POLITICS MATTERS SUMMER BUDGET - Mike FREER - MP for F i n c h l e y & G o l d e r s G r e e n This week saw the Summer Budget billed as a Budget to keep us moving from a low wage, high tax, high welfare economy to a higher wage, lower tax and lower welfare country. A country that lives within its means. If you want to see what happens when a country lives beyond its means, and then refuses to take tough decisions, just look at Greece.

The starting point was to cut taxes for working people so they keep more of what they earn. We inherited a system that taxed people then handed some of it back in working benefits. Crazy!

It’s simpler and fairer to let people keep more of their own money.

The personal allowance will rise from £10,600 to £11,000 from April next year. The threshold at which the 40p rate is paid will rise from £42,385 to £43,000.

Working people have contributed to the austerity measures we’ve been through. Britain deserves a pay rise so we will introduce a new compulsory National Living Wage for all working people aged 25 and over. It will start next April at £7.20 an hour and we expect it to reach £9 by 2020. It will mean two and a half million people get a direct pay rise.

We want to see more people into work so we’ve cut the jobs tax for firms. From 2016 a firm will be able to employ 4 people full time

on the new National Living Wage and pay no national insurance at all.

Welfare reforms continue so the system is fairer and more affordable. It’s not commonly known but Britain is home to 1% of the world’s population; generates 4% of the world’s income; and yet pays out 7% of all the welfare spending. This is not sustainable so the Chancellor set out a package to save £12 billion from welfare whilst ensuring

Support for the elderly, the vulnerable, the disabled and pensioner support remains. For pensioners the ‘triple lock’ (where the state pension must go up by at least £2.50pw or RPI or National Average Earnings); and contrary to opposition scaremongering the Government is not going to tax or means-test disability benefits.

Putting working-age benefits on a more sustainable footing. We will freeze working-age benefits for four years to 2019/20 – addressing the issue of benefits growing faster than wages since 2008; focus Tax Credits and

Universal Credit on those on lower incomes. The support provided to families through tax credits or Universal Credit will be restricted to two children for new claimants; reduce the benefit cap from £26,000 to £23,000 in London – so people don’t get more on benefits than working families; and social housing tenants on higher incomes – above £40,000 in London- will be required to pay rents closer to the market rate so they aren’t subsidised by other working people.

Parenting & Holidays – Can Both Work Together? - MRS J NEMETH

The hol idays are l ooming Q . in f ront of me! How can I ensure we al l have a good time throughout – both on hol iday and at home – and al so can I manage to have a bit of a hol iday too or is that too much to expect?

A . Holidays can indeed be overwhelming – 5 long weeks looming ahead with little or no structure; maybe a holiday to pack up for; no routine to rely on; no school to rely on for a bit of a break!

But there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail!

When children know what’s going to happen, they feel secure and motivated and this results in them getting on with their own games til the activities begin. It’s really motivating for children if you put up – on the fridge is fine – a weekly calendar. What seems mundane to you can be an event for them – many children enjoy and look forward to going to Tesco/library and even park.

And then you can build on those events – “Who would like to check my cupboard/fridge/write the shopping list/collect library books etc…?”...this extends the event and gives children a great sense of responsibility.

Older children may not be that thrilled with going with Mum to Tesco! However this does not avoid the need for them to also have a plan – maybe their own plan for the week, but encourage it and talk about it – this is great bonding time too!!

Help Your Child Find

His Place...

Holidays are a great opportunity to help your child find his place positively. If you have a child who is struggling – in relationships, with his work, with friends, this is a great time to help build his self- esteem and help him reframe his self-image. Look for your child’s strengths – and this can be in anything. Our mantra is “You can only build on a strength – not a weakness!” and this strength can be absolutely anything – from being able to use a screw driver to being a great listener; from being able to draw creatively to being able to amuse kids. Whatever it is –

build on it – find opportunities during the holidays to help him feel good about what he can be successful in.

In Al Pi Darko we talk about the “overspill effect”: if you imagine self-esteem as contents in a glass – as your child is successful in what he is good at, the cup slowly but surely fills up. Then when it reaches the top and he carries on being successful, the contents overspill and what spills over is what gives confidence to your child to actually take himself outside his comfort zone and attempt things that he had previously avoided. Try it – it really works!

Once children feel the consistency you’ll see there is actually no need to discipline!

And What About Me?

“Children respect parents who respect themselves”.

Do you make yourself a doormat and your children wipe their feet on you – or do your children respect what you say and do and give you space to parent? If children feel respected, they happily give respect back. If children feel emotionally neglected, bullied or shouted at, they will find it very hard to respect you as a

parent. Think about it – be honest with yourself – and you can work out yourself where your work lies.

In discussing holidays with the children, don’t hesitate to stake your claim to a break too – and whatever suits you. You may revel in an hour a day to yourself or prefer a half day off per week. You may like to have

a lie-in or you may prefer the evenings to yourself.

Whichever it is, tell the children what you need and plan the days around it.

What is SPT?

SPT, which stands for Shaarei Parnosoh Toiva, is a charitable organisation based in Stamford Hill that provides solutions to problems of employment and employability. We exist to assist men from the Stamford Hill community to find meaningful and sustainable employment.

What services does SPT provide?

One of the main challenges for members of the community is the gap in skills and knowledge. Our priority over the last few years has been to provide a service that allows people to reduce this gap, and to pick up the training and qualifications that help form the basis of job-readiness. We offer training courses in a variety of subjects, including functional skills such as English and IT, as well as vocational based training, such as AAT accountancy and graphic design. We work in partnership with reputable and experienced learning institutions such as Hackney College, and with public sector organisations such as Hackney and Haringey councils.

When and why did SPT start?

SPT began operations in 2012 with the support of local

community activists and leaders.

Over the last decade or so there has been an increasingly challenging set of circumstances for young men trying to build a career for themselves.

Historically, the community was smaller and the economy was such that it allowed people to join existing and successful family businesses. However, the community has grown exponentially and this is no longer possible. Our aim is to provide a unique and tailor-made service to every one of our clients.

What plans do you have for further development of the organisation?

We aim to provide a ‘one-stop shop’ to cater to the greatest needs of the community. This of course includes further and more varied training courses, but also includes other areas such as a business advice service. This is a service that allows those with existing but struggling businesses to consult with a business professional to

assist in creating financial stability for the company.

Furthermore, we are looking to implement a new-business start-up service that will allow those with an idea for a new business to consult with experienced and successful businessmen from the community who can give advice and feedback on the business idea. This will be followed by support with the writing of a business plan and finally, with incorporation of the business.

We will also aim to support our new-business clients with a business hub that will allow them to rent business space at a fraction of the market value, and also gives them the benefit of paying only for the time they need to use the office space and allows them the freedom to spend time out of the office with clients, viewing merchandise etc.

We also have plans to provide a tailor-made careers advice service whereby people can meet with a qualified and experienced member of staff who can glean from an initial consultation which skills, strength and aptitudes the client has, and based on that, formulate a personal and individual pathway to an appropriate career.
