Because really, there’s no better place to be during these warm summer months. Spending your summer days under a shady tree in a park on a picnic with a book in hand or listening to your favorite podcast is always lovely, and it’s even better when you don’t have to worry about cooking your own meal. Luckily Indy has plenty of places to grab delicious food to go. Indy’s restaurant scene is perennially on the move, and we’ve had a recent conflation of local spots getting “outside” their comfort zones and bringing some new exciting dining options for us. Step outside the box with them. And finally, we’ve rounded up those patios where we all love to spend summer evenings. Can you tell we’re so ready for summer yet?

ONE BITE OF A BATALI AND YOU’LL NEVER MAKE YOURSELF A PICNIC SANDWICH AGAIN //

ten

PLACES TO STOP WHEN YOU WANT MORE THAN A SLICK MEAT SANDWICH ON THAT PICNIC

1 // FOR SEAFOOD ON THE GO CHEF OYA’S THE TRAP, MARTINDALE/BRIGHTWOOD, $$ The newest spot on this list, Chef Oya is bringing #DeliciouslyDope seafood to an underserved area of the city. While seafood may not be your typical picnic fare, once you get a bite of those loaded crab legs and shrimp, with Chef Oya’s buttah and signature seasoning, you’ll be back for every picinc. 2 // FOR WHEN YOU WANT THE SAMMIE TO COME TO YOU CLUSTERTRUCK, ANYWHERE DOWNTOWN, $$ Head to one of the many parks Downtown and have these guys deliver a meal straight to you. It will take no time at all and be hot and ready and way better than Little Caesar’s. In the heart of the city, there is no better delivery option available with a menu that covers everything from burgers and wings to tacos and pho. 3 // FOR WOOING YOUR LECHON-LOVING LOVER DON JUAN PERUVIAN SANDWICHES, BEECH GROVE, $ Peruvian cuisine is hard to come by in Indianapolis, so I was excited when I learned about this new little family-owned sandwich spot on the city’s Southeast side. They are quickly becoming well-known for their friendly service and their incredibly flavorful lechon and lomo saltado sandwiches. Put those in your picnic basket and be happy we don’t have bears in Indy, because nothing on Earth can resist lomo saltado. 4 // FOR MEAT ON MEAT ON MEAT GOOSE THE MARKET, FALL CREEK PLACE, $$ With a Batali in your hand it doesn’t matter where you’re picnicking — it’s going to be 6 SUMMER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

one of the best times of your life. The fact that you can swing downstairs to Enoteca and grab a bottle of wine to accompany you or next door to The Koelschip for some a six pack or growler of Central State just means that your day is about to get a whole lot better. 5 // FOR A FULL-ON MEAL JAMAICAN REGGAE GRILL, CARMEL, $ This is the perfect meal after a long hike to refuel and it’s fucking delicious. The jerk chicken is the perfect amount of heat and the rice, beans and veggies will give you a well-rounded meal to help replenish all those calories you just worked off. The fried plantains, well, they’re just damn good while you’re lying down and relaxing on that nice big picnic blanket. 6 // FOR VEGANS ON THE GO POGUE’S RUN GROCER, BROOKSIDE, $ Vegans go on picnics too and Pogue’s Run has plenty of veggie options for sandwiches to grab on the go. And these aren’t your typical vegan options — buy a Disheveled James, which is a vegan version of a Sloppy Joe, or the Rambo, the vegan answer to a reuben. Since it’s a grocer you can also grab some fresh veggies, fruits, chips, salsa, beer, wine; the list goes on. 7 // FOR GOURMET AMERICAN ON THE GO R2GO, CHATHAM ARCH, $$ When Regina Mehallick closed R Bistro, it brought tears to the eyes of many Hoosiers. But R2GO should turn those frowns upside down with Regina still pumping out delicious food that you can take on the road (the name says it all), like brussels sprout salad, chicken pot pie, an incredible French peasant soup, and one of the best meatball subs you’ll ever have.

8 // FOR WRAPS DONE RIGHT SUBITO, MILE SQUARE, $ This place is built for you to eat outside since they have no tables. Classic lunch sandwich offerings like Cubans and chicken Caesar wraps are on the menu which are great for picnics, but if you’re doing it right, you’ll make sure and get that famous lobster bisque as a side. 9 // FOOD FIESTA TAQUERIA ZAMORITAS, CONCORD, $ If you’re heading out for a picnic by White River, swing into this Mexican joint on the Westside and get possibly the best tacos in the city. There’s not much better in life than perfectly seasoned steak, onions and cilantro on a corn tortilla; if you can enjoy it in a scenic spot with a Mexican Coke, even better. It may be too hot out, but on a milder day a bowl of spicy, yummy menudo is perfection. 10 // FOR A SINGLE PERFECT SANDWICH WILDWOOD MARKET, FOUNTAIN SQUARE, $$ Their offering of a new sandwich every day is one of the greatest things that has happened to lunch in Indianapolis. You won’t find more creative and original sandwiches around the city, plus Wildwood has two Circle City Soups every day. And they’re moments away from Garfield Park, which is a picnic haven.

THE NEW ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFET IS JUST ONE MORE REASON TO LOVE LONGBRANCH //

3 // NEW BREWS IMA BEER GARDEN, IMA, $$ The IMA is typically known for, well, the art, which shouldn’t come as a shock. It’s also known for its event series like the Summer Nights Film Series and for its expansive grounds, which are perfect for a summer afternoon walk. Now visitors can enjoy that walk with a wine or beer in hand from the beer garden. It’s a new addition to the museum and it makes great use of the old greenhouse.

SPOTS GETTING OUTSIDE THEIR COMFORT ZONES

1 // NEW FRIED TREATS CRISPY BIRD, MERIDIAN KESSLER, The restaurants under the Patachou umbrella are known for serving relatively healthy options, but Crispy Bird is heading in an opposite direction with fried chicken. Construction recently started at the loca-

time, take a moment to step into Bar One Fourteen, a new microbar tucked into the space next to Napolese on 49th. It is being run by chef David Hoover, the son of Patachou Foundation’s President Martha Hoover.

tion at 49th and Penn which means we can expect delicious fried chicken soon ... 2 // A NEW MICROBAR BAR ONE FOURTEEN, MERIDIAN KESSLER, $$$ … And speaking of Patachou, in the mean-

4 // NEW BRUNCH LONGBRANCH, HERRON-MORTON PLACE, $$ This new restaurant from the family behind Shoefly Public House touts itself as “inauthentic Asian street food” and has been a hit since opening earlier this year. They now offer a Sunday all-you-can-eat buffet and from all accounts it’s a thing of magic and you need to get there and try it out now. 5 // NEW BRISKET ROOSTER’S KITCHEN, CHATHAM ARCH, $$ Since it opened, it has been known for its

mac and cheese. But with some new menu additions there’s a new popular kid in town and his name is Brisket Melt, this eatery is now even better. They’ve also added brunch to the menu with a build-your-own hash and a monte cristo. You can now wash down all your meals with Circle City Kombucha which is on tap for the first time. 6 // NEW LUNCH ROOK, HOLY ROSARY, $$ Since moving into its new location, Rook has quickly become one of the most well-loved dinner spots in Indy. Now they’re shooting for that lunch crowd with a new lunch menu that includes some new sandwiches like a lobster roll, and some throwbacks to the original concept like a daily banh mi offering and the best hot dog to ever walk the face of the Earth, the Rook Dog. 7 // NEW SPIRITS SUN KING DISTILLERY, CARMEL, TBD It isn’t quite ready yet, but we’re still looking forward to what Indy’s brewing royalty will bring to the table with its craft distillery that is set to come to Carmel in the near future. The $5 million dollar, 15,000 square foot facility will be headed up by Sun King’s cofounder Dave Colt. 8 // NEW EVERYTHING STELLA, CHATHAM ARCH, $$ Neal Brown is known for his pizza at Pizzology and his cocktails at Libertine, but with his new concept that just recently opened on Mass Ave, he is tackling an entirely new world of cuisine from Southern

Europe. Stella also has the distinction of having a wood-fired oven where the team is baking all of its own bread, a feat which Brown has never attempted before. 9 // A NEW PART OF THE WORLD THE OWNER’S WIFE, CHATHAM ARCH, $$ When Shannon Stone and Ted Miller opened Brugge Brasserie in 2006, they introduced the culinary world of Belgium to Indianapolis. Now with their new spot just off Mass Ave they have done it again by bringing conservas to our fair city. Conservas are a long-time popular snack from Spain and are fresh seafood like octopus or laughing bird shrimp, which are canned with seasonings at just the right moment for maximum freshness. They are then served in different styles like vera cruz, which adds green olives, capers, cilantro, oregano and fried potatoes to the mix. It’s a truly new experience for our city, and one you don’t want to miss. 10 // NEW LIBATIONS GARDEN PARTY, STORES AND RESTAURANTS AROUND THE CITY, $ This hard soda concept is the brainchild of the same woman that brought us Hoosier Mama Bloody Mary Mix. Erin Edds left Hoosier Mama in the hands of her former business and dove into the up-and-coming world of hard soda with her husband Stephen Edds. The drink comes in two flavors, Ruby and Violet and don’t think of it as a frou-frou drink. This soda packs a punch at eight percent alcohol, so be careful or you’ll end your garden party by puking in the tulips.

PATIOS TO ENJOY THE SUMMER SUN

1 // A SECRET GARDEN BLACK MARKET Anytime I have the pleasure of eating on Black Market’s patio I always feel like I’ve found a little secret garden. It feels like something out of a movie with its string 8 SUMMER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

lights and the climbing plants covering the pergola. And while a patio is always nice, the thing that keeps you coming back here is the quality of the food, drinks and staff; all of which have been some of the best in the city since it opened.

2 // A VIRGINIA AVENUE PERCH BLUEBEARD While the interior of Bluebeard is a fun homage to Vonnegut, on a summer’s eve it’s always nice to sit out on the patio with a group of friends, listen to the subtle din of conversations and cars passing by on Virginia Ave, share plates of whatever chef Abbi Merriss has concocted for the week and chat over a bottle of wine or two, or cocktails if you prefer. 3 // A DOG-FRIENDLY OASIS CANAL BISTRO Like the name says, it’s on the canal and it’s a Mediterranean restaurant. The dog-friendly patio is perfect to relax, enjoy way too many garlic and feta fries and the illustrious flaming cheese, saganaki. But, it’s also a place to get a decent cocktail including their specialty martinis (which happen to be $5 on Mondays). 4 // A DECK WITH A VIEW FLATWATER During the warmer months the canal-side patio at this Broad Ripple establishment is generally packed to the brim with people drinking beer, noshing on some grub (usually fish tacos) and listening to live music. If it’s Sunday, then you’re in luck, their Bloody Mary bar is full of spicy goodness.

5 // A TRANSPORTING COURTYARD IOZZO’S GARDEN OF ITALY Spending an evening in the rustic outdoor courtyard with a bottle of wine, some meatballs and pasta carbonara will leave you feeling like you’ve been transported into a local spot in Calabria, where the Iozzo family comes from. We could say it’s romantic, but you’ll be leaving so full that not much romance will happen after a meal here.

8 // A TRAIL-SIDE SPOT PUBLIC GREENS Don’t miss First Friday on the Farm dinners on this patio. Enjoy a healthy meal from the team behind Patachou. It sticks with the farm-to-table mindset of all of their locations. How farm-to-table, you might ask? Well, let’s just say the only divider between this place and its urban farm is the Monon Trail.

6 // A ROMANTIC PATIO MAMA CAROLLA’S This Italian restaurant in SoBro has been ranked most romantic restaurant time after time by our readers and one look at the patio will show you why. With the old world charm, a great list of classic cocktails and food will bring you back time and again, the patio is a lovely place to spend a summer evening.

9 // A RAUCOUS BIERGARTEN RATHSKELLER While you’d be doing yourself a great disservice by not enjoying at least one meal inside this historic Indianapolis restaurant, you’d also be doing yourself a disservice by not enjoying many evenings in the outdoor biergarten. It’s best if it is an evening with live music, of which they have plenty, and it’s even better once you have a good German beer in your hand.

7 // A BEAUTIFUL BALCONY PLAT 99 Without a doubt one of the best patios to drink on in the city. The drinks are top notch, the food is superb and the aesthetics are unique. Gather a group of friends and hope that you’re able to snag a comfy seat around the fires and sip the night away. And don’t miss out on a bag of that addicting popcorn.

10 // A RESERVOIR OVERLOOK RICK’S CAFÉ BOATYARD This place is all about the location. It doesn’t get much better than watching the sun sink down over Eagle Creek reservoir, sail boats making their way across the smooth lake, while you’re eating some oysters Rockefeller, followed by a generous filet of blackened Mahi-Mahi and an ice-cold beer. Life is good.

INDIANA BEERS TO SIP UNDER THE SUMMER SUN (OR MOON)

1 // 18TH STREET BREWING CO OH, SO PRETTY You can’t have a summer beer guide without a saison or farmhouse ale, and 18th Street hits this one on the head just like most of their beers. This Gary and Hammond-based brewery is a relative newcomer to the beer scene. It has been making headlines left and right for good reason. Start by drinking this nice, light beer for the summer. 2 // ASH & ELM CIDER CO IDLE SUMMER Yes, it’s not a beer, we get it, but damn it’s so good in the hot summer sun. This cider is made with grapefruit and ginger and is the perfect light and refreshing drink for the non-beer drinkers amongst us, and it may even convert a couple beer drinkers to the light side. 3 // BLACK CIRCLE BREWING CO. HAN SHOT FIRST PALE ALE Whether or not you agree with the sentiment of the name, you will undoubtedly agree that this beer is the real winner. Black Circle is crafting plenty of beers that are drinkable on warm summer nights, but this is the one to go back to time and again. Also, yes, Han did shoot first. 4 // BLOOMINGTON BREWING CO. 10-SPEED HOPPY WHEAT 10 SUMMER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

This has enough hops in it to appease the hopheads of the world while still being light enough on the palate for pilsner and wheat drinkers to enjoy it too. It truly is a thing of beauty and easily one of the most drinkable beers on the market. While it promotes bicycling we suggest waiting to drink it after you’ve finished your summer joy ride. 5 // CANNON BALL BREWING ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK Truly one of the most interesting beers you’ll ever come across, this golden ale has hints of thai basil and ginger in it. You may not know it, but Thailand is pretty much summer temperatures year round, except sometimes it rains. Kinda like it has here over the past month. This beer would be perfect for drinking your way from Hat Yai to Chiang Mai. 6 // CENTERPOINT BREWING CO. GOLD Pretty sure that kolsches were made to drink while sitting out in the summer sun. This is one of Centerpoint’s flagship beers; it’s incredibly easy to drink and we must admit, it’s pretty much liquid gold. 7 // CENTRAL STATE BREWING CO. A POINT Another farmhouse ale for the list, but this one is about as different as they come. A collaboration between Central

3 // BUTLER WINERY BLACKBERRY If sweet wines are your thing — and they seem to be for a lot of people in Indiana — Butler’s blackberry wine is about as sweet as they come and will remind you of blackberry preserves. Sip on it fireside while eating the chocolate you were going to make s’mores with, and you won’t be disappointed.

State and Neal Brown which utilizes unique flavors including: toasted rice, wild rice, Indiana sumac, buckwheat and grains of paradise. It truly is a one-of-akind beer, and it’s on point. 8 // FOUR DAY RAY B.O.B. Any beer with blood orange in it will surely be summery and the name of this beer stands for blood orange blonde. While it is a medium-bodied beer, the fruit-forward flavor makes it a great beer to sip on while hanging out with friends while grilling out in the backyard. 9 // ROUND TOWN BREWING ANGLE JUICE Round Town and Sun King came together to craft this Americanized English mild. With a low abv you can drink quite a few of these without feeling wasted and the mild flavor-profile makes is a nice summer beer that steers away from the sweeter palate that most summery beers have. 10 // UPLAND BREWING CO CAMPSIDE It’s light and smokey and delicious and you should drink it by a campfire and sing kumbaya and eat marshmallows.

…. PLUS

SUMMER WINES

1 // MALLOW RUN WINERY CAYUGA This light-bodied wine will remind you of Riesling, but don’t worry, it’s not crazily sweet. It is perfect for a night when you’re grilling some chicken in the backyard and enjoying the sunset.

2 // EASLEY WINERY TRAMINETTE If you’re planning on an evening with some spicy food like green curry or pad kee mao, this award-winning wine is the perfect pairing with its strong tropical notes and honeysuckle.

4 // HUBER WINERY VIGNOLES Order some takeout sushi, or finally break out that sushi—making kit your aunt got your for Christmas two years ago and then get wine drunk by the pool by sipping your way through a few glasses of this crisp, citrusy wine. 5 // FRENCH LICK WINERY CABERNET FRANC Yes, in the warmer months you more than likely should be drinking a nice white, maybe even a rosé. But if red is the only way you swing, this oakey, dry red will go perfectly with that steak you just pulled off the grill. Don’t forget to let the wine breathe and the steak rest.

SIP ON A PINT ON A PATIO WITH YOUR POOCH //

ten

POOCH-FRIENDLY PLACES

1 // BIER BREWERY EASTWOOD They are (and always have been) a dogfriendly brewery. Bring your favorite furball to the tap room and let them rest on the comfy couch and sip out of a Bier Pup Cup. 2 // BROAD RIPPLE BREWPUB BROAD RIPPLE You get to drink beer and enjoy some delicious, possibly vegan, fare while your pup gets to make some furry friends of their own on this patio. It’s always crawling with dogs during the warmer months. 3 // CHILLY WATER BREWING CO. HOLY ROSARY Located just off the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, this is the perfect place to stop in for a refreshing pint while you’re out walking Fido. 4 // FLAT 12 BIERWERKS HOLY CROSS You’ll love their beers as much as your pooch loves the treats available for purchase from the restaurant inside, Hoagies and Hops. Plus, they serve Indy’s first dog brew, so your pooch can have a pint as well. 5 // FOUNTAIN SQUARE BREWERY FOUNTAIN SQUARE Prepare for your puppy to be greeted with a fair amount of affection from patrons and workers alike as you sit in a comfy chair and drink a Workingman’s Pilsner. 6 // METAZOA BREWING CO. FLETCHER PLACE This is one awesome spot to take Spot. Com12 SUMMER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

plete with a small dog park outside, and giving a percentage of their profits to animal charities, this is a beer drinking dog-lover’s haven. 7 // MOFOCO BROAD RIPPLE It’s time for the three main food groups: tacos, wings and mac and cheese. All of which your pupper will be more than happy to get a taste of if some pieces happen to fall on the ground. 8 // OASIS DINER PLAINFIELD Take a trip back in time — about 470 dog years into the past — to this 1950s-style diner. While it is best to sit inside at the bar and pretend you’re in a Quentin Tarantino flick, if you have your doggo you can sit outside. Order a burger, fries shake and listen to your favorite ‘50s tunes before you hop in your hopped-up deuce and go for some pinks. 9 // SCARLET LANE BREWING CO. MCCORDSVILLE Sip on one of their four house beers, or any number of specialties they have on tap, while sitting by their fire pit with your canine companion. 10 // SHOEFLY PUBLIC HOUSE HERRON-MORTON PLACE Eating in the outdoor area here feels more like you’re at a park with the picnic tables and strands of hanging lights crossing overhead. If it’s a Thursday, your pooch will feel comfortable lying down in the grass while you both listen to some live music and make new friends.

ARTS

A

fter what might have been the longest wet spring and teasingly warm winter, this summer couldn’t come soon enough. To celebrate, here are a slew of amazing outdoor events on the docket for this summer. You might have noticed last time in our CityGuide that we did a bit of a revamp. This round we have lists filled with outside activities, concerts, patios and more. Some of my personal favorites are the public art bike tours. Start and end at a brewery, bring your own bike or rent one and learn about the stories behind Indy’s public artwork. So deep breath. Exhale away the political stress, and go get some vitamin D.

EVENTS THAT BRING THE ARTS OUTSIDE

1 // FOR THE ADRENALINE JUNKY NATURE UNLEASHED: INSIDE NATURAL DISASTERS: INDIANA STATE MUSEUM AND HISTORIC SITES THROUGH MAY 29, ALL-AGES If you don’t like Indiana weather, wait five minutes. The phrase is cliché but how often do we think about severe weather besides tornadoes in the midwest? This exhibit breaks down the science behind forces of nature like earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes and more. The State Museum is asking questions like, “How do they affect us and how do we respond? Can we prevent them? Should we even try?” Purdue science department even contributed to this one, so you know it’s good. 2 // FOR THE NATURE NUT AUDUBON: DRAWN TO NATURE: IMA THROUGH JULY 30, ALL-AGES When you walk into the IMA it’s easy to forget that you are in the city — the middle of the city at that — with expansive grounds and floors of rotating world class collections. This exhibit hails the natural beauty surrounding the IMA with a series from John James Audubon. Yes, the same one that the Audubon society is named after. Be prepared to see birds captured in moments that most would never see. While you are there check out the newly opened beer garden. Oh, and the second iteration of the mini golf course designed by local artists. 3 // FOR THE SOCIALITE ARTIST INDUSTRY NIGHTS: INDY CONVERGENCE MAY 17, ALL-AGES Indy Convergence is pairing up with NoPal

Cultural to bring an evening of networking. Artists and creatives from around the city are encouraged to come together and network, collaborate and socialize. An easy conversation piece is all of the creative placemaking that’s popping up around the Indy Convergence home base. The Westside will no doubt continue to draw out and give homes for existing artists over the next few years. 4 // FOR THE BOOKWORM EARTH FRIENDLY FESTIVAL & SUMMER READING KICKOFF: GARFIELD PARK PUBLIC LIBRARY BRANCH JUNE 3, ALL-AGES One of Indy’s best hidden gems is our library. Yes, the downtown location offers an amazing view from the fourth floor. But did you also know that some of the most innovative programing in the city happens in each of the branches? Take the Earth Friendly Festival for example; it is set to be a kid friendly day of activities to celebrate the Summer Reading program at the library. Here is part of the line up: “Learn how to make a rain barrel during workshops presented at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Learn about electric cars with Blue Indy and visit with a representative from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. The Silly Safaris Animal Show will presented at 10:30 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., visit the Wagon of Wonders, Big Car Collaborative’s mobile, interactive art unit and pop-up public space. From 1 to 3:30 p.m., visit the WonderLab: The Museum of Science, Health and Technology to see five bubbly stations, explore bubbles, make a bubble wand, and create one-of-a-kind ghost bubbles.”

NUVO // 2017 // SUMMER CITYGUIDE 17

5 // FOR THE CHILD AT HEART CHALK ART FESTIVAL: HAMILTON TOWN CENTER JUNE 10, ALL-AGES Who said chalk is just for kids?! 6 // FOR THE INDY AFICIONADO PUBLIC ART BIKE TOUR: MILE SQUARE JUNE 10, ALL-AGES The public art bike tours are becoming an Indy staple. Right now you can see public art around Mass Ave., Fountain Square and Mile Square. This specific one focuses on Mile Square. The tours all start and end at a brewery (twist my arm on that one). This tour will depart from Sun King. It will “include murals, sculpture, electronic art, civic art on and around the Statehouse, and, of course, the iconic monument in the heart of it all.” According to the Arts Council. The Arts Council Director of Public Art Julia Muney Moore will guide the excursion, finishing with the monument of course. The cost runs $35 including bike rental and $25 if you bring your own bike. 7 // FOR THE ITALIAN (AND ITALIAN LOVER) HOLY ROSARY 2017 ITALIAN STREET FESTIVAL: MILITARY PARK JUNE 9-10, ALL-AGES It’s one of the best outdoor festivals that happens in Indy each year. If you have never been there is plenty of food, artwork and performances that take over downtown. Here is a fun challenge. Make this the year you attend every cultural festival downtown. 8 // FOR THE FIGHTERS AND ALLIES JUNE 10, CIRCLE CITY IN PRIDE Indy Pride has gone through some serious growing pains over the last few years; from trying to bring on a more diverse board to changing the festival’s location and tacking on a ticket price to enter the fest as a fundraiser. This year the festival will be held at Military Park, allowing easier access to those with disabilities. Think

of the ticket cost as a small donation. You can also purchase tickets for those who can’t afford it. Pay it forward, y’all. 9 // FOR THE CIRCUS PERFORMERS ARTS FOR LAWRENCE SUMMER CAMP: THEATER AT THE FORT JUNE 12-16, AGES 6-12 If your kid is even remotely interested in the circus, miming or theater, then this is the camp for them. It’s $125 per week filled with creative visual and performing arts for kids ages 6-12. There are additional weeks: this one is taught by Lawrence Township teacher, Luis Oliva. Each weekly camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. 10 // FOR THE HISTORY HOUND NAPTOWN GET DOWN: A GROOVY, BOOZY TOUR THROUGH 1970S INDIANAPOLIS, 416 WABASH JUNE 20-21, 21+ This crawl is not for the faint of heart; it’s for the true history lover. Running for the fifth year in a row it “combines thematicallyappropriate food and drinks with historic re-enactments of stories of the city and its people... Participants will weave through downtown, beginning and ending at 416 Wabash and will journey to four different stops along the way to learn about the people and places that helped transform the city from ‘India-no-place’ to the dynamic urban center of today,” according to Indiana Humanities. The entire thing was brought to life through several months of research with the Historical Society to develop each character. Indiana Humanities also noted that “this year’s stops (typically not bars, but instead locations conducive to talking and/or tied to the theme) are all based on real events and include a re-enactment of Bobby Slick’s Indiana Pacers telethon that was created to save the team from leaving Indianapolis and a meeting of Indy feminists at a CityWay apartment where they discover they have been reprimanded by the National Organization for Women. Other stories and locations will be revealed on the night of the event.”

PIECES OF NEW PUBLIC ART 1 // BROAD RIPPLE TRAFFIC SIGNAL BOXES BROAD RIPPLE Some of Broad Ripple’s newest public art is painted on traffic signal boxes, and we are way too into the monster theme. Find them along four different intersections throughout the strip. 2 // MILLERSVILLE MARKER MILLERSVILLE This sculpture and outdoor seating area looks so fitting along the Fall Creek Trail, it might have grown there. The project began when the neighbors asked for a community space that incorporated nature.

The Arts Council of Indianapolis noted that “after their discussions with the Millersville neighborhood, artists Amy Brier and Sharon Fullingim found that residents frequently conveyed the importance of the incorporation of a mill wheel element: a nod to the area’s history. Limestone was selected as the material because it is the artists’ specialty. The artwork design recalls this history with the inclusion of partial mill wheel forms at the top of each of three adjacent upright pillars. A lifesized, three-dimensional, red-tailed hawk in cast bronze adorns the tallest upright to refer to the wildlife seen near the site. Each pillar also has one carved side and one side with the natural limestone face. The carved sides have detailed motifs featuring symbols of the area: birds, wheat, and the flowing water of Fall Creek. Each upright is ‘pierced’ with shaped openings to allow light to flow through them.” 3 // SEEDS OF LIGHT SPEEDWAY Located just off of 16th Street near Speedway, the sculpture is meant to highlight the history and culture of Speedway and it’s two sister cities, Motegi, Japan and Varano de’ Melegari, Italy. The piece, created by Arlon Bayliss, looks like an 18-foot singlestemmed flower. The artist notes that “each lit ‘floret’ symbolizes the exchange experience of Speedway’s Sister Cities [exchange] students, their connections with their hosts, and their potential as global citizens.” The piece was commissioned as a partnership with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. 4 // ENGLEWOOD COMMUNITY MURAL ENGLEWOOD The Englewood mural is near East Washington and Rural. Designed by six-member Herron art collaborative The Droops, the mural was intended to reflect conversation with the community regarding the space. The words on the mural read “keep your head up.” The words are surrounded by portraits of faces.

5 // DUTY-HONOR-SACRIFICE MASS AVE This new cast bronze sculpture was created in partnership with F.A. Wilhelm Construction, who donated the sculpture as a thank you to local firefighters. The piece itself was created by IFD active-duty firefighter and local artist, Ryan Feeney. Ryan also owns Indy Art Forge, where he makes sculptures out of metal; such as the “Peace Dove” sculpture for the Central Library, the “Fallen Deputy Memorial” and the “Bronze Eagle.” The statue looks like a firefighter in full uniform. 6 // 20 PAST 4 AND MORE MURAL SOBRO This mural was created by local FAB graffiti crew, run by 6Cents and Sacred317. The two spread this trippy piece over the side of a head shop, and damn, does it fit. Fab crew has a background in fine art and commercial work, but both try and stay true to street art styles. The long mural uses bright colors around a portrait and stylized writing. 7 // COTTAGES OF THE NEAR EASTSIDE NEAR EASTSIDE This one is simple, nevertheless beautiful. It’s a two-dimensional depiction of houses in the old Eastside neighborhood. The twosided mural lines an underpass. According to the Arts Council, artist Jarryd Foreman intended it to be a reflection of the neighborhood itself, stating “these neighborhoods were once home to the thousands of immigrants that flooded into Indianapolis during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in search of a fresh start.” In the mural, you can pick out individual houses that are actually in the Holy Cross, Cottage Home and Windsor Park neighborhoods. 8 // DAY AND NIGHT WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS HIGHLAND VICINITY Who didn’t love that poem? The mural “Day and Night” is inspired by the famous

writing of Shel Silverstein. It was created by local artist Charity M. Counts and her five-year-old son. (We think that counts for parent of the year points.) Part of the mural is intended to show a child’s transition from an imaginary world to reality. The southern portion of the mural is meant to reflect the question, “what happens when the sun goes down where the sidewalk ends?” The mural uses blue and yellow to create a dream-like scape. 9 // TIME FLOW DOWNTOWN Indiana’s 200th birthday brought some killer art to Indy; not to mention some great arts programing. This piece was commissioned to honor the 2016 bicentennial and the design was intended to complement the architecture of the Statehouse itself. The artist, Bloomingtonbased Dale Enochs, created three sections to the piece. The Arts Council describes it as “a polished, stainless-steel ring supported by slabs of carved Indiana limestone. The carvings are patterns representative of imagery from all over the state. The ring represents a portal, through which the viewer is symbolically moving from one point in time to another. The two other elements of the piece are scattered around the plaza – also designed by the artist – and are a dwarf tulip poplar (the state tree) and a “water table” of solid limestone, carved with a map of the state highlighting its major waterways.” 10 // LUX AETERNA (ETERNAL LIGHT) DOWNTOWN Like the piece mentioned above, “Lux Aeterna” was commissioned to honor the bicentennial. Created by artist Osman Akan and installed at Bicentennial Plaza at the Statehouse, it’s simple and clean lines are meant to be similar to the torch on the state flag. It also uses Indiana limestone, and it doesn’t get much more Hoosier than that.

KID-FRIENDLY ART-BASED GREEN SPACES OR PLAYGROUNDS

1 // PARAMOUNT SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE BROOKSIDE Not only is Paramount school leading Indy education by combining interactive classes and the environment, they also just created a Peace Park. The opening ceremony and dedication was hosted by U.S. Paralympic medalist Nick Springer. 2 // GARFIELD PARK ARTS CENTER GARFIELD PARK When we asked Julia Muney Moore the director of public art at The Arts Council of Indianapolis for some of her favorite kidfriendly art and green spaces, her recommendation was the Garfield Park Arts Center. “[It] now has two artworks installed in their Art Garden, near the Pagoda, which are very kidfriendly and accessible; in fact, Garfield Park has a lot of art these days courtesy of Big Car as well as some traditional monuments [that] could be worth an ‘art hunt’!” 3 // MONON TRAIL INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND The Monon Trail now has a new piece near the Indiana School for the Blind, designed by students at the school who worked with a professional artist who is legally blind, Tim Ryan. 4 // CHINQUAPIN OAK PARK NEAR EASTSIDE Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is hard at work in a vacant lot in the Springdale neighborhood. The project is intended to highlight one of Indianapolis’ oldest trees, a chinquapin oak that’s going on 300 years old. 5 // IMA’S 100 ACRES ART & NATURE PARK INDIANAPOLIS MUSEUM OF ART It’s basically the best day you can have in the 22 SUMMER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

city with kids. The interactive installations are perfect for climbing, and who doesn’t love the Funky Bones piece? 6 // BOY AND DOG MILE SQUARE Just off of East and St. Claire lies a small privately owned (but publicly accessible) park that is a hidden gem. The park and art installations are kid friendly. 7 // SPADES PARK AND POGUES RUN PARK NEAR EASTSIDE Spades and Pogues Run Park both have some newer art installations thanks to Reconnecting to our Waterways. Spades and Pogues Run are great introductory places to talk to your kids about water sustainability and how to locally impact environmental change. 8 // BALL GARDENS IUPUI IUPUI restored Ball Gardens into a greenspace open to the public that includes a fountain with a sculpture entitled “Eve” — a piece that debuted at the Indiana Building of the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933. 9 // FOR THE KID AT HEART INDIANAPOLIS ART CENTER BROAD RIPPLE You know and love the art center. It’s practically a kid’s dreamland backyard. 10 // FOR THE IMAGINEER TARKINGTON PARK 38TH AND MERIDIAN You will see this park transform over the next few years. There is already a new playground area complete with a rock wall and tons of geometric climbing structures.

hat’s up, jerks! It’s time for another delightful installment of “all the music shows you should buy tickets to this summer.” Keeping with our-all-outside-all-thetime theme we’re rounding up festivals near and far, plus some of the best outdoor spaces to hit up. Oh, fests: You’ve heard the Fyre Festival horror stories. You remember Evermore. Festivals can be a tricky business. The ten fests we include here are tried, true, and won’t leave you stranded in the Bahamas with just a cheese sandwich and a pack of feral dogs howling in the distance. Of course there’s always way more online at NUVO.net, where we’re constantly typing our little hearts out. See you at the shows. KATHERINE COPLEN EDITOR @tremendous

This year, the ISO will present Beethoven’s Fifth, Star Spangled Symphony, One of These Nights — A Tribute to the Eagles, Feeling Groovy — Remembering the Summer of Love, Romance Under the Stars, John Williams Strikes Back and Just the Hits: 20 Years of Doo Wop Classics. And that’s the first two months. Music goes through September.

4 // IF YOU’VE GOT THE BUCKS TO SHELL OUT KLIPSCH MUSIC CENTER, NOBLESVILLE Indy’s largest outdoor music venue seats 24,000, books a metric ton of country and classic rock and caters to the sort of people who want to hear Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rip through a set of huge hits and be sent on their way by 11 p.m. — a.k.a., us. This summer’s lineup includes Train, Lady Antebellum, Boston, Joan Jett, Sam Hunt, Future, Def Leppard, Chicago, The Doobie Brothers, Jason Aldean, and more. And if there’s rain and you’ve dropped a bit of extra change, you’re in luck: pavilion seating will cover you as the tunes keep rocking. 5 // IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A HISTORY LESSON ALONGSIDE YOUR TUNES EUGENE AND MARILYN GLICK INDIANA HISTORY CENTER, DOWNTOWN Concerts on the Canal is one of the best ways to spend a summer night Downtown. Walk on the canal, see some of the public art by the zoo and end it with a jazz concert. The 2017 lineup includes Hopkins and Miller, In Tha Moment, Tilite Nites, Indianapolis Municipal Band and more. 6 // IF YOU’VE GOT A LOT OF FREE TIME NICKEL PLATE AMPHITHEATRE, FISHERS Organizers call the 15th year of summer concerts at Nickel Plate their most ambitious to date, and we’re inclined to agree. Live music on Tuesday nights, Wednesday afternoons, and most weekends feature a wide variety of funk, rock, acoustic, pop and jam bands, including Trippin’ Billies, Jennie DeVoe, Smash Mouth, Loverboy, Chad Mills, Woomblies Rock Orchestra and more. We can’t fit the whole list here — ambitious, remember? — but read on in the listings for more details from Nickel Plate’s large concert schedule. List Continues on pg 34...

SPORTS JAUNTS FOR WHEN YOU’RE FEELING SOME TYPE OF WAY

1 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE WEARING A BEER GUZZLER HELMET INDIANAPOLIS 500 MAY 28, INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY Formula 1 star Fernando Alonso ditching The Monaco Grand Prix for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing is the storyline everyone is talking about, but I’d like to bring up the little known fact that the Indy 500 is The Greatest Spectacle in People Watching. 300,000+ people wearing god knows what drinking beer as soon as the sun comes up makes for some extremely weird sights. 2 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE SINGING YOUR HEART OUT INDY ELEVEN VARIOUS DATES, MICHAEL A. CARROLL STADIUM So you failed to make The Voice. It’s a setback, but don’t worry, the Brickyard Battalion doesn’t care how well — or how terribly — you sing. As long as you’re loud and proud they welcome you to the West End. And, at the date of publication, Indiana’s Team had a home unbeaten streak of 21 consecutive games. Yes, their unbeaten streak is legally allowed to drink the new Battalion Pale Ale. Cheers to that. 3 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE WITNESSING SOMETHING UNIQUE MASS AVE CRIT AUG. 5, MASS AVE What the hell is a crit, you ask? We’ll try and describe it in the simplest of ways: it’s an urban bike race on closed city streets that tends to be highly technical and covers a short distance. Boom. MAC’s triangular course sets it apart from other crits and 36 SUMMER CITYGUIDE // 2017 // NUVO // 100% SUSTAINABLE / RECYCLED PAPER

challenges riders that may have never faced 120-degree turns before. Grab a beer, sit across from the famous “Dancing Lady” and watch the professionals do their thing. 4 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE STUFFING YOUR FACE INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS VARIOUS DAYS, VICTORY FIELD The Monday Dollar Menu promotion is a glorious way to enjoy an Indians game and fill your stomach with copious amounts of ballpark food all while not breaking the bank. Who will eat the most Victory Dogs before belting out “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch? You, if you really believe in yourself. Other rad promotional nights include Craft Beer Thursdays, Super Hero Saturdays, Fireworks Fridays and Kids Eat Free Sundays. 5 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE BREAKING YOUR PR MONUMENTAL MILE JUNE 1, MONUMENT CIRCLE Start the sixth month of 2017 by setting a new personal record. The Monumental Mile course features 5,280 feet of flat terrain providing you the perfect opportunity to do just that. Each division — Masters, Open, Youth and Elite — race separately down Meridian Street, ending at Indy’s most photographed Monument. Expect the fourminute barrier to be broken. 6 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE FINDING INNER PEACE MONUMENTAL YOGA JUNE 21, MONUMENT CIRCLE Donald Trump is president. That alone should be enough of a reason to want to do

some yoga in the middle of the Circle City. And doing it alongside fellow yoga-loving Hoosiers makes things ten times better. Take a few minutes out of each day to find your inner peace. It’s a great way to stay sane in this insane world. 7 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE WATCHING PEOPLE DO CARDIO INSTEAD OF DOING IT YOURSELF INDY CRITERIUM JULY 8, MONUMENT CIRCLE What’s better than riding your bike in Downtown Indy? Watching someone else ride their bike in Downtown Indy, of course. And if you haven’t noticed, Monument Circle is the place to be this summer. Indy Crit benefits Freewheelin’ Community Bikes, which serves kids in the Indy area. 8 // FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE WORKING OUT YOUR NECK MUSCLES PEARSON FORD OPEN JUNE 15-18, THE WOODSTOCK CLUB It’s no Wimbledon but it is a chance to watch professionals and top-ranked collegiate players take the court in a competitive setting. Nothing like watching grown men
