shop in Indianapolis. This is the seventh consecutive win in the category for the store that shows no sign of letting the competition catch-up. Maybe it’s the great Mass Ave location, or the amazing selection of beautiful, quirky, eco-friendly, artistic, original and (mostly) affordable items you can’t wait to buy yourself, those you love, and/or editors of your favorite local alt-weekly lining the selves of the shop that makes us all swoon. (Best) Men’s Fashion shopping: Broad Ripple Vintage Not sure what that says about men in this town, but it does say that Broad Ripple Vintage remains a staple in the Indy fashion scene. Where else can you or your guy find all the necessary items for his wardrobe while remaining fashionable and frugal? More than a secondhand store, BR Vintage selects quality and quirky items that appeal to just about anyone with an affinity for previously worn items — particularly those with a funky vibe or post-modern irony. Broad Ripple Vintage specializes in vintage clothing and accessories from the 1940s to the 1980s.

(Best) Vintage/Consignment shopping: Broad Ripple Vintage It’s the tenth consecutive win for Broad Ripple Vintage, and it doesn’t look as if the title is in danger of changing hands for a while. The perpetual Doors soundtrack, classic rock concert posters, paisley print and that faint musty smell inside of Broad Ripple Vintage gives you the feeling that you’re not just shopping for threads from the past, but that you have actually travelled back in time to the era of flower children and bell bottoms. With an ever-changing selection, it’s the perfect place to

score a retro-inspired look, find unique accessories or assemble a last minute Halloween costume. Just be sure that you have an ample amount of time -- scouring the racks of clothing could easily take up an entire afternoon. www.broadripplevintage.com, 824 E. 64th St., 255-4135 2nd: Rag-o-rama 3rd: Plato’s Closet (Best) Antique shopping: Midland Antique Mall Eight wins for Midland Antiques Mall stretching all the way back to the mid-90s

as Best Local Antique Shop. Midland’s size, however, means “shop” in this case is actually a 40,000 sq ft historic paradise for anyone with an eye for style, whether it be artsy and modern or chic and retro. More than 125 dealers boast furniture, china, glassware, paintings and more from both yesterday and today. It’s best not to be in a rush here; the best items are often a bit obscured at a glance. www. midlandathome.com, 907 E. Everyone’s favorite, Rev. Payton, wthout his Big Damn Band.

MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE

T

he most popular of all the Best of Indy categories each year, 2011 saw an unprecedented number of NUVO readers vote for music and nightlife favorites. Case in point, Rev. Peyton and his Big Damn Band are back as twotime winners, being named Best Roots Artist/Group and the Best Artist/Group in all genres. Wouldn’t be a Best of Indy contest without the Mudkids, which is why they once again take home the most votes for favorite Hip-hop artists. Welcome back to the winner’s circle Devil to Pay and Stereo Deluxe, as well. Kudos to roots artist Cara Jean Wahlers, however, who generated one of the most successful write-in campaigns in BOI history and made her way to second place just behind the reverend in both of those categories. Alley Cat, Talbott Street and Scotty’s Brewhouse were all mul-

tiple winners this year, as they quite often are. Good to see so many sub-cultures represented or, perhaps, overlapping. And NUVO readers once again weighed in on where to see their favorite local, regional and national acts perform. Radio Radio , The Vogue, and Murat Egyptian Room garner the most votes, but don’t overlook wins by Melody Inn , Mousetrap and the Slippery Noodle Inn for live music options also. Chatham Tap makes its first appearance as a Best of Indy winner this year, according to NUVO readers it’s the best place to check out mid-week. Other downtown winners this year include Blu, Living Room Lounge and Nicky Blaine’s. Stay current and informed by checking our Clubs + Bars listings at www.nuvo.net. And don’t miss the annual NUVO Nightlife CityGuide on stands and online next March.

The Max Allen Band opened for Santana and Steve Winwood this past summer.

(Best) Artist/Group: Rev. Peyton You are undoubtedly fond of Rev. Peyton and his Big Damn Band, the country blues outfit that made it cool to play a washboard again, if not to actually use one. Last year, the group was the toast of the Warped Tour, where young punks flocked to their trailer to hang out. They’ve taken it a bit easier in 2011, playing a more eclectic set of festivals, many of them in Canada (Calgary Folk Fest, Windsor Blues Fest, Ottawa Bluesfest 2011). www.bigdamnband.com. 2nd: Cara Jean Wahlers 3rd: Jennie DeVoe (Best) Rock Artist/Group: Stereo Deluxe A repeat win for Southside rock band Stereo Deluxe, who took a little time off to regroup earlier this year, returning this June with a updated sound and a twotrack digital single, “Evil Twins.” As we speak, the band is on a jaunt around the east, stopping by Pittsburgh, Brooklyn and Philadelphia. It’s all part of a process of reinvention for a band that’s been working at it since 1998, when the then high school-students began playing out. X-103 is into the new stuff; they added “Quarter-Century Man,” the B-side to “Evil Twins,” to their playlist earlier this year. www.stereodeluxemusic.com. 2nd: We Are Hex 3rd: Beta Male (Best) Roots Artist/Group: Rev. Peyton Peyton and the band went back to the source on their latest record, Peyton on Patton, a collection of songs made famous by country blues guitarist Charlie Patton. The record is more strippeddown than a traditional Big Damn Band recording, with drummer Aaron Persinger using a century-old tobacco barrel, and

36

was recorded in a single day on a single microphone, much like Patton laid down his recordings in the late ’20s and early ‘30s. To keep with the retro feel, a deluxe version is available with a bonus 78 record. www.bigdamnband.com. 2nd: Cara Jean Wahlers 3rd: The Cousin Bros. (Best) Punk Artist/Group Gay Black Republican Gay Black Republican wins best local punk band for the first time after placing second in last year’s voting. Not that they haven’t won awards in the pages of NUVO before, taking home a citation for most improved band way back in 2003, the same year that we called their Ballet on Barbed Wire a top ten local album. They’ve been doing the Dead Kennedysinspired thing since 2001, attacking this fair nation’s unchecked consumerism, war-mongering and magical thinking. And they’ve been Punk Rock Night regulars for a decade now — in fact, they’ll play this weekend’s edition. www. gayblackrepublican.com. 2nd: Stand and Deliver 3rd: Stealing Volume (Best) Metal Artist/Group Devil to Pay Not strictly a metal band, Devil to Pay stands at the intersection of Sabbathstyle metal, classic rock and postgrunge, with an attentiveness to melody and song structure that sets them apart from other riff-based bands. Not that you didn’t already know that — Devil to Pay is a regular winner in this category, and the band’s lead singer and vocalist, Steve Janiak, is pretty close to a rock star on the local scene. The somewhatrecent addition of Rob Hough on guitar has solidified the band’s lineup, and one wonders if we’ll hear a follow-up

best of indy guide // 2011 // NUVO // 100% RECYCLED PAPER

to 2009’s Heavily Ever After in the near future. www.deviltopay.net. 2nd: Xero Sum 3rd: Smoke Ring (Best) Hip-Hop Artist/Group: Mudkids It may have been a slow year for Mudkids, who have performed infrequently since they won this same category last year. But the same couldn’t be said for bandleader Rusty Redenbacher, who has worked up two albums in the meantime: Lazarus, his solo debut, and The Professor and the Hustler, a collaboration with local emcee Mr. Kinetik that saw Redenbacher playing the hustler. Redenbacher remains a fixture in local media as a VJ, columnist, Twitter fiend and, now, Tumblr addict. And he’s still a go-to guy for a guest spot, the guy to ask when you need a few verses for your project. www.themudkids.tumblr.com. 2nd: Oreo Jones 3rd: Andy D. (Best) Jazz Artist/Group: Rob Dixon Maybe the biggest news in the Rob Dixon world this year has been the release of a new album by jazz-funk band Headhunters, who signed last year with local label Owl Studios. Dixon joined the group when they joined Owl, and he co-produced the band’s new album, Platinum, recorded at the northside Static Shack studios and released in July. Of course, the tenor saxophonist still heads up his own jazz-funk band, Triology +1, which performs just about once a month at The Jazz Kitchen, Dixon’s longtime stomping ground (well, when he’s not playing the Chatterbox with his straightahead quartet). www.owlstudios.com. 2nd: Steve Allee 3rd: Cathy Morris

(Best) Blues Artist/Group: Max Allen Band This one’s a bit of a misnomer. A tremendously talented rock trio, the Max Allen Band can certainly play the blues, but, more often than not, they don’t. Allen, who started off his musical life as a blues prodigy styled after Stevie Ray Vaughan, has moved away from the electric blues in the past few years, expanding his palette to incorporate rock, jazz and jam influences. His band plays locally only six to eight time a year, but Allen can be seen on The Mousetrap stage just about every Wednesday, where he leads the free-wheeling open-stage Family Jam. www.maxallenmusic.com. 2nd: Gov. Davis 3rd: Gordon Bonham

(Best) DJ/Promoter: Slater Hogan Another win for Slater Hogan, who gives back as much as he takes from the scene — by hosting the long-time club night Keepin’ It Deep, promoting oneoff shows like this year’s electronic music megafest Identity Festival and putting out local talent on his label Musique Boutique. He’s, of course, still active as a DJ, one of our city’s vets, right up there with Indiana Jones in time served on local and international dance floors. And, as of late, he’s become a radio DJ, sharing time on WNOU with DJ Orion, Cool Hand Lex and the aforementioned Mr. Jones. www.facebook.com/ slater.hogan. 2nd: Indiana Jones 3rd: Jackola (Best) Live Music (Bar/Club): Radio Radio Radio Radio owner Tufty Clough has recently opened a new Fountain Square venue, the restaurant La Revolucion, but he’ll be hard-pressed to top his first club, the non-smoking, unostentatiously well-furnished, intelligently-booked, spacious but intimate Radio Radio. It’s one the best places to see a show in town, both because of the always-excellent mix orchestrated by Tufty and the attentive bar staff led by onetime Best of Indy winner Roni. The long-lived club is a big reason why Fountain Square remains a perennially cool part of town. www.futureshock. net, 1119 Prospect St., 955-0995. 2nd: Melody Inn 3rd: Rathskeller/Biergarten (Best) Karaoke: Living Room Lounge It’s a third win for the downtown Living Room Lounge as the city’s best place for karaoke. We confess to loving the neighborhood vibe of the place and good-natured approach to the

DJ Slater Hogan karaoke performances that feel a little less intimidating than other, more upscale, bars. Upon reflection, we’d like to add that an amazing pork tenderloin sandwich may or may not be the real appeal. Otherwise, it’s just your friends showing off their Pop Star skills while you sulk in the corner. 934 N. (Best) Jukebox: Alley Cat It’s a repeat win again this year and one of several times that everyone’s favorite Indianapolis dive bar has taken top honors for the best jukebox in the city. Not only is the selection of rock and roll classics great when you are plunking down the quarters, but you can almost always guarantee who ever is paying is playing great tunes as well. Whether you’re there to drink, shoot pool and/or size up the locals, the jukebox provides a quintessential and much-loved soundtrack for the majority of NUVO readers. 6267 Carrollton Ave., 257-4036. 2nd: Dorman Street 3rd: Melody Inn (Best) Billiards/Pool: Alley Cat Broad Ripple’s infamous Alley Cat wins here, as well – just like they have the last three years. It’s really the only thing to do in the place that won the Best Dive Bar award for ten consecutive years before we retired the category, other than drink and/or watch other drunk people play pool (while listening to the award-winning jukebox, of course). For many, however, the pool playing is merely a ruse meant to attract members of the opposite sex. Which is pretty successful apparently—Alley Cat has won Best Bar For Hooking Up more than once as well. 6267 Carrollton Ave., 257-4036. 2nd: Old Pro’s Table 3rd: Fox & Hound

(Best) place to people watch: Alley Cat And speaking of the Alley Cat, yes, they also won this award for a total of three Best of Indy first place wins this year. so. You can’t even get here without threading through Broad Ripple’s back alleys. Cheap drinks, good music and lots of pool playing, the Cat is the coolest of the multi winners this year and most others. within walking distance of Lucas Oil Stadium, Victory Field and Conseco Fieldhouse, Scotty’s also has a great crowd eager to root on the home team when tickets aren’t available or a bar is the preferred vantage point to take in all the action. Scotty’s Brewhouse

(Best) bar food: Scotty’s Brewhouse The motto at Scotty’s Brewhouse is “Good Food, Good Brew, Good People” and NUVO readers obviously agree with all of the above. Multiple wins in multiple categories over the past few years have established Scotty’s as a proven favorite. Having such a terrific menu and delicious food doesn’t hurt. All the typical appetizers, sandwiches and burgers are there, but the fresh ingredients, imaginative sauces and spices (lotsa hot stuff!) make these taste better than many local restaurants not hosting sports fans and running

(Best) place for drink specials: Scotty’s Brewhouse A third win in this category for Scotty’s Brewhouse, and for good reason. What’s better than a cold 24-ounce microbrew on a Monday? Easy, one you don’t have to shell out a ton of cash for. The specials aren’t limited to beer either; look for half priced bottles of wine and cheap youcalls throughout the week. The fact that Scotty is now brewing his own in the form of Thr3e Wise Men Brewing doesn’t hurt either. uffice it say, NUVO readers rarely venture out of their culinary comfort zones. If they do, it is seldom at the expense of their favorites. While pizza has been taken to an art form by a number of establishments new and old over the past year, Bazbeaux remains your number one choice for 20+ years. India Garden and Mama Carolla’s Old Italian are joined by Santorini Greek Kitchen and Siam Square in maintaining winning streaks, as is Saffron Café. We’re happy to see Calvin Fletcher’s Coffee Company join the winning ranks this year. Quite an honor for a place open just over two years to win your hearts that quickly. Sun King Brewing is another fairly new kid on the block that shows all the signs of holding on to their first place trophies for a good long time as well. And there’s Scotty’s Brewhouse with their multiple wins for the second straight year, also shaking things up a bit.

Over all, there are a lot of prices and flavors to explore. Geographically, Broad Ripple still dominates, but it’s good to see restaurants and bars all over the city earn your respect and votes. Eating out is a favorite pasttime for us at NUVO and for our readers. Thankfully, Indianapolis is home to some excellent local and independent dining options that make eating out affordable and delicious almost any day (or night) of the week. Boogie Burger moved to their new location on Broad Ripple Ave. this summer.

(Best) Deli/Sandwich Shop: Shapiro’s Delicatessen Shapiro’s has been the favorite deli of NUVO readers for at least 20 years, and won this category every single time we’ve taken your votes. According to the folks at Shapiro’s, they’ve only had a few simple goals since the place opened more than a century ago: “Cook good. Serve generously. Price modestly. People will come.” They might be on to something. The food is

delicious, the portions are huge, the prices are mostly modest and the place is always packed. You can dine in or carry out; but don’t miss the bakery items either way. Cheescake is much better for you than corned beef. www.shapiros.com, 808 S. Meridian St., 631-4041. 2nd: Goose the Market 3rd: Ripple Bagel Deli

(Best) Burgers: Boogie Burger Ask anyone in town, and they’ll tell you that Burger rocks, plain and simple. So it came to no surprise to us that NUVO readers voted it home to the Best Burger in Indy again this year. Broad Ripple’s little diningcar-of-a-restaurant-that-could does lots of things well. There’s a basic burger that rookies might want to start with, but don’t wait long to venture into the condiment options which are all dwarfed by the bacon, but still good. Veggies and vegans don’t dismay. The black bean and soy options at Boogie Burger are excellent. Don’t forget an order of garlic fries or onion rings. www.boogieburger.com, 1904 E. Broad Ripple Ave., 255-2540 2nd: Scotty’s Brewhouse 3rd: Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream (Best) Pizza: Bazbeaux And the award for the longest winning streak of NUVO Best of Indy awards in our 20-year history goes to…Bazbeaux Pizza. One of only two questions we’ve asked every single year, NUVO readers have never selected anything other than Bazbeaux as the city’s Best Pizza. In addition to excellent locations (Mass Ave and Broad Ripple) and terrific staff, what makes Bazbeaux so enjoyable is

the variety of options. Pour over a massive list of ingredients and craft your own masterpiece, or skip the work and choose one of the standard favorites like the Basilica, which drops tomato sauce for pesto, adds black olives and sundried tomatoes, and finishes off with feta cheese. www.bazbeaux. com, 811 E. Westfield Blvd. (multiple locations), 255-5711 2nd: Jockamo 3rd: Pizzology (Best) Burrito: La Hacienda Makes sense that the Best Burrito in the city can be found at the same place NUVO readers voted Best Mexican Restaurant more than once. Which is exactly why La Hacienda wins this award too! Sure they may not be as big as your head, but these burritos really do hit the spot like no other. Standard bean, beef and cheese options are punctuated with authentic and aromatic seasoning the never drowns out the basic goodness. Don’t forget a pitcher of Texas Margaritas to wash those burritos down with! www.lahaciendaindy. com, 6825 Graham Road, 317-5772689; 3874 Lafayette Road, 317290-0755; and 6429 E. Scotty’s has some pretty damn good ones—the Best Wings in the city according to NUVO readers. Make sure to try a variety of homemade sauces including brew, barbeque and honey mustard – offered in varying degrees of hotness. www.scottysbrewhouse.com, 1 Virginia Ave., 571-0808. 2nd: Just Wingin’ it 3rd: Chatham Tap

Mug-n-Bun Drive-in has served Indy’s Westside for nearly 50 years.

(Best) Steak: St. Elmo Steakhouse Indianapolis’ first steakhouse has also been chosen as its best time and time again by NUVO readers. This is the tenth win for St. Elmo, and we have do doubt that it will not be the last. This downtown institution has been serving perfectly cooked steaks exactly the way patrons ask for them for more than one hundred years (not to mention a host of other delicious dishes and the best shrimp cocktail on the planet). While the choices are traditional, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Why mess with success? Classic

steakhouse food served in an upscale saloon atmosphere work just fine. www. stelmos.com, 127 S. Illinois St., 635-0636. 2nd: Harry & Izzy’s 3rd: Mo’s (Best) Wings: Scotty’s Brewhouse If you check over in the Music and Nightlife BOI categories, you’ll find that Scotty’s Brewhouse won Best Bar Food, as well as Best Drink Specials and Best Bar for Sports Fans. And what do sports fans who like drink specials and bar food want to eat? Hot Wings, of course! And

Venues along the Mass Ave corridor continue to grow in popularity, as does the Cultural District. One of those growing hotspots is the lovely Chatham Tap. A great hangout for the downtown crowd, Chatham Tap offers great drinks and nightly specials, as well as two taps always dedicated to local brew. The menu is fantastic as well—and by that we mean the garlic cheese fries make us whimper. Non-smoking, outdoor seating and great soccer fans round out the attraction. www.chathamtap.com, 719 Massachusetts Ave., 917-8425. 2nd: Claddagh Irish Pub 3rd: Union Jack’s

(Best) Pork Tenderloin: Mug-n-Bun Best Pork Tenderloin: Mug ‘n Bun Did somebody say tenderloin sandwich? The Mug-n-Bun drive-in restaurant’s patty is pounded out wide, then fried to a crisp, just the way it should be. Some things that never change here: favorite onion rings, Dad’s root beer floats, dogs, fries, double cheeseburgers and more. Be sure to grab some cash (they don’t take credit cards) and eat a nice pork sandwich or a Coney dog covered in fried chili and wash it down with some homemade root beer in a thick, frosty mug. www.mug-n-bun.com, 5211 W. arts, entertainment & media (Best) Upscale Dining: St. Elmo Steakhouse Nothing feels quite as fancy or grown up as putting on the suit, picking up a date and heading downtown for a nice dinner for two. And no other restaurant in the city provides a better upscale dining experience than St. Elmo’s Steakhouse, according to NUVO readers again this year. This is the fourth time in five years that St. Elmo’s has won this award, and it probably won’t be the last. A downtown dining staple for 100+ years, it’s destined to be a favorite for many years to come. www.stelmos. com, 127 S. Illinois St., 635-0636 2nd: Recess 3rd: R Bistro (Best) Budget-minded: Yats The Best Cheap Eats in Indy for nine straight years – NUVO readers love Yats! Which means you might have to wait in line behind a bunch of other people hungry for delicious Cajun and Creole offerings for under six bucks. But the wait is worth it. This is soul food in a soulful place and you will only be a stranger once. Mardi Gras lasts all year, but the menu changes daily. After you’ve decided on your dish comes the hard part, deciding which of the nine different types of hot sauce you’re going to cover your plate with. www.yatscajuncreole.com, 659 Massachusetts Ave., 317-686-6380 and 5463 N. (Best) New Restaurant: Ball & Biscuit Ball & Biscuit has everything going for it, from a prime location (Mass Ave) to great food to craft beers, boutique wines and pre-Prohibition and modern-day cocktails. Especially nice is when they open the front windows and you can not only watch the world go by, but actually reach out and touch it. Kudos to the B&B designers for putting the television where it deserves: nowhere to be seen. This restaurant is a magnet for the Indianapolis nightlife lover (open every day, 4 p.m. to 3 a.m.) and for the adventurous soul wishing to mix the modern with the vintage. www. ballandbiscuit.com, 331 Massachusetts Ave., 636-0539. 2nd: Mesh 3rd: Napolese

(Best) Restaurant: Yats The food is good, the vibe is great, the people are awesome and the party seems perpetually underway. No matter which Yats location you drop in to, you’ve stumbled upon the favorite restaurant of NUVO readers and the one they’ve voted Best Restaurant in Indy for four of the past five years, and the one they also named as having the best vegetarian options and being easiest on the wallet again this year. You won’t leave Yats hungry; and if you leave friendless, you’re probably an ass to begin with. The menu changes daily, check the chalkboard for choices and be prepared to sink into some delicious and affordable Cajun goodness. www.yatscajuncreole.com,

Fair trade coffeehouse Calvin Fletcher donates its profits to the Fletcher Place Neighborhood Association.

(Best) Coffeehouse: Calvin Fletcher’s Coffee Co. In this then two years, this downtown coffee house has climbed to the top of our readers’ list of favorites; and with so many great choices, that is quite a feat. Indy has plenty of places to hang out and drink good coffee, but owners Doug and Jeff Litsey have created a true community center here that starts with their commitment to giving back to the neighborhood. One small example? They

donate tips received from customers to local non-profits, on average about $1000 per month. The fair trade and organic coffee is quite commendable as well. www.cfcoffeecompany.com, 615 Virginia Ave., 423-9697. 2nd: Lazy Daze 3rd: Monon Coffee

(Best) Wait Staff: Scotty’s Brewhouse It makes sense that the winningest of restaurants this year should also be recognized as having the Best Wait Staff in the city. Scotty’s won first place for best bar food, wings and drinks specials, on top of being named the best place for sports fans. All of those accolades would not exist if the service wasn’t top notch as well. From the top down, Scott Wise and his staff are delivering the best of the best according to NUVO readers again this year. 2nd: Jockamo 3rd: Bazbeaux (Best) Brew Pub/Tasting Room: Sun King Brewing Co. Voted the Best Tasting Room/Brew Pub in Indy for the second consecutive year,, the Sun King tasting room on North College has quickly become a hub for local beer lovers and micro brewers to hang out, talk beer, drink beer and take beer home when they go! As of July 4, that includes Sundays in Indiana for the first time since Prohibition! While the tasting room has wacky hours, the web site spells it all out. Beer menus are always changing, though some favorites are fairly standard. Come thirsty and open to trying some new tastes. www. sunkingbrewing.com, 135 N. (Best) Winebar/Wine List: Corner Wine Bar Broad Ripple’s Corner Wine Bar brings a little bit of Paris bistro to an otherwise very Midwestern corner. NUVO readers have been so impressed they’ve voted it as having the Best Wine List a total of eight times, going back to an early win in 1995. With over 150 wines and champagnes to choose from, this tiny bistro has something for every taste and budget. Thankfully, this includes several excellent house wines. They also feature a menu that is both imaginative and a perfect as an accompaniment to the wine. A bit pricey, but excellent and well-worth the splurge. Desserts here are delicious a www.cornerwinebar.com 6331 Guilford Ave., 255-5159 2nd: Recess 3rd: Northside Social
