VOICES Best of Indy

W

A LETTER FROM YOUR EDITORS

elcome to your 26th ever Best of Indy, compiled by you, lovely NUVO readers. That’s right: This whole issue is devoted to your favorite things in Indianapolis. Herein, you’ll find answers to such burning questions as: Indy’s favorite farm-to-table joint; Indy’s favorite religious institution; Indy’s favorite nonprofit; favorite vape shop; favorite burlesque troupe; and on, and on … How do we know they’re your favorite? Well, first, we built the ballots from nominations you made this summer. And then, for six weeks you voted Every. Single. Day. That’s right, all 167 categories were created then voted upon by you. Are your clicking fingers tired? Next, we, your dutiful editors, using math and magic, counted hundreds of thousands of votes during the weeks the Best of Indy ballot was open. And now, it’s time to present the results. Perhaps you’ll note our issue so overfloweth with Best of Indy blurbs this year that it’s taken over our entire magazine. Missing your Soundchecks and Pence Despair-O-Meters and film reviews? Never fear: Everything on NUVO.net is proceeding totally normally this week. On the plus side, this all-Best Of issue is a perfect issue to stuff in your glove box, stash in your dresser or stick on top of your toilet to refer back to whenever you’re thinking, “What, statistically speaking, is Indianapolis’ favorite taco spot? (Psst: You’ll find the answer on page 43.) New this year: some off-the-wall staff picks from your editorial team, because we’re opinionated, mouthy creatures who can’t resist sneaking in our own favorites. You’ll find those sprinkled throughout the book. Alright: Time to turn the page and start reading. We love you, readers. We love you, Indy.

here is no doubt that this year’s political season has left many of us jaded and jittery, yours truly included. And it has all been shared over and over again on social media. So here is a list of superspecific categories and picks that lit up the interwebs over the last few months.

BEST “DON’T PISS ME OFF BECAUSE I WILL MARKET YOU OUT OF OFFICE” MARKETEER In 2015 the Pence Must Go campaign tied for the win in the “Best New Trend” category. But as we’ve seen in 2016, Kevin Warren, founder of Pence Must Go, doubled down on his commitment to see Mike Pence out of the governor’s office by increasing his messaging to include billboards and a large wearable “Mikey” puppet for parades and events. And when Pence jumped his sinking Hoosier ship to join the Trump campaign as the vice-presidential nominee, Warren didn’t miss a step and broadened his message to all of America, saying that Pence and Trump are bad for the country. And if his appearance on the Daily Show following the vice-presidential debate is any indication, Warren may be well on the way to pushing Pence not only out of Indiana, but out of Washington too. pencemustgo.org

BEST “POLITICAL RALLY ON THE FLY” ORGANIZER Usually it takes weeks or even months to organize a rally that is attended by thousands. But for Annette Gross, it only takes a few days, ridiculous legislation and a lot of angry people with access to social media. The former president of Indy’s PFLAG chapter (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) first put her organizational skills to work in 2015 after the state legislature passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). Thousands of angry Hoosiers descended on the statehouse lawn to voice their frustration. This year, Gross channeled the same passion for justice when the legislature passed HEA 1337,

Mike Pence received a lot of extras when he joined Trump’s ticket, including extra security from the U.S. Secret Service. Apparently, an assessment of the governor’s mansion determined other extras were needed. The concrete construction barriers were added to the lawn along with armed guards who get to spend their time in tiny air-conditioned booths that even the 1960s Superman would think twice about changing in. The new look could be described as trailer park-chic. A graffiti art contest for the concrete would have at least given it an urban flair.

KEVIN WARREN PHOTO BY MARK A. LEE

a restrictive abortion bill, which again drew out thousands to protest the legislature’s actions. Well done, Annette. And let’s hope you don’t have to do another one anytime soon. ;)

BEST CAMPAIGN TO EMBARRASS POLITICIANS WITH REPRODUCTIVE PROCESSES AND COLOR-BY-NUMBER GENITALIA PICTURES After Mike Pence signed HEA 1337, women across Indiana became angry at the prospect of the government getting all up into their vajayjay business. An anonymous group of women took it to heart and started a social media campaign called Periods for Pence, where women were encouraged to contact the governor’s office with detailed information about their menstrual cycles. Women across the country got in on the action and other legislators who authored and/or voted for HEA 1337 were included on the contact list. Periods for Pence then hosted “coloring parties” where pictures of hoo-hahs and male members were colored for delivery to Pence. The campaign was covered by national media outlets, bringing attention to the archaic and unconstitutional legislation being passed in Indiana and championed by our governor. Kudos to Periods for Pence for taking the adage, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” and kicking it up a notch.

14 BEST OF INDY // 10.12.16 - 10.19.16 // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER // NUVO

BEST LEGISLATOR TO AUTHOR A “TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO-GOOD, VERY BAD” CIVIL RIGHTS BILL Credit where credit is due must be given to Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle) for his attempt at a LGBTQ civil rights bill. After all, he was the only Republican in the statehouse brave enough to attempt legislation that would satisfy all sides of the issue. (Sen. Tim Lanane wrote a bill as well that followed the “four-words-and-a-comma” mantra, but it never saw the light of day in committee.) However, while noble, the attempt was more than insulting for a lot of people, especially when the abridged version — taking the T out of LGBT — became the version to move out of committee. Public outcry forced the bill to be pulled entirely from consideration. But Sen. Holdman should at the very least get an “E” for effort.

BEST TIME WE GOT RID OF OUR GOVERNOR Donald Trump did a lot of people a lot of favors when he selected Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate. The people of Indiana who wanted Pence out of office are grateful to have it done sooner rather than later. Pence is grateful because Trump may have single-handedly saved his political career.

BEST CASE IN WHICH THE INDIANA ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE WAS EMBARRASSED BY THE ACLU It’s a tie! Both cases involving Exodus Refugee Immigration and Planned Parenthood were cut-and-dry cases of constitutional violations brought to you by the Pence administration and Republican leaders. Ken Falk didn’t have to work too hard to prove that denying Syrian refugees the right to resettle in Indiana is a violation of federal law. The same can be said of many parts of HEA 1337. Working in the solicitor general’s office may be a great experience for attorneys, but it must be hell on the ego to lose over and over and over again.

BEST “HOLY SHIT THOSE FOOD PICTURES MADE MY MOUTH WATER” SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT The Indianapolis food scene has quickly become one that rivals the best cities around the country. With that being said, it’s hard to keep up with all the new restaurants and bars popping up throughout the city. Eat Here Indy is doing a fantastic job of highlighting Indy’s new — and old — eateries with high-quality pictures and videos that will make you want to drop what you’re doing and join them. Fair warning, following their account might put a dent into your bank account. instagram.com/eathereindy n

There could be much worse new trends, right? During an election year that is everything except kind, we’re glad to see Hoosiers still value this quality — or at least feel the need to make it known that Hoosier Hospitality is still a thing. Pay it forward sometime soon. You’ll be happy you did. randomactsofkindness.org

What started as a big middle finger to Indiana Governor — and current Republican Vice Presidential nominee — Mike Pence and his buddies has turned into a great outlet for people to come together and share the love. We here at NUVO love church founder and cannabis connoisseur Bill Levin for his continued effort to bring awareness to Indiana’s cannabis struggle. GIFTS, GOODIES AND GYMS BY NUVO EDITORS

I

EDITORS@N UV O . NET

t’s no coincidence this guide comes out right before the crush of winter holidays. NUVO readers voted on their favorite places to get all kinds of goodies, and if you’re new to Indy, you can use this as a guide to all the hotspots you should stop at for all your ChristmakkahzaSolstice gifts.

BEST SHOP TO HELP FACILITATE YOUR BACKYARD CHICKEN DREAMS So backyard chickens are 1) totally legal and 2) totally baller. And Agrarian, the homestead shop of choice for urban hipsters, can hook you up with some fluffy nuggets. (Get it?) Beekeeping supplies, rain harvesting tools and all kinds of other good stuff, too. Agrarian, you’ve helped us dream big about making our backyard into an agricultural oasis.

BEST PLACE TO SPEND $20 BUT EARN THOUSANDS OF KARMA POINTS Global Gifts is the stuff of fair trade dreams. Our favorite little goody? The Peruvian finger puppets that come in literally dozens of variations. Lion? Duck? Shrimp? They’ve got a puppet for every finger. Beyond puppets — although we could talk about puppets for days, honestly — Global Gifts offers some of the best ChristmakkahzaSolstice gifts in town. And you know you’ve got shopping to do.

BEST PLACE TO SHOP FOR YOUR GEEKY DESIGN FRIEND Hey, we say this as the collective geeky design friend: get your ass to PRINTtEXT, the little shop on 52nd Street that features a wealth of high-end magazines, interesting zines and beautiful print products. This week, PRINTtEXT is launching a new, beautiful city guide called INDPLS at a party on October 15. You should go. Your geeky design friend will thank you later.

BEST PLACE TO TRICK YOUR FRIENDS INTO THINKING YOU KNOW SHIT ABOUT WINE Mass Ave Wine Shop lets you do exactly

that. And this shop is somewhere you should ask a million questions. Tell the folks behind the counter what the occasion is or what’s for dinner, and they will have the perfect bottle. If Indy’s craft beer craze isn’t your speed, try some of their wine flights: you pick red or white and tell them how dry you want it, and they serve up a sampler. There are also some great board games stashed in the back hallway.

BEST SPOT TO GET IN ON THE LOCAL ART GAME Art Bank breaks down the notion that you have to be rolling in dough to be an art collector. They have over 30 artists, a slew of gallery rooms and tons of pieces for less than $100. If you want something big and bold though, there is fine art that can run

over $5,000. The historical building used to be a bank, as you can tell from the huge vault in the back. Wander back there and the little room feels like you found a secret book lair. This is the Book Nook, with locally published titles. If you are an artist, go upstairs. There is another gallery space and an art supply store that focuses on “hardto-find items.”

BEST QUICK GIFTS FOR ANYONE Shop Tibet is tucked away in Broad Ripple off of the main strip. This is the satellite location that started with the one in Bloomington. The small shop is quaint and has a plethora of any kind of fabric you could want. All of the items are made in Tibet and the owner regularly travels to bring them back. BEST LOCAL DONUT SHOP Long’s Bakery

BEST LOCAL LIQUOR/WINE STORE Kahn’s The options here are nearly endless and the staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. If you’re looking to get into craft beer or learning wine, there is no better place to start. Search the aisles and aisles of wine and find your favorites; despite what you may think, you don’t have to break the bank for a great bottle of wine. When it comes to beer, you can always get some out of the cooler, but you’re at Kahn’s and it’s time to branch out and try something new from the giant shelf of specialty beers. And don’t worry, their liquor selection is incredible too, and they always have a few special and rare bottles. kahnsfinewines.com 2nd: Crown Liquors 3rd: Big Red

BEST LOCAL FARM-TO-FORK GROCER/MERCHANT Goose The Market What can we say? The meat is better than anywhere in the city, and they butcher, cure and sell it. Then, to take it a step further, the cheese selection — if you can find a better one, then let us know because cheese is life. BEST LOCAL CUPCAKES The Flying Cupcake The OG of cupcakes in Indy can come to you on the Northside, Downtown or via truck — or honestly one of a zillion other ways, because Flying Cupcake is simply everywhere in Indy these days. Vegan friend? They’ve got you covered. Birthday party you forgot to plan? Hit up TFC. And don’t forget one of their cute twirly ballerinas cake toppers to make your perfectly frosted cupcake look as sweet as it tastes. theflyingcupcake.com 2nd: Gigi’s 3rd: The Cake Bake Shop

BEST LOCAL BAKER — OF ANYTHING Long’s Bakery As above, so below. The donuts are the reason you’re here and that’s why there’s not much more to talk about. Bear claws, cake donuts, danishes (a fancy donut), pecan rolls, long johns, classic glazed, they have everything you could ever want and that’s why you’ll be back time and time again. facebook.com/longsbakery 2nd: Taylor’s Bakery 3rd: Amelia’s Bakery

BEST LOCAL RECORD STORE

Indy Reads Books

Indy CD & Vinyl

Despite the departure of their executive director Travis DiNicola earlier this year, Indy Reads has gone and is going strong. The local bookstore not only hosts local author lectures and events, it’s a source of revenue for the not-for-profit educational branch — a source for adult literacy in Indianapolis. If you are cleaning out your library, those titles can do a world of good here. indyreadsbooks.com

The owners of Indy CD and Vinyl have taken a delightful thing — a record store, nestled in Broad Ripple Village — and made it even more delightful. Renovations and reorganizations highlight the shop’s offerings, and the A-Squared Productions promotional know-how puts together major events like Record Store Day to a T. The point is this: a thriving, cultural city deserves thriving record stores. And we, Indy, have them. indycdandvinyl.com

BEST LOCAL CLOTHING STORE FOR MEN James Dant

Tommy Dant changed the men’s clothing game in our city when he opened up this little shop in Irvington. The clothes here, while expensive, are the highest quality clothing articles you’re going to find in Indianapolis. The same goes for the accessories, including handcrafted rings, watches, knives, wallets, hats, and they even have their own line of beard oils for those of us with big ol’ bushy beards. FILMMAKERS, FESTIVALS AND FINE ARTS BEST FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD FILM FANATIC

BY EMILY TAYLOR ETAYL OR@N U V O . NE T

T

his year has been filled with big moves, openings and endeavors. Art giants all over the city have been going through growing pains, with departures like Henry Leck from the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, Travis DiNicola from Indy Reads, and moves such as iMOCA from Fountain Square and the Cabaret from the Columbia Club. No doubt it’s a time for transition, and with that we have taken note of some exciting changes afoot. You voted for some of your favorite things around Indy, now here are some of ours.

BEST INSTALLATION THAT FILLED A WHOLE CITY Columbus, Ind. is known around the country for being an architecture lover’s dreamland. It’s ranked just behind cities like New York and Chicago. While the town is impressive enough on its own and deserves a walkthrough, the city decided to take it a step further with Exhibit Columbus. Richard McCoy, formerly with the IMA, is working with Landmarks Columbus to scatter interactive art installations near buildings of interest.

BEST FINAL BOW After 30 years Indianapolis Children’s Choir founder and artistic director Henry Leck decided to step down. Since its original conception, the ICC has grown to cover nine counties. ICC has performed all over the United States and on nearly every continent. The choir’s reach is broad, but it was generated by Leck himself. Our news editor Amber Stearns was an ICC kid herself. For the NUVO Cultural Visionary Award that we gave him, she noted: “The reputation of the choir is renown based on its own merits as well as the reputation of Leck himself. Numerous composers from all over the world have written music specifically for the ICC. When Leck informed the choir’s administrative board that he would retire from his position as artistic director in the 30th anniversary year, composers were contacted to gauge

Craig Mince believes in the magic of moviegoing, the thrill of seeing otherworldly imagery light up the silver screen. In this age of Netflix, he pulls people off of their couches and into the theater. The manager of the IMAX Theater at the Indiana State Museum, Mince is always making trips to the cinema special, whether by decorating the lobby with a mural of the Millennium Falcon or screening local celebrities’ favorite movies. (This year included Mayor Joe Hogsett’s favorite, The Natural.) This isn’t your typical museum IMAX theater with a lineup of nature documentaries. Sure, it has some of those, but it also has something more compelling — Mince’s quirky personality and pure love of movies.

interest in the creation of an original piece for Leck’s farewell concert. (Leck gave two years notice for his retirement plans.) Out of 15 composers contacted, 13 responded with the intent to write. As a result, all of the music performed in the final concert was original music, written specifically for the occasion.”

BEST OVERHAUL OF ARTS EDUCATION Last year at the annual Start With Art luncheon a monumental announcement was made — that Indy would be one of the chosen cities for the Any Given Child Indy program. The concept was created by the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as a counterstrike to ever-lowering arts funding on a national level. The center provides $125,000 worth of guidance to folks in Indy who will be heading up the overhaul (like the Arts Council of Indianapolis, IPS, the city and various arts organizations). Over the last year the Center has helped create surveys and develop strategic plans, but now it’s up to Indy to finish the job.

BEST NEW SPOT ON THE BLOCK Indy’s Eastside is rapidly growing, especially with the help of bicentennial funding and the identification of the Great Places 2020 neighborhoods; one of which is Englewood,

30 BEST OF INDY // 10.12.16 - 10.19.16 // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER // NUVO

which is where Cat Head Press has set up shop. The visual art press is run by Dominic Senibaldi, Michael Hoefle, Liz Wierzbicki and Marna Shopoff. Over the last year they have received funding and support from iMOCA, Englewood CDC and LISC — some of which was because of their location. The space has five artist studios on the second floor and a central print shop and litho press on the main. Their end game is fine art printmaking studios for artists who can’t afford access to the expensive equipment.

BEST MURAL THAT (FINALLY) SHOWCASED AN INDIANA WRITER OF COLOR Indy’s rich literary history often gets labeled just as that — history. Current Hoosier authors like John Green and Dan Wakefield have breached best-seller lists, but what about the writers of color who are renowned in the literary world? Where is their recognition? The question isn’t easily forgotten now that there is a 30-foot mural of Indiana poet Mari Evans (who was also a founder of the Black Arts movement) along Mass Ave. The mural was commissioned by Big Car Collaborative and the artist, Michael “Alkemi” Jordan, was chosen by Evans herself. Big Car chief curator Shauta Marsh put it well: “I believe everybody should know who Mari Evans is and what she stands for and what she means for our community.”

Based in Bloomington, Bandit Motion Pictures is a production company making quite an impression. Its latest film — a crazy backwoods thriller called Plank Face — wowed audiences at September’s HorrorHound Weekend convention here and went on to receive rave reviews, including one from the famed horror magazine Fangoria. Earlier this year, Bandit Motion Pictures garnered acclaim across the world for another forest horror flick called Harvest Lake. Led by genre-lovers Scott Schirmer and Brian K. Williams, this film factory is bound to keep cranking out instant classics. Keep an eye on Bandit Motion Pictures — it’s making Indy’s horror community proud.

BEST FANCY FILM PALACE THAT’S NOT TOO ARTSY-FARTSY Since it opened five years ago, IU Cinema has included such world-renowned guests as Roger Corman, Werner Herzog, Peter Weir, John Sayles and Meryl Streep, to name just a few. It’s dedicating the month of October to filmmaker John Boorman, the master behind such classics as Excalibur and Deliverance. Although it’s geared toward hardcore, serious film students, IU Cinema knows how to kick back and have fun as well. (On February 2, it showed Groundhog Day all day long!) Whether you’re a complete and utter movie geek or just a casual film fan, IU Cinema is the place to go. n

BEST LOCAL ART GALLERY Indianapolis Museum of Art The IMA has had their ups and downs since the price hike from totally free to $18. But we have seen innovative curation from folks like former IMA staffer Scott Stulen, who made a point to bring in local artists — something lacking from the museum in years past. With additions like the now-reoccurring mini golf course, the IMA hopes to boost community engagement and bring in those who wouldn’t normally come to an art museum. imamuseum.org 2nd: 5547 Project 3rd: Harrison Center for the Arts

BEST LOCAL VISUAL 2-D ARTIST

Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

Amanda Keller

It’s simple: The largest children’s museum in the country deserves this win. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis constantly brings fresh exhibits and ideas to Indy. One that we love is What’s Your Story, which takes family and community oral history and turns it into an exhibit showing life all over the world. While you are there, try Chinese painting or check out the new Doc McStuffins area for the little ones. childrensmuseum.org 2nd: Indianapolis Museum of Art 3rd: Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library

Keller has a unique style of children’s illustration. And to show it off, she has a published children’s book under her belt. The Herron grad has developed her characters (all fantastic animals and creatures) into a recognizable brand. BEST LOCAL VISUAL 3-D ARTIST Matt Panfil Panfil is a local artist whose collages are more like an eye-spy game than anything. His threedimensional work is unbelievably intricate and brings a whole new meaning to collages. In his recent Do317 show he noted: “With my cut-paper collages, I’m primarily driven by the urge to coalesce seemingly disparate scenes, figures, symbols and various other imagery into a unified, complex narrative. I find myself constantly engaged with collage for its endless potential to infuse archetypal and abstract imagery, with which I seek to penetrate what Aldous Huxley dubbed ‘the mind’s antipodes’: subconscious realms of raw existential data.” rawartists.org/mpanfil 2nd: Miniatures of Tomorrow 3rd: Beatriz Artist Papel Picado

BEST LOCAL PUBLIC PARK OR GREENSPACE IMA Hundred Acres It really is one of the best not-so-hidden pockets of Indy. In addition to the myriad of sculptures (like “Park of the Laments” and “Alfredo Jaar”) the park is home to hundreds of wildlife critters, a livable iceberg and lots of edible plants. You might want to check and see what is what first though. Or better yet, take the adult summer camp next year. Colts owner Jim Irsay believes newly re-signed head coach Chuck Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson have what it takes to return to the Big Game. But a rough start to the 2016 season had fans questioning their return. One thing is certain: Star quarterback Andrew Luck has (mostly) proven that he’s able to fill Manning’s shoes and is considered the team’s most treasured player. Can we get the man an O-line, please? ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT

Best of Indy

BEST LOCAL ATHLETE Pat McAfee McAfee has come a long way since his infamous swim in the Broad Ripple Canal years ago. The Colts punter has jumped onto the stand-up comedy scene — he’s got some A+ stories — with a bang, coming in a close second in that category this year. He’s also darn good at his day job, earning a Pro Bowl spot during the 2014 season. Safe to say he’s stayed true to his nickname Boomstick. Colts.com 2nd: Andrew Luck 3rd: Tamika Catchings

BEST LOCAL BIKE TRAIL Monon Trail If you are looking for plans for a day out you only need one word — Monon. This trail provides your activity (bike, walk, skate, run or move through at your choice) and plenty of entertainment from the many breweries, restaurants and shops whose front doors are directed right at the trail. The path has even become a real estate gold mine, with homes being coveted for their quick access. Follow the pedestrian-only route north/south, then hop off on the Cultural Trail for east/west. The Monon boasts some of Indy’s finest

public art and murals as well. Not to mention access to some killer parks, soccer, frisbee and football fields. indy.gov 2nd: Cultural Trail 3rd: indy Cultural Trail

BEST LOCAL OUTDOOR FESTIVAL Circle City IN Pride Festival Indy Pride has some big changes coming to it this year. In addition to bringing on an Executive Director in place of the former president (Jason H. Nolen-Doerr, who will serve in the interim until the festival next year), for whom the search will begin in 2017, the festival that is traditonally at the American Legion Mall will be moved to Military Park. Even though the changes might seem like a lot in one year, the spirit of the festival is growing every year with support from Indy. Hopefully someday soon Indy really will welcome all. ood and drink are essential parts of life: They bring us together across all barriers and give us something to enjoy. Even if we want to fight and bicker over nearly every other aspect of this city, state, country or world, Indianapolis luckily has a shit ton of food and drink that are fucking delicious and that is something we all can be happy about. So pull up a chair, grab a glass of your favorite libation and let’s dig into the best food and drink this city has to offer.

BEST GODDAMN COOKIE IN THE WHOLE CITY We’re not sure if there’s crack cocaine in the Four Birds Bakery oatmeal cookie that the small bakery sells at places like Goose the Market, or if it’s just a really fucking good cookie. Cross-our-heart-hope-to-die, if you can eat only one cookie in all of Indy, make it this one. If Four Birds opened a brick and mortar shop, we’d literally move in, because this cookie, man. This. Fucking. Cookie.

BEST LOCAL SPOTS THAT OPENED AFTER BEST OF INDY NOMINATIONS ENDED New restaurants are popping up all over the city all the time, which is about the best “problem” a city could have. Since our nominations ended, dozens of new restaurants have joined the Indianapolis dining family. A few of these are well worth mentioning. You want seafood? Head to Mass Ave’s fanciest restaurant Salt on Mass. The seafood is fresh and delicious. Wanna play bartender? Rebar is a new concept for Indy where you pour your own beer from the taps, which is great for a night of beer tasting. The food is standard bar fare done well, and there’s no shame in that. Ever tried Russian food? Well, if you haven’t, don’t worry, you don’t have to go spend time shirtless, riding horses and fighting bears with Putin; head to Indy’s only Russian restaurant, Gregory’s Russian Restaurant, instead. Enjoy a cup of borsch

and a plate of pelmeni (dumplings with pork and beef, mmm, вкусно).

BEST LOCAL FOOD TO EAT BY THE JARFUL Speaking of things we eat way too much of: Noblesville PB outfit B-Happy Peanut Butter makes something we thought couldn’t be done any better — peanut butter — well, better. B-Happy offers flavors like white chocolate pretzel, snickerdoodle and chocolate toffee, all with little crispy morsels nestled within the butter for a Rice Krispies-but-better type of experience. Find it in shops like Wildwood. We’re happy. We’re so, so happy.

THE BIGGEST REASON TO TAKE A DRIVE DOWN 38TH STREET Many people don’t quite realize the incredible quality of international restaurants on Indy’s Westside on and around 38th Street. It truly is a cultural epicenter when it comes to cuisine, with restaurants like Fritanga Nicaraguense (Nicaraguan), Havana Cafe (Cuban), Chapati (Pakistani), Inkas (Peruvian) and many more.

If you want to branch out, but don’t want to go it alone, Indianapolis’ International Marketplace does weekly international lunch and dinner tours for you to join. Get to know all about it at imcoalition.org.

BEST POPCORN TO ACCOMPANY YOUR COCKTAILS The team at Plat 99 cooks up some incredible dishes and their bar program is continually in the top tier in the city, but the true gem of this place, other than the views, is the little bags of free truffle popcorn that accompany your drinks when they come to the table. The stuff is addicting and we’ve gotta say it’s reason enough to spend good money on a drink here.

BEST PLACE TO TOTALLY CRUSH YOUR BOYFRIEND AT NFL BLITZ WHILE DRINKING BEER It doesn’t get much more throwback than a night at Tapper’s Arcade Bar. Grab a can of Hamm’s, or if you’re a craft kid, go for the latest Indiana City offering, and get to playing your favorite arcade games (all of

which are free, except pinball machines). Challenge your S.O. to Mortal Kombat (just remember: Sub Zero- D, F, LP), and once you Finish Him, bring his spirits back up by working together to defeat Donkey Kong and his barrels or extend a second challenge of pouring beers for thirsty bar-goers in Tapper.

BEST (AND ONLY) PLACE RON SWANSON AND LESLIE KNOPE WOULD AGREE ON If you’re looking for meat and it’s breakfast time, the best meal of the day, then Love Handle is where you should be. The biscuits and gravy is like an American Dream, a true “man’s” meal; even if you have lady parts, you’re a man if you’re eating these. (That’s what Ron Swanson would say, anyway.) But, if you’re anything like my friend Leslie, you probably want to go for those sweet options — extra whipped cream, please and thank you — and there’s nothing wrong with that. Don’t miss their cheesecakes, which I top with pork belly, because I’m American and I can. n

BEST LOCAL BEER FEST Indiana Microbrewers’ Festival

BEST INDIANA BREWERY Sun King Brewing Co. Once again, the team at Sun King reigns supreme. Is it due to their incredible philanthropic presence in in the state? Or possibly it’s the fact that they have spent seven years converting many mass-market drinkers from chugging cases of Bud and Coors to spending their money on locally made brews. They even helped change legislation to increase the barrel and distribution limits for Indiana brewers, allowing for more beer for you and me. In the end, all that matters is they’re making good beer, and we’re drinking a shit ton of it. sunkingbrewing.com 2nd: Bier Brewery 3rd: Black Acre Brewing Co.

BEST INDIANA BEER Sunlight Cream Ale — Sun King Brewing Co. It should come as no surprise that the Best Brewery would make the Best Beer. It’s light and easy on the palate and the perfect beer for craft beer lovers, as well as recent converts from the macro brew swill. The fact that you can get it in dozens of restaurants and bars around the city, or if you’re throwing a party there is always a local liquor store with plenty of cans for you and all your guests, helps make it the most popular beer in the city. sunkingbrewing.com 2nd: Workingman’s Pilsner — Fountain Square Brewing Co. 3rd: Lift Off IPA — Daredevil Brewing Co.

Any craft beer drinker will know why this festival has taken the top spot again this year. No beer fest celebrates the heart and soul of the beer community quite like the Microbrewers’ Festival. This is the festival where brewers pull out their small batch, off-the-wall beers and the local beer aficionados drink them up like they’re little 3-ounce samples of water after 40 days stranded in the desert. If tasting a barrelaged scorpion pepper gose is up your alley, you’ve probably been to every year of this fest. indybeerfest.com

BEST LOCAL BEER SELECTION Twenty Tap Don’t be misled by the name; this place is stocked with way more than 20 taps, and that doesn’t even begin to touch the bottle and bomber selection. The worst part about this place is the fact that you spend as much time trying to narrow down to one (or four) craft beers to enjoy during each visit as you do drinking. BEST INDIANA WINE Moscato — Oliver Winery Moscatos have become a favorite of many wine drinkers; its sweetness is enjoyable, especially in the warmer months of the year. BEST INDIANA WINE FEST Vintage Indiana Wine Festival Vintage Indiana has won this spot for years and years, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down in popularity. Taking over Historic Military Park every summer, this festival offers an incredible selection of wineries from around the state and always has an enjoyable lineup of bands for the day. BEST LOCAL WINE LIST St. Elmo Steakhouse If you’ve ever seen the wine cellar in this legendary Indianapolis restaurant, then you know why they’ve taken the top spot. There are bottles in the stone-floored room older

than any Millennial, which shouldn’t surprise as much as the fact that they have 20,000 bottles of wine. BEST LOCAL DISTILLER Hotel Tango Hotel Tango was the city’s first distillery when it came into Fletcher Place and they have been creating multiple award-winning spirits since then. The mountain-lodge-esque taproom is one of the most comfortable rooms in the city with its handcrafted stone fireplace and comfy couches; add to that the deftly crafted cocktails and you have a recipe for a nearly perfect evening of drinking Indianapolis-crafted spirits. BEST LOCAL JAPANESE/SUSHI RESTAURANT Ichiban Sushi Bar & Asian Cuisine It’s a rarity to see a place take the top spot after not having made the top of the charts in the previous years, but the people at Ichiban are definitely doing something right and the most notable thing is their rolls. While their nigiri and chirashi are great options, they shine when it comes to rolls, and in Indianapolis, this is the way to do it. BEST LOCAL THAI RESTAURANT Siam Square There’s no doubt that Siam Square has continually served authentic, quality Thai food to the city of Indianapolis since it opened. BEST LOCAL INDIAN RESTAURANT India Garden Once again India Garden takes the top spot (as it has every single year) and we must say, it’s all about that Indian buffet. It’s hard to say what exactly sets this place apart, mainly because there are so many great things to say about the northern Indian cuisine that this kitchen cooks up every day. While the chicken tikka is near Tandoori perfection here, you have to branch out and try something exciting like the garden special biryani or the crazy spicy lamb madras. indiagardenindy.com 2nd: TIE Shalimar, Spice Box 3rd: Clay Oven

BEST LOCAL ITALIAN RESTAURANT Mama Carolla’s What can we say, they serve better Italian than your mama. The place feels just like an Italian home that has been nestled into SoBro, the patio is easily the most romantic place to have dinner in the city (spoiler alert) and the food — marone! — the food is a treasure. BEST LOCAL GREEK RESTAURANT Santorini Greek Kitchen Start off with some ouzo, then cover your cheese in alcohol, light it on fire and scream OPA! From there it really doesn’t matter what you eat; whether it’s pastitsio (pretty much Greek lasagna), a leg of lamb or something simple like gyro, you can’t go wrong with your decision. The only hard decision you’ll make is deciding how much baklava is too much baklava. It doesn’t get much easier than that, does it? Santorini-greek-kitchen.com 2nd: Greek Islands 3rd: Canal Bistro

BEST LOCAL MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT Bosphorus Istanbul Café Climbing its way to the top this year, Bosphorus is one of two Turkish restaurant in the city and for that reason alone it is a not-to-be-missed restaurant. If you’ve never had doner, it is similar to gyro, but just different enough to be an exciting dish; but if you’re going to do Bosphorus the right way, go for a Bosphorus Special. It’s an insane amount of food, but sometimes it’s worth going into a food coma. Also, watch out for the owner; he has a knack for spilling beers on customers. Bosphoruscafe.us 2nd: Canal Bistro 3rd: The Mediterranean Grill

BEST LOCAL AFRICAN RESTAURANT Abyssinia There is no meal in Indianapolis that is more unique than here. You’re seated at a handsewn communal table, you have a mass of food in front of you, including injera (a type of bread and staple of Ethiopian cuisine) which will essentially be your utensils for the meal. Grab the soft pancake-like bread in your right

hand and dig in (literally) to to the bountiful, spicy, savory food items around the table; two favorites are the Azifa and Minchet Abish. Then, finish off with a cup of Ethiopian tea, the ritual behind it is fascinating and the taste is bold and fantastic. abyssiniaethiopianrestaurantindy.com 2nd: Major 3rd: Axum Ethiopian

BEST LOCAL BRITISH/ENGLISH/ CELTIC RESTAURANT Chatham Tap The Prince Dean’s Angel Wings are good enough to make you believe that they’re truly angelic. The atmosphere during international soccer matches is electric, and once you have a pint or two of your favorite ale in you you’ll be cheering and jeering right along with the crowd. The fact that they also serve late-night makes this the perfect place to end a night on Mass Ave, especially with those garlic and cheese chips — sure it’s just fries covered in ranch and cheese, but damn they’re addicting. BEST LOCAL CAJUN/CREOLE RESTAURANT Yats

You know it, you love it and once again you’ve voted it the best. Yats is the perfect answer to “I want good food for cheap” and it has been for years. Fill yourself to the brim with some chili cheese étoufée or vegan white chili, garlic bread and a healthy dose of your favorite hot sauce. BEST LOCAL DELI/SANDWICH SHOP Shapiro’s Delicatessen A kosher-style delicatessen so steeped in tradition that it rivals most anywhere in the Midwest as the place to get corned beef and pastrami piled on top of rye. It is familyowned and operated and it is an Indianapolis landmark, which is why nearly 2,000 people a day walk through their doors for the aforementioned sandwiches, matzo ball soup, mac and cheese and an endless list of other deli staples. BEST LOCAL CRAFT BURGERS Bru Burger Getting in here isn’t always the easiest because it’s continually packed, but good news is there is plenty to see up and down Mass Ave while you’re waiting. It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it. Bruburgerbar.com 2nd: Kuma’s Corner 3rd: Punch Burger

BEST LOCAL CHEAP BURGERS Steer-In The decor hasn’t been updated in at least 50 years and that’s just part of the charm of this place. With a menu this size it’s impossible to choose just one of the ridiculously delicious items, but you wouldn’t be making the wrong decision to go with a burger. Don’t forget to pair it with an ice cream float or malt. You won’t find any cool, trendy articles about the Steer-In in any local publication and that’s because they are superb at doing classic diner dishes and doing them well. BEST LOCAL ARTISAN PIZZA Bazbeaux They were making artisan pizzas before “artisan” was a thing. My personal favorite happens to be the vegan biscuits and gravy, but a close second is the Rich Girl, a play on a po’boy that puts many meat-filled po’boys to shame. threecarrotsindy.com 2nd: The Sinking Ship 3rd: Ezra’s Enlightened Café

BEST LOCAL SMALL PLATE/TAPAS RESTAURANT Barcelona Tapas You know what you should get here? A bunch of small plates of food. Choose anything and share it and love it. Share it 46 BEST OF INDY // 10.12.16 - 10.19.16 // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER // NUVO

with your friends or share it with the people at the next table; that’s what tapas are all about. If you’re wanting more bang for your buck, don’t miss out on their brunch. It’s an all-you-can-eat brunch including a buffet and food from the kitchen, plus there’s sangria. I know what you’re doing this Sunday. barcelonatapas.com 2nd: Bluebeard 3rd: Marrow

BEST LOCAL PLACE TO EAT CHEAP Yats Yep, told you it was cheap. This was my go-to in college when I was running low on money (so, like, every day) and my friends wanted to go out for a meal. Usually I stuck to the meal plan at Butler (thanks Mom and Dad!), but sometimes it is important to get some flavor in your life, and Yats has plenty of that to go around. Why are you still reading? Just go eat Yats already. yatscajuncreole.com 2nd: Peppy Grill 3rd: Steer-In

BEST LOCAL PLACE FOR UPSCALE DINING Bluebeard This truly is only as upscale as you make it. While it’s possible to spend top dollar on a large meal here, including a bottle of wine or two chosen by the sommelier and full dishes for everyone, it’s just as easy to split some small plates, maybe some charcuterie, and not destroy your wallet. If I may make a suggestion, splurge at least once for the upscale meal; it is an experience you won’t soon forget and will remind

BEST LOCAL PLACE TO HAVE A ROMANTIC DINNER Mama Carolla’s Told you it was a spoiler, but seriously, that patio is the absolute best place for date night. The Italianate architecture, statues and fountains, the soft glow of the lights and the quiet hum of the crowd make for a beautiful and intimate evening. Share a bottle of wine, spend the evening conversing and fill up on delicious Italian food. That’s amore. Mamacarollas.com

BEST LOCAL RESTAURANT FOR THOSE LATE-NIGHT MUNCHIES Sinking Ship When you’re walking into “the ship,” there is no doubt you’ll see an eclectic crowd, especially if you’re walking in during the wee hours of the morning. That’s because the late-night munchies don’t discriminate and neither does Sinking Ship. When your head server has been taking care of tables and bringing back a slew of regulars for 40 years, you know you’re doing something right. A meal at St. Elmo is truly an experience unlike anywhere else in the city, and for this reason, many of the city’s most well-to-do citizens have business meetings here, celebrities come back every time they’re in town and people like you and I go here during special occasions, because we know it is special and the service is one of the major aspects of that special-ness. BEST NEW LOCAL RESTAURANT St. Joseph Brewery and Public House At St. Joseph’s, you’re drinking beer in a church and hopefully you’re doing so on Sunday, because that means you’re having one of the best brunches in the city on top of it. BEST OUTDOOR DINING Rick’s Cafe Boatyard If you’ve ever eaten at a waterside restaurant in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina or anywhere on the country’s southeastern coast, you’ve eaten at Rick’s, except you spent a lot more money getting there and on the food itself. MUSIC and NIGHTLIFE Best of Indy

MARTINIS, METAL AND MCS BY KATHERINE COPLEN K COPL EN @N U V O . NET

N

ow as your Music Editor, I might be a little biased, but I think music is the best thing that exists on planet Earth. Okay, a lot biased. But really: Is there any greater pleasure that exists on this temporal plane than hearing your favorite band play in your favorite venue? Nope. We’re gonna say a strong nope to that. Your Best of Indy music section includes your favorite bands, venues, albums, and so much more. For those, turn the page.

BEST PUNK SHIT WE’VE SEEN ALL YEAR

Draken Mogollón hasn’t had all the breaks in life, but he is an 11-year-old who loves music. This was abundantly clear watching him on stage playing Brad St. Patrick’s guitar after Black Cat Rebellion’s set at Kids’ Punk Rock Night. This kid talked his way onstage and then, unlike most would, when suddenly put on the spot, he actually had the chops to do something with the instrument. We’ve all been the wide-eyed kid in the room, looking up to musicians, wanting to be that guy on stage ruling the crowd. Draken’s already taken more than a few steps toward that goal, and in my eyes that is Punk As Fuck.

BEST PUB TO FEEL VERY, VERY BRITISH Duck inside The Wellington’s wooden door and you may as well be transported to the Leaky Cauldron — or perhaps a Muggle British establishment. Seriously, the Wellington, which is attached to Corner Wine Bar, is so quaint it doesn’t even have a sign. The drinks are stiff, the dartboards are usually open and seating is comfy enough to have a little kip. This is a Broad Ripple Strip spot that doesn’t feel at all like a spot on the Broad Ripple Strip.

BEST 100-YEAR-OLD REASON INDY’S MUSIC SCENE RULES Indianapolis has had a music scene of international importance since at least

INDY JAZZ FEST’S WES MONTGOMERY TRIBUTE DAY PHOTO BY MARK SHELDON

1928. That’s the year Indy blues gods Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell recorded their groundbreaking version of “How Long, How Long Blues.” The record was an immediate hit. It was bigger than a hit. It was a sensation. Blackwell’s single-string leads changed the way guitarists approached their instrument and Carr’s impossibly cool vocals led Black American music in a more urban direction. And while we’re visiting the 1920s, If you factor in the importance of outlying spaces in Central Indiana like Richmond’s Gennett Records, then Indiana certainly emerges as one of the most important music-making hubs of early 20th century global culture. From Charley Patton to Louis Armstrong, Gennett was recording some of the most revolutionary musicians of the era. Indianapolis would continue to produce musicians of global importance into the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. Artists like Freddie Hubbard, J.J. Johnson and Wes Montgomery defined new levels of cool while changing the sound and perceptions of their chosen instruments.

BEST GROUP PHOTO Hands down, it’s the shot by Mark Sheldon from Indy Jazz Fest’s Wes Montgomery tribute day you see at the top of this

page. From front, you see: Robert Montgomery, Fareed Haque, Russell Malone, Darren Montgomery, Dave Stryker, Royce Campbell, Henry Johnson, Zev Feldman, Willie Jones III, Luke Sellick and Rick Germanson. That’s a whole lot of musical power gathered to celebrate the music of Wes — plus his mother and son. Hey, there’s a reason Indy Jazz Fest won Best Festival in this year’s Best of Indy — okay, no more spoilers.

BEST BAND TO SEE IN A GERMAN BIERGARTEN WITH YOUR DAD

BEST TIME INDY’S MUSIC SCENE CAME TOGETHER FOR A PARTY

BEST REASON TO KEEP INVESTING IN A THEORETICALLY DYING MEDIUM

Having attended several all-encompassing music events in recent years, I cannot say that I ever have attended one that featured such a diverse representation of voices as Fountain Square Music Fest. Alongside Andrew W.K. and Thurston Moore, all kinds of local musicians were given a chance to show off their talent, whether it was Hoops with their guitar-pop or Sweet Poison Victim with their invigorating afro-funk. When I think of my ideal cultural events of any kind, this is what I want to see most. The more this city’s local music communities come together and make awesome things happen, the better.

For years, Polka Boy has taken over places like the Rathskeller and performed three sets for a legion of dads — including our own dad. Polka Boy is the best kind of cover band: One that has a ton of fun; one that has hyper-loyal fans; and one that plays polka. What can we say? Our brains have been melted by gigantic mugs of weihenstephaner and love of “Hungarian Dance No. 5.”

Okay, so you’re reading a print magazine at this moment in time, right? So it makes sense that you’re also — if you’re a loyal reader and local music fan — investing in some vinyl once in a while. There’s more than just our great local record stores to thank for the abundance of vinyl. Local labels like Joyful Noise Recordings, In Store Recordings and new kid on the block Fonoflo Records pump out tons of interesting, beautiful vinyl releases yearly. Keep independent music (and independent print media) alive by investing in physical copies of the music you love. Okay, stepping off our soapbox now. n

If there’s one thing you, dear readers, have made abundantly clear during your best-of voting, it is this simple fact: You freakin’ love cover bands. And we get it! Is there a better feeling than singing along to your favorite song by your favorite band with your favorite friends at your favorite venue? We’re gonna say no — unless you add eating a delicious taco to the mix. Last year, Jambox took top honors in the Best Cover Band slot, and this year, you pushed them all the way to the Best Local Band overall. Jam on, Jambox. jamboxindy.com

Jambox And there’s one more for the cover band that apparently owns all of Indy’s hearts and minds. Jambox plays regularly at rock venues in town: Southport Bar and Grill, The Doghouse, and Ziggy’s. We recommend, heartily, that you catch ‘em out on the town. Jamboxindy.com 2nd: Sugar Moon Rabbit 3rd: Glamerica

Oreo Jones Jones is more than a wildly popular MC — he’s a member of White Moms, a collaborator with zillions of Fountain Square musicians and the founder of the wildly successful hip-hop fest Chreece, which finished its second year in the Square with another sold-out crowd. Jones also dropped one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2016, Cash for Gold, this spring and showcased it on the road with Ghost Gun Summer through the fall. It’s no surprise that Ghost Gun Summer guys Sirius Blvck and John Stamps took second and third place in this poll: Indy loves GGS, and GGS loves it right back. oreojones.com 2nd: Sirius Blvck 3rd: John Stamps

The best thing about being a band labeled “different” is being such a band and still finding a dedicated fan base. Bizarre Noir’s visually inventive, ever-growing live stage show is a big part of what has continued to attract those fans, giving Bizarre Noir a leg up on the competition when it came to Best of Indy voting this year. “We think of our stage show as a way to tell a story and be visually entertaining at the same time,” says Bizarre Noir’s singer Chris Charles. “Our local fans have been very helpful in the voting, creating a snowball effect. It turns out there are a lot more weirdos out there than we’d thought!” — JONATHAN SANDERS bizarrenoir.bandcamp.com

BEST LOCAL JAZZ Charlie Ballantine For a second year, Jacobs School-trained guitarist Charlie Ballantine takes top honors in the jazz world — and it’s particularly fitting that he claims a top spot as Jazz Fest celebrates the music of Wes Montgomery, a Hoosier jazz guitar legend. BEST LOCAL MUSIC FESTIVAL Indy Jazz Fest It’s a delightful coincidence that we’re penning this blurb as Indy Jazz Fest continues all around us. The festival has morphed in recent years to a 10-day takeover of Indianapolis, popping up in surprising and expected places (IUPUI’s Campus Center, The Jazz Kitchen, Eskenazi Hospital). It remains true that Indy’s jazz community is the gem in our musical history crown, and that every year that another Jazz Fest takes over Indy is a good year. indyjazzfest.com 2nd: Fountain Square Music Fest 3rd: Virginia Ave. Folk Festival

BEST NEW LOCAL ALBUM (AFTER JAN. 2015) Charlie Ballantine — Providence Listening to an advance copy of Providence, I am struck by its interlacing of boldness and sensitivity. It is simultaneously atmospheric and personal, opening with “Old Hammer,” a tone poem taking you on a cityscape walk with a personality of immediate consequence. You meet the neighbors and strangers, all your senses engaged. Guitar doodling opens “Providence” with a hint of bossa nova sliding into a ballad with a pas de deus between guitar and alto sax, growing into a melding and blending of organ, drums and bass. “Eyes Closed” is dreaminess growing into ecstasy — it is shape-shifting, tempo change-driven. “Gentle Lena Clare” is pure poetry — a soundbite Ken Burns would snatch up for a documentary. — RITA KOHN charlieballantine.com 2nd: Shake Ups in Ponyville - Rock Candy 3rd: American Bombshell - No Regrets

BEST BIG VENUE FOR LIVE MUSIC Old National Centre (Egyptian Room / Murat Theatre) It’s kind of cheating for Old National Centre to win this category, since really the Centre features three different big venues for music — four, counting the parking lot where Food Truck Fridays go down. BEST PUNK MUSIC VENUE Melody Inn SUBMITTED PHOTO

BEST SMALL VENUE FOR LIVE MUSIC The Hi-Fi The DO317/MOKB Presents crew did a very good thing when they opened up The Hi-Fi at the Murphy Arts Center three or so years ago. The venue is a perfect robin’s nest of a place: roomy enough to fit in 150 or so crazed fans for a sold-out weekend show, but small enough to feel super intimate when it’s you, your favorite band and ten of your friends. Expect some changes to that

size, though, when the Hi-Fi reopens in January after a renovation and expansion into the iMOCA space. The venue leans towards roots and rock, but expect regular local hip-hop, a smattering of metal and punk and all kinds of go-to weekly, monthly or bi-monthly events like Punk Rock Karaoke, MoTown Mondays and Highlife with Sweet Poison Victim and DJ Kyle Long. ment to the local music scene and self-expression draws a non-conformist crowd that likes to hang here, and recently a few dance nights have been retooled to feature stuff like drum and bass. Take a break in the PBR Lounge or out on their chill back patio. melodyindy.com

Hats off to everyone who runs the Melody Inn, a.k.a. NUVO’s Cheers (it’s right across the street from our office, and we couldn’t be happier). And good luck finding a place better suited to local punks than the Melody Inn. Every Saturday, they host Punk Rock Night, and for many, many years in a row, NUVO readers have named it their favorite spot to listen to punk music — although the adventurous bookers get into all kinds of other genres, too. The stage setup is great for getting close to the bands, and the small bar scene is full of music mementos and wacky decorations. Melody Inn’s commit-

Niko’s Open Stage made the switch from Claude and Annie’s to Alley’s Alehouse — and you wonderful open mic-ers very loyally followed him over. All kinds of performers can get onstage at Niko’s Open Stage. Yup, that means singer-songwriters, kids with guitars they got for Christmas, comedians, magicians and anyone else who has a trick, tip or song to share. After the open mic-ers while away their 20-30 minutes apiece, the stage is open for an improv jam. You picked it as your favorite place to open mic in all of Indy — and that’s saying something, because this city is chock-full of open mics. alleysalehouse.com 2nd: Ralph and Ava’s 3rd: Books N Brews

Nicky Blaine’s

It doesn’t get much more classic than a martini and a cigar in a dark lounge around tables with a group of friends. Sitting in the basement bar, it’s easy to look through the smoky room and imagine that gentleman at the bar is James Bond hitting on Vesper Lynd, not too subtly. “A medium dry martini, lemon peel. Shaken, not stirred.” nickyblaines.com

Nicky’s has served cigars to this city for years and it still continues to keep one of the best humidors and selections in the city. The ambience is a major plus; when you think of cigars, most people’s minds either go to Hemingway and Havana or to lounge singers, Frankie, Dino, Sammy and a dark smoky room. Nicky’s is the latter, and that is why it holds a special place in our hearts. nickyblaines.com

The Monkey’s Tale loves to tout that they were featured as NUVO’s number one place to sing in Indianapolis the last time we went around and quantified the karaoke scene. And they’ve done it again! They’re definitely the coziest, tucked away off the main Broad Ripple strip, and they attract a lively crowd of Indy’s best singers. Their Monkey Idol contest is still in full swing, where for a $3 entry you can slug it out to win $100 and an entry for the February Main Event contest worth $1,000. But bring your A-game, because the singers here come to play. If contests aren’t your thing, they have open karaoke on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, along with Karaoke Wheel of Fortune on Wednesdays: Spin the wheel, find your genre! Drinks are reasonably priced by Broad Ripple standards, and they have daily drink specials. Most nights start at 10 p.m., and they stay open well into the wee hours. themonkeystale.net 2nd: Metro 3rd: Downtown Olly’s

BEST TEQUILA BAR Bakersfield on Mass Ave.

BEST BARTENDER

It was a close one this year, but Bakersfield came out on top, and it’s undoubtedly due to their extensive tequila list. But, it also definitely has to do with those margaritas. MUSIC and NIGHTLIFE Best of Indy BEST DIVE BAR

Manley’s Irish Mutt

Alley Cat

This neighborhood Irish bar is pretty much considered a second home to many people on Indy’s Eastside. It’s one of a rare breed of bars that has served its neighborhood from generation to generation and has gained a loyal client list. The fact that the kitchen cooks up one of the best breaded tenderloins in the city, as well as nearly perfect fish and chips, puts it at the top of this list.

People throw the name “dive bar” around a lot, usually at places that are actually just neighborhood bars. That’s all fine and dandy, but Alley Cat is closer to a dive bar than nearly any you’ve been to in the city, especially the back bar. The fact that you literally walk through an alleyway to get there makes it seem that much more dive-y. It’s perfect for a beer and a shot and maybe some pool and picking some tunes on the jukebox. But if you care about good cocktails, ask Corey; he’s in the top tier of bartenders in the city.

If you’re going to do trivia in Indy, why not answer questions in between bites of scotch eggs? Get you a trivia place that can do both. (Both being “cook a perfect scotch egg” and “offer compelling, interesting trivia at regular intervals.”) redliongroghouse.com

ARIES (March 21-April 19): A study published in the peer-reviewed *Communications Research* suggests that only 28 percent of us realize when someone is flirting with us. I hope that figure won’t apply to you Aries in the coming weeks. According to my analysis of the astrological situation, you will be on the receiving end of more invitations, inquiries, and allurements than usual. The percentage of these that might be worth responding to will also be higher than normal. Not all of them will be obvious, however. So be extra vigilant. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The ancient Greek sage Socrates was a founder of Western philosophy and a seminal champion of critical thinking. And yet he relied on his dreams for crucial information. He was initiated into the esoteric mysteries of love by the prophetess Diotima, and had an intimate relationship with a *daimonion,* a divine spirit. I propose that we make Socrates your patron saint for the next three weeks. Without abandoning your reliance on logic, make a playful effort to draw helpful clues from non-rational sources, too. (P.S.: Socrates drew oracular revelations from sneezes. Please consider that outlandish possibility yourself. Be alert, too, for the secret meanings of coughs, burps, grunts, mumbles, and yawns.) GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The Helper Experiment, Part One: Close your eyes and imagine that you are in the company of a kind, attentive helper -- a person, animal, ancestral spirit, or angel that you either know well or haven’t met yet. Spend at least five minutes visualizing a scene in which this ally aids you in fulfilling a particular goal. The Helper Experiment, Part Two: Repeat this exercise every day for the next seven days. Each time, visualize your helper making your life better in some specific way. Now here’s my prediction: Carrying out The Helper Experiment will attract actual support into your real life. CANCER (June 21-July 22): New rules: 1. It’s unimaginable and impossible for you to be obsessed with anything or anyone that’s no good for you. 2. It’s unimaginable and impossible for you to sabotage your stability by indulging in unwarranted fear. 3. It’s imaginable and possible for you to remember the most crucial thing you have forgotten. 4. It’s imaginable and possible for you to replace debilitating self-pity with invigorating self-love and healthy self-care. 5. It’s imaginable and possible for you to discover a new mother lode of emotional strength. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): It’s swing-swirl-spiral time, Leo. It’s ripple-sway-flutter time and flow-gush-gyrate time and jive-jiggle-juggle time. So I trust you will not indulge in fruitless yearnings for unswerving progress and rock-solid evidence. If your path is not twisty and tricky, it’s probably the wrong path. If your heart isn’t teased and tickled into shedding its dependable formulas, it might be an overly hard heart. Be an improvisational curiosity-seeker. Be a principled player of unpredictable games. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Some English-speaking astronomers use the humorous slang term “meteor-wrong.” It refers to a rock that is at first thought to have fallen from the heavens as a meteorite (“meteorright”), but that is ultimately proved to be of terrestrial origin. I suspect there may currently be the metaphorical equivalent of a meteor-wrong in your life. The source of some new arrival or fresh influence is not what it had initially seemed. But that doesn’t have to be a problem. On the contrary. Once you have identified the true nature of the new arrival or fresh influence, it’s likely to be useful and interesting.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Most of us can’t tickle ourselves. Since we have conscious control of our fingers, we know we can stop any time. Without the element of uncertainty, our squirm reflex doesn’t kick in. But I’m wondering if you might get a temporary exemption from this rule in the coming weeks. I say this because the astrological omens suggest you will have an extraordinary capacity to surprise yourself. Novel impulses will be rising up in you on a regular basis. Unpredictability and spontaneity will be your specialties. Have fun doing what you don’t usually do! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): During the final ten weeks of 2016, your physical and mental health will flourish in direct proportion to how much outworn and unnecessary stuff you flush out of your life between now and October 25. Here are some suggested tasks: 1. Perform a homemade ritual that will enable you to magically shed at least half of your guilt, remorse, and regret. 2. Put on a festive party hat, gather up all the clutter and junk from your home, and drop it off at a thrift store or the dump. 3. Take a vow that you will do everything in your power to kick your attachment to an influence that’s no damn good for you. 4. Scream nonsense curses at the night sky for as long as it takes to purge your sadness and anger about pain that no longer matters. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A Buddhist monk named Matthieu Ricard had his brain scanned while he meditated. The experiment revealed that the positive emotions whirling around in his gray matter were super-abundant. Various publications thereafter dubbed him “the happiest person in the world.” Since he’s neither egotistical nor fond of the media’s simplistic sound bites, he’s not happy about that title. I hope you won’t have a similar reaction when I predict that you Sagittarians will be the happiest tribe of the zodiac during the next two weeks. For best results, I suggest you cultivate Ricard’s definitions of happiness: “altruism and compassion, inner freedom (so that you are not the slave of your own thoughts), senses of serenity and fulfillment, resilience, as well as a clear and stable mind that does not distort reality too much.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Now is a perfect moment to launch or refine a project that will generate truth, beauty, and justice. Amazingly enough, now is also an excellent time to lunch or refine a long-term master plan that will make you healthy, wealthy, and wise. Is this a coincidence? Not at all. The astrological omens suggest that your drive to be of noble service dovetails well with your drive for personal success. For the foreseeable future, unselfish goals are well-aligned with selfish goals. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Has your world become at least 20 percent larger since September 1? Has your generosity grown to near-heroic proportions? Have your eyes beheld healing sights that were previously invisible to you? Have you lost at least two of your excuses for tolerating scrawny expectations? Are you awash in the desire to grant forgiveness and amnesty? If you can’t answer yes to at least two of those questions, Aquarius, it means you’re not fully in harmony with your best possible destiny. So get to work! Attune yourself to the cosmic tendencies! And if you are indeed reaping the benefits I mentioned, congratulations -- and prepare for even further expansions and liberations.. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Some astrologers dwell on your tribe’s phobias. They assume that you Pisceans are perversely drawn to fear; that you are addicted to the strong feelings it generates. In an effort to correct this distorted view, and in accordance with current astrological omens, I hereby declare the coming weeks to be a Golden Age for Your Trust in Life. It will be prime time to exult in everything that evokes your joy and excitement. I suggest you make a list of these glories, and keep adding new items to the list every day. Here’s another way to celebrate the Golden Age: Discover and explore previously unknown sources of joy and excitement.

Homework: Happiness, that elusive beast, may need to be tracked through the bushes before capture. What’s your game plan for hunting down happiness? Truthrooster@gmail.com NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER // 10.12.16 - 10.19.16 // CLASSIFIEDS 63
