LETTER FROM THE CHAIR: A t the end of July 2019, I engaged with 27 colleagues for a full day of rich dialogue regarding the next five years of strategic goals for the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association. Participants included fellow trustees, President Janet Cunningham and members of her senior staff, alumni board members and the employees of the Foundation & Alumni office. Every single individual was fully invested in the mission and vision of the organization. Every single individual was actively engaged. Every. Single. Individual. The accomplishments from the previous five-year plan are impressive. Our endowed programs – chairs, professorships and lectureships – have grown to an impressive total of 70. This collective investment supports academic excellence, providing funding for faculty support and program enhancement. This type of investment made it possible to introduce our Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which will be graduating its inaugural class in the spring of 2020. During the recently completed Capital Campaign, 42 endowed scholarships have been added. This has helped to increase student scholarship support from 55 percent to 83 percent. The infrastructure of our Alva campus has changed, as well. The addition and/or renovation of learning labs – nursing, two robotics labs, two early childhood education labs and a literacy center – have created new opportunities for our students in nursing, computer science and education. The Jim Dunning Performance Center provides an indoor practice facility
for student-athletes and coaches in baseball, softball, golf and soccer. And if you haven’t seen the renovation of our Fine Arts building, with brick and mortar restoration and its new windows and doors, you are missing an amazing transformation of this beloved landmark on Northwestern’s Alva campus. The review of the many accomplishments from the last few years resulted in energy and motivation as we began work in planning our strategy and goals for the next five years. We realize we must maintain the enthusiastic drive and motivation that supported our recent successful Capital Campaign ending in April 2019. Our Northwestern is an institution of excellence, and we promise to continue communicating our achievements moving forward. I am immensely proud of Northwestern Oklahoma State University. On behalf of my fellow trustees, I thank you for your investment in our students and in our Northwestern. Please continue to be the ambassadors of Northwestern and let your Ranger Pride show. Ride, Rangers, Ride.

As an alum, a donor, or both, you should feel pride in what we, together, have accomplished. Our University is as strong and impactful today as it has ever been. Because of your support to scholarships, we still have students who can choose to become teachers and know that it will not financially ruin them before they graduate. Because of your support to the Athletic Department, we are one of the few NCAA Division II Universities that allows our student-athletes to choose any degree path that is offered on our campus. Because of your support to the endowed chair programs, we still have excellent faculty members in our classrooms. Because of your support to infrastructure, we have three campus sites that are the pride of their respective communities. Because of your personal commitment, we have so much to be grateful for; but, the work is never complete. I agree with the quote from J.J. Watt: “Success isn’t owned. It’s leased. And rent is due every day.” Every day Northwestern has to strive to be better and stronger. If we stand still, we will be behind. That is why we need your continued commitment to Northwestern and the students who attend here. Thank you for the wonderful road behind us and for your willingness to travel the path ahead. DEAR FRIENDS OF NORTHWESTERN:
W
hen work began on the now completed Imagine Northwestern campaign, the task of raising $20 million, which was our original goal, appeared daunting. However, the passion of our supporters for Northwestern and its students gave us the confidence to move forward. Campaigns are often times focused on goals and fundraising totals instead of outcomes. So I want to take a moment and share with you how the campaign impacted the University and its students. The support of the Charles Morton Share Trust and the Wisdom Family Foundation allowed us to create the Doctor of Nursing Practice program which will help improve access to health care across Oklahoma, particularly in rural areas of the state. Our first graduates of the program will receive their doctorates in May 2020. Our academic programs and faculty are stronger through the creation of 30 new endowed chairs, 13 endowed lectureships and one new professorship.
Your gifts allowed us to create new learning spaces to begin work in robotics to provide inspiration and training to students for the jobs of tomorrow. We established a Literacy Center and Early Childhood Education Lab in the School of Education to provide students with real-life classroom experiences. We also enhanced learning spaces in the arts and in other areas to provide students with spaces that are conducive to teaching and learning. Our oldest academic building, Fine Arts, has been transformed with the installation of nearly 300 new windows and other improvements made to the interior and exterior of the building. Your support allowed us to improve athletic facilities, successfully preparing us for our move into NCAA Division II. Projects included the Dean Linder Press Box, turf on Ranger Field, the Dunning Performance Center, and strength training facilities for both men’s and women’s sports. Finally, we asked you to support transforming lives, and your support of the campaign led to the creation of 42 new scholarship endowments that will make the difference in students being financially able to attend Northwestern. Ultimately, the Imagine Northwestern campaign inspired you to provide more than $28 million in private funding. What you have accomplished through this campaign is nothing short of amazing. The campaign challenged all of us to rediscover the impact that Northwestern has had on our lives, and to recommit ourselves to sharing this experience with future generations.
Expressions of appreciation seem almost inadequate, but allow me to say thank you for all of those who call themselves “Rangers.” With gratitude,
Janet Cunningham, Ed.D. President Class of 1976

eaving behind the only life, and country, you have ever known is a different type of bravery. It was no longer red, white and green, but red, white and blue. Seven-year-old Karla Lopez was in America. Born in Mexico City, Mexico, Lopez and her family came to the United States in search of a better life. They settled in Santa Ana, Calif., and Lopez began experiencing parts of the American culture. It was not easy. She said coming into a new country was different, especially the people. “I didn’t know there was a different kind of people,” Lopez said. “When I was in Mexico, I thought we were all the same. Then I got here and saw white people who spoke a different language, and I was like ‘where am I?’.” The biggest adjustment she had to make was learning English. Lopez spoke no English when she came to the U.S., and she had to work hard to learn the new language on her own. “Since I was the first generation in my family to go to school in the U.S., I had to teach myself and translate everything from English to
Spanish or Spanish to English because my parents did not know English,” Lopez said. She earned her Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) status when she turned 18. This gave her the opportunity to obtain her driver’s license and help with college expenses. Lopez began playing soccer just before she turned eight. Although she hated the sport at first, her talent took her far and eventually to a place she did not anticipate going. “I hated it because I was the only girl on a boys’ team.” She played throughout high school and on club teams before she attended Cypress Community College and played soccer there for two years. Then Northwestern came into the picture. Northwestern gave her the opportunity to play the sport she loved at one of the highest levels in college athletics — Division II. “I guess you could say Northwestern chose me,” Lopez said. “We just clicked.” She traded the bustling city life for a country town with four stoplights when she traveled to Alva, Okla., to continue her education and soccer career. During her time at Northwestern, Lopez studied criminal justice and minored in Spanish. In addition to being part of the Lady Ranger soccer team, she was also involved with the Spanish club on campus.
“... you could say Northwestern chose me”
Annual Report
Lopez was a crucial offensive and defensive player for the Lady Rangers. In her 2017 season debut, she proved a solid asset on the field. She netted seven goals in the season, which was a team high in the year as well as the most goals scored by a player since 2014. She also earned Second-Team All Great American Conference honors. When Lopez crossed the stage in May of 2019 with her bachelor degree, she became the first member in her family to earn a college degree. “It meant the world to me,” Lopez said. “I’ve always wanted to make my parents and family proud, and be a role model for my siblings so they know that we can do it.” In the future, Lopez hopes to play professional soccer in Mexico. She said pending her citizenship status, she will play professionally in Mexico for Club América and earn her Master’s degree there. After she is through with her soccer career, she would like to work as an interpreter in court. Although Lopez has faced challenges as a Dreamer, she said it has made her stronger. Between the threats of DACA being taken away and deportation, Lopez said she decided not to let that bring her down. “SÍ se puede,” Lopez said. “Yes, we can.”

“H
ey, Hope’s been in a car accident.” This phrase changed a young girl’s life. What she describes as an ‘interesting childhood’ started with Montana McCullough’s sister being born around the time McCullough turned three. A year later, her parents divorced and soon after her mother remarried. McCullough enjoyed a fairly normal life until the one day that completely altered her way of life. May 13, 2006, is a day McCullough plays over and over again in her head. The Saturday before Mother’s Day, an eleven-year-old McCullough decided not to join the family in going to Wichita for a birthday celebration, opting to stay with her grandmother in Kiowa, Kans. Described as a ‘freak accident,’ her mother had to make a very sudden stop which resulted in the vehicle rolling over. Everyone else was fine, but McCullough’s mother, Hope, did not survive.
A family friend arrived at her grandmother’s house and delivered the tragic news. As the family prepared to rush to the hospital, McCullough recalls, “I was sitting in the car with my uncle, and he was trying to assure me that everything was going to be okay. And then we heard my aunt scream. And it was one of those screams that will stick with me until I die. I was in shock and it took me until the next day to realize what had actually happened.” In the following days, McCullough’s biological father and stepmother came from Nebraska to take her and her sister away from the only family they ever knew. The girls then endured a yearlong custody battle across state lines while still grieving for their mother. The custody battle resulted in McCullough and her sister living with their stepfather in Kansas. A few years after the passing of her mother, McCullough’s stepfather remarried and the situation became less ideal for her. A few days before
Annual Report
Christmas break of her senior year of high school, McCullough made the decision to move out due to tension with her stepfather’s wife. “I went to the house and picked up as much as I could. I moved in with my aunt and I finished high school, which is something few people ever thought I was going to be able to accomplish. They thought I would either drop out or never finish because of losing my mom. I proved them wrong.” Originally an Ag Education major, McCullough discovered education was not the career suited for her. At the recommendation of a friend, she took a few mass communication classes and she fell in love with the subject. After switching her major, she graduated with a Mass Communications degree with a minor in Animal Science. “After six, very long years of college, I finally got through it and I graduated in May.” Her motivation to continue her college education and be successful was a tribute to her mother. Also, no one in her family had attended a four-year college. “I wanted to be one of the first in my family to graduate from a four-year university.”
McCullough as a toddler with her mother, Hope.
Together this past May, McCullough and her sister, Taylor, became the first in their family to graduate with bachelor’s degrees. “Trying to push through all the obstacles,” is what McCullogh considered her biggest challenge to get through college. “While in college I was working two, three or four jobs at a time to try and pay bills because I am financially independent. “It has made me a much stronger person. I have become a lot more resilient because of my hardships. I’ve realized that everybody goes through struggles in their lives, and maybe me telling my story could help somebody see that, ‘Hey she’s been through this and made it through college. Why can’t I do the same?’ I have met so many amazing people through the obstacles I have overcome.” “Montana is one of the hardest working students I have ever had the opportunity of teaching. She has faced many obstacles in her life but she always finds ways to overcome. She is tenacious and loyal. She will do anything to help people around her. If you need her, she will show up. No questions asked,” said Allison Zimmerman, an instructor of Mass Communication at Northwestern. In hopes of going full-time into the radio industry, McCullough would like to deejay her own show and eventually broadcast for sporting events. “Don’t give up. Honestly, there were several times when I wanted to give up going to school, but I had a lot of people who said ‘Montana, you can get through this, you know you can. You have this little mental block.’ You have to take it one day at a time.”

T
he absence of a mother was tough in Shalyn (Farrington) Monsees’, ’19, adolescent and teenage years. Bitter divorce challenged their mother-daughter relationship. Most of those years were shared with her dad, Mark, and younger brother, Dace. Growing up in a single-parent home gave its fair share of struggles. “Thankfully, I have a really great dad. Once he sold his boat so I could play summer basketball.” Her dad sacrificed much for her and her brother. Monsees understood early that having little money brought burdens. She realized that if she wanted to get anywhere in life, she had to do well in school. “I had to excel in school. That is something I took very seriously.”
She did do well in school. She scored high on her ACT and was named valedictorian. Monsees enrolled at the University of Central Oklahoma after high school graduation in 2015. She was ready to be a Bronco until she received a call from Calleb Mosburg, Dean of Student Affairs at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and a fellow Beaver, Okla. native. She had grown up next door to Calleb’s parents-inlaw, Diane and Charley Chockley. Charley even taught her how to play baseball. She was not expecting this call from Mosburg. “Congratulations on graduating from Beaver High School. I am aware that we missed an opportunity to recruit you to Northwestern and I want to correct that. I think you should come to Northwestern” said Mosburg. Northwestern was prepared to give her a full-ride scholarship; she had earned it. She thought about it for a couple days; ultimately she realized the offer was too good to pass up. She was coming to Northwestern. “I am extremely proud of Shalyn and her accomplishments thus far,” said Mosburg. “Her love for learning and love for people will truly help change and save lives in the field of nursing. I am truly blessed to have been a part of her journey becoming a Ranger. I am excited to see what is to come in her career as she and her husband Alec — also an outstanding Ranger alumnus — begin their future together.”
Annual Report
Monsees’ time in college was great, though it wasn’t without some low points. In the middle of college, right before starting nursing school, Monsees began to struggle. “I just didn’t really understand what my purpose was. I didn’t know where God was trying to drive me; I didn’t know what I needed to do. I had a lot of self-reflection that summer. I worked that whole summer in Student Services, near Calleb’s office. I had a lot of talks with him. He told me ‘you are where you need to be. It’s just a hard time and you need to get through it.’ I started to feel confident again, I met my future husband, and things just fell into place. “Especially looking back on it, I was so sad all of the time. Now I am the happiest I have ever been.” She learned other lessons, too. Her mother came back into her life her freshman year of high school; she struggled with that at first. “I had a lot of resentment. I had to work through that and build a relationship with my mom. I wanted that relationship. That was a big shift. It was hard on my dad as well.” It all came back to those who were there for her when she needed it. Those who care for her — dad, teachers, coaches, friends’ parents, neighbors — have inspired her to help others today. Monsees now works as an ICU nurse in Enid and she loves it. She is glad she pushed through the struggles and was encouraged to stand firm. Becoming a Ranger was not her original path, but as she puts it “God had other plans.” Those plans have put her right where she needs to be. She plans to apply for Northwestern’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program. Rural healthcare is her passion. “I want to give back to rural communities like Beaver and Alva. They don’t always have the healthcare they need.” She is already giving back with kindness and care. With the right support, great things will be done.

Northwestern’s First Capital
By Caitlin Hofen
O
n September 20, 1897, Northwestern Normal School opened its doors to 58 courageous young men and women and from there, hosts of generations to come. Since then, Northwestern has provided thousands of students the opportunity and inspiration to pursue dreams. It created renowned leaders in education, business, medicine, science and other pursuits. Under the leadership of President Janet Cunningham, Northwestern Oklahoma State University launched the first-ever comprehensive capital campaign in the institution’s history to ensure the future success of the University. The campaign focused on three core objectives: student support, academic programs and faculty support, and campus infrastructure. “We had never done a capital campaign before,” Dr. Cunningham said. “Our Foundation endowment was a fairly good size from bequests and wills, not necessarily reaching out to people but them reaching back to us to help the school. We felt that it was an opportunity to engage with donors who we hadn’t engaged with before.” Imagine Northwestern: One Campaign. Countless Opportunities. came about as the result of the oil boom in northwest Oklahoma and the changes in state education funding. “When all of the state coffers were full because of the oil and gas boom and our state funding did not move up, we knew we would be in trouble when the oil and gas went away,” said Skeeter Bird, CEO of the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association. “We saw many local citizens who had more money than they had ever seen in their lives; we didn’t want that to go to the Federal government. We wanted to make an effort to retain that windfall locally.” Fully-endowed scholarships were the top priorities when it came to developing the Capital Campaign. As a result, the goal of 70 percent of students receiving financial aid was surpassed with 82.7 percent of students receiving some type of financial aid. Next, an increase in the number of endowed

chairs, professorships and lectureships was vital in providing aid to the academic programs and to faculty support. “Generally, we found a need within the university and matched that with a donor who had a passion for that area,” Bird said. Academic infrastructure improvements, as a result of campaign funding, include the establishment of the R. Deane and Esther M. Wymer Nursing Lab; the William R. and Billie Dean Buckles Computer Science Robotics Design and Build Labs; the Darrell and Grace Wessels Early Childhood Education Classroom Laboratory; and the Darrell and Grace Wessels Literacy Center. The Charles Morton Share Trust and the Wisdom Family Foundation provided the donations to establish the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, Northwestern’s first doctoral-level program. In March 2017, Northwestern named the Division of Nursing and its Doctoral Program in Rural Nursing Practice in honor of these two family foundations. Both entities provided leadership gifts that created 20 endowed faculty chair positions used

Campaign Makes Impact to support faculty positions and operational needs in nursing. “As an academic program, I think the DNP program will serve not only the institution, but this part of the state for many, many years into the future,” Dr. Cunningham said. The Dean Linder Press Box headlines improvements to athletic facilities, along with the artificial turf at Ranger Field, construction of the Dunning Performance Center, and improvements at the Don Campbell Rodeo Complex. Faced with aging infrastructure of buildings on campus, the final goal of Imagine was to preserve the beloved facilities while recreating a better campus environment. Renovation of Herod Hall Auditorium, the University Mall and the Fine Arts building were the foremost projects outlined in the strategic plan. Built in 1907, the Fine Arts building is the oldest building on campus at 112 years old. Originally the University’s Science Hall, the facility today houses student services, faculty offices and rehearsal space for the Fine Arts programs. Brick tuck-pointing was completed and all 324 windows were replaced in the summer of 2019 to protect the facility’s offices from elements and to improve energy efficiency. Restroom renovation is part of this project, as well. While this project is a critical component to sustaining the building’s integrity, its greater impact is preserving a piece of Northwestern history. “A longtime donor provided the funds for the Fine Arts building, just wanting to better the community,” said Dr. Cunningham. The remaining projects will continue as fundraising goals. “When we started planning the Mall Project, we made a 3-D video,” Bird said. “When we reviewed a draft of the video, we realized we had some elements that we really didn’t like. They had been in the plan the whole time; but until we actually saw it, we didn’t see what we really wanted. Now that we have revised our plan, we’re waiting on cost figures from
the architect so we can package it for people to get involved. “For Herod Hall, we are still looking for the right person to step up and be a lead donor. This is a huge project for our community and it is really important. There are a limited number of people in our database who can be a lead donor for a project of this magnitude.” Community involvement played a key role in the success of the capital campaign. Beverly, ’67, and Warren Little were members of the steering committee for Imagine. “We felt honored to be chosen to help out,” said Beverly. “We enjoyed going out and talking to other community members and helping many realize just how special this institution is. We have deep family ties here and wanted to help people get involved to realize the potential we see in bettering Northwestern.” “Our main role was to find people who thought about Northwestern the same way we did, and were willing to contribute,” said Warren. “People of the community need to realize the quality here at Northwestern. Leadership, personnel, professors and even students are above average in this part of the country. That is what we expect and that is what we receive.” Surpassing the $28 million goal of the capital campaign shows the hard work and determination put forth by many parts of the machine that is Northwestern Oklahoma State University and its community. “Just as when Northwestern was formed,” said Bird, “there were so many people working together to make this first comprehensive capital campaign a huge success. I hope that everyone, like those before us, feels honored to a part of this endeavor.”
