Northwestern Foundation, Inc. Annual Report 2012
Dear Foundation Members: It seems almost impossible that it has been a year since I updated you on the state of Northwestern Oklahoma State University. It is difficult to summarize the past 12 months in just a few words, but clearly the period has been one of change, challenge and great success. The region surrounding Northwestern has experienced change on an unprecedented scale during the past year. The area is now the second most productive and active region in the nation for the exploration and production of oil and natural gas. Communities across northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas are now booming with activity, reversing the decades-long outward migration of residents. New businesses are being developed, unemployment is almost nonexistent and new wealth is being created among many landowners. This new found wealth is being shared by many with Northwestern for the benefit of its students, and we are most grateful to those who have shared their good fortune with us. In so many ways, this region is the envy of the entire nation. Of course, change of this magnitude does not come without challenge. The demand for workers of all skill levels in the energy sector, and the wage inflation that comes with it, has made recruiting and retaining students more difficult. A shortage of housing has driven up home values and students who live off-campus have seen their monthly rent increase dramatically. Our communities are beginning to address the challenges brought about by this rapid growth of economic activity and Northwestern will play an active role in the development of regional and community plans. While our region adapts to this period of change and challenge, Northwestern has experienced a year of unprecedented success. The academic reputation of programs offered by our Division of Business has been enhanced by gaining national accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Four academic departments now hold national academic accreditation. Other academic successes include: •Graduates of the Division of Nursing have attained a 100 percent pass rate on state licensure examinations for the third consecutive year; •Kylene Whiteman of Woodward was named the state’s top social work undergraduate student; •Tara Woodmansee of Woodward become the University’s third Brad Henry International Scholar; •Communications instructor Melanie Wilderman was named teacher of the year by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists; and •Agriculture instructor Mindi Clark was selected as the nation’s top new agriculture education instructor by the Association of Career and Technical Education. In July, Northwestern also reached another institutional goal as it was accepted into the membership process of Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Affiliation with the NCAA will further strengthen the academic and athletic reputation of Northwestern, provide our student-athletes with a better college experience and align the University with the most recognizable brand in college sports. These are just a few examples of the many successes that we have experienced in the past year. Our students are the ultimate beneficiary of these accomplishments, and, in one way or another, each can be traced back to the support we receive from members of the Northwestern Foundation. Each gift to the Foundation, regardless of size, assists students and their families in the pursuit of what is still an American dream - a college education. To each member of the Foundation, I offer my appreciation and gratitude. With your continued to support, we will continue to provide the Northwestern experience to our students for generations to come. Sincerely,
Janet Cunningham, Ed.D. President, Northwestern Oklahoma State University Class of 1976

A Letter from the Northwestern Foundation Chair A Letter from the Northwestern Foundation CEO Madison Malone: I see home Marshall Bell: I see support Dana Miller: I see the people Josh Stephens: I see the opportunities President’s Association Millennium Club Donor Recognition Year in Review Financial Report Statement of Activities Northwestern Foundation Board of Trustees Northwestern Foundation Staff
Sometimes it takes a moment to stop and close your eyes to truly focus. With what sometimes seem like mile-a-minute schedules, four students sat down, closed their eyes, and thought about Northwestern. Not everyone sees things the same way, but because of your generosity these students get to experience Northwestern and see for themselves.
Take a moment, turn the page, and see things through their eyes.
Dear Friends of Northwestern and the NWOSU Foundation: While contemplating what to say in this my final letter as chair of the Executive Committee of the Foundation, I found myself reflecting on some of the events this past year at Northwestern. Homecoming, of course, is a time-honored tradition and is always a fun and busy three days. Our Donor Appreciation Dinner with guests Jet & Cord McCoy was lots of fun and was well attended. The surprise dinner and recognition for Judge Dean Linder for his years of service to Northwestern as broadcaster for many, many games was an exciting time at NWOSU and had many people crying and laughing throughout the evening. Northwestern’s Sports Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony welcomed four deserving young people into that long list of Hall of Fame inductees. I could continue with many more activities that your Northwestern Foundation and staff either provides or helps with, but there just isn’t enough room here. But, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what the Foundation is best at doing and that is raising funds for scholarships for our students. This year, your foundation, with the help of many donors and friends, has raised $4,414,319, which is the largest total of funds raised in one year. Also, the endowment is climbing steadily, and with your continued support and contributions, that total will continue to grow and the Foundation can provide the maximum scholarships possible to our students. The Executive Committee, the Investment Committee and the Governance Committee, along with the Development Committee, have all worked very diligently in recruiting new students, as well as keeping those students in school. I would like to thank the Foundation staff for all of their hard work, devotion and dedication necessary to help our students. Also, all of you who are serving or have served as trustees and committee members are to be applauded for all that you do for the Foundation. Without you, our Foundation would not be as successful as it is today. In closing, I would like to thank you for allowing me to serve as your chair for the last two years. It has been a very rewarding experience and I am proud to have been a part of this outstanding organization that always focuses on the students and their needs here at NWOSU! Thank you again for the honor of serving you. Ride Rangers Ride!

4 Annual Report 2012
To my Friends of the Foundation, I almost find it incomprehensible that another year has passed. The changes that have occurred on our campus and in our community are breathtaking and almost creates, for me, a feeling of traveling through time. I am beginning to believe that the only thing we can count as a constant is change. Although the constant change can sometimes become overwhelming, I believe if we can embrace these changes and never stop learning, we can continue to feel young and vital. Reflect with me for a moment. If you are like me, a child of the ‘60s, you would have watched Star Trek and considered it science fiction. I, like so many others, watched with awe and envy as Captain Kirk and Dr. Spock flew through space carrying on their belts a communication device that today would be obsolete. (Note: I am still waiting with impatience to be able to be “beamed” to my
next travel destination.) Let’s go back just 10 years ago. Would you have ever believed back then that your certificates of deposit would be earning less than 1 percent at your local bank or that you could get a 30-year mortgage for less than 4 percent? How about what you see on television now? Would you have believed the number of shows that fall into the category of “reality TV?” Ten years ago would you have expected you would be able to surf the Internet, check the weather, watch a basketball game or play scrabble with several of your friends all on your hand-held phone? My point is that with everything changing around us, it sometimes feels there are few things we can depend on anymore. But, I can offer one thing that has remained constant throughout all of our lifetimes—the high value of a quality education at Northwestern. That has been unchanged since the university was formed in 1897. Another element that I hope never changes is your dedication to our students’ success. As members of the Foundation, you have continually made significant differences in our world with your investments in the young people who attend Northwestern. A few of these positive investments are what we have again chosen to share with you this year. These are only a few stories of the lives changed because of your gifts of support to our students. I encourage you to read these accounts and garner a little of the excitement that we gather almost every day as we see these students succeed in college and later in life. By the way, we had another outstanding year. For the second year in a row we have set a new record in total funds raised, and yes, our endowment is bigger than it has ever been. But many of you have heard me say before: It is not about the numbers or the money. It is about the people and the lives changed through our commitment to investing in our young people, our community and our world. Thanks for being part of the solution for so many. 6 Annual Report 2012
“When I close my eyes and think of Northwestern, I see home. I see where I belong.”
M
adison Malone, a graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University, found her way to Alva when everything fell into place. A native of Valley Center, Kan., she didn’t really know where she was going to continue her education, but her mom, Pam, was a major influence in her choice to further her education. “My mom is a huge motivator, and she, along with my dad, have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams and set goals.” Her first goal was to go to college and in high school she realized she wanted to become a teacher. A 1984 graduate of Northwestern, Pam grew up in Laverne, a small town an hour from Alva. When Madison’s family came back to Oklahoma to visit her grandparents during her senior year, her grandfather asked if she ever considered Northwestern. Up to that point, she hadn’t. She had driven by it many times on the way to visit her grandparents and heard stories from her mom about Northwestern but never imagined she would end up there. “Before we got online and did research, we didn’t think it would be possible,” Madison said. They figured between out of state tuition and housing the cost would be too outrageous to consider, but it wasn’t. With so many opportunities to receive financial assistance, Northwestern was more than within reach. Her out-of-state tuition was waived because her mom was an alumna, and after participating in Ranger Preview, cheerleading and President’s Leadership Class, Northwestern went from not even considered to being her best option, and not just financially. “Being able to have a class with the president teaching meant a lot,” Madison said. “I got to know the president one on one. It was a class of 12, so I really got to know other leaders on campus and I made a lot of friends through that.” On top of being apart of the President’s Leadership Class, and the cheerleading team, Madison participated in the Student Government Association and was a member of Student Oklahoma Education Association. Through SGA, she met the governor of Oklahoma, and through SOEA, she got the chance to get on a plane to Chicago for a conference where she could network with other young teachers getting ready to start their careers. The skills that she has developed while being a part of these organizations are some that she will take with her throughout her professional career. Madison is now a fourth grade teacher at Cherokee Public Schools and is working on her master’s at Northwestern. Madison said when she looks back on her time at Northwestern she will see the opportunities, the professors and the place where she belongs. “This is where I belong; I would never go back and trade Northwestern for anything.”

“When I close my eyes and think of Northwestern, I see support. Everybody is willing to help you in any way that they can.”
When Marshall Bell arrived on campus, it was a bit of a culture shock. From millions to a few
thousand, it was a big change for the Houston native who graduated high school with a thousand. Alva is not the biggest place in the world, but it is what you make it, he said. “It’s a big culture shock, but it’s a good experience for me,” Marshall said. “Everyone needs a new taste of life. You don’t need to be in the same place all the time. It’s a good learning experience.” The senior guard was recruited to play basketball at a number of schools, but the friendly, smalltown environment was one thing that attracted him to Northwestern. Coaches Andrew Brown and Shane Hansen attended his practice and games and showed a strong interest in Marshall. “I wanted to be somewhere I was really wanted,” Marshall said. “When I came here, I liked the university and the friendly people, just the good atmosphere that Northwestern had.” Support in the form of scholarships has allowed Marshall to concentrate on his pursuits, on the court and in the classroom. “It’s a blessing because sometimes I overhear a student saying he’s got to go to work,” Marshall said. “He’s got to pay for tuition for a class or room and board. It’s definitely a blessing and a humbling experience because you don’t have to stress about that kind of stuff.” At Northwestern, Marshall is studying criminal justice. Being around family friends in the field and having participated in pistol competitions, he developed a strong interest in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Border Patrol, and FBI growing up. One day, Marshal hopes his Northwestern education will lead to a career as a federal agent. For now, he plans to continue playing basketball, the sport that brought him to the university. “I just love the sport period and meeting new guys all the time,” Marshall said. “That competitive nature that everybody has just brings out the best in everybody. You get to travel and see different parts of the country.” The energy of Percefull Fieldhouse makes for a great atmosphere, Marshall said, but that’s not the only place he gets cheered on. “You can go to any restaurant or anywhere around town and somebody will ask you about the season. They say they enjoy watching you. Little kids look up to you everywhere. It’s a good feeling and it makes you proud to be here.”

“When I close my eyes and think of Northwestern, I see the people. I see the people, the smiles. I see the people in the stands. I see diversity, community and acceptance of individuality.”
A
lva native Dana Miller’s dream was always knocking. The questions were constant—Are you singing? Are you singing?—but, lately, the question has changed. Now she’s most often asked when she’s moving to New York. It’s been a journey, but Dana returned to Northwestern to pursue her true passion of performing. “I started out as a computer science major but I was distracting myself with music,” Dana said. “It took me about 10 years to really regroup and refocus and pursue what I started so many years ago.” A non-traditional student, she has taken every opportunity to be on stage and perfect her craft. Theatre has become very near and dear to her, an ideal companion to singing. “Theatre has always stood out to me because there’s a musical structure to every phrase we say and there’s a beat and rhythm to everything we do. It just goes hand in hand with being a vocalist,” she said. A member of all three Northwestern choirs and a regular in university theatre productions, Dana is finishing her bachelor’s degree in music before she’s off to New York City in the spring to pursue a career performing in the entertainment industry. Her sights are set on Broadway. “There are apparently some roles that I fit because of my size and my voice type that the typical 20 year old can’t necessarily fill,” she said. “I’ve been told by several contacts that my life experience is going to help me in the long run pursuing those types of roles—the moms, the nemesis, that kind of thing.” Despite the distance, Dana is excited and thankful for the encouragement of Northwestern and the Alva community. “Even though I’ll be up there by myself, I won’t be alone. I didn’t get here by myself. It has taken the whole community of Northwestern and Alva pushing me and pulling me up some days.” She wouldn’t have been able to get this far without the faculty and supporters of the fine arts, like Donovan Reichenberger.“He has been a huge contributor to the fine arts department, and a substantial support system and believer of all of us. He believes in every one of us, and if he didn’t, he wouldn’t invest in us like he has. Without him, a lot of these kids wouldn’t have a way to go to school full time and give it all of their focus.”
Dana Miller Class of 2012
To Dana, Northwestern is one big family. Whether you’re involved in fine arts or athletics, everybody supports everyone’s endeavors and dreams, she said. “I will always remember the fact that without them I wouldn’t be able to construct my dreams,” Dana said. “Without them, there wouldn’t be me. I wouldn’t be on a stage.”

“When I close my eyes and think of Northwestern, I see the opportunities it’s allowed me to have. It’s made me who I am and who I’m going to be.”
“A
s far as if I thought I was going to go to college as a kid, yeah,” Josh Stephens said. “I just didn’t know how I was going to get there.” Growing up, Josh always tried to do what was expected of him. He tried to do what he was supposed to do when he was supposed to do it. It was just the way he was raised. So after high school, the next obvious step was college. For him, the clear choice was Northwestern. “I honestly believe God brought me here because it was the last school I looked at,” he said. Josh visited Northwestern with intentions of playing basketball, but whenever he arrived, the mass communication program stood out to him. “Northwestern turned out to have the best mass communication program that I had seen at any of the colleges I visited. I feel like that’s the reason why I came here.” What appealed to Josh most was the fact that students didn’t just focus on one aspect of mass communication. He would get a taste of everything: public relations, journalism and broadcast news. He felt, in today’s society, being well rounded would serve him best. He could learn things by doing them, and polish his skills along the way. Josh couldn’t have made his dreams of a college education a reality without his mom pushing him every step. A single parent, her work ethic was an inspiration, and she always made an effort to be at each and every game Josh and his brother participated in. The way she juggled things and managed to make it look so easy makes Josh want to handle things the same way, not only for himself but also because he knows his brother, a Northwestern sophomore, looks to him the way Josh looks to his mom. When Josh decided to earn his degree at Northwestern, he took his mom’s advice to heart. “You always look back and want to know what if,” Josh said. “That’s one of the main things my mom taught me…don’t ever wonder what if, always make it happen.” Thanks to scholarship support, Josh will never have to look back and wonder. “That means a lot to me because it’s not only just my friends and family but also people who don’t know me that are willing to give me a shot,” Josh said. “If you’re going to give me a shot, I’m going to take advantage of it. I wouldn’t have been able to go to school without their generosity.”

Hansel joins Foundation staff The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of Delana (Allen) Hansel to its staff in January 2012. An alumna of the university, Hansel has joined the Northwestern Foundation as financial manager and is responsible for accounts payable and receivable. She is also critical in the management of the Foundation’s investments and the preparation of the Foundation’s yearly audit. “We are extremely pleased to have Delana on board,” said Skeeter Bird, Northwestern Foundation CEO. “She is a great fit for our organization and her positive, can-do attitude and superb work ethic will serve her well in this position. Delana is learning so quickly, and we feel blessed to have her as part of this organization.” Originally from Cherokee, Hansel earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 2009 and her master’s degree in business administration from Northeastern State University in 2011.
While attending Northwestern, she worked in the recruitment and retention offices, and she most recently was employed by ACB Bank in Cherokee. She and her husband, Clifton, live in Cherokee. Hansel fulfills the position held by Misti Knopf for more than ten years. “Misti was extremely critical to our operation,” Bird said. “The responsibilities of this position have grown so much since I took over seven years ago, but Misti was able to grow with every challenge.
