Personal Attention gets results "It’s all about the small class size," says Alexa Ruiz, a second year Criminology student at NWCC. Instructors have time to focus on each student’s questions. “Before NWCC, I don’t think I ever had teachers that actually cared about the students,” she says. “They make sure you get your money’s worth in whatever class you’re taking.”

English Certificate Program

An academic English pathway

Learn the language and academic skills needed to study at college and university. You will focus on: writing assignments, listening, note taking, and presentation skills. You will also better understand academic referencing, how to avoid plagiarism, and other dos and don’ts needed to succeed at college and university.

Length

The length of the English Certificate program is flexible and there are seven levels. After you register you will take a placement test to find out your entrance level. Most students study 12, 24, 36, or 48 weeks.

English Levels

There are seven levels from English 110 to English 145. Looking for practical experience? Work placements are available in Early Childhood Education, Social Service Worker, Criminology and other programs.

The personal attention leads to tangible results. “I’m taking an online course in Canadian law," Alexa says. “But I have the ability to text or call my instructor if I have any issues. I usually get a text back in five minutes or my call gets answered on the first ring.” The move to Terrace gave Alexa a chance to embrace her independence. She's active in campus politics as a student representative on the NWCC Board of Governors. “It probably has been a highlight of my first year at the College. I learned leadership skills and met amazing people,” she says. Alexa, who was born in Mexico and grew up in Texas, adapted easily to winter weather. “I thought it would get way colder but you could still go outside and stuff.” Criminology is a popular field with international students. Alexa plans to transfer her NWCC credits to the Forensics program at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) next year.

Big-City Girl Loves The Small Town NWCC student Siobhan Von Hawyes has changed from a self-confessed “big-city girl” to one who prefers the warmth and friendliness of a small town. “I absolutely love Terrace,” says the Johannesberg native, “the community here is so lovely. It’s really a great place.”

Social Service Worker Certificate The one-year Social Service Worker Certificate includes two semesters plus a practicum. Social Service Worker Diploma The Social Service Worker Diploma requires successful completion of the certificate and two semesters plus a practicum. Courses in the program are transferable. The University of Victoria also awards additional transfer credits, on an individual basis, for a Social Services Worker Diploma or Certificate.

Siobhan knew right away she had picked the right school when she came to NWCC. “I had a really good experience with the staff on the first day.” Siobhan says the move from South Africa has brought immense change in her life and she has embraced the opportunity. With plans for a teaching career, Siobhan is taking a wide selection of courses including English, geography, history, and math. These transfer to her third and fourth years of an Arts degree at university. High on her list for university placement is the University of Northern British Columbia, also in Terrace. “It would be great just to stay in Terrace,” she says.

NWCC Field (School) of dreams Nik Bukovec and Lara Weis came to Canada from Germany with high expectations. Their NWCC experience surpassed even their wildest dreams. "Honestly, it has been the best experience I could have ever imagined," said Nik. "Every day has been better than the last day." Nik and Lara hit the ground running. On their first day in the country, some other students took them exploring in a jeep and their experience never slowed down from there. They have done everything from a paid work placement on a pristine island in the Pacific Ocean to signing up for local hockey teams to climbing glaciers to getting to know the local First Nations communities. While everything has been a highlight, the field school may get the slight edge. "Everything has been a highlight," said Lara. "But the field school was just so beautiful and so amazing. Every student we were with was so great. And the teachers were the best I've ever had anywhere in the world." The couple have been documenting their experience on their own blog.
