LETTER FROM THE FOUNDATION CHAIR: As parents of two young children, my husband and I observe – and usually enjoy – the circle of engagement and connection growing beyond the walls of our home. Dallas and Audrey no longer rely solely on the influence of their parents and other close relatives. They are connecting with teachers and coaches; with friends and their friends’ parents and siblings; and with many others who are interacting within their lives. While there is constant oversight for their well-being, we understand and appreciate the experience of life and the spirit of human attachment. My time on the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association Board has provided me the opportunity to admire and appreciate the connection between students, faculty, staff and community. The “shoulder-to-shoulder, roll up the sleeves, we will get it done” camaraderie and collective drive to secure an excellent collegiate experience at Northwestern have produced results that make the Ranger community proud.
Northwestern’s first capital campaign – Imagine Northwestern: One Campaign. Countless Opportunities. – showcases the Spirit of Ranger Nation. In spite of continuing State budget cuts, individuals and groups who understand the critical importance of a healthy higher education infrastructure choose to invest in Northwestern. My Board colleagues and I enjoy sharing the news of our first doctorate program – the Doctor of Nursing Practice – with the community. We are intrigued with the possibilities afforded to students with the robotics curriculum and we are grateful to the donors who provided the funding for both the design lab and the build lab that will greatly enhance this area of study. We are thrilled to hear about the Rangers and Northwestern friends who have reconnected both with Northwestern and with the people who influenced them during their collegiate careers. They are making new friends through the Northwestern connection. They also are giving back to Northwestern with gifts that serve to enhance the academic and athletic environments, as well as the student life experience. I have many people to thank for my wonderful experience serving as the Board chair the last few years; I will do my best to personally connect with each of them to do just that. My responsibility as a Ranger, however, is far from done. I will continue connecting others to Northwestern, including potential students, alumni and friends. I ask all of you to join me in this effort; the power of connection within our Ranger community sets up Northwestern students for success. All the best,
Megan Darrow, DDS Chair, Northwestern Foundation Class of 2002

DEAR FRIENDS OF NORTHWESTERN: As I prepare this letter to share with you as part of the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association’s annual report, I am reminded of the journey that has led us to this point in the Imagine Northwestern campaign, and the impact this initiative has had on Oklahoma and points beyond. The theme for this year’s annual report is Imagine, Invest, Inspire. These three words are powerful and I want to share with you how they have affected Northwestern. Imagine. Six years ago, Northwestern published the strategic plan Rising Above. The plan shared our desire to move Northwestern forward, despite the challenging climate that surrounded higher education in Oklahoma. The five strategic directions outlined in the plan provided us with a roadmap to strengthen our academic programs, enhance the student experience and position the institution as the center of service for the region. At nearly the same time, the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association developed their own strategic plan aimed at providing the resources necessary for the University to succeed in meeting the goals of its plan. These collaborative plans provided the impetus for the first comprehensive fundraising campaign in Northwestern’s history. Invest. Of course, for any campaign to be successful, it requires people of vision, passion and generosity to invest in the mission. At Northwestern, we have been blessed by alumni and friends who share all three characteristics. At the time of this letter, you have invested nearly $25 million in the campaign. Your investment has allowed Northwestern the opportunity to offer its first doctoral program, a program that will educate nurse practitioners to help fill a critical shortage of primary care providers in rural Oklahoma. Your investment also has allowed us to provide more scholarship funds, improve campus facilities and offer more academic opportunities to students. Inspire. Perhaps the greatest dividend of your investment in Northwestern has been the inspiration that has been instilled in our students. You have inspired a young man from Alfalfa County to chase his dream of becoming a doctor, and who now is in residency at the Mayo Clinic. You inspired a young woman from northwest Oklahoma, who never believed attending college was an option, to excel in science and spend two summers studying sea turtles in Costa Rica. Your gift has meaning to every student at Northwestern. Many now look forward to the day when they can give back and make a difference. I will close by thanking you for your imagination, your investment and your inspiration. You continue to make this University a place where education still brings dreams to life. Respectfully,
Janet Cunningham, Ed.D. President

ANNUAL REPORT 2017
“Northwestern’s capital campaign already has exceeded our expectations. Many have stepped up and taken us to a goal that is almost $8 million higher than we originally imagined possible. Thank you for providing new opportunities and opening the doors for students eager to make a difference in the world.”
LETTER FROM THE CEO: Dear Ranger family, I love to read. I usually read non-fiction and greatly appreciate books that challenge my perspective of the world around me. I recently completed what I found to be a thought-provoking book called “The Tipping Point, How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference” by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell describes different social epidemics that are greatly influenced by smaller, seemingly insignificant things that actually made all of the difference. One example is when someone yawns in a room full of people and the behavior suddenly causes others to yawn. Another example is how the excitement surrounding the recent solar eclipse caused thousands to alter their daily routine and act extraordinarily for a short period of time. As I read this book, I struggled with the application. By the end of the book, I realized an epiphany of how Gladwell’s lessons can be applied to what we do. During the 12 years of working at the Foundation and Alumni Association, one of our goals has been to influence a cultural change of connecting and giving at Northwestern. We have made
excellent progress toward this goal with the limited resources available. Repeatedly, we have embraced and executed progressive, successful ideas provided by our alumni or generously shared by another University. After reading Gladwell’s book, I feel there is yet another “something” we should try that could make all the difference to the success of our Northwestern. “Tipping Point…” sparked my belief that we could be close to what Gladwell refers to as a “social epidemic”. Specifically, this epidemic would infect our alumni with the “bug” of reconnecting with their University and investing both their time and financial resources in Northwestern’s future success. We need this one phenomenal idea to take us to the tipping point and make an epic impact on our University. Northwestern’s capital campaign already has exceeded our expectations. Many have stepped up and taken us to a goal that is almost $8 million higher than we originally imagined possible. Thank you for providing new opportunities and opening the doors for students eager to make a difference in the world. Weekly, we are hearing from
alums who we have not heard from in decades. We visit with alumni who tell us how Northwestern made a significant difference for them. Many become emotional when they share their story. Some choose to come back and to give back. Others have yet to make the transition between the emotional connection and their potential role in securing Northwestern’s future. We want to hear from our Ranger Nation with ideas to get us beyond our own tipping point. How do we leverage the success of our capital campaign to further compel the majority of our 12, 344 alums to get involved, at some level, with their University? Share your ideas with us; we look forward to the conversation. Ride, Rangers, Ride.

eing trilingual has its advantages. Bruno Miguel, ’14, is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish – but including computer languages, he could be considered quadrilingual. Hailing from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Miguel found his way to Northwestern after becoming a high school exchange student in Mooreland, Okla. Like any male high schooler, video games were nothing more than a form of entertainment until he saw an opportunity to make some money. At the young age of 15, Miguel started designing, creating and selling his own video games to friends, making enough money off his first game to pay for a trip to Disney World. He designs multi-player, role-playing games (RPG) in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting, imagined by Miguel. “I enjoy the creativity and problem-solving that comes with making programs,” Miguel said. “It is fun and rewarding to me at the same time.” Not only does he create video games, he also has created a mobile device app for Oklahoma Research Day, a database for Northwestern’s English department and a website for the Alva Kiwanis organization. He found all of these opportunities through the computer science department at Northwestern. “The computer science faculty
does a great job at not only pushing us to learn the material, but learning how to apply it with real-world experience. Now with the new build lab we have amazing facilities and resources that allow us to imagine the possibilities – there are no limits.” While at Northwestern, Miguel was a member of the Game Programming team where he participated in several competitions, bringing home the first place trophy at the Tulsa Heartland Gaming Competition in 2016 and second place honors in 2017. His game also was selected second for the People’s Choice Award in 2017. “I remember winning first place at the competition in 2016, holding the trophy and hearing them announcing my name. All the Northwestern faculty and students there stood up and celebrated with me. I knew I had made the right choice coming to Northwestern after that.” He says Northwestern and its faculty taught him how to go after things he wants in life, and he is doing just that. Miguel is now pursuing a master’s degree in structural engineering at Vrije University in Brussels, Belgium (VUB). “I chose to go to VUB because I want to know the world before settling down.”

fter investing eight years of his life to his education, Clay Reed, ‘13, had earned the right to place “M.D.” after his name upon graduating from the University of Oklahoma’s College of Medicine in May 2017. His hard work also snagged him a spot in the residency program at the highly esteemed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he began work this past summer. “The Mayo Clinic was my number one choice in residency programs so I was really excited to go where I wanted,” Reed said. “When I found out I was accepted, it felt like the last piece of the puzzle. The last eight years of school had finally been worth it.” But before becoming Dr. Reed, the Cherokee, Okla., native’s educational journey started right here at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where a young man with big aspirations faced his first challenges. “I took Dr. [Aaron] Place’s comparative vertebra anatomy class my sophomore year. There had never been an underclassman who had taken that class before and I remember thinking to myself, ‘If I can just get through this class, I’ll be able to make it through to medical school.’ That was a monumental turning point that helped me decide to pursue the medical field.” As a double major in biology and chemistry, Reed says Northwestern’s courses and professors helped him excel in

his post-baccalaureate education. “I was equally if not better prepared than the majority of my class at OU. Not only was I able to start and go smoothly into medical school, but I was able to excel quickly due to the biology and chemistry courses at Northwestern. You truly receive a personalized education at Northwestern.” While he was invested in his education and future, generous donors were investing in him. Reed was a member of the President’s Leadership Class and Northwestern Scholar Ambassadors, both of which are highly-selective scholarship opportunities. He also received several academic department scholarships including the Claude LaChance and Vernon McNally scholarships. “A lot of people don’t realize how much tuition and interest rates have gone up and how much their gifts help students,” Reed said. “I am so appreciative of the help I received. These donors are so generous to be helping us through school to achieve our academic dreams. I know for me it’s been life changing.” Now, it’s his turn to invest in the lives of others as a physician specializing in internal oncology. “I love that I can help people. Being able to merge the ability to study basic sciences and at the same time directly applying that and changing someone’s life is incredible.”

hile many college students spend their summer breaks rejuvenating from the past semester or working a part-time job, Northwestern sophomore Carlie Edstrom spent a month of hers practicing mock missions and drills, shooting 50-caliber machine guns and tirelessly working to pass a physical training test. Joining the National Guard was never something Edstrom put much thought into. She already had a plan in place – Go to college; get an education degree; become a teacher – it was simple, or so it seemed. However, after visiting with a recruiter while a student at Alva High School, she started to realize her simple plan could result in costing her years of debt. “I always looked up to people I saw in their uniforms, but I never really considered enlisting until I realized it could help pay for my college education.” With the assistance of the military and the Alva Incentive Scholarship at Northwestern, Edstrom gets to focus on what she wants most in life – to inspire the minds of her future students. “I want to impact peoples’ lives and I feel being a teacher is a great way to make an impact on someone’s life early on. When they are young, that’s when their minds are developing, creating and
discovering who they want to be. I hope to inspire my future students to truly value the power of education.” Edstrom, an elementary education major, says she appreciates how the professors at Northwestern are preparing her for her career in the classroom. “My professors have all been very helpful – even non-education department professors. They don’t just give you the information, they incorporate how the material will be helpful for teaching students. Last semester in Dr. [Steven] Maier’s physical science class, he showed us how we could teach the same material we were learning in class to different age groups. He gave me confidence in knowing I’d be able to successfully teach science in my future classroom, no matter the grade level.” Her experience inside the classroom reaffirms her love for teaching. While serving as an AmeriCorps member last year at Longfellow Elementary, she worked one-on-one as a tutor for second and third graders. “Some of the kids at Longfellow were so excited to work with me and I became an important figure in their education. They inspired me and made me feel like I am going down the right path. I just want to make learning fun and creative. That’s my goal.”
