QUICK GUIDE TO THE COTSWOLDS Beautiful countryside, chic accommodation, colourful markets, quirky events and shopping‌ the stunning towns and villages of the Cotswolds will always surprise you!

One for the bucket list Watch cheese rolling or shin kicking at one of our quirky festivals
THE NORTH... The Cotswolds has some fantastic places to stay, visit www.cotswolds.com for more details.
Whilst the famous and popular towns of the north Cotswolds such as Cheltenham, Broadway, Bourtonon-the-Water, Burford and Chipping Norton feature in every guidebook, head off the beaten track and you can unearth hidden gems such as Bourtonon-the-Hill, Charlbury, Naunton and Snowshill. Each of the better known market towns like Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-onthe-Wold have a cluster of villages around them and these are decidedly Cotswold in character and well worth investigating. The bustling market towns in the east of the area are packed with historic buildings and specialist shops. Woodstock is home to Blenheim Palace but well worth a visit in its own right; Witney has beautiful riverside meadows and Burford has a stunning high street with a truly Cotswold feel. Winchcombe is an unspoilt market town set on the Cotswold edge. It’s known as being a centre for walkers and is a great place to base yourself if you want to enjoy the rural Cotswolds. A stay in the north Cotswolds brings Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford into perfect range for day visits.
THE SOUTH... The south Cotswolds covers the area around Cirencester, Stroud Valleys and the rural countryside around the River Thames – continuing down to north Wiltshire and towns such as Tetbury and Malmesbury. Basing yourself here puts Bristol and Bath within easy reach. The Cotswold Water Park is an incredible place for leisure, offering sports, walks and a beach with around 150 lakes set in 40 square miles. Despite its size, it is a well-kept secret just a few miles from Cirencester.
There is much joy to be had by visiting some of the little villages too – Chedworth, Filkins, Bibury, and of course Bampton which has been made famous as the location set for the village scenes in Downton Abbey. Whichever part of the Cotswolds you choose, the advice is to really make yourself at home by staying a little longer.
The ‘Five Valleys’ meet at the town of Stroud; linked by the lofty heights of Rodborough, Minchinhampton and Selsley Commons. Many artists and craftspeople live in these peaceful, hidden valleys. The surrounding pretty towns of Nailsworth, Painswick, Fairford, Lechlade-on-Thames and Tetbury are all lovely Cotswold market towns.

The Cotswolds has some fantastic places to visit, from vibrant villages to historic market towns.

BAMPTON A large village famous for its Morris dancing traditions celebrated at the Bampton Day of Dance. Parts of the village may seem familiar even to first time visitors as it was used for filming the village scenes in Downton Abbey.
BIBURY William Morris once called Bibury ‘the most beautiful village in England’ and it is still one of the prettiest today. Home to Bibury Trout Farm and iconic Arlington Row.
BOURTON-ONTHE-WATER One of the most famous Cotswold villages where you can enjoy the River Windrush with its beautiful bridges and the town’s excellent visitor attractions.
BURFORD
BROADWAY Famously beautiful and popular throughout the year. Lined with some great shops, restaurants, hotels and plenty of antique shops with Broadway Tower as an iconic viewpoint overlooking the town.
6 visit www.cotswolds.com
Full of Cotswold stone houses with hidden secrets that can be glimpsed through narrow alleyways and courtyards. Burford mercifully escaped any Victorian development and as you look down the steeply sloping High Street you will see an unbroken line of shop fronts and houses with nothing later than the 18th century. As well as the medieval market hall, The Tolsey, and the impressive wool church, make sure that you explore the quiet streets away from the main road.
The Cotswolds has some fantastic places to stay, visit www.cotswolds.com for more details.
CHARLBURY Nestling in the Evenlode Valley, Charlbury is surrounded by the remains of the Wychwood Forest. A great centre for walking, Charlbury also has a small local museum that charts the town’s past.

Historic architecture includes the stunning Grade I listed Pittville Pump Room, with The Wilson offering a dynamic exhibition programme and collections of international significance. Quality accommodation, shopping, and many dining options make this a town for all seasons.
CHIPPING CAMPDEN Chipping Campden is one of the best preserved and most historically important towns in the Cotswolds with a famously beautiful High Street, lovely thatched cottages and elegant Market Hall. This is a place to take in the atmosphere – surrounded by buildings such as Grevel House, Woolstaplers Hall and the fine Cotswolds wool church. On nearby Dover’s Hill the Cotswold Olimpicks began in the 17th century, and they are still celebrated every year – a bizarre mix of sports, games and village festivities.
CHIPPING NORTON Once an important centre for the wool trade, Chipping Norton was given a charter by King John in 1205 to hold a wool fair. Now it is a bustling, buzzing, working Cotswold market town with regular markets, a busy town centre and a great choice of independent shops and restaurants. It also has a small local museum, a successful theatre, leisure centre and even a lido.
CIRENCESTER Cirencester is a must-see thriving market town at the heart of the Cotswolds with ancient origins. The town was one of the most important places in Roman Britain, making the Corinium Museum well worth a visit. The town mixes old with new, having a vibrant arts centre with workshops, Britain’s oldest open air swimming pool and beautiful abbey grounds. The amazing selection of independent shops and restaurants sit alongside the ‘woolgothic’ church, which dominates the marketplace. 2017 sees the town hold events to celebrate 900 years of the abbey being founded.

Probably the most photographed villages in the Cotswolds…
THE SLAUGHTERS Considered to be some of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds attracting visitors from all over the world.
TEWKESBURY Situated where the Rivers Severn and Avon meet, Tewkesbury has a character all of its own and is one of the few places in the Cotswold area where you will see black and white half-timbered buildings. In fact, there are almost 400 listed buildings and this makes it popular with visitors who also enjoy spending time on the riverbanks, visiting the heritage centre and admiring the elegant Abbey.
TETBURY This thriving town boasts a wealth of architectural heritage, including its iconic Market House in the heart of the town built in 1655. Designed as the ‘Great Tolsey’ for the sale of wool and yarn it is still used for markets today. It is also famous for its royal connections with Highgrove and its gardens nearby. The town holds many events including the annual Woolsack Races.

The Cotswold year begins with the first flush of snowdrops where, in early spring, Painswick Rococo Garden, Colesbourne Park and Newark Park – a former Tudor hunting lodge – are must-visit locations. As the days begin to warm and daffodils make a welcome appearance, gardens all over the Cotswolds start bursting into life. Historic woodland, such as Woodchester Park, and Wildlife Nature Reserves offer lovely walks for bluebell spotting, while Cheltenham’s parks and Batsford and Westonbirt Arboreta become awash with blossom. In late spring and summer, the herbaceous borders at Hidcote Manor, Snowshill Manor, Cerney House Gardens and Bourton House Garden will surprise and delight. Kiftsgate Court and Sudeley Castle’s Queens’ Garden - named after the four English queens that walked within – become beautifully fragrant with roses. Historic Berkeley and Thornbury Castles are located in the south Cotswolds. Berkeley dates back to the 12th century and was the scene of the murder of Edward II. Walk in the footsteps of King Henry VIII, by staying at Thornbury as he did on his honeymoon with Anne Boleyn.

Kelmscott Manor was the summer home to William Morris and the lovely gardens were a constant source of inspiration. Broadway Tower was a favourite of Morris and is the highest little castle in the Cotswolds. This was the brainchild of the great 18th century landscape designer Capability Brown. The 2,000 acres of landscaped parkland at Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill and a World Heritage Site, were also landscaped by Brown. If the heat of summer gets too much, head to Jacobean-era Stanway House, where the world’s tallest gravity-fed water fountain will help cool you down. Another fine example of a period garden is Chastleton House with its Jacobean topiary, astronomical garden and croquet lawn. Rousham was named as one of Monty Don’s favourite gardens in the country with the walled garden and its herbacious borders. Designed in the 18th century by William Kent, it represents the first phase of English landscape design and remains largely unaltered since its conception. As summer turns to autumn and the trees take on a golden hue, dramatic colours can be seen throughout the ancient beech woodlands of the Cotswolds. Be sure not to miss the spectacular leaf displays at Batsford and Westonbirt.

ARTS AND CULTURE
The Cotswolds is a thriving cultural landscape, with art, theatre, live music and festivals all through the year.
ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT The landscapes of the Cotswolds have long-inspired artists and craftspeople, so it’s not surprising that William Morris took a shine to the area. Closely associated with the Arts & Crafts movement, the work of Morris is recognisable the world-over and often seen in fabric and wallpaper designs. Kelmscott Manor, near Lechlade, was once the summer home of Morris and his contemporaries. It contains an outstanding collection of artworks, furniture and textiles.
24 visit www.cotswolds.com
One of Morris’ first projects was to design the stained glass windows in Selsley Church, near Stroud. Important items and furniture from the movement can be found at The Wilson in Cheltenham, while Court Barn Museum provides an insightful history into the Chipping Campden Guild, and the history of the movement.

Arts Festivals
GORDON RUSSELL Renowned designer, Gordon Russell, was schooled in the Arts & Crafts tradition, leaving the Gordon Russell Design Museum as his legacy in Broadway. The town also has its own branch of the world-famous Ashmolean Museum. Nearby, Broadway Tower was used as a holiday retreat by Morris, Rossetti and Burne-Jones.
The SITE Festival takes place every April, showcasing contemporary art in and around Stroud. The annual Oxfordshire Artweeks, each May, is a great opportunity to view local artists at work in their studios. Stroud International Textiles hosts the annual Select Festival in May, bringing innovation and world-class designermakers to the Cotswolds. The Winchcombe Festival of Music and Arts, also in May, features an exciting mix of artists, poets, musicians and performance arts. For outdoor art, the biennial sculpture exhibition, Fresh Air, held in Quenington, provides a unique opportunity to see a creative mixture of traditionally modern and cutting-edge contemporary work in a stunning outdoor setting.
From Heritage Crafts to Contemporary Art The rich history of arts and crafts in the Cotswolds and a wealth of natural materials, gives plenty of inspiration to contemporary designers and makers. Cotswold Woollen Weavers in the village of Filkins houses a textile museum, design studio and shop dedicated to traditionally woven woollen cloth. At award-winning Aston Pottery, near Bampton, observe how ceramics are made using traditional methods. Winchcombe Pottery makes some of the finest domestic pottery in the world. Visit Conderton Pottery, at the foot of Bredon Hill, for a lovely range of kitchen, table and homeware.
A number of renowned, contemporary artists have chosen to locate their studios in the Stroud Valleys, which plays host to a thriving arts scene. Look out for open studio weekends, which take place in different towns throughout the Cotswolds. The flagship shop of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen is located at The Wilson in Cheltenham. Galleries such as The Pangolin in Chalford, SVA in Stroud, Cirencester’s New Brewery Arts, West Ox Arts in Bampton and SOTA Gallery in Witney, display a changing selection of contemporary artworks, sculpture and crafts. Bath’s Victoria Art Gallery features works from the traditional to the modern day.
Art Courses Escape to the beautiful surroundings of the Cotswolds and learn a new skill such as painting or printmaking. Stay in the new Barrel Store at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester or at Hawkwood College near Stroud, both offering residential courses. The Corinium Museum in Cirencester, Museum in the Park in Stroud and Prema Arts near Uley host day or weekend workshops including jewellery, mosaics and printing. Nature in Art in Twigworth runs courses ranging from botanical drawing to willow art. 25

RELAX AND INDULGE
One for the bucket list Take afternoon tea at a Cotswold country house 30 visit www.cotswolds.com
Sweet treats The Cotswolds offer some fabulous locations to treat yourself to the tradition of afternoon tea. Depending on the time of year, enjoy high tea on the lawn surrounded by beautiful gardens, or sit down and relax in front of a cosy log fire.
Relax & unwind
Take some time out from the norm and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Recharge your batteries in the Cotswolds with a healthy dose of fresh air, rural landscapes, fine food and, of course, a spot of pampering.
For true indulgence, spoil yourself as a day visitor or overnight guest at one of the Cotswolds’ luxurious spa hotels. Enjoy a taste of quintessential England and tempt your taste buds with a Cotswold afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and sweet treats.
Luxurious Cotswold manor houses such as Barnsley House near Cirencester, Calcot Manor near Tetbury, Cotswold House Hotel in Chipping Campden, Ellenborough Park near Cheltenham, Heythrop Park Resort near Chipping Norton, the Old Swan & Minster Mill at Minster Lovell, Tewkesbury Park Hotel and Wyck Hill Hotel near Stow-on-the-Wold are havens of relaxation offering full-service spas and pampering treatments. Day visitors can enjoy Britain’s only natural thermal spa at Bath Thermae, where you can relax in the warm, mineral-rich waters of an open-air rooftop pool overlooking this beautiful, historic city. Plenty of other day spas or overnight retreats can be found throughout the Cotswolds to offer a relaxing break.
Ellenborough Park, near Cheltenham, provides grand surroundings for afternoon tea in their Great Hall, or if you fancy taking tea at one of the most haunted hotels in the country, try the Bear in Woodstock. Eynsham Hall near Witney is one of Oxfordshire’s great country houses, where you can enjoy tea on the champagne terrace overlooking the gardens. At The Painswick, in the town of the same name, a savoury afternoon tea menu is on offer in addition to the more traditional sweet version. Lords of the Manor in Upper Slaughter and Barnsley House offer gorgeous gardens for an indulgent, outdoor tea. For a taste of royalty, book onto a champagne tea and guided gardens tour at Highgrove House, home to the Prince of Wales. Mayfield House, near Malmesbury, is a good tip for a traditional Cotswold cream tea, and Three Ways House near Chipping Campden, home of the world-famous Pudding Club, is an obvious choice.

WINE AND DINE Fresh, fabulous and found locally, the Cotswolds offers an amazing selection of quality food and drink.
One for the bucket list Drink a pint of cider in Laurie Lee’s favourite pub, The Woolpack 32 visit www.cotswolds.com
The Cotswolds has earned itself a well-deserved reputation with foodies, not only for the quality of eating establishments throughout the area (including a sprinkling of Michelin stars), but also for the mouth-watering array of local produce. Single Gloucester cheese and Gloucester Old Spot pork have been awarded Protected Designation of Origin status. While Smart’s has become well-known for making the Double Gloucester used for the famous cheese rolling. Upton Smokery specialises in traditionally smoked meat, game and fish. Other local favourites include Tewkesbury Mustard, Bibury trout, Stinking Bishop cheese and Hobbs House bread. Gourmands will love the choice of farm shops and specialist stores such as Daylesford Organic near Kingham, William’s Fishmarket & Foodhall in Nailsworth and The Cotswold Cheese Company with branches in Burford, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-onthe-Wold. Gloucester Services (M5), sister-station to the renowned Tebay, has become a destination in its own right, showcasing local produce, and featuring in the Good Food Guide.
Cooking on Gas Perfect your culinary skills or learn the art of bread or cheese-making at some of the famous cookery schools in the Cotswolds. With provenance and seasonality being so important, here’s your chance to learn about cooking from field to fork, in restored barns and state-of-the-art kitchens tucked away in beautiful, rural settings. For a truly natural experience, Daylesford Organic and Thyme at Southrop offer foraging amongst their many courses. At Foodworks, seasonal cooking is key. At Abbey Home Farm, learn to reproduce delicious vegetarian recipes. But the best bit, of course, is sampling your work for lunch or dinner afterwards!
Farmers’ markets appear regularly in most of our towns, as well as some smaller Cotswold villages. Visiting one of these markets is a great way to discover the best local produce, direct from the producer. Food and drink festivals, which take place throughout the year, include Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Blenheim and Witney. Jamie Oliver’s The Big Feastival is a unique celebration of food and music held on Alex James’ farm near Kingham; the Wilderness Festival offers long-table banquets overseen by top chefs. Don’t miss a traditional Cotswold afternoon tea in a village tearoom or cafe, or, for something stronger, a pint of local ale in a traditional country pub. Both Wychwood and Hook Norton Breweries, makers of hand-crafted fine beers, offer tours. Other local breweries include Battledown, Donnington, Prescott and Stroud. The Cotswold Beer and Frocester Beer Festivals are popular annual fixtures. If spirits are more your thing, the Cotswolds Distillery is the first full distillery in the Cotswolds and offers guided tours.

LINCOLN FARM PARK
Attractive, high quality Cotswold stone cottages located on historic country estate mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. Muir Cottage was converted from an 18th century barn to a design inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement that established in the Cotswolds in the 19th century, resulting in an array of stone mullioned windows, leaded lights, exposed beams and period furnishings. The Bothy has been created from a 1700s Cotswold barn and a 1920s kennel building and is a truly unique cottage. Postlip is beautifully situated in a hidden coombe on the leeward side of the Cotswolds’ highest hill, yet is only minutes from Winchcombe, a classic Cotswold “wool town” with excellent shops and restaurants.
