WELCOME to Issue 04 We would like to present our 2019 Catalogue... The catalogue is organized into two sections –

CORE RANGE – These products have an economical purchase price, high quality materials and an acceptable performance suitable for many regular lighting applications with regular hours of usage. These products have a 5 year*, 20,000 hour back to base repair or replacement warranty, which is suitable for many everyday situations. The exception is the Phoenix Batten and Emergency Ranges which have a 5 year* unlimited hour warranty. CONTRACTOR RANGE – These products are good value, high quality design and materials, excellent performance and many options giving flexible configuration for sensors, drivers and controls. These products all have a 5 year* unlimited hour back to base repair or replace warranty. * For full details of our warranty see our Terms & Conditions

NVC places a lot of emphasis in ensuring its products are quick and easy to install as we recognize the need to keep on site labour costs as low as possible.

Lighting Design Service – We offer this to support our customers in designing and costing their projects.

Product Configuration When sensors, controls and other changes to our products are required, our manufacturing unit in Rubery, Birmingham is able to offer a bespoke configuration service with a very quick turnaround typically 3 to 5 days.

After Sales Support – Our products are manufactured to a high standard and we do appreciate that when our customers trust us to supply products for their projects, they do expect a high level of support when installing and commissioning their projects to ensure they are successfully completed on time and to budget. We do provide this support quickly and efficiently when required.

Website – Our website houses our online catalogue and also allows for quick download of data sheets to support project bids and maintenance manuals.

PHOTOCELL FUNCTION

PIR FUNCTIONS PIR CONTROL - ON/Manual override. Turns the floodlight on without any PIR control. Handy for illuminating the barbecue or for any other tasks where continuous light is required. - ON/PIR sensor. Puts the fitting under PIR control. When motion is detected it will turn on. When no further motion is detected it will switch off after the time out period has elapsed. This is the factory default mode. OVERRIDE OFF Turns the fitting off.

PRESS BLUE PE CELL BUTTON MODE ONLY FOR DUSK TO DAWN OPERATION

SENSITIVITY There are two settings: - Near distance - only switches on if movement is detected close to the fitting. - Far distance - switches on in response to movement close or further from the fitting. TIME-OUT PERIOD If the light is on because it has been triggered by the sensor it will stay on for the time-out period and then switch off if no further movement is detected. There are 8 time-out periods to choose between.

WIDE BEAM ANGLE. 60° beam angle helps ensure an even spread of light in meeting rooms & reception areas. BRANDED ENEC APPROVED Flicker free LED driver supplied as standard. Suitable for use with leading brands of LED dimmers. Commercial dimming solutions (DALI, switch-dim and corridor function) are also available. OPTIONAL CONNECTOR BLOCK. DD - DALI dimming or Switch Dim DA – DALI dimming. Control with a digital signal compliant with IEC 62386.

PIR – Passive infra-red occupancy sensing with on/off functionality

SD – Switch-dim. Dimmable using a retractive switch.

PIRD – Passive infra-red occupancy sensor with on/off and dimming functions. The driver will be DALI enabled and the sensor will communicate with the driver via a DALI control signal.

CF – Corridor function. A form of step dimming (typically from 10% to 100%) controlled with a momentary mains input. MD – Mains dimming. Dimming via a phase dimmer, switching the mains input at 100Hz.

MW – Micro-wave occupancy sensor. Typically these are housed behind a diffuser or other cover and are widely used in conjunction with corridor function.

PEC – Photo electric cell. This is a simple dusk/dawn photo cell, widely used on some exterior fittings. See page 70 for details.

We have a standard set of suffixes to indicate finishes and colours where a choice is offered: WH – White BK – Black CH – Chrome, with a polished or mirror finish. SCH – Satin chrome.

PE1 – Miniature PE cells sed on streelights and post-top fittings. See page 70 for details. NS – NEMA socket fitted, ready for a PEC to be fitted at a later stage.

EMERGENCY OPTIONS M3 – Maintained 3 hours. Under normal conditions the lights are switched on and off as the users require. In the event of a mains failure the lights will illuminate (usually at a reduced level of 5-15% of normal output) for 3 hours using integral batteries. NM3 – Non-maintained 3 hours. Under normal conditions these lights are off and they only illuminate in the event of a mains failure. STM3 – Self-test maintained 3 hours. All emergency fittings should be tested according to BS5266. This requires a monthly functional test and an annual full discharge test of 3 hours. To automate this function you can specify STM3 on many of our product ranges. Such fittings will carry out their own test regime according to BS5266 and will indicate their test status via a bi-colour indicator LED. See below for a list of fittings on which STM3 is available.

DIMMING MAINS DIMMING

Most LED fittings cannot be dimmed with a conventional mains (or “phase”) dimmer. That’s because LEDs need a driver, and the great majority of drivers are not designed to operate with their supply being switched on and off for a variable period, twice in every mains cycle (which is how a mains dimmer works). The two diagrams below illustrate how leading edge and trailing edge mains dimming work, and most drivers will not function with either type of dimmer. A small number of our products are mains-dimmable (such as our LOWLAND & BERGEN downlights), but if mains dimming is not specifically mentioned in relation to one of our products then the fitting is not mains-dimmable.

HF DIMMING

Many LED fittings can be dimmed if a dimming driver and the appropriate dimming control signal is used. Many fittings can be dimmed if the correct driver is used. To do this the driver is permanently connected to mains power but also receives a dimming control signal, instructing it to increase or lower the light output. On receipt of a dimming control signal a driver will dim the fittings by use of pulse width modulation, amplitude modulation or sometimes a combination of them both.

Pulse width modulation (PWM) entails turning the LEDs on and off. The % “on” time is the duty cycle. The higher the duty cycle the brighter the light appears to be to the human eye. PWM has many advantages as a dimming method (efficiency, simplicity of implementation and low cost), but it has disadvantages too, one of which is the risk of discernible flicker and stroboscopic effects.

PULSE WIDTH MODULATION

Amplitude modulation (AM) involves the gradual reduction of the drive current to bring about a reduction in light output. This method of dimming avoids the risk of visible flicker but it lacks the simplicity and efficiency of PWM. Some driver manufacturers use a combination of PWM and AM to achieve the best possible performance.

CORRIDOR FUNCTION

Typically, a DALI control signal will be generated by a sensor or a lighting control system. Manually operated rotary knobs that generate a DALI control signal are available (at some cost), but if pure manual control is required we would usually recommend switch dim as the simpler and more economical solution.

Switch dim is a means of controlling a luminaire via a retractive switch. It is a low-cost, intuitive and easy-toinstall approach to providing manual dimming control.

Corridor function can be operated by an occupancy sensor, time switch or manual switch. When the switch contact is “made” the light output will be 100%; when the contact is broken the light output will be 10%, or some other value that may be programmed in the driver or control gear.

FLICKER NVC’s drivers take the lead in delivering flicker free performance Almost all LEDs flicker to some extent and this is often increased during dimming. Flicker is caused by Ripple Current - a regular fluctuation of the output of the driver. The best drivers have current ripple of less than <5%, but on others the ripple can be several times this. Many term this as flicker-free The frequency of flicker varies greatly from product to product, but with LEDs it is generally in the range of 100 – 1,000Hz. By comparison, mains flicker (as with switch-start products) is 50Hz and fluorescent Hf products are operating typically at 40,000-60,000Hz.

A digital camera is not the best way to judge flicker. What you see through a digital camera is a function of LED flicker and the camera’s frequency of operation. STANDARDS The drivers used on all our products comply with EN61003, the relevant driver standard, but this does not set a maximum allowed level of flicker. A new standard, IEEE1789, sets maximum allowed flicker percentages for different frequencies of operation, but this is not a European standard, there is no European equivalent at present and IEEE1789 has been criticised for setting very low levels of permissible flicker. Nevertheless, we have adopted IEEE1789, within our specified driver

Frequency effects our perception of flicker; a flicker index of 0.2 might be deemed unacceptable at 100Hz, but acceptable at 300Hz. It is therefore not helpful for a manufacturer to claim “My flicker index is better than yours.” The extent to which flicker matters (or not) is a function of the extent of the flicker and the frequency.

The extent of flicker is measured in two ways, Percent Flicker and Flicker Index. In both cases a low figure indicates better performance. A poor LED fitting might have a percent flicker of 50 and a flicker index of 0.3. A better fitting might have a percent flicker of 17.5 and a flicker index of 0.05.

Reliability Chess uses a mesh network with propriety communication protocol. The protocol is radio agnostic and is used with 2.4ghz (indoor) and 868Mhz (outdoors). It uses synchronised communication and most of the time is silent, it is only active for a small time when sending messages. For this reason the communication signal strength is strong and has a higher range, interference from other systems is minimised.

UNDERSTANDING LEDs Judging the relative quality of different LEDs is not easy, but careful use of LM-80 data is a good starting point. LM-80 is a standardised method of measuring lumen depreciation and chromaticity shift in LEDs over time, and at different operating temperatures. LM-80 was written by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA, or IES more commonly) and it requires representative samples of LEDs to be assesed for a suitable period of time at at least two different temperatures (one of which must be either 55°C or 85°C). Data is typically recorded for several thousand hours and are then projected into the future using the methods and formulae defined in TM-21.

sampling are decided by the LED manufacturer and will depend on the intended use and rated life of the LEDs. Note that LM80 is not a test in the sense that there is a pass/fail result at the end; rather, LM-80 is a standard method of measurement so that lighting professionals can judge the relative merits of different LEDs for a particular application. For general lighting purposes we are interested in two types of data that are recorded – luminous flux (the amount of light emitted) and chromaticity (the colour of that light).

The exact duration of the assessment and the frequency of data

LUMINOUS FLUX In an LM-80 report Luminous flux is expressed as a percentage, with the initial light output, deemed to be 100%. Subsequent measurements usually show a small increase in light output for the first 1,000 hours or so, followed by a very slow decline. The rate of change is generally related to temperature. At higher temperatures the light output will fall more quickly than at lower temperatures. This is why good thermal management is so important for luminaire performance. An LM-80 report will usually show data collected over 6,000 to 10,000 hours. However, when many lighting applications require the life of an LED to be many times this it is necessary to project the data into the future to determine how it might perform after several years of use. There are many ways that data can be projected, some of which would be downright misleading. To avoid this and enable the data of different LEDs and manufacturers to be compared

the IES has written another standard, TM-21. This defines precisely what arithmetic formulae are to be used to project data gathered over, say 9,000 hours, out to 30,000 or more hours. Manufacturers will often talk of L80 or L70. These are the points in the life of an LED when the light output has fallen to 80% or 70% respectively of the initial light output. At NVC when we state the rated life of an LED we mean the running hours taken to reach L70. After L70 has been reached, light output will continue to fall gradually. In general, LEDs do not fail to emit any light as they age; rather their light output and efficiency (lumens/watt) very gradually both fall.

UNDERSTANDING LEDs MEASURING CHROMATICITY SHIFT – CIE1931 v CIE 1976 When chromaticity shift is quantified in an LM80 report it is done with reference to the CIE 1976 diagram. The colour shift is presented as the change to the position of the observed colour on the horizontal (u) and vertical (v) axes. On the graph below, from a typical LM80 report these are summed and presented on the vertical axis as DELTA u’v’. The CIE 1976 diagram is always used because it corrects the chief deficiency of the CIE 1931 diagram. The CIE 1931 diagram is not suitable for measuring chromaticity shift because it is not scaled to the way the human eye works. The easiest way to see this is to compare McAdam ellipses on the CIE1931 diagram with the same elipses on the CIE1976 diagram. A McAdam ellipse describes an area on a colour chart inside which the average human eye can discern no colour difference – the colour at the top, bottom, left or right of the elipse appears to be the same. Compare the two charts shown here – on the 1931 chart the ellipses are of different sizes in different areas of the chart. If the CIE1931 colour space diagram was a map, then its scale would vary from one side to the other and from top to bottom – not very useful if one is trying to measure the distance on the ground between two points. For this reason the CIE developed a new colour space diagram in 1976. Notice that the McAdam ellipses are now of almost identical size right across the diagram. This is a “colour map” with a consistent scale that can usefully be used to measure the distance, in colour terms, that a light source has shifted over time.

CHROMATICITY Chromaticity is determined by plotting the initial light colour on the CIE 1976 colour space diagram.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CHROMATICITY OF LEDS AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES OVER TIME

The temperature at which an LED operates affects the structure of the silicon at the heart of the LED. At higher temperatures the space between the lattices in the crystalline structure of the silicon increases causing a shift to the red end of the spectrum. This explains the difference between the chromaticity of LEDs at different temperatures in the graph.

At intervals the colour of the light emitted is measured and plotted on the colour space diagram. As the graph here shows, over time the colour of the light emitted gradually shifts away from its initial value. With chromaticity shift there are at least two different factors at work – temperature and time.

UNDERSTANDING LEDs CURLING & LAMINATION OF LEDS In addition to the gradual shift of LEDs towards the red end of the spectrum, other colour changes can occur over the life of LEDs, especially if manufacturing defects are present. Two common such defects are Curling and Lamination.

LEDs work by producing blue light which is changed to white light as it passes through a layer of phosphors. The phosphors are usually visible as a yellow-coloured dot at the centre of each LED. To check for peeling or lamination, remove the diffuser (if there

is one) from the LED fitting in question and direct the beam of light directly at a mat-white painted surface. Especially on fittings with only a few LEDs, or where the LEDs are in a single strip, peeling and lamination will be apparent in the form of a blue or yellow “halo” visible around the edge of the light beam where it strikes the surface.

CURLING

In a correctly assembled LED, all the blue light passes through the phosphor layer and is transformed to a consistent quality of white.

CURLING occurs when the phosphor layer starts to peel at the edges, allowing some of the blue light to escape without being transformed to white.

LAMINATION

LAMINATION occurs when cavities appear under the phosphor layer. These have the effect of increasing the distance the light travels through the phosphor layer, so the light becomes more yellow than originally intended.

An enhanced capital allowance is not a tax rebate, loan or grant.
