Do You Need The Gym To Get PSSST...Want to Know a Slim? Secret

I am often asked: “Do you need to do go to the Gym to lose weight or can you lose weight just by eating right?”

tasks such as walking up stairs was a huge chore. It took 25 minutes every day to put my socks on. In the Past six months I have run two marathons and cycled 1200 miles.

Losing weight should be simple. You just ensure that you have more calories going out than you have coming in. Simple -right?

How did I get from one extreme to the other?

Well, with Slimming World’s Healthy Eating plan called “Food Optimizing” it really is simple, because all the weighing and measuring has already been done for you to ensure that you can have a stomach full of food and a head free of the stress of calorie counting. Our parallel plan called “Body Magic” is about increasing moderate physical activity as part of the fabric of your life, starting with just 7 minutes extra per day. Increasing physical activity means more calories out, so it can help speed up weight loss, but you have to get the get the FOOD right first! Can you lose weight just by getting the Food right? This is especially a concern for members of mine with limited physical mobility. A & B both walk with assistance. A has lost 5 stone 3 lbs, and B has reduced her BMI from 30.6 to 23.6 in 9 months. C is a superstar. He joined my group in November 2013 with his mum. They both started food optimizing 100% and C was also cycling most days. By March 2014, they had both lost 3 stone. Then, a pre-existing back condition got worse, and he was unable to leave the house or do any physical activity. He continued food optimizing 100% while waiting for a major operation; and during his recovery over the last few months. Two weeks ago he came into group and he had lost 5 stones during 5 immobile months. In addition, his BMI has gone from 40 to 25!

Part of my training for the Jerusalem Marathon (the hilliest in the world) was running up Brockley Hill in Stanmore. This is a very steep hill which is encased in a tunnel of trees, and for most of its length you cannot see daylight at the end of the road, or the top of the hill. When I first started running up it, I could not look up at the hill, because it was so daunting, so scary, the end so far off and unreachable. If I looked at it, I just would stop...and give up... beaten by the realisation of how far I had to go. Now when I run up it – and a few weeks back I did it twice one after the other- I can look the hill in the face- straight in the eye! When asked how I am able to run up it, I normally tell people...”well, I’ve done it before, so I know I can do it again”. However, I had an insight on the second run up into what I mean by: “I’ve done it before”. Near the top of the hill, gravity drags you back and you feel really heavy and your feet feel like they are in treacle. Nowadays I get that feeling at the top of Brockley Hill. When I was at my heaviest, I got that feeling when I first used the stairs instead of the lift, first walked round the block, ran for 10 meters or swam a length. I did it then, I can do it now too. I tell my members that when they start to walk or Zumba, the grit and determination that it takes to just START will be the same determination that gets them up their own seemingly impossible hill to their Weight Target and the sunlight that they will see at the top.

However, increasing physical activity can produce benefits that go beyond weight loss, beyond the release of endorphins that can give you a temporary “high”. When I first joined Slimming World in 2009 I weighed 28st. Simple

In the last article we looked at some general strategies for helping young children develop their language skills. Today we’ll look at how play can help develop language and communication. For many parents, their own early childhood is a dim and distant memory and they can barely remember what they used to like to play with. They should be reassured in knowing that pretty much any activity that they can do with their child will be of benefit, as their child is aware that his or her parent enjoys spending special time with them, and values their company. However there are activities that are particularly helpful in developing language and communication. Here is a selection of some of them. ‘Home corner’ type activities (eg making pretend meals and teddy tea parties) as well as ‘play dough’ type activities are great for targeting the development of communication. They replicate many of the actions that young children see on a daily basis, (eg ‘eat’, ‘drink’, ‘mix’ ‘open’) and provide the language to go with, including the names of food and other everyday objects. These activities can also help develop children’s social interaction skills and appreciate the concept of sequencing (‘first we do this….next we do this...’) Cars, trains and building bricks are activities that many parents enjoy carrying out with their child and can help develop social interaction skills when parents maximise opportunities such as sharing, offering, receiving and waiting.

If you can, resist the temptation to make your child ‘do the puzzle the right way’! Learning by trial and error is an important part of a child’s development and also presents lots of opportunities for communication. For example when pieces won’t fit or get stuck, it’s time to comment (‘oh no!), laugh or request help. Due to the routine nature of puzzles and shape sorters (ie repetition of the same action) there are plenty of chances to practise the same words (eg ‘in there’, ‘stuck’, ‘uh-oh!’ etc.) Always remember to sit where your child can see you easily as you play and interact. Keep your language simple and comment on what you can see or what you are doing using simple words. Always respond positively when your child interacts with you, either verbally or without words. It’s important to remember that children develop their skills at different rates, and a delay in language development is not necessarily a cause for concern. When concerns arise it’s worth chatting with your local Health Visitor, GP, Nursery Teacher or Speech and Language Therapist.
