Israel and Anti-Semitism

The past two weeks after the Commons returned from the summer recess has seen the issue of Israel, Gaza and anti-Semitism come to the fore. Israel and Gaza has been a polarising issue in the Commons but most worrying is the underlying anti-Semitism that has become apparent. The outbreak of conflict in Israel and Gaza in July has had a real impact on our streets here in Britain. I have fought hard against the anti-Semitic backlash from the conflict and have been outspoken in my support for Israel’s right to defend itself. On the recent conflict, I made my support known in when I debated on LBC with Liberal Democrat Peer, Jenny Tonge, who once said that Israel “is not going to be there forever”. I have also spoken in Parliament to express my support for Israel and have spoken to Ministers to make the case for Israel. I am also completely opposed to moves by Nick Clegg and Vince Cable to restrict the sale of arms to Israel. This move is entirely political and says more about the Lib Dem’s contempt for the country rather than any concern over the export of arms. Sadly, the Labour party has too turned its back on Israel which I believe has emboldened Cable and Clegg. My concern is that when Parliamentarians show a visceral hatred against Israel, they give (perhaps unwittingly or perhaps not) a green light to anti-Semitism. Undoubtedly, the media coverage by the BBC and others has helped sway some parts of the British public against Israel. The BBC did not fairly represent Israel and Hamas and have failed to describe Hamas as a terrorist organisation who are using innocent civilians as human shields. I am also concerned that where other news agencies correct coverage when the veracity of images comes into question, the BBC does not appear to. I wrote to the Director General of the BBC who accepted Hamas is an internationally proscribed terrorist organisation, but refused to describe them as such. Myself and Conservative colleagues will continue to support Israel and its legitimate concern for the safety of its citizens. I accompanied the Prime Minister on his visit to Israel in March where he reaffirmed his “unbreakable” support for Israel and has recently spoke of his “rock solid” commitment to Israel’s security . This support has continued throughout the recent conflict and I will be

working with Ministers and others to ensure this remains the case. Sadly however, there has been an anti-Semitic reaction to the conflict across Britain. Here in North London, this has thankfully not been the case but incidences have increased elsewhere. We saw the awful occurrences of protests in supermarkets where Israeli and Kosher produce was targeted by protestors. Prior to the protests taking place, I wrote to all the major supermarkets, urging them to be vigilant to anti-Israeli or anti-Semitic activities in their stores. All confirmed they were vigilant in ensuring kosher products and Israeli products were not being targeted whilst on the shelves by anti-Semitic/Israel stickers. They also confirmed that they complied with Government guidance on labelling but were not giving in to demands for a boycott of Israeli goods. There is more to be done not least in confronting the actions of Labour front-benchers like Shabana Mahmood MP who was urging people to carry out the sorts of protests which have terrorised supermarkets across Britain. The behaviour of anti-Israel demonstrators has shocked me. The placards and chants have crossed the line from free speech to hate speech. That is why I met the Home Secretary where I pressed for further arrests of antiSemitic demonstrators. The Home Secretary informed the delegation that new guidance on hate crime has been issued to all police forces which makes specific mention of anti-Semitism. We also discussed how to tackle internet hate crime and on-campus anti-Semitism. We live in tense and worrying times, but I and colleagues are working to ensure our constituents remain safe. Speech and Language Development: Part 1

Speech, language and communication help define us as human. Although it’s known that animals and insects communicate with each other, there’s nothing like the human brain for processing, storing and conveying vast amounts of information, both real and imagined Human communication is a complex twoway process. Although we use our vocal tract for speech, much of our communication occurs non-verbally. We interact with others by looking, listening, anticipating and turntaking, without even realising we are doing so. We also use body language such as eye contact, facial expression, gesture and posture. Learning to communicate is truly an amazing journey. Babies tune into human voices right from the start. Before first words appear (usually around the age of 12-18 months), toddlers need to have acquired various ‘pre-verbal’ skills that set the stage for the emergence of language. These skills include the abilities to listen, attend, discover their surroundings, show interest in other people and play. Over the next few years, children’s vocabulary increases and their sentences become longer and more complex, reflecting the wider range of ideas they wish to convey. It’s important to remember that children develop their skills at different rates, and a delay in language development is not necessarily a cause for concern. There may be related factors such as hearing loss contributing to the delay, which should always be checked out. When concerns arise it’s worth chatting with your local Health Visitor, GP, Nursery Teacher or Speech and Language Therapist. Find some time every day to play and talk with your child Everyday activities such as mealtimes, shopping or walking outside provide rich environments with plenty to talk about. Enjoy song and music with your child Young children are usually very responsive to music. Songs and action rhymes are great for teaching vocabulary and helping children learn to listen and anticipate. Get down to your child’s level Sit where your child can see you easily as you play and interact. Comment Comment on what your child is doing or can see before him. Children’s first words or signs are normally for the things that are most meaningful for them (often peoples’ names or words such as ‘ball’, ‘car’ spoon’ etc). Observe your child carefully, following his interest, and comment on what he is doing, using short, simple sentences. He may well look pleased that you are showing such a close interest in what he is doing and might imitate your words immediately or a bit later on. Reduce questions Life is not a test when you’re 2 years old! Many adults make a habit of pointing to objects or pictures in books and asking twoyear-olds ‘What’s this?’ Questions are not helpful for a young child when she does not yet have the words in her vocabulary to respond. It’s better for adults to say the word themselves. This provides a useful model for children to copy and reduces the pressure on the child to speak. Respond positively Always show interest when your child interacts with you either verbally or without words. If he says a word unclearly, you can say the word back to him correctly, but try to do so in a positive way. So how is FOOD OPTIMIZING the Slimming World eating plan DIFFERENT? Well, it IS a calorie controlled diet but nearly all weighing and measuring associated with such a diet, has already been done for you so that you can focus on filling up on fabulous ‘FREE food’ without stress or feelings of deprivation. Slimming World emphasises food that fills you up, keeps you fuller for longer for the fewest amount of calories. If you’re hungry...you’re doing it wrong. If you’re dieting...you’re doing it wrong. Consider shopping online. 4. Take up Regular Activity: Dusting off your trainers can speed up your weight loss, but it’s important to build up gradually. Introducing additional moderate physical activity as part of the fabric of your life- starting with 7 minutes per day. When I first joined slimming world 5 years ago it took me 20 minutes a day to put my socks on. A flight of stairs was a challenge. I decided to use the stairs at work, then I started walking round the block then running to work. Where am I now? In the last 12 months I have run 2 marathons and cycled 2000 miles. 5. Do It for Yourself: The biggest motivator has to be YOU. If you’re trying to lose weight because you’ve been told to by a GP, or a well intentioned family member, you are you are unlikely to be committed enough to succeed. Do it for you, for your own reasons. Don’t be rushed. Set your own pace, set yourself a weekly target. Be realistic in your set target and time allowed to get there. If you fall off the wagon don’t beat yourself up; just draw a line and start again.
