INVITES ONLINE APPLICATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF: Intern - Planning & Zoning (Community Development) part-time with an online application deadline of 10/22/2017 or until 75 applicants have successfully completed the application process. SALARY: $19.69 per hour. Internship typically runs from May through April of the following year, based on a 15-20 hour work week. JOB SUMMARY: This position conducts research and assists with preparing reports for development cases and assignments relating to zoning/development. Conducts site visits including zoning inspections, ensuring site is in compliance with approved plans. Responds to zoning and land use related inquiries from the public. Assists Community Development Department Staff as necessary. Internship typically runs from May through April of the following year, based on a 15-20 hour work week. JOB DUTIES: Responds to inquiries from the public regarding planning and zoning questions, including preparing zoning verification letters and responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Reviews sign permits and certificates of occupancy to ensure compliance with code. Meets regularly with residents, business owners, contractors, and developers. Assists with the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Writes staff reports for special use, variations and other similar requests. Assists with a variety of planning and zoning projects, with a substantial amount of research and writing responsibilities. Conducts site inspections. Prepares maps using GIS. Updates databases pertaining to properties, licenses, and permits. Performs other duties as assigned. May assist with sustainability-related projects. Assists with the preparation and implementation of long range comprehensive planning projects and amendments to the various land use control ordinances. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Studies, or closely related field. In process of obtaining or has obtained a Master's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or a closely related field. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Personal vehicle required with mileage reimbursement. Proficiency with current computer software systems, including email, calendar programs, job specific software, and customer service systems preferred or within the first six months of employment. Candidates should be detail oriented, self-motivated, and possess superior organization and writing skills. Demonstrate a working knowledge of urban planning principles. Knowledge of and ability to utilize ArcGIS (Geographic Information Systems) is preferred.

WORKING/CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Conducting site visits to private properties and construction sites. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Prolonged periods of concentration required for preparing reports and other correspondence and reviewing planning documents and drawings. Ability to cope with numerous interruptions. BENEFITS: Part-Time employees are not eligible for benefits. SELECTION PROCESS: Candidate screening process may consist of an application review, skills testing, employability assessment, interviews, reference checks, and other job-related testing or verifications.
