aylor and I met our sophomore year of high school after I transferred to his school. We quickly became best friends, scooting our desks together in every class we shared. College separated us with him going to University of Kansas and myself going to Wichita State. We caught up every now and then, but for the most part, lost touch. The summer after we graduated, I messaged him after hearing a playlist that reminded me of him (he always had great taste in music). I decided to take a trip to see him and we hit it off right away. Even though we still lived several hours apart, we knew it was finally time to give “us” a shot. After a year of long distance, he proposed in the same spot where we had reconnected on that first trip. Neither of us are ones for attention, so we knew a big wedding was out of the question. We decided to elope with only our immediate families present. Coincidentally, we both had fond memories of similar family vacations to Eureka Springs growing up. It felt like the perfect place for our special day. We took a weekend trip to look at different locations and ended up driving to Buffalo National River. We fell in love with the area – the sound of the river, the exposed cliffsides, the tall grass and sound of wildlife all around – it was perfect for our wedding day. Considering our desire to keep the event small and intimate, my father became ordained so that he could marry us. It meant the world to me.
When the day finally came, it could not have been more perfect. We woke up at 4am to begin getting ready. Deliriously tired from staying up too late the night before, we joked around and encouraged each other to hurry – we thought we could beat the hikers and kayakers along the river (we didn’t). Taking into account our joint love of moody weather, we were thrilled when we saw the clouds and the forecast for a chance of light rain.
Once we found our spot, the adventure began. We eloped on the rocks of the riverbank, drank champagne in a field of wild grass, and even waded into the shallow water of the river bend for a very cold, but worthwhile photo op. The rain began to fall as we left to start our life together. Our little elopement in beautiful Arkansas was more than we could have ever hoped for.
