FREER Anti-Semitism

As a Vice-President of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APG) on anti-Semitism it is my hope that one day, we won’t need the APG. Sadly anti-Semitism remains a problem, and one that appears to have the ability to reinvent itself in new guises. Anti-Semitic incidents reached record levels in July, when the Community Security Trust recorded the highest ever monthly total of such incidents in the UK. The trust has been keeping records since 1984, and over the past two years it has exchanged data with various police forces to improve respective accuracy. In July, 302 incidents were recorded, which represents an increase of more than 400% from the 59 incidents that were recorded in July 2013. Of the 302 recorded incidents, 51% involved direct reference to the ongoing conflict. All incidents require the recording of evidence of anti-Semitic language, targeting or motivation alongside any anti-Israel sentiments. Of the anti-Semitic incidents recorded in July, 101 involved the use of language or imagery relating to the holocaust, and 25 of those showed evidence of far-right political motivation or beliefs. Most commonly, references to Hitler or the holocaust were used to taunt or offend Jews, often in relation to events in Israel and Gaza. People seeking to raise awareness of the problems in Gaza have used imagery of Nazi death camp inmates. Of the 302 incidents, 25% took place on social media. Yet, the reporting often relies on people reporting incidents themselves rather than relying on data produced by the Police. So inevitably the reporting is an underestimate. Having said that, the frameworks in the UK for dealing with antiSemitism are exemplars. The APG is authoritative in Parliament, it has looked recently at antiSemitism in Sport, the issue of hate preachers on campus and most recently has been increasing pressure on social media outlets like twitter or Facebook. The Police have established and effective procedures with outstanding support from organisations such as the CST and Shomrim. Whilst the Home Secretary recently issued new, tougher guidance, on anti-Semitic behaviour during demonstrations, on-line abuse remains a problem. There is a fine line between freedom of speech and abuse. Social networks allow keyboard warriors to hide behind pseudonyms, and thus when people report the abuse social networks can take too long to deal with the complaints so that

MP

the offending comments are removed quickly. I’ve been called a ‘Shabbos Goy’ (it wasn’t meant affectionately); a “Jewish Pig” and “Jew lover” – I just shrug them off as part of being an MP. Yet when we have kosher food removed from shelves, swastikas daubed on walls or youths shouting abuse from a car on Golders Green Road the dangerous undercurrent of anti-Semitism can’t be shrugged off. Whilst such insults are rare, the worrying trend today is that anti-Zionism is becoming interchangeable with anti-Semitism. Objections to the policies of Israel are legitimate. Associating Israel’s actions with the Jewish Community is not. The imagery used to decry Zionists is all too familiar. References to the Zionist conspiracy, the malevolence of an all-powerful covert group are depressingly similar to the insults used in the past. So when there is a spike in incidents and our awareness is raised, it is easy to lose sight of just how safe the UK is and how much good work is being done. In Parliament the APG has established a unique Whitehall government working group on anti-Semitism; an agreement for all police forces to record anti-Semitic hate crimes; the publication by the police of the first official anti-Semitic hate crime statistics; a funding agreement for the security needs of Jewish faith schools in the state system; a Crown Prosecution Service review and action plan; the creation of a Government-backed school-linking programme; research into modern discursive anti-Semitism funded by the Government; the appointment of a UK envoy for post-holocaust issues; two ministerial conferences and international action plans on internet hate; a full inquiry into electoral conduct and resultant action from key agencies; and work with Government that has led, among other successes, to the publication of a guide by the Society of Editors to editing online newspaper comment boards. Sadly our work is still needed and continues. Whilst we remain diligent and vigilant, we mustn’t lose sight of the safe and tolerant society that we are fortunate to live in. Mr Mike Freer is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Finchley and Golders Green. Readers are invited to submit questions/concerns to the North West Circular (info@northwestcircular.com), regarding Central Government matters, where Mr Freer has kindly agreed to respond to them via this column.

Maths & Music - What ‘s The Connection?

“Well they do say the two go together – people who are good at one are often good at the other”. Such are the frequent responses I get on telling people that I teach both Maths & Music. But is it true? It‘s an interesting hypothesis to test. Instinctively one thinks these subjects are opposites – dry, logical Maths, emotional, soulful Music. But consider this… Patterns Maths is full of amazing patterns. In the 9 times table, to take one classic example, the sum of the digits of all the answers = 9, and the 10 digit goes up while the unit digit goes down; A fact that never fails to impress students. Similarly, in Music, there are countless patterns that enhance the learning process. E.g. every major scale has the same ‘step-pattern’ – i.e. set intervals between successive degrees of the scale; 1 ,whole tone, 2 whole tone 3, half-tone 4 etc etc. With this information, and knowledge of the 12 notes in music, students can work out for themselves how to play 12 scales in one go. Similarly, with arpeggios, chords and other scale types.

Statistics If you have a fixed starting note in a melody then there are realistically about 20 possibilities for the choice of 2nd note - 10 higher and 10 lower notes to choose from. Then 20 for the 3rd, then 20 for the 4th etc. So for just a 5-note melody/riff there are 20x20x20x20 = 160,000 possibilities! And that’s without taking account of the different time values each note can have. It’s very rare that people have been successfully sued for ripping off others’ songs. One high-profile example was George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord - deemed to be the same as ‘He’s So Fine’ by The Chiffons. A 3-note refrain meaning only 20x20=400 possibilities. Relatively easy to accidentally (on purpose?) come up with the same chorus leading to a multi-million selling hit in this case, making it well worthwhile to bring to court! Other areas to consider include: how notes played depend on length, width and tautness of string and how proportion plays a part in harmonics; no. of chord possibilities; modes; circle of fifths and fourths; inter-relationship between notes above and below tonic - all manner of fascinating stuff.

Additionally, in violin and guitar, all scales (and bar chords/moveable chords) can be shifted up and down the neck and played with exactly the same fingering, but starting at different points on the string. Knowing patterns simplifies and enhances the learning process.

In short, maybe it’s not so surprising that aptitude in both subjects goes hand in hand.

Rhythm Rhythm starts with time signature which is essentially a fraction. The number on the bottom tells you the beat value (1, ½ , 2 etc) and the number on top - how many of them in each Bar. A fraction’s denominator tells you the size of each part, the numerator - how many of these parts. Structure

Max Witriol studied Maths at Manchester University and subsequently embarked on a music career playing in various bands as well as solo and duos, song-writing and teaching. He plays a wide variety of material from Elvis to Shwekey, and is currently completing an album of Jewish Parody songs with the working title “Chareidi – The Musical”. He can be hired for Birthday Parties, Sheva Brachot, Melave Malkas and Chanukah events, as well as private tuition in guitar and violin, and in Maths up to A-level.

Songs tend to be structured in set numbers : 4x4 bars per line, 4 lines per verse, 4 lines chorus 2 lines middle 8(2 x 4 bars) etc. Perhaps the set structures in music appeal to a mathematical mind, especially when it comes to music analysis and composition.

So why are there so few songs about quadratic equations and differential calculus? Mmmm…

DRUCKER

Exercise? But It’s Freeeeeezing Out There!

Physical activity is a great way to aid weight loss as part of a healthy eating programme like Slimming World’s Food Optimizing. However, when the days are shorter & it’s freezing cold, it’s oh-so-easy for our usual exercise routines to take a back seat. These 10 super-motivating strategies can help to restore your get-up-and-go. 1. It may be cold outside, but you don’t need to be think of ways to stay toasty. ‘Warm ears and warm hands make for a much happier workout, so invest in an ear-covering headband or a hat, and a pair of gloves,’ says winter runner Claire Benson. ‘Then pop your kit near the radiator for a little while before you put it on. Carry warm water in your drinks bottle – it’ll keep your hands warmer and will have cooled down by the time you drink it. 2. Use a technique called ‘reframing’: think of a negative, and look for a positive spin on it. ‘It can really make the difference in getting you up and moving,’ says Tom Marien, who runs the outdoor training company One Element. Here are some good examples... Negative: it’s dark outside. Positive: no one can see you clearly, so why not run a little faster or power-walk instead – it doesn’t matter if you go red. Negative: it’s raining. Positive: loads of people will be sitting on their sofas – and you aren’t, which makes you awesome. 3. Don’t think – just jump out of bed and go. Studies at the University of Alberta, Canada, found that people who think about exercising for a while before they set off are less likely to do it. 4. Get an indoor ‘plan B’. Say you wanted to go to Zumba, but it’s icy outside and you don’t feel safe driving – it’s not a problem if you have something else you can do at home. Here are some suggestions... •If you do Zumba: buy a Zumba DVD or borrow one from your local library, or join in workouts on YouTube •If you run: get a skipping rope – it works even more muscles.

5. Go walking for 30 minutes, five days a week – it could reduce your risk of catching a common cold. 6. If you find it hard to leave the house once you get home, cover up the TV with your workout gear. According to US obesity researcher Dr Craig Johnston, this means you must make a conscious decision to choose the TV over your workout. Sometimes the TV will win, most times it won’t. 7. Download an amazing app (Moves by ProtoGeo, MapMyWalk, RunKeeper are all Free), then make a wall-chart tracking your steps, miles or minutes. As you add to it, you’ll find that you won’t want to leave gaps. 8. Beat that winter pallor. ‘Exercise revs up the circulation and gives you colour,’ says Kesh Patel from Premier Training International. 9. Don’t let the kids be the only ones playing in the snow. ‘Join in!’ says Fitness First’s Lee Drabble. ‘You burn heaps of calories while making snowmen, throwing snowballs or pulling sledges.’ If it hasn’t snowed, try other winter ideas with them like ice skating or hitting the indoor ski slope. 10. Have something warm to look forward to when you get home, suggests Lee Drabble. ‘I tell people to run a bath using only hot water. By the time you get home from your walk or run, it should have cooled enough for you to get straight into [test it first!].’ Or, at the gym, hit the sauna. Not only will it warm you up, studies show that the heat may help boost fitness by working the heart. Treat yourself to bubbles or a bathbomb. The Bottom Line... Stay Positive. There’s nothing like exercise endorphins to beat the winter blues. Nothing! Adapted from an article on Slimmingworld.com Michael Drucker has been a Slimming World Consultant for 4 years. He joined Slimming World in 2009 weighing 28 stone. He lost 14 Stones, the first 13 in 14 months. He runs and cycles in the rain & snow.

CIRCULAR MATTERS

1 What is Light Up a Life? Light Up a Life is Tikun’s annual 10-day long volunteer project. With hundreds of participants, it aims to galvanize the Jewish community to fill in the gaps left by regular workers and volunteers going on holiday during the nonJewish festive period. 2. Why does Tikun run this? The project is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, there really are a lot of people who rely on the help given by volunteers throughout the year. They are the ones most affected by the holiday season. Secondly, and perhaps equally as important, is the Kiddush Hashem that it makes. Jewish communities around the world were affected by the fighting in Israel this summer. Perhaps now more than ever, it’s important to show the communities, in which we live, that we are not insular – that we care about others. 3. How does it benefit me? Most of us are not celebrating during this time so it is an easy way to get involved. It only takes a small deed to make a big difference to someone’s life. I recently saw a poll that showed that people who volunteer feel better about themselves and are more optimistic about life. While this is not a reason to volunteer, it is a great by-product.

mins with... 4. What is an example of volunteering that I would do? There are a number of different activity groups to choose from. They range from helping out in a Holocaust Survivors Centre or hospice, soup and tea runs for the homeless, to dropping off chocolates at hospitals and family orientated cooking clubs. With over 100 different projects and 500 volunteering positions, there is something fun and meaningful for everyone. 5. How do I get involved? All you have to do is to go to our website – www.tikun.co.uk/lightupalife - and register for the volunteering project of your choice. You can view the projects by activity category and by date. After that, you just need to show up with a smile. 6. This sounds like a great project but I am away during that time – is there anything else I can do? Definitely. You can de–clutter your home and get rid of all those things taking up space. We are collecting items such as warm winter clothing and toiletries for six separate charities. You can also donate money to the project. This will ensure that we have everything we require to help those in need. More details can be found here: http://www.tikun.co.uk/lightupalife/packathon.php 7. Where can I go for more information? For more information you can either visit our website – www.tikun.co.uk/lightupalife - or you can call 0208 912 1213. Tikun is an Orthodox Jewish charity based in Temple Fortune. As its name implies, Tikun’s mission is to improve our world by guiding Jews towards their ancient mission of being a shining moral example by teaching them principles of wellbeing, Torah’s wisdom and responsibility to improve their world.
