To Register Modern Fire Conditions And Impact on Building Safety Today’s modern fire environment is hugely different than it was years ago. We have seen saturation in the market place of fuel loads with increased heat release rates. These changing environments expose occupants, firefighters and the building’s structural elements to greater extremes. This has caused the timeframe of operations for firefighters to dramatically change. Historically, response times permitted firefighters to arrive prior to flashover. We are now seeing that it has been reduced to the point where firefighters are arriving when conditions are ripe for extreme fire behavior. These changes have implications for occupants, responding firefighters and how we construct and protect todays built environment. In this class we will look at modern fire dynamics, growth rates, impacts on occupant safety, firefighter safety and structural safety. We will also examine residential construction techniques including traditional dimensional

Continued….. lumber, modern dimensional lumber and engineered floor systems; changes from legacy construction to modern day construction. We will examine their performance under fire conditions and review potential protection strategies. We will also review recent research projects as they apply to the modern fire environment, recent code changes and their impact to firefighter safety and potential avenues to improved occupant safety. This class is designed for and will benefit both the firefighter, building code officials, building inspectors and plans examiners.
