First impressions are difficult to maneuver— we can either make them, or break them. They say they are made within the first 7 seconds of meeting someone, and those few moments can determine how a person will feel about the other. Despite that frightening statistic, today I will introduce myself and what I have to offer to this wonderful organization called Key Club. Wait for it. Here comes the cliché introduction. Hello, my name is Jazmyn Mustafa, and I will be Key Club’s Bulletin Editor from Northwest Career and Technical Academy. Each month I will present to you a fabulous newsletter containing all of the events for the month, along with pictures and articles from our amazing members at NWCTA. On another note, I am proud of the previous editor, Gabrielle Copeland, and all that she did for Key Club. She trained me excellently and I know that with her help, my newsletters will be sharp! Thanks again to a retired board member, key clubber, a friend, Gabby. Has it been a positive 7 seconds yet? I hope so. BEE well, do good deeds, and I will keep in touch, Jazmyn Mustafa

President Hey hawks! Its your new president for the 2014-2015 key club year! I'm so excited and ready to serve YOU all , the members. because with out YOU there is NO key club, without YOU there is no service being done and without YOU millions of lives aren't being changed. So I hope this school year , as a board we can really show you all that YOU matter. I'm planning on many service projects, socials, awards etc. This year is going to be a great one, don't miss out! With that being said , what can you look forward to this year? A board that's going to be as close as they can be, with great communication among themselves and all of you. We have goals to set as a club and I can't wait to hear all your ideas and goals for our Key Club. Not only do I want our club to grow and expand but I want our club to have DEDICATED members. To me the number does not matter , I would rather have 100 dedicated members than 300 undedicated members. Because Key Club is not just for the fun, but the service and what we do for people. We make the change, we are the change. I hope that many of you invite your friends to our meeting Monday and tell them how much fun its going to be. I can't wait to see all your shining faces at our meeting and to conduct my first meeting I'm so excited! I hope I can serve you all well this year! Thank you(: Flying with service, Krysta Phoumiphat

Bubble Run

The Bubble Run had a great turn out! Many Key Clubbers attended this bubbly event and got their clothes soaked with service...and soap!

Bubble-teers serving water for the runners!

Water Balloon Social “For the month of April, our Key Club had a series of events to community events. Such events consisted of our Water Balloon Social in which several members attended and brought snacks, sports materials, and water balloons of course! Our Water Balloon Social was one of the most popular and active socials has had this year. The social was held at a nearby park which provided easy access to transportation. By the end of the event, you were either soaked or had been hit with a couple water balloons throughout the day. It was a wonderful day of fun in the sun where everyone could just visit with friends and relax.” — Jared Lewis, Grade 9

The water balloon social was a huge success! I didn’t expect many people to show up, but everyone had fun. Me and several people went to my house to fill up water balloons while everyone else stayed at the park and socialized. By the time we got back to the park everyone had their partners for the water balloon toss game. Everyone participated and it started all the excitement of the event. After the game, there was a giant water balloon fight. We all took the time to clean up our mess and the rest of the time we all socialized with each other. Some people were singing, dancing, and even skating. Overall, the event was a great turnout and I’m excited to see more events like this for this club. — Austin Madriaga, Grade 12

Blacklight 5k “Another spectacular event that many had attended was the Blacklight Run. We had a huge turn out of members both participating and volunteering at the event to help raise money and awareness for charities such as Make a Wish Foundation, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Miracle Network. At the Blacklight Run, various stations were assigned to each of our volunteers. Various tasks and responsibilities were provided to each of our Key Club members. From checking in participants and selling Blacklight merchandise to blasting runners with glowin-the-dark powder during the race, the event was truly a rush and a great experience for everyone. We would like to give a big thank you out to our Sergeant at Arms, James Valdez, our Senior Representative, Jonathan Brown, and our future Junior Representative, Karen Nguyen for carefully planning out these events and helping our Key Club help our community.” — Jared Lewis, Grade 9

“Going to the Blacklight Run was one of the best events I’ve been to so far. The experience of having glowing powder everywhere, loud music, an families enjoying themselves was truly unique. Chairing this event was actually fun because of the responsibilities and it helps me grow as a leader inch by inch.”— Karen Jensen, Grade 10

Las Vegas Rescue Mission Volunteer Day “Volunteering at Las Vegas Rescue Mission was a wonderful experience. Unlike other events I have attended, we did not only cheer people on and pass water out, but we got to do a lot more. While volunteering, I was able to see the thankfulness of the people because they actually saw us working hard to help them and we took the time out of our day just to provide food for them. It was a great feeling to help out the community and work hard. We all worked hard getting all the food together in a rush, and I would definitely do this again!” — Jazmine Marquez, Grade 11

“At the rescue mission we formed an assembly line to pump out trays of food for the homeless. After the food was finished, we cleaned up the entire dining hall and prepared for round two. I really liked this because it was really fun and it was very warm and welcoming environment, despite the neighborhood.” Victoriosio Delacruz, Grade 9

“At Las Vegas Rescue Mission we handed out trays of food to those that were less fortunate than us and the people that lived in the area near Las Vegas Rescue Mission. It was a really fun experience and it really opened my eyes to what was going on in our community. I am now more than ever grateful for what I have and will do whatever I can to help people in my community and in others as well. I will continue to volunteer at Las Vegas Rescue Mission.” — Melanie Garcia, Grade 10

Las Vegas Rescue Mission “Nothing can make a Key Clubber happier than seeing smile on the faces of those whom they have helped. Last Friday was a chance when I was able to experience that first-handedly, when 4 other friends joined me to volunteer at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. We put on our gloves and hairnets, stood at our stations and quickly passed out trays of food in an assembly line until completion. During the time that we were there, we handed out dinner to those in need, which was vey heart-warming. Once we finished serving dinner, we all had a mop or towel in hand, and we scrubbed the dining hall from top to bottom. This event was much more personal than any other service project I ever attended— it wasn’t the typical cheering and standing around, it was actual work. It forced me to realize what I had and to be thankful for all of it, and I am so glad I was able to enjoy this volunteer experience.” — Jazmyn Mustafa, Grade 9

Sometimes people take volunteering for granted. Fundraising and time play an essential aspect in supporting all kinds of good causes, but volunteers can relate to the guilt that they feel when they realize that they have focused too much on the concept of getting money and getting hours. They don't know what it truly means to volunteer until they volunteer at situations, such as the Las Vegas Rescue Mission which assists those in need for food, shelter, and care. After putting on aprons, gloves, and hairnets, we Key Clubbers were responsible for serving over one hundred individuals. We were taught how much we were supposed to place onto each tray. We served sandwiches, salads, rice, and ice cream. With so many people coming in, we had to work efficiently alongside the adults who also made this service possible. As we served each individual, these hungry people thanked us. We continued to help out by refilling water pitchers, wiping down tables, put chairs up, mopping the floor, restocking bread and cleaning the stainless steal surfaces of the kitchen. The five of us, who were strangers to these individuals, provided not only food, but our own time and care to help out. Knowing that, it is certainly the best feeling as a Key Clubber can experience as a volunteer.” — Rhealyn Boquiren, Grade 10
