POLITICS MATTERS Happy New Year or a Good New Year? Mike FREER As we enter Rosh Hashana it is customary for me to wish my Jewish constituents ‘Shanah Tovah’ which I loosely translated as have a Happy New Year, rather like the greeting I use on 1st January. Of course in January the greeting is often accompanied by a hope that people will find happiness, success, wealth, good health etc. In January, the emphasis is often on having a successful new year, by which we usually mean getting that promotion, the bigger house, the pay rise or simply the becoming better off materially. How often have we sought that better computer, the latest gadget only to find it doesn’t bring us the satisfaction we craved and so we crave an even bigger, better, more up to date gadget; and so we continue the often fruitless pursuit of happiness. That does bring into sharp focus what we mean by happiness. Kathleen Vohs, an authors of a new study to be published this year in The Journal of Positive Psychology: “Happy people get joy from receiving benefits from others while people leading meaningful lives get a lot of joy from giving to others.” Giving to others can bring happiness and fulfilment, rather than simply focussing on how we can make our own lives better. The irony is as we do good, we often find contentment and that elusive happiness.

So as a new year starts, renew relationships. Those closest to us provide emotional support especially when we are feeling glum. Take the time perhaps to rebuild a friendship that has become strained or distant. Let go of that grudge, life is too short, cherish those close to us either in family or in friendships. Get physical - if you are going to visit a friend nearby, walk. Going to the supermarket for a few items, walk. Not only is it good as we do good, we often find contentment and that elusive happiness. for your health but not having to worry about driving allows you to reflect and clear your mind. It’s important to find time for yourself. Do good. I don’t think it is a co-incidence that Mitzvah Day closely follows Rosh Hashana. It can be a simple act of kindness, like calling in on an elderly friend or collecting an item from the shops for a housebound neighbour. Volunteer your time to one of the many excellent local charities. Above all - be thankful, if only for simply having had an uneventful

year! For the hundreds of thousands of people who have been displaced from Syria and North Africa an uneventful year is all many dream of. We really should count our blessings but also reflect on what we and the country can do for those seeking refuge. Our area of North London was largely built on immigration. Many local families settled in the UK after fleeing war or persecution. No one can argue that the influx of new arrivals fleeing the horrors of the Second World War haven’t gone on to become a vibrant, successful part of British Society. Refugees have a proud history of success and contribution to British Society. T
here’s a famous quote by food writer Michael Pollen, “Eat food. Less of it. More plants.” As we move into Autumn I believe this is sound advice to live by.
Eat food. Sounds obvious,
right. Well the next time you eat something, have a look at what it is, what it’s made from, what’s in it? If it’s from a packet, read the ingredients, if there’s anything in the list you don’t recognise, then it’s probably not food! There are about 4000 different additives which are permitted to be added to our food. ‘Everyday’ additives like aspartame, found in diet drinks, sodium nitrates, found in processed meats, and MSG, in crisps flavouring are often consumed daily. These additives are regulated, andv classed ‘safe’ for human consumption. As a Nutritional Therapist, my clients come to me with an array of health conditions, and often just the act of removing all these additives from their diet can make an enormous difference. Studies have show sweeteners can be harmful for people with diabetes. Nitrates and MSG can cause allergies, and certain food dyes have implications on children’s behaviour. My advice is, if your grandma wouldn’t recognise
what’s on the label, it has no business being in your body!
Less of it. This can be a
tricky one! For many religions, September is a season full of Yomim Tovim, and Yom Tov generally means food! I believe it is really important to celebrate, enjoy and have fun. However in the UK we have a major problem with our expanding waist lines. According to the 2014 Public Health England survey over 55% of Barnet residents are overweight or obese. This weight gain has major implications for our health diabetes, stroke, heart disease, certain cancers are all risk factors. Reducing our food intake will dramatically help. It can be difficult to eat less,
however there are some simple tips to try. Ensure you leave at least 3 hours between eating to stop grazing. Chew your food slowly, and put down your cutlery after each mouthful, to allow your tummy to recognise it’s full.
More plants. The end of
summer is the time of year to embrace vegetables. These really need to be the main constituent of your diet, high in fibre, vitamins and minerals, and able to lower our disease risk. There are about 125,000 edible plants in the world. The Western diet favours just 14! Engage him in conversation, while sitting on one of the stone benches under a green, leafy tree in one of the most beautiful moshavim in the Western Galil, and you’ll be able to hear, possibly for the first time in your life, what it’s like to keep Shmitah from a person who should know. After all Yitzchak Biton hasn’t only kept Shmitah once or twice. Not even three or four times. No, this holy man is now finishing up his seventh Shmitah year. Yes, seven. In his lifetime, he’s prepared his fields seven times for the upcoming Shmitah year, hung out seven ‘hefker’ sign, gone through seven years’ worth of putting his trust only in Hashem, as he watched his beloved land go to waste. Seven Shmitah cycles – a full Yovel’s worth. In Elul of 5774, a delegation from Keren HaShviis came out to visit Biton’s fields. He took them through his pomegranate grove, the grove that had already rested for six Shmittah cycles and was about to rest for its seventh. The delegation was struck by the ripe, luscious, ruby red fruit, looking as if it knew what kedushah awaited it.

“It’s not worth it for him to start up with me” Yitzchak picked a few pomegranates and presented them to us. The fruit made its way to Bnei Brak, where we brought it to Maran HaRav Chaim Kanievsky shlita. He was moved to see the special fruit, and when he heard that its grower was about to keep his seventh Shmitah, he declared that such rimonim were worthy to sit on the tables of Klal Yisrael on Rosh Hashana, and have the tefillah said over them that our merits should be as plentiful as the seeds of a rimon. Upon hearing this, Keren Hashviis decided to purchase pomegranates from Moshav Chazon, and distribute them to our supporters in time for Rosh HaShanah. Perhaps you yourself had one on your Yom Tov table. If so, you’ll certainly be interested in hearing the continuation of Biton’s story. A few months have passed, and now it’s the middle of Kislev. A huge storm has broken out;

wind and hail are ripping through the skies, covering the land from the north to the south. Moshav Chazon is hit as well by this powerful storm. The hail in particular is strong, battering rooftops and trees for hours. People stayed indoors, farm animals stayed locked up in their pens. Finally, after many hours, the storm at last subsided. With the sun peeking out onto an ice-strewn ground, Yitzchak Biton went outside to check the status of his pomegranates. Stepping over ice crystals and rivulets of water, he reached his orchards, opened the gates and looked around. His concern was warranted, as his pomegranate supply, which was still from the sixth

STORY FEATURE year and did not have kedushas sheviis attached to is, was huge, and, even after Keren Hashviis’ purchase, he still had a lot of fruit left, fruit which he was counting on to provide him with income to help get him through the year. And now he stood inside his orchard and surveyed the damage that the storm had wrought. It was absolute. Where yesterday had been a grove full of juicy ripe fruit, his entire crop was now on the floor, crushed and water-drenched. Everything was ruined, the income he had counted on – gone. The storm had done its damage – but the storm that was now raging inside him was, in his mind, even worse. Seven Shemittos you have under your belt, he told himself, and you’re still having trouble with emunah?? You still look at this ruined crop and lose heart? No! He had worked long and hard, seven long years, to achieve his level of emunah, and he was not going to let the yetzer hara get away with this one. As he put it to the Keren Hashviis representative that he called immediately after returning from his fields: “The yetzer hara will learn: It’s not worth it to start up with me.” “Listen,” he explains, in a voice heavy with emotion. “I know this yetzer hara well – already seven years he’s been with me. And each Shmitah he tries anew to come find me and bring me down in my emunah. But I’ve learned how to deal with him. I immediately fortify
myself against him by doing something to strengthen myself even further in emunah, to show Hashem that I’m keeping Shmitah with all my heart, no matter what happens. And the yetzer hare quickly learns not to start with me.” The Keren Hashviis representative is very moved by this speech, but Biton hasn’t finished. “Look,” he says. “This time as well, I’m going to prove to the Satan that Yitzchak Biton doesn’t break from storms and hail, and not from a thousand ruined pomegranates. I want to do something right now, to prove to the yetzer hara that my emunah is as strong as ever. But I’m asking you to help me.” Biton explains that he has a son-in-law who is also a farmer up north, but all of Biton’s pleas that his son-in-law keep Shmitah have fallen on deaf ears. “He’s relying on Heter Mechira, and isn’t ready to put himself at risk like me. He said to me today, after this happened ”Abba, you see, it’s not worth it, it’s just not working.” Biton pauses to swallow his tears. “I can’t bear to think that the father of my grandchildren isn’t keeping Shmitah. Please, help me convince him, and this will already be my victory in emunah against the yetzer hara.”
With such a plea, how could we refuse? A Keren Hashviis delegation, together with Biton, arrived at the home of the son-in-law. R’ Ira Zimmerman, head of the northern yishuvim department of Keren Hashviis and a vineyard owner himself, began to speak to the son-in-law, speaking from the heart and, together with Yitzchak Biton, telling him about the pure levels of emunah that he will zocheh to achieve, the depths of strength he can tap into, the levels of heroism he can aspire to, by keeping Shmitah. And, as they speak, something inside the son-in-law opens up. He sees how his father-in-law has taken a personal disaster and used it to climb to still higher heights of emunah. He decided that he, too, wants to aspire to such greatness, and decides then and there to start keeping Shmitah. They walk out of the house. The sky, which just that morning had been black and stormy, is now alight in the evening glow. This is just a small peek into the lives of the Shomrei Sheviis. British Friends of ZAKA Director,
ZAKA is an Israeli, UN-recognised humanitarian rescue and recovery organisation, with 1,650 highly-trained volunteers on call 24/7, 365 days a year. Our volunteers work with the emergency services providing first response, specialist search and rescue services and honouring the dead. We are the only organisation in Israel doing this sacred work or chesed shel emet. That is, whenever there is an unnatural death, be it a traffic accident, terror attack or natural disaster, our volunteers in their signature yellow vests are there, carefully combing the scene to collect all human remains as required by Jewish law.

Sadly, every year is busier than the last one. ZAKA clocked up over 1.5 million volunteering hours, attending thousands of incidents across the country. These range from car accidents and building collapses, to search and rescue missions with jeeps, rappelling, diving and canine units. ZAKA is recognised by the Israeli Defense Ministry as an emergency aid organisation, an integral part of the home front command in times of emergency. So, after the intense activity last summer during Operation Protective Edge, we honed our civil defense skills in April with a nationwide emergency drill simulating an earthquake disaster.

And was ZAKA busy overseas as well?
This last year was one of the most intense for the volunteers in the ZAKA International Rescue Unit. Not only were ZAKA volunteers from Israel and France involved in the aftermath of the two Paris terror attacks, but we also sent a team to train European rabbis in self-defense and emergency aid. This reflects our holistic approach at ZAKA pro-active prevention and education, as well as dealing with the tragic consequences of
terror, natural disasters and accidents. The ZAKA International Rescue Unit was also involved in two very different, but equally challenging incidents - the Germanwings plane crash in the French Alps and the Nepal earthquake. The same volunteers who were combing the mountainside in freezing conditions in March spent many days the following month in Nepal. Often, they were the first people to reach remote villages in dire need of medical assistance. Their mission was successful, locating and recovering the body of missing Israeli backpacker Or Asraf and helping the Nepalese people in their hour of need.

Tell us about British Friends of ZAKA? We work to lighten the financial burden for the volunteer organisation in Israel, by raising money to buy much-needed equipment. ZAKA is totally dependent on the generosity of donors. Thanks to some exciting initiatives, we are slowly reaching out to younger and more engaged supporters and we invite your readers to get involved as well.
Give me examples of what BFoZ has been doing this year. On the safety prevention side, we found over 400 appliances unfit for use in our pre-Pesach hotplate safety check. We also try to put the fun into fundraising, with ideas such as a whisky tasting evening and a poker evening initiatives of Young ZAKA which raised enough money to buy urgently-needed emergency supplies. We have been in schools, joining forces with
