WILL THE REAL UKIP PLEASE STAND UP?
So UKIP win the second by-election caused by an MP deciding to change parties, his policies and his views. Constituents are rightly confused when an MP spends their political life arguing for one policy only to say the same policy would be a disaster once they have been re-elected under the new flag of convenience. It could be argued, not unreasonably, that any MP in one of the big parties has to subsume their doubts about aspects of a particular policy because they support the ‘big picture’. The sum is greater than the parts they disagree with. Fair enough. That doesn’t really stack up when the policy is hyper-local and a policy on which the MP has a complete free hand. So when an MP flying the blue flag says I support this development of new homes in my local neighbourhood and then opposes it when the MP is under the purple flag; it’s no wonder people get disillusioned. Yet we see this flip-flopping of views by UKIP not just in local constituencies, but nationally too. In the south UKIP are arch deficit reducers, benefit reformers and privatisers of the NHS. In the North of England, they campaign to protect benefits (and so deficit reduction goes out of the window) and oppose any modernisation of the NHS. This marks them out as the new LibDems, a party renowned for saying different things in different parts of the country. Undoubtedly some UKIP supporters are ardent anti-EU, others simply are using UKIP as the new party to use for their protest vote. Business as usual then. However, there is a dangerous underbelly to UKIP that people may not have spotted. We can ignore the flip-flopping on policy - I’m more worried about the unpleasant racism that lurks beneath the surface. The formal alliance between UKIP and the Polish KNP party should make any decent voter recoil. The KNP are racists and Holocaust deniers. In July, KNP leader Janus Korwin-Mikke called for the abolition of the minimum wage in Britain by claiming that “four million n****rs” lost their jobs after John F Kennedy introduced a US national minimum wage in 1961.
He also claimed Adolf Hitler “was probably not aware that the Jews were being exterminated”. The KNP are so extreme that, it’s reported that even Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French BNP, refused to form an alliance with them. Make no mistake, this isn’t just a vague grouping of MEPs getting together and agreeing to rub along, to co-operate with each other. UKIP have confirmed they actively courted the party. When he won his seat in the recent Clacton by-election, Douglas Carswell gave a speech in which he said “We must be a party for all Britain and all Britons, first and second generation as much as every other.” Yet, Mark Reckless – the latest MP under the UKIP flag of convenience suggests repatriating foreigners. This of course was not long after Farage himself said some new arrivals should be refused entry on health grounds. Once we allow Parties in the mainstream (even if with just 16% poll support) to suggest this type of immigrant should be repatriated or that kind of applicant should be refused because they are unhealthy, we are on a slippery slope. Why stop at deporting certain nationalities. Why not widen it to people of certain colours, of a certain race or religion. Repatriation is an extreme reaction but if the debate has traction, then it isn’t long before people start targeting people for being singled out because they are different. Alarmist? Perhaps, but this is a party that believe once women have had children they are less valuable economically than when they were childless. A party that not only gets into bed with holocaust deniers and racists, but espouses a creed that finds women, or people of different nationalities fair game to be singled out – is dangerous. So a UKIP vote is a dangerous protest vote. Protest in haste – repent at leisure! Mr Mike Freer is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Finchley and Golders Green. All services are supported by an expert Medical Advisory Panel, under the Rabbinical guidance of Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu. Who else do you help? Chana also provides Well services. Offering men, women and teenagers comprehensive and
information relating to reproductive health and wellbeing, Chana helps people to tackle issues before they become a problem. How is the charity funded? The charity relies totally on private donations and runs a number of fundraising initiatives. I have heard a lot about Chana’s Tea-cember. What is that and how do I get involved? This December is the third annual Tea-cember campaign, where people are encouraged to host a tea party and invite their friends and family to come along and make a donation. Many people see Tea-cember as an
opportunity to host a Chanukah party at their shul or children’s school. The main objective is to raise awareness of Chana and of course funds to help Chana continue to develop its vital services. Teacember is fun and easy, and a good excuse for a get together! Do you have any educational events in the pipeline where I can learn more? Chana offers educational programmes across London and the UK. On the 9th December, Chana in partnership with Borehamwood United Synagogue Ladies Committee will host an evening on ‘Is it my hormones or is it me?’ The presentation will be made by Dr Gidon Lieberman, Consultant Gynaecologist at the Whittington Hospital, in the evening, at Yavneh College.
