LIGHT OUTPUT The lumen figures quoted here, elsewhere in this brochure, our catalogue and on our product packaging are “luminaire lumens”. This is the actual output of the fitting, with the diffuser or controller fitted. This is the approach demanded by the internationally recognised standard, LM79. Some manufacturers quote lumen outputs that are “LED lumens” – the output of the LEDs before the diffuser or controller is fitted. This can be very misleading. Take care when comparing lumen outputs to ensure that you are comparing like with like.
MAKE THE SWITCH TO LED We now have LED Amenity products for every application that deliver more light, for less watts, than both 28W and 38W 2D. In all cases, LED DELIVERS MORE LIGHT FOR LESS POWER than the nearest equivalent 2D fitting.

AMENITY LIGHTING
PORTLAND LED
Of all our amenity fittings, this is the most popular... It is widely used in corridors, but the IP54 rating makes it suitable for bathrooms and toilets too. Delivering up to 89 luminaire lumens per circuit watt, it is also very efficient and qualifies for an Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA).
MICRO-PRISMATIC CONTROLLER. Special polycarbonate micro-prismatic controller contributes to the high efficiency of the PORTLAND. Rather than rely only on opal material to diffuse the light we use micro-prisms on the inner face of the cover.
NO LED IMAGE. Some cheaper alternatives to the PORTLAND look great when they are switched off, but when they are switched on the individual LEDs are visible. They might rival our efficiency, but without the micro-prismatic controller they can’t rival the good looks.
CCT SELECTABLE. Selectable switch to change colour temperature between 4000K and 5000K
CHOICE OF BEZELS. PORTLAND comes complete with either a white or a chrome finish bezel.
GASKET between base and controller to maintain the IP54 rating.
PORTLAND can be supplied with corridor function (dim-to-10%).
PORTAND is available with an integral micro-wave sensor.
PORTLAND with a micro-wave sensor is a great solution for corridors - Not all fittings need a sensor. You can have one at each end of the corridor and one or two in the middle, depending on its length. These are the “master” fittings. - The terminal block in the master fittings all have a switch-live output from the sensor – route this to the “slave” fittings.
- Order all fittings with corridor-function - Order two or more fittings with a micro-wave sensor (one for each end, plus one or two in the middle). - At installation, run the switched-live - output from the micro-wave fittings in parallel to all the others. - When anyone enters the corridor, from either end or from the middle, the lights will all brighten from 10% up to 100%.
This has lots of benefits: - It is easy to install – why fit two separate devices (luminaire AND sensor) when you could just fit one? - It looks better than a separate, stand-alone, sensor - The sensor is protected behind the tough, IP54 rated cover on the fitting. No risk it gets damaged.

ADDISON
was specifically designed for stairwells Achieving the light levels advised in EN12464 on stairs and half landings, in both standard and emergency mode, requires fittings with a higher output than are generally needed in straight corridors. In the past, 38W 2D was used (with mixed results) and sometimes 55W T5 circular lamps. Today the ADDISON achieves better results than both these light sources with just 21 watts, and it outperforms them in emergency mode too.
Let’s compare the same stairwell lit with 2 different NVC fittings;
the ADDISON 38W 2D and ADDIDSON LED The aim is to achieve 100 lux at floor level in normal operation and 1 lux minimum in emergency mode, with the highest possible uniformity and the lowest power consumption. Using 14 fittings in each case the results are as follows: STANDARD MODE

In standard operation the LED fittings outperform the 38W 2D in light level and in uniformity.
Superior emergency operation In emergency mode, the LED fittings also outperform the 38W 2D in both average light level and uniformity.
These isolux diagrams illustrate the light levels being achieved on a flight of stairs in two lighting installations. Each installation uses the same number of fittings, installed in the same position.
These diagrams show that our ADDISON LED fittings light stairwells much better than 38W 2D. If you are looking for 1:1 replacements of 2D, look to NVC.

BIG FINANCIAL SAVINGS WITH SENSORS The savings from installing NVC LED fittings can be bigger than you would expect. LIKE-FOR-LIKE ELECTRICITY SAVINGS In a new-build, 18W LED can be used to replace 38W 2D with fewer fittings, achieving a higher light level and saving nearly 60% energy. Even bigger savings can be made by using sensors as well.
BIGGER SAVINGS WITH SENSORS
•
Micro-wave occupancy sensor with photo-cell When occupancy is detected the fitting will switch on, unless there is sufficient ambient light already available. The sensor is adjustable for sensitivity (range), time-out and lux level.
•
Corridor function (Dim-to-10%) This is popular in combination with the micro-wave, but can also be used with an external sensor or time-switch. When required the fitting goes to 100% output, but when no longer required (eg when the sensor is no longer detecting occupancy) it drops to 10%. Background lighting is therefore always present, creating a sense of safety and security.
All our amenity fittings for commercial use are available with any combination of the following options fitted: •
Emergency (3 hours maintained) These give a substantially higher output in emergency mode than the 2D fittings they typically replace, ensuring compliant lighting especially on stairs.
YOU MIGHT FIND THIS INTERESTING…. Micro-wave sensors – how they work Micro-wave sensors work like radar, using a phenomenon known as the “Doppler shift”. Each sensor emits and detects radiation. The radiation they emit is at a very lowlevel and is at a specific frequency; this bounces off solid objects and is detected by the same sensor that emitted it.
However, if the radiation bounces off a moving object (such as a person walking) the frequency is changed. When this frequency change (known as the “Doppler shift”) is detected by the sensor it is an indication that the area is now occupied and that the lights should be switched on.
If the radiation bounces off a stationery object, such as a wall, the frequency of the radiation is unchanged.
Stationary object
Moving towards
Moving away
The frequency of the radiation emitted by the sensor is the same as the frequency of the radiation reflected off the stationery object. No change of frequency is detected, the sensor is not triggered.
The frequency of the radiation reflected off the body moving towards the sensor is higher than the frequency of the radiation emitted by the sensor. A frequency change (“Doppler shift”) is detected and the sensor is triggered.
The frequency of the radiation reflected off the body moving away from the sensor is lower than the frequency of the radiation emitted by the sensor. A frequency change (“Doppler shift”) is detected and the sensor is triggered.

SAFETY & SECURITY WITH DIM-TO-10% CORRIDOR FUNCTION All our fittings with a micro-wave sensor can also be ordered with corridor function. This is a popular feature that means the lights are on at 10% all the time, and brighten to 100% when occupancy is detected. This is widely used in corridors and stairwells where some constant background light gives people a feeling of well-being and security. The adjustable time-out ensures that the lights stay at 100% while there is a possibility someone is still present. Keeping the time out short maximises the energy savings, and with LEDs it does not increase maintenance costs.
LUX SWITCH-ON THRESHOLD

Extra energy saved by photo-cell Time out period
Time out period
Our micro-wave sensors are all equipped with a photocell as standard. When the sensor is triggered by occupancy the light will only switch on if the ambient light level is beneath a pre-set threshold. This saves further energy by preventing the lights switching on, for example, at midday when plenty of natural light is present. Note that if you choose Corridor Function (above) then the lux switch-on threshold that is a standard feature of our micro-wave sensors will not operate.

HOW MUCH CAN BE SAVED WITH LEDS AND SENSORS? Consider a corridor in sheltered housing with 20 movements (people coming in and out) per day, with 4 x 28W 2D fittings installed. Because of the risk of lamp failure these fittings are not controlled with a sensor and are running 24/7. The total annual power consumption is therefore 28W/1,000 x 4 x 24 x 365 = 981KWhr/year.
SWITCH TO LED – SAVE 46% Switch to LED and the power consumption drops to 15W/1,000 x 4 x 24 x 365 = 526KWhr/year SWITCH TO LED WITH OCCUPANCY SENSING – SAVE 93% With LEDs and a micro-wave sensor on a time-out of, say, 10 minutes, the power consumption drops to 15W/1,000 x 4 x 3.33 x 365 = 73KWhr/year. In reality, the power consumption could be less than this if there is enough natural light present at any time to prevent the sensor switching the lights on.
+44 (0)121 457 6340 // www.nvcuk.com
SWITCH TO LED WITH OCCUPANCY SENSING AND CORRIDOR FUNCTION – SAVE 83% Corridor function increases the power consumption slightly when compared to just having LEDs with occupancy sensing. This is because even when occupancy is not detected the fitting is running at 10% (which consumes about 20% power). This extra (about 91KWhr/ year) brings the total to 164KWhr/year, but the residents have the benefit of a low level of background light at all times for a sense of reassurance and safety.
