ell, I guess it’s dark at, like, 6 p.m. now and there are endless droves of Han Solo cosplayers walking along with mintysmelling, red cups of coffee in their fingerless-gloved hands. Winter is here. NEW HOT SPOTS TO WARM YOU UP THIS WINTER

4 WINTER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

1 // STAY HEALTHY & SIP COFFEE ARTIE’S ON CENTRAL We’re sad to share that Artie from Artie’s passed away earlier this month unexpectedly. There is no better time than right now to support his businesses in order to help out his wife and two small children in their time of need. This new cafe in Fall Creek Place is a brick and mortar location from the peeps behind Artie’s Paleo on the Go. Offering coffee drinks, pastries, kombucha, fresh, tasty juices and more it’s a great place for an early morning or midday stop. As with Artie’s other venture, there are healthy, paleo, vegetarian and vegan ready-made meals to grab, go and get fit. 2 // A FIESTA FOR YOUR TASTE BUDS FESTIVA When Tinker Street announced this Mexican restaurant we couldn’t have been more excited and after multiple visits we’re still pumped about this place. The food is fantastic and more high-minded than your average Mexican restaurant (nothing wrong with arroz con pollo and texas fajitas, though). The space is welcoming and to top it all off the bar program is stellar with Jason Foust heading it all up and doling out some of the best tequila and mezcal cocktails around.

3 // EAT PIZZA LIKE YOU’RE JOE PESCI GOODFELLAS PIZZA This new pizzeria came on the scene earlier this year and blew people away. Not only are the pizzas phenomenal and topped with quality, interesting ingredients, but the Mass Ave location is an absolutely awesome spot for a night out, especially if you’re looking for drinks (they have a swanky, slightly hidden, well-stocked bar to sip at). The Broad Ripple location is a little smaller, but the pizza is still the same and it’s reliable enough to be a made man. 4 // YUMMY NUMMY CHICKEN IN YOUR TUMMY HAPPY CHICKEN The chicken here makes us happy. The chicken bowls make us happy. The chicken wings make us happy. The sides make us happy. The service makes us happy. Even the shrimp tacos make us happy. If you want to be happy, do yourself a favor and get to Happy Chicken and eat like there’s no tomorrow. 5 // TRAVEL TO THE STREETS OF THAILAND PHAYA THAI STREET FOOD, FORT HARRISON This fast-casual Thai spot has been a big hit since it opened on the city’s Near Eastside. It takes its name pretty serious and focuses on Thai street food, which anyone who has been to Thailand will know that means real

Thai food. It is ready when you arrive and makes for the perfect lunch stop. We’re all about the pork belly stew, but the red curry is pretty much fire in a bowl (both in heat and flavor). 6 // TREAT YO’ SELF, YOU SO FANCY PROVISION Maybe one of the most high-class restaurants to hit the Indy food scene in quite a while this new spot from Cunningham Restaurant Group (Mesh, Union 50, Livery, etc.) is housed in the new Ironworks Hotel. The ambience itself pulls you in and it is easy to see no expenses were spared in creating the space. The menu is seasonal so it will be continuously changing, but each dish is meticulously thought out and beautifully plated. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate a major event this should quickly become your go to. 7 // MEAT AND BEER AND BEER AND MEAT OCA A marriage of two fantastic Indianapolis companies, this new eatery located in Sun King Brewing’s Downtown location brings together Sun King’s ever-growing portfolio of local craft beers and the original kings of charcuterie, Smoking Goose. The menu isn’t massive, but every single dish is a winner for those meat-lovers out there, from the unbelievable and unique Berkshire pork and octopus sausage to the knack garnie, even the pretzels and pimento beer cheese, everything on the menu is fantastic. 8 // WHISKEY KEEPS YA FEELIN’ FRISKY WEST FORK WHISKEY Whiskey. Whiskey. Get your whiskey here. After years of working out of a North-

side building and having no tasting room for patrons, the team behind West Fork Whiskey were able to find a new home in Downtown Indy’s Kennedy King neighborhood. The industrial chic space offers a bar top where you can snag $8 whiskey cocktails while sitting in the middle of an operational distillery. They also serve whiskey by the ounce and with three 100% Indiana-made whiskeys already available and three more on the way, there’s plenty to go around. 9 // BROAD RIPPLE, IT’S NOT JUST FOR DRUNK PEOPLE! THE VANGUARD When the popular Broad Ripple spot Usual Suspects closed, no one quite knew what would take over its space. Then The Vanguard opened and surprised us all with a greater focus on quality food while keeping a top-notch bar program. The bar and kitchen are currently operated by the duo behind the sadly closed LongBranch, Adam Ditter and Steve Simon and they have elevated it to a higher standard than is seen pretty much anywhere else in Broad Ripple. If you haven’t made your way there yet, get there now and be ready for a wonderful meal. 10 // HAPPY, HAPPY, JOY, JOY HAPPY BREWING CO. Okay, it’s not open yet. But, I’m literally looking out the window right now at Happy Brewing’s facade. I’m trying out that whole The Secret thing and putting my goals into the universe so they will open and I can leave work, walk to a brewery, drink a beer and be happy.

6 WINTER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

1 // SPICE UP YOUR LIFE ARTISANO’S OILS & SPICES Anyone you know who spends hours diving through cookbook after cookbook will know the importance of quality spices. Those containers you buy at Meijer are convenient, but take one sniff of oregano, curry, pink peppercorns, etc. from Artisano’s and you will realize just how bland your food has been for your whole life. Add to that their incredible selection of oils and vinegars and this is a food-lover’s paradise. 2 // DICE, SLICE, MINCE, JULIENNE AND DICE ASH BLAEDS Do you have a friend, family-member, coworker, acquaintance that loves cooking more than anything? Well, anyone who regularly makes meals will know that the most important tool in the kitchen is a knife, a good knife. Aric Geesamen makes the best blades around out of his shop (his garage) in McCordsville. Each knife is handcrafted over hours and hours and never have we used a better or sharper knife. Plus, these are just absolutely beautiful. Order a custom one, or let Aric run wild, no matter which you choose the end product will be a masterpiece.

3 // YOU HEARD ‘BOUT THIS MUSTARD? BATCH NO. 2 You never knew you were mustarding and ketchuping so wrong until you get a taste of Batch No. 2 and realize this is ketchup and mustard done right. Once you get a taste you’ll want to share it with everyone and luckily you can by getting some jars of this heavenly dip for anyone. While you could go with the traditional whole grain mustard, do yourself a favor and get the blackened cajun mustard. Tomato ketchup is good and all, but the curry ketchup is where it’s at. Add those to your Turchetti’s hot dogs and make your life better. 4 // EMBRACE YOUR INNER JULIA CHILD COOKING CLASS R2GO Before Regina Mehallick closed shop on her Mass Ave spot R Bistro she was dishing out some of the best food in this city and had been for years. Now she runs R2GO and you can learn to cook from her and some of her former employees, including Erin Kem, who is now at Cannon Ball Brewing. The classes vary in style, teacher and required level of skill, beginners who have never chopped an onion or even boiled water, all the way to experience home cooks who could handle themselves in a kitchen. It’s a perfect gift to give to someone who is interested in cooking, or if you want to join them and learn to cook together it can be a great date night.

A HANDMADE KNIFE FROM ASH BLAEDS IS PERFECT FOR YOUR FOODIE FRIENDS // PHOTO BY ASH BLAEDS

5 // DON’T BE BORED, GET A CUTTING BOARD DICKINSON WOODWORKING If the knife is the most important tool in the kitchen then a cutting board would be right there with it due to the fact that you need a safe spot to do all your slicing, dicing and chopping. Aaron Dickinson crafts handmade, unique and beautiful cutting boards out of locally sourced wood and each one is truly a functional work of art. Anyone who loves knives will let you know that you should only be using wood cutting boards if you don’t want to risk damaging your precious knives. They also produce wooden coffee mugs and cooking utensils to outfit your whole kitchen.

8 // I GOTTA NICKEL, I GOT NICKEL INDIANA PICKLE CO. It may seem like a weird thing to give someone pickles as a gift, but as a picklelover, I have to say I would scream like a little kid getting his new Nintendo SNES if I got a couple jars of these pickles. (Plus, don’t forget that German pastime of putting a pickle in a Christmas tree.) While each of their pickle offerings features a local alcoholic beverage, the finished product is alcohol-free and while it’s nice to keep a jar of classic pickle chips — which highlight Sun King’s Wee Mac — around to do a West Fork Colonel and pickle back, the Dragon Tails (picked carrots) are the perfect Bloody Mary accoutrement.

6 // WE ARE FARMERS…(MADE YOU SING) FARM CSA We could choose one farm and tell you to get their CSA — bunches of fresh, Indiana grown produce sent to you throughout the growing season — but we would be doing you a disservice because there are so many farms around the entire state of Indiana that offer CSAs and these farms rely on them to continue producing the food that they grow. We suggest you and your friends or family getting CSAs from different farms around the city to get a variety of foods and sharing them with one another. It truly opens up your kitchen to a wonderful new world of cooking.

9 // MEET CHRIS P. BACON AND SAUL SAGE SMOKING GOOSE BACON AND SAUSAGE CLASS Anyone who loves meat — always the one manning the grill during summer barbecues, stoking the fire while camping to get it just the right temperature for makin’ bacon — will love this as a gift. Go inside the sausage factory and learn the art of making sausages (it’s a lot harder than you’d think) and exactly what it takes to turn pork belly into that lovely, crispy, flavorful bacon. Flat12 is across the street, so once the class is done they can head over and grab some beer and give into the Ron Swanson side of life.

7 // YOU’VE GOT THE BEARD NOW MAKE SOME BEER GREAT FERMENTATIONS GIFT CARD Have someone in your family that loves beer? Your dad travels all around and tastes an IPA at each brewery in Indy? Your sister bought one of the plastic DIY beer kits and got disheartened by the finished product? Steer them to Great Fermentations and get them brewing some quality beer. The people here are crazily knowledgeable about the brewing process and they even have preset brewing setups to get you started. You could also opt-in to buying a beginner’s brewing class. No matter what you do just remember that in the end, you get to be the beer taster, so it’s a win-win situation.

10 // WHAT’S IN YOUR CUP? TINKER COFFEE CUPPING CLASSES Coffee is what keeps many of us waking up and going to work every morning. It is the closest thing we have to a magic elixir where we drink it and it makes us feel more alive and awake. The cupping classes at Tinker Coffee get us up-close-and-personal with the minute differences in different beans from around the world. You’ll go in knowing you love coffee, you’ll leave knowing which country’s coffee beans you like most, the best way to drink them and more than you ever thought you could know.

GALLERY PASTRY SHOP MAKES BETTER PASTRIES THAN YOU AND THAT’S OKAY //

PLACES TO SHOP FOR HOLIDAY MEALS INSTEAD OF COOKING ALL DAY

1 // LEAVE THE BAKING TO THE PROS GALLERY PASTRY SHOP Sure, you could spend the whole day kneading, proofing and blending and all the other words they use on the Great British Bake Off, but who wants to do that when you could hop in your car, walk into a beautiful, light room and get the best damn pastries you’ve ever put in your mouth. Order ahead, bring some home, and let your family fall in love with you — not for your baking skills — but for knowing such amazing pastries exist in our city. 2 // FUCK BUTTERBALL GOOSE THE MARKET Do yourself a favor and get a real turkey that will blow your family away. Goose is usually known for their pork and beef-based products, but this time of year it’s all about the turkeys. Make sure and order ahead, since these babies go fast. Baked, broiled, fried: no matter which way you prepare it we can guarantee you and your loved ones will gobble, gobble it up. 3 // THIS AIN’T NO AUNTIE ANNE’S MY PRETTY LITTLE PRETZEL These aren’t your everyday pretzels. Order a batch of these babies as a snack to go along with your holiday meals and your guests will think you’re some kind of wizard. With flavors ranging from Ancho Glad You Tried me 8 WINTER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

(Sugar scrub with a custom spice blend of cinnamon, ancho, paprika, cayenne coated over dark chocolate) to Pumpkin Spice Latte (sugar pumpkin rub with white chocolate) they have nearly 20 options to choose from. The best part, all you have to do is order it online and they do the rest. 4 // THIS LITTLE PIGGY WENT TO THE MARKET OLD MAJOR MARKET When your family is staying with you for the holidays you’re going to need to make some breakfast for everybody and, if you’re going to Goose for the turkey, you’re going to Old Major for the bacon and sausages. They offer nine different types of bacon (including beef and lamb bacon) and even more sausages. While your standard biscuits and gravy are enjoyable, add some ghost pepper garlic sausage or Korean gochujang sausage into the mix to spice it up a little bit, spicy is always good on a cold winter’s morn. 5 // OODLES OF NOODLES NICOLE-TAYLOR’S PASTA There is something about Italian food that feels so holiday. It’s filling and warming and is made to go along with some wine. If you want to impress with your pasta cooking skills, there is no better place to start than with Nicole-Taylor’s. Their of-

ferings of various, fresh pasta styles and already made pasta sauces make it that much easier to make a wonderful dish for a holiday meal. And while traditional pasta is great, we suggest going for a gnocchi-based dish. First off, their gnocchi is insanely good and if you prepare it with some tomato sauce and braised pork, you will have the perfect holiday meal. 6 // NO, NOT THAT KINDA POT POTS & PANS No, they don’t sell cooking ware, they sell incredible, fresh pies. Which, during the holidays, may be the only dessert you serve because nothing feels more like the holidays than a pumpkin pie, well, maybe pecan pie; either way, they have both of those and much more. Plus, if you’re looking for that hearty, savory, warming chicken pot pie (or even a beef and mushroom pie), they have you covered. Pies, pies, get your pies, sweet or savory, all you need is an oven! 7 // IS EGG NOGGIN ANOTHER WAY TO SAY EGG HEAD? TRADER’S POINT CREAMERY Yes, you can get cheese here to add to your charcuterie platter. Yes, the cheese will be wonderful, your guests will swoon over the Fleur de la Terre, Hillside Bloom and Red Barn, but the real reason you’re here is for that wonderful wintertime beverage: egg nog. Grab a bottle or ten fill up the punch bowl, add some whiskey, rum, or SoCo (or not) and bring out those Wally World moose glasses that have been sitting under the bar since last year and drink the night away. 8 // HAM MINUS THE GREEN EGGS AND ANNOYING RHYMES TURCHETTI’S SALUMERIA While the turkey definitely has set itself up nicely to be the meat of choice during the holidays, don’t forget about the ham. Turchetti’s City Ham is something of a masterpiece and if you bring it home for the holidays, there’s a good chance your family will be saying, “Turkey, shmurkey,

bring me another slice-a-dat ham!” Better order sooner rather than later. These babies fly out the door in droves, so it’s truly an opportunity to see pigs fly. 9 // VEGANS ARE THANKFUL, TOO WHOLE FOODS Yeah, yeah, yeah. We know, it’s not local. But, it has an important distinction this time of year; the grocery chain offers a full vegan Thanksgiving meal. Which, anyone who is vegan or loves a vegan, will know this is a godsend in a time of year where 99% of the food is meatbased. You can’t expect them to live off shitty, ‘ol cranberry sauce all winter long. The vegan feast includes mustardglazed cauliflower, lentil-mushroom stuffing, “cheesy” rutabaga and potato mash, sauerkraut-roasted rainbow carrots and chocolate toffee mini cake. It’s the perfect way for your vegan friend to feel thankful on Thanksgiving. 10 // INSERT CHEESY JOKE HERE WILDWOOD MARKET While you could have grabbed your cheese at a few of the places above, we suggest heading to Wildwood. Even though the selection maybe isn’t as large, the difference here is every single cheese in this case is fantastic. Plus, they have tons of items all around the shop to add to your holiday meal list. While we try to always promote local products, there is one cheese here that you have to try that you and everyone you know will fall in love with. It’s named brun-uusto and once you heat it up in the oven it’s, maybe, the most wonderful thing about the holidays. They also offer Thanksgiving order options from all over the state, so don’t miss out on the either. IT DOESN’T GET MUCH COMFIER THAN HOTEL TANGO // PHOTO BY KATIE BREDEN

COMFORTABLE SPOTS TO HIDE FROM THE WINTER WEATHER 1 // GOIN’ DOWN SOUTH BAR REV This comfy spot in Greenwood is truly a gem. The low lights, the exposed brick walls, the mild chatter of people around the room all amalgamate into a warm and cozy night to sip on a cool glass of bourbon while enjoying intimate conversation. If you’re looking to add a meal to the experience, all of the food comes from the kitchen in Revery, which is easily one of the best kitchens in the city. If you’re on the city’s Southside and are looking to warm your bones on a winter night, Bar Rev has all you could ever want. 2 // SNUGGLE UP IN THE PUB SNUG BROAD RIPPLE BREWPUB The coziest place in this Broad Ripple staple is aptly titled the pub snug, it’s a self serve area by the bar and it is a nice area to tuck yourself away with a hand-pulled cask beer and one of the brewpubs British style fare like fish and chips or bangers and mash. They specialize in classic English beers whose malt forward profiles truly work like a beer coat against the cold. 3 // A HIDDEN HAVEN CORNERSTONE COFFEE HOUSE Most people know Moe and Johnny’s as a place to drink and get a bite to eat, especially during Butler games, but this little coffee shop and bar is hidden in the back of 10 WINTER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

the place and it’s an incredible spot to tuck in and read, write or chat during the winter. They have a large array of books for you to borrow and read over a cup of coffee, or if you prefer something stronger they have a full bar available as well. If you’re needing some sustenance they also serve the full Moe and Johnny’s menu all day long. 4 // IT’S LIKE ASPEN IN INDY HOTEL TANGO Not only do they make some incredible local spirits that have won multiple awards, but they also happen to have one of the most comfortable tasting rooms you’ll ever find. The handmade stone fireplace is the centerpiece and in the cold winter months there is no better deterrent to the winter winds than sitting fireside and sipping one of the craft cocktails. (It’s especially nice when they have warm drink like spiked apple cider). It’s like relaxing in a ski lodge after a long day on the slopes. 5 // HAPPINESS IS A WARM ROOM IARIA’S There isn’t a spot in this Italian eatery that isn’t unbelievably comfortable. From the lighting to the woodwork to the service everything feels warm, the food is comforting, even the neon lights pull you into a sense of ease. Pull up a seat at the bar and order a drink from Dom or nestle into a table

EVERYTHING ABOUT A MEAL AT PIONEER IS COMFORTABLE // PHOTO BY ABSORB MEDIA

and order the chicken drogato — the spicy, creamy dish will heat you up and leave you feeling happy and at ease, especially if you pair it a nice zinfandel and finish up with some scotch. 6 // THAT’S A SPICY MEATBALL MAMA CAROLLA’S There is something about the old world Italian charm of this place and its food that helps take that coldness out of your bones during the winter. It truly is one of the most romantic places in the city and it definitely lends itself to that romantic idea of winter: the snow and wrapping up in a warm blanket by the fire that films, songs and stories tell us; it helps us forget just how terrible it is to drive in the snow and walk in the snow. Let Mama coddle you into that sense of winter whimsy. 7 // THE KEY TO COMFORT RED KEY TAVERN The Red Key is the quintessential neighborhood drinking hole and its old school charm makes it easily one of the best bars in town. It doesn’t get much better than sitting in one of the well worn chairs and listening to the crooners on the antique jukebox while drinking a beer or two and watching the snow drift down outside. Add to this the always enjoyable and friendly crowd and you’ve got the makings for a warm winters eve. 8 // BEER + SAUSAGE = COZY PIONEER Pioneer is a place that could be on a hundred different lists because it’s so good in so many ways. After years of seeing this space

on Fountain Square boarded up it is nice to be able to walk in on a cold winter night, order a beer, get a massive plate of housemade sausage and enjoy the dark, coziness of the place. If they happen to have a live band that night, even better. 9 // PEPPERMINT AND COFFEE VODKA, NEED WE SAY MORE? TICK TOCK LOUNGE This little neighborhood bar is as classic as they come. During winter they light the place at night with string lights and the crowd is always jovial. The couch in the corner can be a comfortable spot to sip on a beer or cocktail. They always have their in-house infused vodkas to choose from and in the winter it doesn’t get much better than their peppermint or coffee vodka options. It’s hard to describe exactly why it feels so comfy in the winter, but when you step through the door you’ll understand. 10 // FOLK MUSIC AND A FIREPLACE WELLINGTON This little spot in Broad Ripple may just be my favorite bar, especially during the week when it’s slower and quiet. The dark, polished wood details in the small, warm room make this easily one of the most comfortable places to grab a drink in the city. Sit in the window well near the front, order one of their well-made cocktails and enjoy a quiet, convivial night with a few friends by the fireplace. If it is a busier night, I suggest heading downstairs where there is a good chance you’ll find a live folk band playing some tunes to a small crowd.

We want to bring your attention to some of the places and arts organizations that might not be on your radar, but could add value to your gift buying/giving experience this year. As far as book buying is concerned, and book giving, we want to direct your attention to some locally-published authors. Some are very well known (like John Green), some not so much (like Kit Andis). And we’d like you to consider the highlighted poetry collections as a possible antidote to Trumpian Twitter overload. We’ve also got a selection of offbeat movie venues that might work for, say, your slightly offbeat younger brother who likes cross country ballroom dancing. Or maybe Netflix will keep him home with family on Christmas Eve. To top it off, we’ve got a swell selection of event listings, everything from art exhibitions at Tube Factory artspace in Garfield Park to the kosher harmonies of Hooshir, IU Hillel’s a-capella group. Happy Holidays and l’chaim! DAN GROSSMAN ARTS EDITOR DGROSSMAN@NUVO.NET

BOOKS FOR THE HOLIDAY GIFT-GIVING SEASON

1 // THE RELIVE BOX AND OTHER STORIES BY T.C. BOYLE The title story in this 2017 story collection is about a box that can get you to relive your past experiences. And if you had enough of those in the bank, would you shop anywhere else? Would you let your career slide into oblivion? Yet, perhaps we’re already in a similar boat already when it comes to our obsession with smartphones and other devices.Boyle’s take in this story isn’t entirely original (think moviewise Strange Days and Her) but his writing is so fucking good that you just don’t care. The author paid a visit to the Schrott Center for the Arts on Nov. 14, and was the subject of a November NUVO cover story. 2 // LOVE AND GREED IN THE HEARTLAND: THE RICHMOND HILL MURDERS BY ROBERT L. SNOW AND RUSS MCQUAID In this book you will find detailed, methodical reporting and crystal clear writing about the explosion that literally shook the Richmond Hill Community in Southside Indianapolis, took two lives and injured others. It’s a compelling read, shedding light on the crime itself, the twisted love

affair behind it, and the slow but relentless wheels of the court system as they turn towards justice. Available at Bookmamas. 3 // TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN BY JOHN GREEN John Green’s writing has entranced thousands of adoring fans around the world, and two of his films have been made into motion pictures. While his books are classified as Young Adult, he has many adult readers as well. The author lives right here in Indianapolis, where many of his novels are set. (It would be cool to see his movies filmed here, rather than Pittsburgh, just sayin’.). Turtles All the Way Down, which was released in October, is also set in Indianapolis and chronicles a young woman with OCD, on the hunt for a fugitive billionaire. 4 // INDIANA: ACROSS THE LAND BY LEE MANDRELL AND DEEDEE NIEDERHOUSE MANDRELL There’s more than covered bridges in Indiana, but what would a coffee table book of panoramic Indiana photos be without some pics of covered bridges? The Mandrells not only capture images of covered bridges: they capture images of Indiana Dunes, Turkey Run State Park, and Abe Lincoln’s homestead. They also go underground,

NUVO // 2017 // WINTER CITYGUIDE 15

capturing images of Squire Boone Caverns. They also capture images of small town Indiana, but they eschew the urban centers. But, hey, that’s okay…. There’s more to Indiana than Indianapolis. 5 // DAYLILY CALLED IT A DANGEROUS MOMENT BY ALESSANDRA LYNCH What becomes of poetry in the age of the Trumpian Tweet? Such tweets are almost a mockery of poetry, with their lies and accusatory statements in 280 characters or less. Consider that the writer of said tweets himself is on tape bragging of sexual assault, and has been repeatedly accused of it. Sexual assault is an issue that is addressed in Butler University instructor Alessandra Lynch’s 2017 book of poems, buried deep in the stanzas. You will also find here dream imagery, darkened corridors, owls and — just perhaps — passages towards healing. These are not poems that reveal their meaning or their intentions easily, but their doors are not locked, as it were. 6 // INDIANA NOBLE SAD MAN OF THE YEAR POEMS BY STEVE HENN Steve Henn is an Indiana high school teacher whose poems, written in his humorous, conversational style, are influenced by his work and his family life. (His young children contributed the artwork to this tome.) In his previous book, the humor occasionally turned to cynicism and overwhelmed compassion towards his subjects. In this book, however, he is still just as funny... but less jaded. The first poem in the collection, “The Dawning,” ends with these lines: “This is what the world is coming to, I so much want/to believe in this, tell me this is where we start anew.” 7 // DAYS FOR AN OCCASION POEMS 1978 - 2016 I’ve known Kit Andis for more than 20 years. But this Indy resident (who recently moved back into town after

a stint in Tampa, FLA.) had hit his stride writing poetry long before. The dead-on precision of his writing might be the first thing you notice. The often raw subject matter will strike you too: “Guilty,” recalls a childhood incident that took place on the creek bank that James Whitcomb christened “The Old Swimmin’- Hole.” But uber-sentimental Riley fans might want to stay away from Andis’s trip down memory lane, lest their jaws drop through the earth’s crust, hitting China.

MITTENS FROM GLOBAL GIFTS //

8 // RARE: THE MEMORABILIA COLLECTION OF A LIFETIME BY TOM FONTAINE The most authentically German way to party this fall is at the most authentically German spot in town: Mass Ave’s Athenaeum, which hosts a yearly fest celebrating beer, yodeling, wiener dog races and more. 9 // ANY BOOK FROM BOOKMAMAS This Irvington bookstore — a great excuse to visit this funky Eastside community — sells both new and used books that specializes in both new and used books. (You can also check out Indy Vinyl which shares the Bookmamas space.) And if you want your giftee to have as much fun as you do browsing the shelves, buy them a Bookmamas gift certificate for Christmas. 10 // ANY BOOK FROM INDY READS This is a bookstore with a mission, to make Indianapolis 100 percent literate, as they say on their website, promoting and improving the literacy of Hoosiers. They’ve got a great selection of books, both new and used. They even have a rack of books where you can pay what you want and/or choose your own discount, call it what you will. They sell gift cards.

PLACES TO GET A GIFT WITH GUSTO

1 // YELP’S TOTALLY BAZAAR Yelp will come to Central Library — one of my favorite places in town — on Dec. 7. 6:30 - 10:30.It’s free pop-up shopping (though you need to RSVP), and you can eat while you shop. You don’t know what you’re going to find until you go, but why not go if you have to shop for gifts? Central Library is a beautiful place to shop, and there’s 150 vendors, so what do you have to lose? There’s everything from soap for dogs and custom pet portraits to Indiana focused T-shirts to the best stuff of all — food — the stuff that you can stuff your face with.

2 // GLOBAL GIFTS/SILVER IN THE CITY In both places you can get great unique gifts. Silver in the City is the place to go if you want earrings with a unique and/or local twist, say, earrings shaped like the state of Indiana. At Global Gifts, you’ll be checking out unique, handcrafted gifts from all over the world and supporting the nonprofit Global Gifts mission of supporting local communities through their fair trade practices.

3 //STUTZ STARRY NIGHT OPEN HOUSE During this First Friday, Dec. 1 event, you’ll be able to browse the artwork and handicrafts of more than 40 Stutz artists as they open their doors to you. Jewelry, furniture, paintings, furniture; you name it, they’ve got it. Plus, they’ve got the coolest elevators in town. 4 // EMERALD CITY ARTIST RECEPTION/OPEN STUDIO NIGHT AT THE HARRISON CENTER Harrison Center artist Emma Overman’s paintings have rubbed off on my daughter; the characters she draws — including yours truly — all have oval-shaped heads (wider than they are flat). If you buy her paintings, maybe this will happen to your children. If you buy the work of another Harrison Center artist, perhaps something different will happen. Maybe they’ll start painting farm buildings upside down, something you see from time to time in Justin Vining’s landscapes. 5 // YEAR-LONG MEMBERSHIP AT NEWFIELDS We at NUVO believe that there’s still an Indianapolis Museum of Art somewhere at Newfields, buried somewhere behind the branding. So we’re gonna go for it and recommend that you buy a year pass as a Christmas gift to the art lover in your life.Sure the membership will buy you a discount at Winterlights, the outdoor holiday lights-ontrees extravaganza up through January 7. But don’t miss out on the world class French Post-Impressionist paintings from their permanent collection (free for members) because you had too much spiked cider under the glow of a million bulbs. 6 // INDIANAPOLIS ART CENTER Go ahead and buy a Pop-Up class at the Indianapolis Art Center if you want your special someone to sample the wide variety of art instruction the IAC has to offer. Do you know someone who wants to make a Christmas-Tree pendant? They teach that.

7 // INDIANA REPERTORY THEATRE Do you have a friend who’s really into theater? Why not buy them a season ticket package? Coming up on their schedule: A Raisin in the Sun, Appoggiatura, and of course, A Christmas Carol. 8 // TRADE SCHOOL INDY Because Trade School Indy is a nontraditional school, it’s the perfect place to offer a gift, a nontraditional gift, of your skills. What if you, say, are an expert in darning socks? You can give the gift of instruction to your community. You would be paid — in barter. You could list your items you would like to receive from your students. Classes are taught at Rabble Coffee on the Eastside. 9 // A SUBSCRIPTION TO PATTERN MAGAZINE Pattern is much more than a big, colorful fashion magazine, highlighting the hippest and hip-hoppiest goings on in Indy and beyond. According to their website, Pattern is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization “that uses fashion arts to catalyze, and connect communities of creatives, in Indianapolis and in the Midwest. We want to enable creativity, and creative small businesses, to thrive.” 10 // A SUBSCRIPTION TO YOUR GIFTEE’S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER It could be any paper from anywhere in the country. The Boston Globe, The New York Times. It could be from overseas, like the China Daily. You could pay to open up a paywall online for you or a friend so you can browse, say, The Washington Post all you want, after you run out of your free quota of monthly articles. You can also, by the way, do the same thing with NUVO.

While the production is typically a Halloween go-to, audiences can catch this cult classic year-round. 3 // OUT OF THIS WORLD In preparation for the upcoming The Last Jedi, take a stroll down memory lane with Rogue One. As the prequel that we didn’t know we needed, the 2016 film takes place between Episode III and Episode IV, explaining how the Death Star was created-and sabotaged. With great performances by Ben Mendelsohn (who has never given a bad performance) as a caped-villain and Mads Mikkelsen as an anti-hero, this is sure to help any Star Wars fan get pumped for the next installment, which will hit theaters in December.

This holiday season, the venue is putting a classic twist on an already classic story. Frank Capra’s 1946 Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life was reimagined by the theatre as a radio special. Using props such as cheerleader pom-poms to imitate rustling bushes and an antique horn to mark the arrival of taxi cabs, the Artcraft Theatre is bringing this “classic slice of Americana” back for a second year, on Tues. Dec. 5. 8 // NOW STREAMING... Within their vast collection of films available to stream, Netflix is holding it down with solid documentaries. ave you already made your New Year’s Eve plans? More importantly, have you made a New Year’s Eve wish yet? (Yes, this is a thing.) Here is our New Year’s Eve wish: we want Indy venues to decide if they’re celebrating New Year’s Eve 2017 or New Year’s Eve 2018. Yes, every year, venues title their events variously as celebrating the year before or the year after. It’s damn confusing! What isn’t confusing is our gigantic list of concerts coming up in the Circle City. Yep, there’s a lot to do in Indy this winter. We’re celebrating the spirit of giving in each section of this CityGuide this year, so we’ve picked a batch of hot tickets to purchase for your significant other, favorite friend or mailwoman. And maybe your New Year’s Wish will come true and they’ll take you along to the show.

I

t’s hard to believe that winter is already here, but it is, and there’s no stopping the colder temps from arriving. At least things are heating up on hard courts around the state. The college basketball season is underway, with plenty of storylines from South Bend to Bloomington, the Pacers are a pleasant surprise and the Globetrotters return to the Hoosier state in early 2018. Football season wraps up with some big games in the Circle City and the Fuel hope to put their past season’s poor performance on ice. To make your life a tad bit easier, I’ve selected ten events that will be well worth the price of entry, and also included full season schedules in case you drink too much egg nog and can’t make it off the couch. TICKETS TO SLIP INTO A STOCKING 1 // IHSAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS NOVEMBER 24-25 A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a lot of high school athletes is also a great experience for fans, unless you’re a parent sitting on the edge of your seat yelling at the referees that they missed a holding call. Six games take place over the course of two days, with session tickets getting you access to all the games that day. 2 // BIG TEN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP DECEMBER 2 Neither Indiana nor Purdue have participated in this neutral field — yet not so neutral field for Indiana teams — championship game since its inception in 2011, and this year won’t be any different. With abysmal conference records, both the Hoosiers and Boilermakers will be watching from home. Despite that, the Big Ten as a conference is extremely close talent wise this year, so expect a nail biter from the two teams that make it to Lucas Oil. 3 // INDIANA PACERS V. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER DECEMBER 13 Paul George returns to Indianapolis for the first time since leaving for Oklahoma City in the offseason. George’s departure was the talk of the town. Some fans were angry with how George and company handled the situation. Others thought the Pacers could’ve got more in return. But now the Victor Oladipo/Myles Turner era is officially underway. Will fans boo George? Will he get a standing ovation? Get yourself to Bankers Life and find out in person. 4 // INDY FUEL V. QUAD CITY MALLARDS DECEMBER 14 All Fuel games are great family entertainment, but this one, this one is a can’t miss. Why? Because it’s all you can eat night

at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Enjoy unlimited hot dogs, burgers, popcorn, and nachos, all while watching players crush one another into the boards and fire pucks at a sitting duck known as a goalie. 5 // INDIANA HOOSIERS V. NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH DECEMBER 16 Out goes Tom Crean, in comes Archie Miller. The Hoosiers struggled under the former, never making it past the Sweet Sixteen during his 9-year tenure. The latter brings renewed hope to the rowdy students that will camp outside Assembly Hall for front row seats. Meanwhile, The Fighting Irish are ranked in the preseason poll and might be the country’s most underrated squad. I will miss the weekly discussion on whether the Hoosiers should fire Crean or resign him for another seven years, though. 6 // BUTLER BULLDOGS V. PURDUE BOILERMAKERS DECEMBER 16 The second game of the Crossroads Classic, a terrific idea I must add, follows a similar theme as the first. Butler has a new coach — LaVall Jordan — and Purdue is ranked in the preseason poll. If you’re a fan of basketball, you’ll want to attend one of these games. 7 // INDIANAPOLIS COLTS V. HOUSTON TEXANS DECEMBER 31 It’s been a disappointing season, to say the least. Star quarterback Andrew Luck won’t see a single snap due to his ongoing recovery from shoulder surgery. Promising rookie Malik Hooker was also lost for the year due to injury. And the Colts will most certainly be eliminated from the playoff picture come

the final game of the season. But ticket prices should be rather cheap, and it is your final chance to see the guys play before another nine months of no football. 8 // CHEERS TO NEW YEARS 5K JANUARY 1 Get your one 5K out of the way early this year. All joking aside, start 2018 off right by burning all those calories you took in from champagne the night before. Feel better already, right? That is until you finish this race and receive your free pint at Big Lug. Go big or go home. 9 // HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS V. WASHINGTON GENERALS JANUARY 15 It is physically impossible to sit through an entire Globetrotters game and not burst out laughing at least once. They make the game fun, in every aspect of the word. Popcorn will make its way into the crowd. They’ll do their signature weave. A kid will get his 15 seconds of fame on the court. It’s a great experience for both children and adults. 10 // MONSTER JAM FEBRUARY 10 It’s not everyday you get to see oversized trucks do flips, barrel rolls and run over other cars and trucks.
