Welcome To Northwest Connection “To Bring Pacific Northwest Martial Artists Together As One Family, Regardless Of Style, Method Or Origin” The premier, and only, networking avenue of it's kind. Through "Northwest Connection", Martial Artists of all styles and methods can share, learn, and connect with one another. The mission of "Northwest Connection" is to build a strong network of Martial Artists all over the Pacific Northwest. There are many great Martial Artists throughout Oregon and Washington, with so much to share. It is about time that we start connecting with one another. The articles contained within are primarily the work of Northwest Martial Artists, sharing their ideas, experience, theories and methods. You will also find within, a listing of Martial Arts schools and related businesses that Martial Artists will find useful. Also, there is space to advertise upcoming Martial Arts related events, such as seminars, workshops, and gatherings. If you would like to be placed on a distribution list for upcoming editions, would like to list your school/business, would like to place an ad within or just have other questions, please contact us. Northwest Connection has been started as an open outlet for Martial Artists to share their views, express their ideas and grow as individuals and as a whole collective unit. It is the goal that we can all come together and share with an open mind, seeing the value in each person‘s contribution. It is understood that not everyone will agree or have the same views, but that is the whole premise and point of this publication – to have a place that we can express and share regardless of our style, training methods, personal views, etc. It is believed that we all have something to give and the fact is that we all have plenty to learn. In order to foster this positive learning, it is imperative that we maintain an open mind and give each other the opportunity to voice our views. It is also to be understood, however, that there are certain guidelines to this open sharing. There will not be any racist remarks allowed, no vulgar language, no slander of any person (group of persons or organization), no attacks of any kind on anyone, or any such expressions. All articles submitted will be reviewed prior to publication and are subject to editing and/or rejection. It is also to be understood that Northwest Connection does NOT endorse any articles/views contained, but is merely a sounding board for this process of growth. We ask that everyone comes with an open mind and can see the whole picture of this endeavor. The mission of uniting and networking is a very admirable one, and it is hoped that it can be seen for what it is. Please do not judge the endeavor by small pieces that may be contained, but rather by the mission.

“NW Kajukenbo Family” Seminar IV, 2010 If you missed this one, you will really want to be there next year!! Bigger and better every year and this was an AWESOME year!!
Wow, what a day!! This was a very momentous event, with representation from many styles and methods. So many people came together to share in this gathering of ―family‖. There were more than 90 people to come through the doors throughout the day. In that mix were SIX GrandMasters (GM Gerry Scott, GM Al Dacascos, GM Gabriel Vargas, GM Doug Bailey, GM Jerry Weldon, & GM Bob Heuer). There were also MANY Professors and other high ranks from Kajukenbo, Arnis, Eskabo, Kenpo and more. The day started off with Professor Tim Gagnier and Sifu Wade Yamauchi leading the warm-ups. The first instructors were Sifu Sharon Britian teaching Tai Chi and Sifu Wade Yamauchi teaching Kajukenbo/ Muay Thai. Sifu Trent Junker taught ―Attacking The Attacker‖ while Professor Fred King taught material from his System, Mo Duk Pai. Sifu Becky Gagnier pressured everyone to make their techniques work against an attacker in a REDMAN suit, which allowed participants to use full force techniques. This really put everyone‘s techniques to a good test and showed them where their strengths and weaknesses were. Sifu Kevin Jackson followed with some good Ground ―Fighting‖, not submission grappling, but rather how to utilize ground skills in a street confrontation. Professor Mike Whittle taught a great blend of Kajukenbo and Lua—both Arts originating from Hawaii. He taught the use of a strangulation cord

Looking around the house you will find a broom, mop, rake, shovel, a tall lamp or even a stick laying around. These are all great weapons that are similar to a bo. A pen or pencil can be used as a kubotan. In bo tai bo, an exercise of bo against bo, there are several trapping techniques that use tuite hidden within the moves.

Using Tuite with a kubotan
The Kubotan is a weapon that can be carried with you and also act as a keychain. It is a small weapon and can very easily be concealed and be a very effective extension of your hand. Carried in your hand you can see just how effective it is when someone grabs you.

Using Tuite with a tonfa
A weapon used by law enforcement officers, the PR-24, is a similar type of weapon used by martial artists called a tonfa. This demonstrates one way it can be used to control a suspect.

A Time For Heroes: Many Are Called But Few Are Chosen A Time For Heroes: Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen. By Sensei Gregory C. Lewis. karatemeansemptyhand.com
So, what is to be done? There is much to be done, but let‘s first narrow our focus (while, at the same time, widening our gaze) towards how we in our capacity
as experts in our field can do our part to create viable alternatives to defenselessness, helplessness, and hopelessness.
Kids are aware that we adults can be oblivious to the social politics going on with them all around us. As self-defense instructors, we often teach our students about ‗situational awareness‘; about being tuned in to what is going on around ones immediate proximity, so as to [ideally] avoid a specific danger or set of dangers. Here is a less stressful, but no less important opportunity to practice this skill…on a daily basis. Indeed, I would consider this a form of ‗intelligence gathering‘.
One thing I did was join The Sensei Project. This effort is being led by Tom Callos, a seasoned vet of our industry. You can look at the website here: www.tomcallos.com/ Scroll down to visit The Sensei Project link. The other thing I‘m doing is making a greater effort to take note of bullying behaviors at the schools and community centers I teach in.
Done correctly, like any mission to win the ―hearts and minds‖ of a skeptical group, an instructor can potentially see increased loyalty and dedication from current students and a significant influx of new students, by virtue of paying attention and acting on the subtle details of what one observes around them in their area of influence.
I told an elementary school age student of mine that “having martial arts skills is the closest thing to having super powers… in real life.” I then went on to quote from the first ―Spider-Man‖ movie: “With great power comes great responsibility.” I could tell he really got the larger point by how he first smiled knowingly, but then went into deep contemplation about it as we continued our cool down/end of class stretching. I believe we are currently living in a time where the misuse and abuse of power is considered a ‗positive‘ quality in the larger society; from politics, to professional sports, and sometimes within our own organizations. We can see the influence of this particular interpretation of power in the behavior and values of many young people. One example that has made a tragic return to national headlines is that of bullying; to the point where some would rather commit suicide than endure another school day of terror, alienation, humiliation, and/or physical assault by their classmates.
