The experience of a couple facing the challenge of infertility can only truly be comprehended by those who have been through it. For such a couple, the road to what many people take for granted is often paved with years of uncertainty, severe disappointment, and a gaping void. Keren Ohr was established by those who get it. Reb Shmuli Falk and his wife, having been through this Nisayon themselves, formed Keren Ohr - a ray of light for a couple who is overwhelmed by the darkness of pain, of disappointment and of stigma that inevitably accompanies infertility. We are all aware of the admirable work of organisations helping couples struggling with infertility. What is the need for Keren Ohr? Whilst Klal Yisroel is blessed with various respected organisations that have risen to the challenge of assisting couples in solving infertility, we felt that there were other crucial needs that were not being met. There is a desperate need to offer and provide non-medical support, to create a space for healing and recovery for couples going through this Nisayon. There are those who can guide a couple through the important medical decisions, yet where does a couple turn when all those carefully-made plans fall apart. Why is this such a crucial necessity? We are all unfortunately familiar with the reality of infertility, whether on a personal or global level. But most of what we envision is the actual treatment, not what comes along with it or what is required for the journey. The exhausting routines of fertility treatment not only require physical stamina, they also have a marked effect on a couple’s emotional wellbeing. Couples need to recharge and reconnect between treatments. It’s practically impossible to keep going, full of hope and positivity, when all a couple has seen so far is disappointment. Between treatments, it is vital for them
to recharge their batteries so they can tackle the obstacles ahead together and with the required energy. What can be done so a couple can ‘get back on their feet’? A short respite break - a mini getaway can give the couple that desperately needed ‘recharge and reconnect’. Such a getaway not only gives the husband and wife the strength to continue, it can save a marriage that is severely challenged from so early on. From our own experiences and the incredibly positive feedback we have received, we have seen how transformative these few days can be. Why can a couple not simply rent a small apartment and holiday? Renting a small holiday apartment (Tzimmer) in Eretz Yisroel is not an ideal setting for financial and logistical reasons. A small rental unit can cost upwards of 100 pounds a night. Treatment costs can empty a typical couple’s bank account quite quickly and they need to allocate all funds for that purpose. The typical Israeli Tzimmer is not built with religious needs in mind and oftentimes couples cannot use them when they need it most. So what does Keren Ohr do to fill this lack? Keren Ohr provides a beautiful purpose built Tzimmer, to give these couples the

break they need, without having to worry about the prohibitive cost. With hotel standard amenities, a stunning garden, jacuzzi, a picturesque countryside view, and absolute attention to every detail, it is obvious to every couple who steps foot into this oasis that there is someone who understands their pain. Endless thought and care was invested in the design to enable an atmosphere of maximum relaxation and rejuvenation. How did Keren Ohr develop? It has been a story of remarkable Siyata Dishmaya from the beginning. An opportunity landed on our doorstep early on, when our friends Mr and Mrs Palmer informed them that they were building a new home on a Moshav near Ramat Beit Shemesh. Having endured the trial of infertility themselves, the Palmers were keen to see this project through and graciously offered the entire ground floor of their new home, along with a sizable piece of enclosed private garden property, for this purpose. After much planning, the beautiful Tzimmer built on this property opened in Elul 5779. How often is this Tzimmer used? The demand for the Tzimmer is beyond belief. We receive approximately 30 calls every week from couples desperately needing the break the Tzimmer provides. Not a single Shabbos has gone by with it not being
used, and most weeknights are booked as well. Keren Ohr’s high demand is evidenced by the fact that its clientele comes entirely from word of mouth; it has never needed to advertise its services. How many people have stayed at the Tzimmer? Since it’s opening in Elul 5779, over 100 hundred couples have benefited from the Tzimmer; a number even more remarkable when one considers that Eretz Yisroel spent several months in lockdown due to Covid-19. These one hundred plus couples were from the entire spectrum of Shomrei Torah in Eretz Yisroel - Chassidish, Yeshivish, Modern Orthodox and everyone in between. Are all these couples Israeli? Not at all! Though many are, the majority are either English or American. Some live in Eretz Yisroel, far from familial support, and many others have travelled to Israel in order to benefit
from the advanced medical expertise offered by a country that prides itself in its high birth rate. They come with elevated hopes, often after months of planning, but those hopes are not always realised. The Tzimmer is the perfect place for them to rest and recover before returning home to plan their next treatment step.

Presently, this incredibly important institution is running at a loss and are therefore running a campaign to ensure we are able to continue giving these couples what they so desperately need.
Can anyone else benefit from Keren Ohr’s Tzimmer?
What are your plans for the future?
Yes. The Tzimmer eventually began to serve other couples, who had undergone a different heartbreak – the loss of a full-term baby. Despite enduring the immense difficulties of childbirth, a regular ‘Mother and Baby’ home is not an option. At times, the bereaved mother simply cannot face returning home, whether to her home blessed with kids or to her empty nest prepared for a first arrival. Instead, the couple travels straight to the Tzimmer. How is it funded? The couples are charged a nominal fee
Further branches are needed not only in Eretz Yisroel, but in the UK, too. We have already supported the establishment of two similar venues in the USA. The model works and we are only too happy to see it replicated worldwide. Expanding the services to provide more support to these couples is in our vision as well. Such ideas include providing meals to couples staying at the Tzimmer, especially those coming directly from hospital, as well as for those couples who are unable to travel to ‘bring the Tzimmer to them’ by sending them care packages and meals delivered to their door.
Keren Ohr was strongly supported by two of England’s leading and sorely missed Poskim -Harav Pesach Eliyahu Falk zt”l and Harav Osher Yaakov Westheim zt”l. They, among other Rabbonim, expressed how crucial this project is, from their experience in guiding couples facing this challenge. But Keren Ohr needs your help in continuing their incredible work. Sunday and Monday prior to Rosh Hashanah, Klal Yisroel begin Selichos and enter the final full week before Rosh Hashonoh, preparing to embark on a journey of “B’Ohr Panecha Yehaleichun” - to walk in the light of Hashem. On these auspicious days we will answer the call of the hour by trying to smooth the difficult journey of others and enable this vital endeavour to not only be a sustainable "ray of light", but to thrive and expand, both in Eretz Yisroel and closer to home, too.
