Dr. Simon Atkins Highlighting Nevada Farm Bureau Annual Meeting... SPARKS, NV — The 2012 Nevada Farm Bureau Annual Meeting is scheduled November 8-10 at the Gold Dust West in Carson City, Nevada.

World-renowned atmospheric scientist Dr. Simon Atkins will be the featured speaker during the 2012 Nevada Farm Bureau Annual Meeting. Dr. Atkins is scheduled to speak the evening of November 8, 2012. Dr. Atkins, MBA, PhD, DSc is an atmospheric scientist, a doctor of planetary risk, and climate economist. As CEO of Advanced Forecasting Corporation (AFC), a think-tank in planetary risk management, he provides climate change hazard consulting to Dr. Simon Atkins over twenty industries, Fortune 500 businesses, investors, and other individuals that are affected by natural-based perils. Climate disasters as of recent have become of greater concern in strategic planning and monitoring the exposure of one’s asset classes. That is why in a world of necessitating disaster threats advisement, AFC’s detailed reports in Meteorological Intelligence® and climate threat hotspot predictions allow clients to gauge strengths or liabilities in their assets or investments in different market positions or economic sectors all around the world. Dr. Atkins spoke during the 2011 Utah Dairy Convention. Libby Lovig with the Utah/Nevada Dairy Council said “I found Dr. Atkins’ presentation not only entertaining but extremely thought provoking. It gave me the opportunity to think about environmental events on a global scale and the impact it has on us in our part of the world. Very worthwhile.” Dr. Simon Atkins brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise when discussing the relationship between climate and agriculture production. Dr. Atkins’ niche expertise is the study of the impact of climate volatility on commodity yields & prices. Weather is an important topic of discussion, as it has direct effects on agriculture, and more specifically to farmers, ranchers and their businesses. Therefore, Dr. Atkins will bring a lot of important insights to the Nevada Farm Bureau Annual Meeting, especially how weather risks will impact commodity yields & prices – specifically for grains, forage crops, beef and dairy. Dr. Atkins said, “There are increasing climate shifts taking place. From solar cycles to droughts in China and floods in Brazil, I look forward to giving you an important ‘leg up’ on what 2013 holds for the agricultural community.” Nevada Farm Bureau looks forward to seeing you in Carson City!

Farm Bureau Perspectives By Hank Combs We have chosen “Celebrating Our Heritage...Pursuing Our Future as the theme for the 2012 Nevada Farm Bureau Annual Meeting. The meeting is set to give Nevada farmers and ranchers a glimpse into the future of Nevada agriculture and Farm Bureau. Nevada Farm Bureau has planned a terrific agenda for the 2012 annual meeting. For the first time, the annual meeting will be in Carson City. Carson City offers a great venue as it is our state capital. Nevada Farm Bureau policy will be voted on at the Old Capital Building. Nevada Farm Bureau policy is the backbone of our organization and your participation as a delegate is key to making Nevada Farm Bureau successful for future years. Annual Meeting topics will include future climate predictions and how weather affects your farming and ranching businesses. Weather is an important topic of discussion, as it has direct affect on your bottom line. Dr. Simon Atkins brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise when discussing the relationship between climate and agriculture production. Change happens, in life, in business. Farm Bureau is no different. Change is sometimes hard to realize or embrace. With change comes new ideas, new thoughts on improving an organization and completing goals to further enhance Farm Bureau. Kyle Perry from the American Farm Bureau Federation will discuss change with you and how change corresponds with generational differences. Nevada agriculture is important, not only to Nevada but to the world. Our farmers and ranchers are producing more and exporting more than ever before. We join together on an annual basis to connect with each other, talk about our unique agricultural enterprises and set the direction for future policy implementation. Join us in Carson City as we recognize achievements, leaders, and Farm Bureau.

YF&R Discussion Meet—Ready for Some Competition? By: Jamie Perkins, State Chair I am a very competitive person by nature—not sure if that is a good thing or not. My kids have ALL inherited this quality, which causes a little bit more fighting than I would like, because they are always trying to outdo each other. It also makes life kind of stressful when it comes to tests, spelling bee’s, wrestling matches, 4-H events, football games, etc., because mom knows how important these events are to her competitive children and she is hoping and praying that they will do well, and that she will know how to help them learn from it and not be broken hearted if they don’t. But what about all of you out there in Nevada Farm Bureau? Don’t you feel the urge to be a bit competitive sometimes? How about when it comes to winning prize money, a chance to compete on the national level, maybe

even to win a truck? Well, state winners of the discussion meet win $500 and a trip to compete at nationals. The winner at nationals takes home a new GM pick-up. Not competitive? Not interested in prizes? How about personal and professional development? Learning to work in a group/board setting, sharing ideas and opinions, developing leadership and public speaking abilities? How about sharing knowledge and opinions on hot agricultural topics, and learning insight from others also passionate about the field?

YF&R Continued

This year’s Discussion Meet will be held on Friday afternoon and evening during the NVFB Annual Meeting. The five questions that have been designated by American Farm Bureau for the competition are as follows: 1. Certain sectors of agriculture are labor intensive and rely heavily on immigrant workers. What is a fair and balanced immigration policy? 2. What can be done to encourage young farmers and ranchers to return home to the farm if it means living in a rural area that does not provide the same amenities (education, health care, technology) as a metropolitan community? 3. How do we reach out to associate members to provide value to their membership? 4. How should Farm Bureau help prepare its members-both young and old-for transferring operations to the next generation of farmers and ranchers? What is Farm Bureau’s role in encouraging more transfers? 5. How can Farm Bureau play a role to ensure the viability of quality agricultural education programs within our schools?

I found my way into Farm Bureau through the Discussion Meet. My first competition I felt I had no idea what I was really doing—a stay at home mom, several years since college, how could I get into a discussion and say more than—“No, no, don’t do that” or “Goo goo, Gaa Gaa.” I was shocked to find that I could carry on a legitimate conversation about these things, and actually found myself wanting to learn more, loving the chance to interact and to get to know what others views were, what their situations were and how we could bring it together to best benefit our industry. More than anything, competing in the Discussion Meet gave me the opportunity to see Farm Bureau and the good that comes from this organization, and having a chance to share in the educating that is done, and the policy-making process that come from this great organization. So, if you are 18-35 years old, we’d love to have you compete! For more details, email me at Jamie@nvfb.org or look up the rules and regulations on the YF&R blog at www.nvfbyfandr.blogspot.com.
