Saving new memories Dear Class of 2018,

Letter to Seniors, Neuqua Valley Echo, May 2018

For some of you this has been a long-haul, for others you are sad to see your high school career end. Where ever you fall on the continuum, you will remember your high school years. The joy, the tears, the friendships, and the experiences that have molded you and made you stronger, at times thinking you would never get through them. Some call high school a rite of passage, but I believe it is a time for you to mature and experience your life, all while having a safety net of love and support. Once you say goodbye to Neuqua Valley, I wish you all a long and prosperous life ahead. Now is the time to spread your wings and fly. Embrace the life you live and make positive choices. Hold on to your old friends, but do not be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and make new friends and challenge yourself to new experiences. You will still have the love and support, but for many, it may be from afar. Take this summer to rest, enjoy your friends before you part ways, but most of all take time to reflect. This transition time in your life is a time to remember the things that worked well for you in the past. It is also a time to change the things that did not like, and it is even a time to re-invent yourself. Change is the only guarantee in life, take the time to embrace the change and learn from the lessons life has taught you. Class of 2018, I wish you well in all of your endeavors, accomplishments, and even in your challenges!

I am an optimist. Perhaps, that is why I am a teacher and principal and approaching my 30th year of going to high school in a professional role. Year after year and day after day I experience the joy of seeing students do unexpected, amazing, and inspiring acts. I am inspired mostly by every day efforts. For the past four years, I have watched as you, the members of the Class of 2018, have grown from your first days of high school in August 2014 at Freshman Orientation to now preparing for your Commencement at Northern Illinois University on May 27, 2018. You have inspired me! I am an optimist because of you. Frankly, we seem to have entered a time when courtesy and kindness have become My best, quaint or politicized. Truth and honesMrs. Kurth ty seem optional, and both are victims of expediency and spin. I am sure many generations in the past could say that they have experienced the same phenomena. As Dear Seniors, with every high school graduating class I have led to their commencement, my sincerest hope is that you, It is hard to believe our time has come to an end. Watching you grow, both as students the Class of 2018, will correct where we, your elders, and as young adults has been memorable. I have had the great privilege of getting to each have fallen short. In this regard, be kind. Treat others of you these past four year, the real you. The milestones you have made, the challenges you with respect. You are thoughtful, caring, funny, sensitive, and extremely bright. I’m not a heritage, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and parent. You are to each of you, words that become more relevant with each passing day, and undoubtedly “Hello My Name Is” to give voice to lives we might cause anxiety in the process. Take a deep breath. You already know what you want to do not understand. You are Peer Partners and Best Budwith your life which, believe me, is a huge gift at any age. Don’t be afraid to dive in and dies. way back when

Class of 2018, it’s safe to say that we grew up on the internet. As we make small talk in the cluttered hallways, it is common to hear, “I’ll Google that later!”, which is a phrase that has never been foreign to us. Since middle school, Snapchat has been one of the primary sources of communication. Despite its constant layout updates, we continue to use the app because, if we don’t have snapchat, what do we have? This app holds a great significance in our culture: the failed relationships that Snapchat festered, the foolish streaks and the strange stories that went viral that continue to make their way into our mannerisms and conversations. But, even though our past has been defined by an age dominated by technology, we have come to the point in our lives where we get to decide what will define our future. As we go our separate ways, we get to turn a page and write a new story. Although, what’s to come is unclear, the choice is ours to make the most of it.
