think we can all agree that 2020 has been a weird, weird year. With COVID-19 turning our lives upside down and cancelling many of the things we would normally do during the summer, more people are turning to the golf course as a respite. Not only has that resulted in more rounds played by casual golfers, it means more players are taking the time to play in state golf association tournaments hosted by groups like Washington Golf, the Oregon Golf Association, and others. I fell into that category, trying my hand again at qualifying for events like the Oregon Amateur and Washington Amateur championships. Needless to say, I still have work to do. Many of the players I spoke with during those qualifying tournaments

(observing proper social distancing, of course) said this was the first time they’d played in a state event. That was especially true for some of the events with higher handicap ceilings. The reason, they said, was that more time to play and practice gave them more confidence to step outside their comfort zones. I approve! It’s a little late for 2020, but it’s never too early to think about dipping your toe in the competitive waters. Nearly all the state golf associations host Winter series events, typically one-day affairs that are laid back but give players a taste of the bigger events. Once you play in a few, you’ll be ready to take on new challenges when the 2021 season rolls around.

In golf, we like to have control, or at least the feeling of control. We try to control our setup, tempo, our emotions, and unfortunately, we try hard to control the results.

Buffalo Peak For 20 years, Buffalo Peak Golf Course has kept the spirit of the Old West and the spirit of the game alive and well in Eastern Oregon.

Today we are going to talk about a simple idea that can help you control the clubface which in turn should help you hit straighter golf shots. Before we get to our idea, we must first understand that to hit mostly straight shots we need to have an address position that is square to the target. In the pictures below you will see an open, closed, and square setup.

08.

As you take the club back to a 9 o’clock or three-quarter position, the squirt gun should be pointing straight behind you. Then as you move through the golf ball when you reach the 3 o’clock or three-quarter finish position your “squirt gun” should be pointing at your target. If you can aim your trail hand like a squirt gun as shown in the pictures below you will hit straighter golf shots.

Dynamic Golfers If you don’t love stretching, it’s tough to get started. A new program is making it easy to be more flexible with one routine each day.

BUFFALO PEAK

FOR 20 YEARS, BUFFALO PEAK HAS KEPT THE SPIRIT OF THE OLD WEST AND THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME OF GOLF ALIVE AND WELL IN UNION, OREGON

nterstate freeways are an excellent way to get from one place to another on the West Coast. Sometimes, though, the convenience those freeways offer can take you around some pretty great places. That couldn’t be more true than for golfers flying along Interstate 84 in Eastern Oregon. In the blink of an eye, I-84 takes you past La Grande and Baker City, away from the charming town of Union and its hidden gem of a golf course: Buffalo Peak.

Leaving the interstate and heading east takes you off the beaten path and through a little slice of Americana. The City of Union is an agricultural community of just over 2,000 people situated on the banks of Catherine Creek. The main route through town presents visitors with a mix

04

of idyllic country homes and brick faced shops, hotels, and cafes. Surrounding the entire area are rolling hills and wheat fields, with the beauty of the Wallowa Mountains looming in the distance. Buffalo Peak Golf Course, celebrating its 20-year Anniversary, sits just outside of town, with holes running up and down the hills around a series of ponds and streams. From the deck on the back of the proshop, the course doesn’t look particularly intimidating, but once on the first tee, it’s easy to see that both fairways and greens are surrounded by deep fescue that’s difficult to find balls in. In other words, keep that ball in the middle.

www.nwgolfadventures.com

The community has stepped behind the course. We want more community involvement, especially the young kids. the fairway and O.B. stakes along the entire right side of the hole. A long, narrow green completes what is one of the most difficult holes on the course. “There are so many shots out there that you don’t have to hit that often,” added Londin. “There are a lot of different looks that you won’t find at any other course. It’s a true inland links golf course.” While the golf at Buffalo Peak is amazing, it’s about what the facility wants to offer the community in the future that’s really exciting.

“The fairways are narrow,” said Buffalo Peak’s head professional Dana Londin. “In fact, the course has had to be softened up since its opening because it was just so difficult to play. Now, it’s a very enjoyable, yet challenging course.” With an impressive variety to each hole at Buffalo Peak, it’s difficult to to pick a signature hole. One of the most interesting holes, though, is the par 4 14th. Coming off a great birdie opportunity on 13, the 14th hole is anything but easy. A lake cuts across the hole just in front of the forward tees and then again roughly 215 yards from the tee. A tee shot of 225-yards is needed to clear the hazard, otherwise a layup is recommended. Those clearing the water, however, will be met with bunkers on either side of

“We’re the only public golf course between Pendleton and Ontario and we plan to build on that,” said Londin. “In the near future, we’ll have more food and beverage options and a proshop that people will feel comfortable knowing they’ll find what they need. Local players will also be excited as we continue to grow our Men’s, Women’s, and Juniors programs.” Buffalo Peak is only a 15-minute drive off the freeway, making it easy to get off, play a round, and then continue traveling. The City of Union, however, is inviting enough to stay for the night and take another crack at the course before moving on. The historic Union Hotel is a welcome change from the cookie cutter corporate hotels that most golf trips involve. A massive brick building in the center of town, the Union Hotel has 15 themed rooms that speak to the history of the area. The hotel also offers a relaxing parlour that all guests have access to. Even guests traveling with an RV are welcome in one of the Union Hotel’s eight full-hookup RV sites along the river. A little further down the road, the Hot Lake Resort offers rooms and RV parking. If you’re considering a trip to Buffalo Peak, definitely plan ahead and look at the weather, it can get cold in the winter! The prevailing winds in the Spring, Summer, and Fall all offer different looks at the course.

ech companies continue to invote and respond to the demands of golfers around the world. Even if you haven’t liked a particular product before, new features and styles may change your mind!

ARCCOS CADDIE LINK $99.99

WHOOP WRISTBAND & SERVICE $39.99

TECTECTEC! ULT-G GPS Watch $119.99

Arguably golf’s most powerful gameimprovement tool, it’s now even more convenient.

After grabbing headlines in June when PGA TOUR pro Nick Watney used the WHOOP band to spot his COVID-19 symptoms before testing positive, WHOOP has become the buzziest health-monitoring device in sports.

Golfers enjoy precise yardages, and ULT-G offers it at the flick of a wrist.

The big advancement? Ditching your cell phone. Past Arccos customers know that keeping a cell phone handy for shot-tracking was always part of the product. But the company’s newest model, Link, features an ultra-powerful, tiny accessory that clips onto a belt or skirt and tracks all the data previously recorded by smartphones. Add this to Arccos’ state-of-the-art stat-tracking and AI-powered advice, and you get a cutting-edge product for golfers looking to take their games up a notch.

In addition to measuring respiratory activity during sleep, which is how Watney was alerted, the lightweight strap tracks and analyzes biometric data such as heart rate variability, resting heart rate and more. WHOOP then prescribes recommendations for how much sleep you need, whether your body had recovered properly and how hard you should push during your next training session. Get to know your body with WHOOP!

KILLED IN CRASH

Sean Fredrickson worked at Tualatin Country Club, near Portland, Oregon, for 14 years before moving to Oswego Lake Country Club. His wife said he and their three children were killed when their plane collided with another over a lake in Northern Idaho.

I

t doesn’t happen everyday, but sometimes a breaking story hits really close to home. That was the case earlier this summer when news broke that Sean Fredrickson, the head professional at Oswego Lake Country Club - and president of the Pacific Northwest Section PGA - was killed in a plane crash. The accident, at Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho, also claimed the lives of his three children.. “The loss of Sean Fredrickson and his children Hayden, Sofie and Quinn is devastating,” Oswego Lake general manager Bryan Fisher said in a statement. “Sean was an exceptional golf professional who was awarded the PGA Professional of the Year honor in 2019 by the Pacific Northwest Section PGA. Oswego Lake Country Club was honored to have him as a member of our family. His positive spirit and joy for the game of golf was contagious. But more importantly, Sean was a tremendous husband, father and friend. Our love and heartfelt sympathy goes to his wife, April, his family and friends during this time of loss.”

Fredrickson, pictured with children Sofia, Quinn, and Hayden (l-r) were among eight people killed when two planes collided over Lake Coeur d’Alene.

In all, eight people were killed when two planes collided over the lake. Prior to working at Oswego Lake Country Club, Fredrickson spent 14 years at Tualatin Country Club. In the months and years to come, Fisher plans to work with the country club to honor Fredrickson. He said he would consider a golf tournament named after him, or name recently built facilities after him, too.

As a club professional, Fredrickson worked hard to mentor young golfers looking to play competitively.

08

www.nwgolfadventures.com

So much of what Sean was about was about mentoring. He was really big on trying to build that.

“So much of what Sean was about was about mentoring,” Fisher said. “He was really big on trying to build that.” “A rising star in the PGA, Sean led the Section through an unprecedented time, first taking the reins a year early as president and then leading us wisely through this pandemic,” the Pacific Northwest PGA Section said in a statement. “We are all better because of Sean’s leadership over the past 12 years.” Response to Fredrickson’s death is a reminder of the role golf professionals play in the lives of the community they work in. Members of Fredrickson’s former and current clubs, as well as playing professionals around the region, have posted tributes to someone they feel did an amazing job for golfers and community members.

Stretch your body, Stretch your game Making the effort to stretch before and after a round is a habit that’s worth the time to develop.

M

ost amateur players struggle to find time to play golf, let alone practice. Many players, when they do get a tee time, are hustling from the parking lot to the first tee with very little warm up time. That’s something of a recipe for disaster.

Stretching is the best way to ensure your muscles stay flexible, strong and healthy. The golf swing is not a natural movement, and requires proper alignment of muscles and joints to stay on a correct plane of motion. Without stretching, muscles can become shortened and tight over time and with each swing of the club. Once muscles are no longer in proper alignment, you are at risk of herniated disks, back strain, shoulder injuries, golfer’s elbow, and knee injury. Incorporating a regular stretching routine is the best way to ensure muscle balance and protect the body from injury. At its core, Dynamic Golfers is a stretching and mobility program. Subscribers have access to an ongoing series of video routines, laid out in a monthly format. Complete one routine per day and the program will continue to build and offer new routines that improve flexibility. Each routine is roughly 15 minutes and is time well spent. Coupled with the stretching and mobility program is a strength training program. The three weekly routines focus on muscle balance that works on stability and strengthening some of the supporting muscles that may be a weak link in the golf swing. These routines require minimal equipment and take less than 30 minutes to complete. Dynamic Golfers responded to requests from subscribers and developed several short warm up routines for players to take to the course. The warm up routines are designed to properly warm up a golfers spine, legs, and arms. The Dynamic Golfers program launched in 2019 in Kelowna, British Columbia by physical therapists who saw more and more patients suffering from golf injuries. They developed their program with the goal of helping golfers improve consistency, boost their club head, and play pain free. New users can try the program free for seven days. It’s available for download www.dynamicgolfers.com.
