Northwest Florida State College
Why the Raiders?
A proud name and tradition, Northwest Florida State College is honored to use the name “Raiders” to pay tribute to the heroes of the past who have shaped our future today.
In the College’s first year of operation, in 1964, then Okaloosa-Walton Junior College set about to choose a school mascot. It was decided that the College use the name “Raiders” in honor of the heroic airmen who trained at Eglin Air Force Base for their famous World War II raid on Tokyo.
In dedication to keeping the legacy of the Doolittle Raiders alive, the College is honored to feature various Raider memorabilia throughout the campus, including a mini museum at the entrance of Raider Arena; a painting bearing the signatures of surviving crewman from each of the 16 participating aircrafts, including Jimmy Doolittle himself; and an autographed edition of Doolittle’s autobiography.

Thomas Ryan Theater Student
“I was losing the security of the military, I was losing that paycheck, I was losing that support, and I was going to be on my own,” Thomas Ryan said as he reflected on his transition from the military. “It suddenly hit me, and it was terrifying.”
Thomas recalled giving his retirement speech at Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs after almost 21 years of service in the United States Air Force. As he looked out at all of the airmen whom he had supervised, Thomas remembers feeling a wave of doubt like he was making a mistake by getting out. He explained that it took him a long time to come to terms with his retirement and realize that it was all for the better.
Thomas spent most of his career in the Air Force as a Security Forces officer. During his service, he deployed to Bosnia and Iraq. He was also approached by the Office of Special Investigations to do undercover drug work and recalls his year in OSI being extremely successful.
After retirement, Thomas said it was difficult to find employment and attributes the difficulties he faced to the negative stigma surrounding veterans and post-traumatic stress disorder.
“It became apparent to me that one of the reasons why I wasn’t getting called back was because I put my combat deployments on my resume,” he said. “I changed my resume, and that is when I got my only callback. The only thing I can think of is that people are just scared that veterans will flip a cap one day and go crazy. It was strange to me and sad too. I remember wondering if there were other veterans out there going through the same thing I was.”
Although the first three years after retirement were difficult for Thomas, he later realized that his experiences and military background would lead him to his passion and to Northwest Florida State College.
“I was talking to one of my closest friends trying to figure out what I was going to do, and he said, ‘why don’t you become an actor?’” Thomas recalled. “I was like, ‘that’s a stupid idea. Why would I want to do that?’ and he explained, ‘well, you did a year’s worth of undercover work. You convinced all of these people that you were somebody else. It was all improv, and you were extremely successful at it. Why wouldn’t you want to be an actor?’”
His friend’s idea led Thomas to realize that he had potential in the film industry. After securing some roles in background, body doubles, and extras, Thomas decided that he needed formal training if he wanted to make it to the big leagues.
Thomas was introduced to NWFSC by his exwife, who happened to be an alumna of the college.
“I looked at a couple of schools that were relatively close, but they were strictly theater with no specialization in acting,” he explained. “It just worked out that Northwest offered everything that I needed, and I was literally down the road from it. So, it was a win-win.”
Now that he has started to pursue his degree at NWFSC, Thomas said he appreciates his instructors, who have been teaching him everything that he needs to know about the industry, and the Veterans Success Center that has helped him every step of the way.
“I can go in and say, ‘hey, this is what I want to do,’ and they can just lay it all out for me,” he said. “They showed me what I needed to do and where I needed to be to get my degree in theater appreciation. I would have been lost without them.”
The theater wing was completed in December of 1996 and includes the Mainstage Theater, Sprint Theater, Frances Smith Herron Dance Studio, and the Seven Dancers sculpture. The wing hosts Broadway touring shows, visiting artists, dance and opera companies, the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, and productions held by the College’s students. At Mattie Kelly Arts Center, students get the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals on traveling broadway tours.

Natalia Beaumont Basketball Player
Growing up in Australia, Natalia Beaumont always knew that basketball would be a part of her future.
What she didn’t foresee was how Northwest Florida State College would guide her down an additional path and help her rediscover her interests when she had to take a break from the sport she loves.
Natalia left Australia three years ago and moved to the United States to pursue the college route. She began her journey at a junior college in Melbourne, FL, then transferred to NWFSC, where she pursued an Associate in Arts and became a Raider athlete with the women’s basketball team.
Although she had to take a break from the sport during the 2021-2022 season, Natalia is grateful for the opportunity to have studied at NWFSC and contributes her academic success to the support system and resources she found at the College.
“The Raider family has been a huge support for me,” she said. “I didn’t get to play this season due to tearing my ACL, but the amount of love that the Raider community showed me was an unreal experience.”
Natalia explained that being away from the court forced her to learn how to be more of a student than an athlete, and recalled how she found herself living in the library with her math tutors who felt like her best friends.
Natalia graduated with her Associate in Arts in May of 2022 alongside her teammates and fellow international student-athletes. She remembers commencement being a great experience and is proud to cross the stage as a first-generation college graduate.
Natalia will be attending the University of Alaska Anchorage this summer, where she will continue to play basketball while also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nutrition.
“I’m that athlete who just sees my whole future with a basketball in my hand,” she said. “I still plan on playing basketball, but being here at Northwest, I’ve seen that the possibilities are endless. I never saw myself going to Alaska Anchorage, and I never thought I would study dietetics and nutrition, but doing that, I’ve been able to see a world so much bigger than just a pair of basketball shoes and a basketball in my hand. I can be a coach. I can help someone maintain a good diet. The possibilities are endless. And I haven’t been able to have that perspective in my life before.”
Natalia thanks her support system at the College for everything they have done for her. She admits that it wasn’t an easy journey, but the coaches, team, faculty, and staff at NWFSC have positively impacted her life during a time of uncertainty and doubt.

“This scholarship has impacted me by giving me the opportunity to further my education beyond a basic K-12 learning environment. It gives me the opportunity to become the first person in my family to have a college education. I was raised by a single mother who worked dead-end jobs to support me and my siblings. In a way, she showed me everything I did not want to do with my own life, which is one that lacks ambition. I want to pursue a degree so that I will have the opportunities that she did not. I want to make my mother proud by furthering my education. I don’t just want a job, I want a CAREER. And thanks to my donor, I’m now one step closer. Thank you!”
