Letter from the

President

November was a great month for our club. With recruitment, fundraising, and planning mostly. December is gonna be as big as October with Magical Forest and toy drives! Get ready hawks because were kicking it up a notch! A lot of things were changed around this month for the better. More clubber's are interested in running for office, going to division meetings and events, and getting involved. I'm so proud and lucky to be surrounded by such amazing people. Our member of the month is Jane Ha for all the driving, spirit gear, and sacrifices she made for key club last month. But truly all of our members should be member of the month.

Love always, Sam Boyer

Letter from the Happy November everyone! What a beautiful month this was. Because this month is about giving thanks, I want to thank all of you! Everyone continues to send in articles and visuals, and it just makes me really excited that you want to share your experiences! Hopefully I portrayed all of your voices accurately in this month’s newsletter, and I hope you take the time to read everyone else’s experiences. I hope all of you continue to send in items for the couple months to come, and I can’t wait to see what you’ll do in December! Turn the page to recap the wonderful month of November! Until next month Hawks!

Editor Love always, Rea Sayas

Walk to End Alzheimer's ISAAC RAMOS—JUNIOR MEMBER The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will always be one of my favorite events! It’s something I look forward to every year. Sure, getting up at 5 A.M. in the morning just to be at Fashion Show by six may sound exhausting (especially on a weekend!), but the cause that you’re doing it for truly makes up for it. Volunteering at this event taught me a lot about how the little things you do, like cheering for a group of walkers, or giving a high-five to a cute, little kid, can truly make their experience just as memorable as they make yours. Seeing all different types of people gather together with smiles on their faces to support one cause also gave me an everlasting perspective of how much this walk really means to people and their families. With this thought in mind, I’m proud to have been part of this event and I hope to see all of your pretty faces next year so that you too can experience what it’s like to volunteer for such an unforgettable cause.

SHAILA SALINAS—EVENT CHAIR “Our first big volunteer event, Walk to End Alzheimer's, was amazing this year. Although I wasn't able to talk about it during the Key Club meetings, there were a lot more people who volunteered than I thought there would be. This was my first event I chaired for, and it won't be my last. The way our club and other Key Clubbers encouraged those who were walking to support the cause was an uplifting experience. The smiles on the walkers faces gives me more reasons to continue volunteering for other events and to help others. I had a great time during this event, I hope everyone else did too. Special thanks to Karen for encouraging me to chair this event and for not giving up on me. I hope our Key Club appreciates you as much as I do! I love you so much!”

JOHN VO—EVENT COCHAIR “The breast cancer walk is a super energetic walk with a significant impact on our community! It's always nice to see our club involved which issues so dear to the heart of many members and even though we didn't make our goal we still raised money and every dollar counts! I'm so glad our club got to do the breast cancer walk!”

AEJAE NAVAL—SAA “Even though there were only about 10 of us, we, as a club, had a great time participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk! Our club was able to bond and have an amazing time. In addition, we were able to raise and donate money to support the cause! I hope that next year, we have a lot more participants so we can all join in on the fun!”

Thank you Sara Daniel for chairing this event!

JARED LEWIS—SOPHOMORE MEMBER “At the Light the Night Walk, several families and volunteers gathered to celebrate and help find a cure for cancer. From patients to survivors, smiles were seen all around as the sun set and the lights were lit. From Zumba, inspiring speeches, Hula-hoop contests, and live music, the event was put together beautifully. Everything from the people to the array of food booths available added to the experience. Volunteers helped register families, sell merchandise, guide people along the walk, and helped clean up after the event was over. Near the Container Park and Fremont Street, the venue was in a pleasant area and truly added to the “Light the Night” experience. In just this one event, several thousands of dollars were contributed finding the cure to cancer. I hope that more keyclubbers can attend this event next year as it truly is a wonderful event!”

DĂa de Los Muertos D DEA BUENAFLOR—JUNIOR MEMBER “I had such a fun time volunteering for this event! Since the Springs Preserve is known for their family oriented events, seeing all the different cultural aspects and the way Hispanics observed this holiday with their friends and families was such a nice experience. I got to observe a bunch of different altars where people commemorated their loved ones who have passed away, the unique artwork expressed on canvas or face paint, and the aroma of the food which filled every corner I turned. On the first night, I helped out with the maze where I monitored all the decorations to make sure they were still in tact. While doing so, I got to greet people who came through it. On the second night, I helped set up an altar surrounded by lights which looked really pretty once it got dark outside. The best part of the job was mainly the interaction between the community and myself. Seeing all the kids and families bonding together, talking to the people who walked through, and seeing the community become one. That's one of the many reasons why I love volunteering at the Springs Preserve.

Thank you Karen Jensen for chairing this event!

Division 28 West Social NOELLE MASANGKAY—JUNIOR MEMBER “The D28W Social was a great chance to bond with other members of our division. Most, if not all, D28W schools were present and seeing all these people made me happy. To fundraise, we all got the chance to pie our LTG, Sheldon Wong, for a dollar donation. Two members from our club pied him and it was very entertaining. Also, there were several icebreakers that we participated in. The first one was “True or False?” Sheldon asked us questions and we had to decide whether it was true or false. The questions were varied from random facts to Key Club trivia, and I feel that I learned a lot. We also played Capture the Flag, where we were separated into two huge groups. This was where I bonded with members from other schools, as we all got excited. It was also interesting because we played this game while it was dark. This was a fun social and I can’t wait to go to the next one!”

ALYSSA VUONG—FRESHMAN REP “The D2W social was very fun! It was great to see everyone from our division come together as one big family. Getting to know everyone and all the activities were the best part. We all played capture the flag, and that was a fun way to meet other key clubbers and work together as a team. Everyone was really nice, and we all bonded so easily. I really had a blast at our division social and hope to attend many more!”

ANGIE PARAYNO—FRESHMAN MEMBER “The D2W social was very fun!

Relay for Life Kickoff JARED LEWIS—SOPHOMORE MEMBER “One of my favorite events this year and for the month of November was the Relay for Life Kickoff! In which, several clubs from across our county gathered to raise funds and sign up for the event. Each club had sold various snacks and some even provided games for entertainment. As everyone settled down in their booths and tables, we eventually gathered in the center of the room to hear a heart-touching story of how Spring Valley’s Relay for Life came to be after a student had unfortunately passed from his reoccurring cancer. To help support his vision of the future and the future of other cancer patients, I highly suggest that more people will join this cause. As the night progressed, everyone played games, met new people, laughed a lot, and made new memories. As a fellow key-clubber, I hope to see all of you at Relay and next year’s kickoff!”

DEVIN LEES—JUNIOR MEMBER “With Relay for Life right at the turn of the season, clubs are kicking off preparations for the event. On Friday November 14th 2014, representatives from clubs participating in the event gathered at Spring Valley High school to raise funds for their clubs and donations. The event was a wonderful experience, meeting and interacting with clubs within region five and supporting a similar charity. Throughout the evening individuals also had opportunities to prepare bags for those with cancer or an individual who has fallen from cancer, with donations to support cancer research and patient relief. Overall it was a wonderful event, in which club members from clubs throughout the region joined together to kick off Relay for Life 2014, raising the proper funds and spirit to do so.”

DAYS LEFT until RELAY FOR LIFE 2015 May 1-2, 2015 at Spring Valley High School

Fall Rally South JETT ANGELES—TREASURER Fall Rally South is by far the best of the best of Key Club events. It brings all the clubs of the biggest district in the world in one place where we can all enjoy each other's company due to the simple fact that we all love to serve. It's a chance to auction off our LTG's, and have some fun after! You get to meet people from all over who share your fiery passion to change the world, one community at a time. This year was my second Fall Rally, but it was very dear to me because I shared it with my ultimate duo partner whose Fall Rally this year will be his last. Normally, many people go from a club together on their own bus, but this year, it was just me and him, making this Fall Rally very special. It was also cool because since it was just him and I, we were able to represent our entire club by ourselves and met the other clubs of our division in basically a one-to-one meeting, making our ties with them more personal. Plus, Six Flags is definitely a "key" place to enjoy yourself with others because of the thrilling rides, which I had a blast on! My Fall Rally South 2014 experience was definitely a 13/10 and the memories made will be irreplaceable. I'm happy I was able to have such a splendid time and I anxiously await Fall Rally South 2015!
