CHRISTMAS IN JAMAICA
My fundest memories of Christmas stems back to playing Christmas songs with my parents as a little girl. Christmas Eve was spent putting up the decorations and watching my mom bake the Christmas cake for us and our extended family.
is so full and overjoyed.
Christmas in Jamaica is about family, food, fun, presents, food, and food. Oh yeah, it is also about relaxation. We always move on go slow in the work arena... but On Christmas day my mom would put in that is another her favourite records, turn the volume to its story... highest point, and we would sing and dance to the current music. Guests would stop by, but Christmas dinner is reserved for the family. As an adult, my Christmas ritual is to clear out my closet and donate what I can to the Salvation Army. I also picked up my family’s own Christmas Spirit and play my Christmas Carols at home for my own family to enjoy. What I love most about Christmas is the food. Outside of my immediate family, we are always invited to Christmas Dinner with the extended family - cousins, aunts, uncles, spouses of extended family etc. What I look forward to most was the Curry Goat, the Manish Water, the Macoroni and Cheese, and ofcourse the Ham. Then we would always get invited to other family dinners. By the time Christmas is over, leading into the new year, my tummy

CHRISTMAS IN JAMAICA
I can remember many Christmases Past when you can hear your parents grumble no Christmas Dinner this year. Of course Christmas Dinner is the biggest event of the Year topping New Year Eve trust me. And as mush as you hear the parents grumble family members cannot afford to miss the big eating so they always pitch in. It starts with the usual phone call,” So Angie what time is dinner, I have a Ham in my fridge for you” Another phone call would be what you need me to bring this Christmas. Of course Angie would reply, “Bwoy a tired, I caan bother this year!” Then of course one of the usual partners in crime call and seh “Bwoy Angie me have five cake fi bake and mi need you help.” Of course Angie replies, “Mi neva tell you me not doing anything this year”. By the way that five cake generally turn into a mass production of about twenty cakes. As much as Angie (Mommy) tried she has never been able to get out that big Christmas Dinner. Sometimes you even look back and wonder where did all this food come from and how approximately thirty people in your house. Eating, relaxing and just have a lyme and is like the food caan dun. Trust me it is something that you would have to
experience to believe, usually the preparation starts from about two days before except the cake baking which is usually at least two weeks in advanced so the cake get properly soak with the Red Label and some Whites (brings up the flavour). Of course you know couple five gallon buckets of sorrel set, drink off and give away during that period. All this done by that same Angie who caan badda with the Christmas thing this year. Nuh matter how things tight the table has never been anything but laden with food and drink to fete the masses. And all are welcome in that household. In fact if truth be told that Dinner would feed more that thirty persons when you consider the people who are just passing through (hmm, a food unnuh a look, nobody passes though it is like five miles out of the way). In a nutshell I cannot compare Christmas in Jamaica to Christmas in other countries as I spent a few Christmases in different places in North America, while you may be surrounded by family and friends it does not feel the same. In fact it seem very commercial, as I find you can even find shops open on Christmas Day, like that is the main focus (dem people don’t have nuh family to go home to).

CHRISTMAS IN JAMAICA
I don’t remember how old I was but I remember when I was younger being so anxious on Christmas Eve, it seemed like Christmas Day took forever to come so that we could all open our presents. But after all that the best part for me was going to my Grandfathers house for Christmas Dinner and seeing all my family, having a good time and having a wonderful feast because there was always so much food, and having a grand time with everyone. CHRISTMAS IN JAMAICA
After spending many Christmases in the cold winter climates of Eastern Europe for several years, there was nothing like coming home to the decadent warmth of a Jamaican Christmas with the family: mother, father, auntie, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Grandma…. It always begins the same, the family member with the largest house and yard space automatically becomes host to the celebrations, whilst food preparation commences on the night of Christmas Eve and continuing straight into Christmas night, with only a pause to give God thanks on Christmas morning. The freshly procured goat meat cut up and seasoned for its fate of a delicious curry goat and/or mannish water (which seems only to be prepared by someone already “under their waters” on “Christmas mawning”). The shelling of gungo peas for the rice and peas, as troublesome boys chase after girls with startled green caterpillars dangling from a pea pod. The chicken, sectioned or “chopped up” depending on if it is to be served baked, curried, jerked or fried. The Ham already carved and served for breakfast with ackee and salt fish and roast breadfruit, magically getting thinner with each passing half-hour as the one who loves it the most sneaks piece after piece unnoticed, until a shout of “look how yuh eat down di ham! Doan come back in yah come trouble it” is heard echoing through the house. The peeling and washing of potatoes, for the potato salad, and the grating of cabbage and carrots for
the coleslaw. All form part of ongoing process with the interludes between eating filled with fried fish or corned pork, prepared on a coal pot fashioned from an old and unused tyre rim. To see the mixed look of pride and sorrow on grandma’s face as she looks on the 3 generations of children surrounding her, while remembering the loved ones who would never join in celebration again. And knowing how blessed we are to still have her around. Long time friends, lounging about in conversation, and slyly eyeing the preparations with drinks in hand, longing and waiting for someone to say “taste dis and tell me what yu think” or “di soup ready eh nuh…yuh have a cup?” Indicating, that they can now partake of the alluring and mouthwatering scents, which have been wafting through the air since their arrival. The jerk pan, long filled and now smoking sends the signal that it is time to eat. This is my Christmas; our gifts are gifts of food, each prepared by different persons adding their own style of cooking. Christmas night culminating, with the singing of Karaoke, dancing and listening to musical selections from as far back as the 70s to the present with shouts of “rewind and pull it up” sent out, as songs hit the chords of memories of a yesteryear when the food was just as good and the times a little bit sweeter……. Merry Christmas.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
What is the Christmas Spirit? Some persons say that it is the spirit of giving. Some say that it is wanting to spend time with friends and family. Some persons say that it is about the shopping and giving presents. Some say that it is about the birth of Jesus Christ and acknowledging that.
