POLITICS MATTERS Education, Education, Education - Mike FREER At the heart of this Government’s commitment to delivering real social justice is our belief that every child deserves an excellent education, and that every day that they spend in school should be one that helps them to fulfil their potential. This week we introduced a new Bill to improve school standards across the country. Thanks to the hard work of teachers across the country, the reforms of the last Government and the innovations pioneered by the Government before that, championed by the former Schools Minister Lord Adonis, we have seen dramatic improvements in English education. The Academies program started under the last Labour Government and we have expanded that and introduced parent-lead ‘Free Schools’ which have proved popular with the Jewish Community (two of the three ‘free schools’ opened to date are Jewish schools). Education remains a focus area of the Government. Since 2010, 100,000 more six-year-olds are on track to be confident readers because of our focus on phonics; the EBacc has led to a 71% increase in pupils taking core academic subjects at GCSE; and there are now 1 million more pupils being taught in schools that are ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ — a record high. In short, expectations have been raised, standards have been restored, and teachers and parents have been empowered.

But there is more to do. No child should have to put up with receiving an education that is anything less than good, so we must go further. We are now making plans to strengthen our ability to intervene more swiftly in failing schools and to properly tackle, for the first time, schools that are coasting. The measures in the Bill are designed to speed up the process by which underperforming schools are transformed, ensuring that there is no delay in giving our children the education they deserve. Bureaucracy can’t be allowed to delay, or stop, our children receiving a good education Across the world, Governments are recognising that teachers and leaders in education know best how to run their schools. Our Government is no different. We believe in a school-led system where experts have greater freedom but within a strong framework of accountability. That is why we want more schools to benefit from the freedom that academy status brings. Importantly, children with special needs or disabilities must get the best possible education that will enable them to fulfil their potential. That is what the education and healthcare plans

Working with other local schools, they are providing a very innovative and exciting education. No one can argue that we shouldn’t transform failing schools. In the past, such transformation could be delayed or even blocked altogether by pressure groups or unions with ideological objections to transferring power away from town halls to outstanding heads and teachers. The new Bill makes it clear that an academy order will be issued for all schools judged inadequate by Ofsted, enabling them to become sponsored academies. SPEECH MATTERS SPEECH TIPS - Yossi Goldberg Allow me to share with you some tips for designing a speech. If you can do this well, you can simply put me out of business. The very first decision to make, before you think about content, is how long you are going to speak for. It may seem a bit unnecessary, but it’s absolutely vital. If you know what timeframe you have, you will be more careful when choosing your content. Say for example, you have been given a 3 minute slot. You could not attempt to relate your whole life story during that time. But if you were given a 1 hour slot, then you could do so. By the way, when you are determining how long you should speak for, you should know this. Most speech writers advise people to keep a speech to 2 – 3 minutes long. That’s about 300 words. It may not sound like a lot, but much can be said. Be warned, your listeners may lose interest if you go on for too long. Now think about the message you want to share. If it’s at a Bar Mitzvah that you’re speaking, perhaps you want to give the boy a “direction in life” prep talk. Or if it’s a wedding,

maybe you want to give the young couple some marriage tips. If you are a host you may just want to thank the guests and others for their favours etc. Once you are clear about the message you want to give, then you will find appropriate material for that message. You will be able to quickly regard something as unsuitable for your speech if you know the aim of your speech before hand. Most speech writers advise people to keep a speech to 2 – 3 minutes long. That’s about 300 words. Let’s just imagine for a moment what would be if you don’t decide on a particular message. You are speaking at an engagement party and you have a 10 minute slot. In your research for material, you come across a Dvar Torah about marriage and being faithful to one another and you jot it down to say over. You then hear your Rabbi in Shul tell an inspiring story about kindness and you feel you want to share it in your speech. Then you come across a book with 1001 funny jokes and you
wonder if you should be saying something funny. When you try and put this all together, it won’t flow easily. Your message will not be absolutely clear in the end. Besides, it’s a shame to waste your precious time exploring books of jokes when in fact you really want to say a serious speech or vice versa. Now that you know how long you want to speak for and you’re clear on the message you want to deliver, you are ready to think about the content. Mins with... What is Jewish Digest?
Jewish Digest is a new charity intending to support people in the Jewish Community suffering from Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. These conditions are types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD. IBD is a chronic condition that can flare up without warning, although there may also be periods of remission and relatively good health. At present there is no cure for IBD but a range of drugs and sometimes surgical intervention can give long periods of relief from symptoms.
Why was Jewish Digest set up?
As its name suggests, the charity has been set up with the Jewish community in mind. That’s because Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis are around four times more prevalent in the Ashkenazi Jewish population. This means there are a large number of people living with it in our community. We hope to raise awareness and reduce the sense of stigma, provide sufferers and their families with the support they need and bring to public attention new trends in coping

The Jewish Digest website offers information about all aspects of IBD, lifestyle tips and advice, summaries of recent and ongoing research together with articles from medical professionals, interviews with people living with IBD, gut friendly recipes as well as a forum that allows people to exchange views, opinions and information with others in similar situations. We have collaborated with Crohn’s and Colitis UK, a national charity, to provide wide ranging information about all aspects of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. For those who live with the ups and downs of an IBD related condition, this user friendly, easy to navigate support website could make the difference between simply putting up with the demands of this unpredictable disorder and learning how to alleviate some of its symptoms. amazing feedback as this has been a massive gap that has needed to be filled in the Jewish Community. People are so grateful that we have raised awareness of these all too common conditions. The set-up of Jewish Digest was privately funded but we are now looking for more funding to help us continue and expand our services.
