EMERGENCY LIGHTING

CORE RANGE

Emergency lighting you don’t have a choice

Emergency lighting - you buy it because you have to, not because you want to. Our aim is to make the process as simple and painless as possible, providing a one-stop shop for a comprehensive range of emergency lighting that meets all your requirements: •

Covers every application area from office, through corridors and stairwells to the warehouse and workshop.

Complies with all the current regulations

Signage, functional emergency lighting (twinspots & bulkheads) and emergency conversions (panels & downlights)

Manual test, self-test or addressable self-test

We are here to help you comply

Are you still using nickelcadmium batteries?

NVC is cadmium-free. You can be too Cadmium was banned under the RoHS directive in 2006 because it is so toxic and very persistent in the environment, but the emergency lighting business continued to use cadmium batteries (NiCd) because of the lack of alternatives.

Emergency lighting is highly regulated. It’s not good enough just to have some; the light fixtures have to be compliant, their location and spacing must be compliant and then they must be regularly tested to the appropriate standard.

That has now changed.

• Our fixtures are compliant with BS EN 60598

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, or LFE) batteries are now so much better than NiCd in every respect that we are replacing the NiCd batteries in in our emergency range with LFE. Most of our range is cadmium free already (Q4 2020), and the process will be completed by the end of 2021. NVC will then be cadmium-free.

• We offer emergency lighting design compliant with BS EN 1838 / BS 5266-4

Come with NVC and let’s all be cadmium-free. (More information on page 14)

• Our signage is compliant with the European Signs Directive, ISO7010 & BS 5266

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFE) the superior battery technology LFE out-performs NiCd on almost every count: • LFE lasts twice as long o The NiCd batteries in an emergency fitting should last for 4 years – if you treat them well and don’t use them too much. o Our LFE batteries will last for 8-10 years. Double the life, half the maintenance. • LFE save >40% energy compared to NiCd o NiCd batteries are losing charge all the time – about 20% per month – so the charging circuit is working 24/7 to keep them topped-up. o LFE only lose 3-5% per month, so we charge them in a short burst every 1 or two months. A typical IP65 bulk head using NiCd batteries using an extra 12.8 kWh per year compared to the same fitting with LFE batteries. LFE works better at high and low temperatures o High temperatures: NiCd is rated up to 55ºC. LFE rated up to 60ºC o Low temperatures: NiCd will not perform to the required specification below 0ºC, whereas LFE will perform to -20ºC

+44 (0)121 457 6340

• LFE is safe o There are many types of lithium battery. Lithium iron phosphate is the safest. o LFE will not catch fire, explode or leak

NVC LIGHTING EMERGENCY BROCHURE 2020

www.nvcuk.com

• LFE is the environmentally responsible choice o We can expect that cadmium will be completely banned before long. Why wait to be forced? Act now! o LFE batteries are fully recyclable

EMERGENCY LIGHTING TESTING BS 5266 requires a short functional test every month and an annual 3-hour test. We offer 3 ways to test emergency lighting:

Manual testing A key-switch is used to disconnect the permanent live supply to the emergency fitting. When this is disconnected the fitting switches to battery operation. It is necessary to observe the fitting to check it is working correctly and for the required duration. We supply a log sheet for recording the results. Manual testing is ideal for small installations, but the burden of record keeping and remembering to do the test every month will be impractical for larger buildings. All the fittings in this presentation/brochure are available in manual test versions.

There are TWO STYLES of emergency exit sign ...that are valid for use in the UK, and we supply them both

EUROPEAN SIGNS DIRECTIVE The European Signs Directive calls for the following legends, which are sometimes also referred to as “Euro legends”. They are easily distinguished by their use of an image of a man running towards a door. This is the style of legend supplied as standard with all our exit sign fittings.

The three Euro legends in common use are:

Self-test

Exit to the left

Some fittings can carry out their own test without human intervention or the need for a key-switch and the associated wiring. A self-testing emergency fitting is autonomous; it is operating on its own without any communication with neighbouring fittings or a central control point. A tri-colour (red, yellow and green) LED will indicate if the fitting is working correctly (green) or if it has an LED fault (yellow) or a battery fault (red).

Exit straight ahead

Self-test has great advantages: • Simpler to install than manual test - no key switch required • Simpler to install than addressable self-test (see below) because there is no communications wiring • Unlike an addressable self-test system, no commissioning by the installer is required …and disadvantages: • Manual test records are still required.

The self-test versions of our emergency products can be ordered as follows: ORDER CODE

Exit to the right

The European Signs Directive is not explicit concerning the use of either an up or downarrow to indicate “straight ahead”. Both are acceptable, but we supply the arrow-down legend as standard.

ISO7010 & BS5266 These 2 standards both use a single set of legends, sometimes referred to as “ISO7010” legends. They are easily distinguished by their use of an image of a man running through a door. These legends are available as optional extras with all our exit signs fittings.

There are three ISO7010 legends in common use:

Exit to the left

For larger sites we recommend an addressable self-test system. Addressable selftest emergency luminaires are all connected together and to a central point on a communications bus (usually DALI) and each fitting has a unique address.

We work with several leading suppliers of this specialized equipment and we will propose solutions that we consider to be most appropriate for a particular client or project.

Exit to the right

Note that ISO7010 and BS5266 are explicit that “straight ahead” is to be indicated with an up-arrow. NVC LIGHTING EMERGENCY BROCHURE 2020

www.nvcuk.com

Periodically, the central controller will command each emergency luminaire to start a test sequence and report the results back to the central controller.

Exit straight ahead

WHAT ARE LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE (LiFePO4) BATTERIES AND WHY DO WE USE THEM? THE BASICS

SIZE MATTERS

Lithium-ion. A lithium-ion cell is a secondary (rechargeable) cell in which lithium-ions move from the anode to the cathode when charging and from the cathode to the anode when discharging. There are several types of lithium-ion cells.

The NiCd battery pack traditionally used for emergency lighting is large and heavy. It has to be – because NiCd batteries suffer from the “Memory effect”. Partial discharge and recharging causes them to “forget” part of their capacity, so they store less energy every time they are used or tested.

Lithium iron. A lithium iron cell is one particular type of lithium-ion cell and it uses lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry.

TYPES OF LITHIUM-ION CELLS

There are many types of lithium-ion cells, including •

Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO4, or LCO). This is widely used for mobile phones, computers and cameras because of its high power density (it stores a lot of power for its size and weight). However, it is not as long lasting as some chemistries, is expensive due to the high cobalt content and may exhibit thermal runaway under some fault conditions.

Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LiNiMnCoO4, or NMC). In many respects an improvement on LCO, but still carrying a risk of thermal runaway under fault conditions. This is widely used for power tools.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, or LFE). The power density is slightly less than the LCO and NMC, but it is lower cost, longer lasting and does not have the thermal runaway properties that have caused problems with other types of lithium ion cells. It is an ideal choice for emergency lighting.

IMAGE

LFE batteries don’t suffer from the memory effect, so their capacity stays almost constant through their life. Therefore we need fewer of them to deliver the power required.

80% ENERGY SAVING +44 (0)121 457 6340 www.nvcuk.com

14

NiCd batteries lose power at the rate of 10-20% per month (depending on temperature), so they have to be constantly on-charge, keeping them topped-up to c 100%. LFE batteries only lose 3-5% per month, so they are recharged in short bursts every 1 or 2 months. LFEs benefit from 95% charging efficiency - 95% of the power entering the charger is stored in the battery. By contrast, NiCd batteries have a charge efficiency of only 85% - meaning that 15% of the power they consume while charging is lost as heat. To assess their overall energy efficiency we tested the performance of our own (very popular) IP65 emergency bulkhead using NiCd batteries and using LFE batteries. On average the NiCd version consumes 1.83 W while the LFE version consumes just 0.37W, an energy saving of 80%. [Picture & graph from web article] NVC LIGHTING EMERGENCY BROCHURE 2020

THE GREEN QUESTION Lithium v Cadmium which is better for the environment?

• Cadmium is classed as a heavy metal, alongside lead and mercury and like them it is highly toxic. It is banned under the RoHS Directive, but emergency lighting has an exemption because of the lack, till now, of viable alternatives. Lithium is not under similar restrictions. • Cadmium is highly persistent in the environment. Recent studies in the river Thames have found cadmium in the sediment at the bottom of the river dating back to London’s industrial heyday many decades ago. • Lithium batteries are much more energy efficient than NiCd, so they are contributing to our efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

+44 (0)121 457 6340

• Lithium batteries last twice as long as NiCd, so there is less material to dispose of. • Lithium batteries are smaller (because they don’t have the NiCd memory effect), so there is less material being consumed and less to be disposed of. [Javed – we could summarise these last 2 points in a graph. Can you get the samples (1 x NiCd and 1 x LFE) weighed? Then I can create something.]
