his issue was originally scheduled to be released on Friday of The Masters, when the world was focused on one of golf’s greatest stages. After watching the first round on Thursday and the start of the second round, it was easy to see that Tiger Woods had captured the imagination of golfers. I was one of those held captive by the hope that I would get another glimpse of the greatness Tiger previously displayed on a regular basis. I wanted my son, an up-andcoming high school golfer, to see success from the player that inspired me to play more golf. Tiger’s victory brought memories of watching Jack Nicklaus win his final Masters championship. I was young, but knew what that victory meant to fans. To see Nicklaus turn back the clock and win was exciting, but it was

better to watch my dad’s reaction to the win. The greatest golfer of his generation was able to give fans one more (unexpected) taste of victory. This was an important win for those of us who grew up watching Tiger dominate, and for our children who have seen plenty of highlights but never had the opportunity to watch his greatness live. Personally, it was inspiring to see Tiger win at a high level because it was a reminder that golf is something you can be successful at for a long time. Our club - finally - has some young players stepping up to challenge in tournaments. Watching them swing fearlessly off every tee is great, but they’re tough to beat. With the right amount of practice and work, Tiger proved that it’s more than possible to compete with the younger generation.

Meridian Valley preps for WA Open The Washington Open Invitational (May 20-22) has been contested since 1922 with this year being the thirteenth edition at Meridian Valley Country Club and the 93rd playing in the history of the championship.

LPGA Founder mourned Marilynn Smith, one of the 13 founders of the LPGA, died in early April, four days before her 90th birthday. During her LPGA career, Smith managed to collect 21 titles including two major championships.

Golf grows in 2018 The National Golf Foundation released their 2019 report showing that, in the United States, an estimated 24.2 million people over the age of six played golf at a course in 2018. That’s a slight increase from 2017.

OGIO Innovation

Golfers are ‘all or nothing’ creatures. While hitting a full shot from the tee, their confidence and commitment are high because they can make a good, full move on the ball with minimal guess work. The end result may vary, but the player has a plan and understanding of what should happen.

Go for the Green CBD products can help with aches, pains, and overall wellness. Products derived from hemp provide a variety of benefits without giving users a high.

As they get closer to the hole, more variables come into play. What type of lie will I get? Where is the pin? How far do I have to hit this shot? Am I between clubs? All of these factors can give the player doubt.

09.

The company introduced two new high-end bags: the Shadow Fuse 304 and Alpha Convoy 514. Golfers get great new features in stand and cart bags.

12.

Once doubt creeps in, players experience a lack of commitment, move away from sound technique, and start to improvise. This leads to more poor shots and fewer positive results. I often see this when players encounter wedge shots that are in the 40 to 60 yard range.

The Great 48 Whether you’re on a trip with your spouse or a weekend with friends, you’ll probably want more than just two days in this gloriously sunny city.

is where the backswing and through swing match, leading to inconsistency. Proper Technique: Address & ball position: Assume a slightly narrow stance. The ball should be placed in the middle of your stance, slightly favoring your left side (right hand players). Swing: This motion is mostly trunk and upper body. Your lower half will remain fairly quiet. The big key here is to match the swing length from back to through swing. Accelerate into the downswing; speed will help us rotate through to a proper finish. Strike: The ground is our friend. If we assume a proper setup, our goal is to hit the ground at the bottom of the swing. This will eliminate any “scooping” motion, and will allow us to use the club head properly.

Common Mistakes:

Heathen Brewing The Vancouver, Washington brewery introduced a delicious new brew in Sudden Death Imperial IPA. The new beer was inspired, in part, by editor Kris Fay.

Improper ball position: In an effort to make contact, players will play the ball too far back in their stance. This leads to a steeper angle of attack, lack of distance control, and inconsistent contact.

16.

Lack of trunk rotation: Many players stop the golf swing at contact. This keeps our hands and body from finishing the motion.

Keep in touch .

“Helping the Ball”: This is when the player tries to lift the ball into the air. This motion lacks consistency and results in many chunked shots.

GOING for the GREEN

NO MORE BAD DAYS

CBD products are now helping golfers on and off the course Regardless of your ability with a golf club in your hand, a round of golf can be incredibly taxing. 18 holes often resembles an emotional roller coaster, followed by post-round aches and pains in joints and muscles that only get used during the golf swing. More and more players are turning to the science behind CBD as a way to help on and off the golf course. Yes, ads are everywhere for CBD Oil and the products made from it. You'll see them online and on the streets with more businesses trying to capitalize on this all-natural cure all. When it comes to Hemp-based CBD (nonpsychotropic), products include creams, tinctures, edibles, vape cartridges, and even lip-balm. Not all products are equal, though. SWING (www.swingbalm.com), new CBD products designed with golfers in mind, went to great lengths to offer CBD oils that are not only free of THC, but are also organically grown and extracted without the use of harsh chemicals that could negate the product's healing potential. All the products are aimed at improving performance on the course and aide recovery off it. CBD is great for treating a variety of problems. The creams and balms are great for quickly relieving pain, something you can use before, during, or after a round of golf. Tinctures and edibles can help reduce anxiety, chronic pain, and insomnia, promoting an overall sense of well being when used on a regular basis. Athletes are using CBD to assist with muscle recovery, pain management, and to strengthen their immune systems. It also helps to prevent and treat injuries. The elephant in the room is whether or not it's legal. The answer is easy: YES! 04

LEGALIZED HEMP 40 STATES HAVE LEGALIZED THE GROWING OF INDUSTRIAL HEMP. HOWEVER, IT IS LEGAL IN ALL 50 STATES TO PURCHASE AND CONSUME HEMP-BASED CBD PRODUCTS (NON-THC).

www.nwgolfadventures.com

All of the products sold by SWING use CBD sourced from USA-grown industrial hemp that is compliant with the State Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Farm Bill. Third Party testing ensures the quality, purity, and potency of all CBD oils and products. Their products will not get you high or cause a problem with drug tests. Pain relief is where I got started with CBD. A wicked case of golfer's elbow kept me off the course for several weeks and I was ready to try ANYTHING to get back out there. With that in mind, I began using a generic CBD balm that has been successful in relieving pain and helping my elbow feel great after golf. Those positive results led me to try a couple of oral products that have eliminated at least some of the stress and anxiety that come with playing with a round of golf. Is CBD for everyone? Of course not. Like any supplement, effects can vary from user to user. It's highly recommended that you start with a low dosage or consult your doctor before using CBD products. What you'll likely find, as so many people have, is that CBD can help keep you feeling your best, day after day and round after round.

Gelliflex Abacus offers relief The new therapy device is customizable and offers relief from golf and tennis elbow

T

his year’s PGA Merchandise Show was full of new golf gear, with plenty of health and wellness products. The Gelliflex Abacus was designed for golfers to help battle common aches and pains. “It’s hard to play your best when your wrists, forearms and elbows aren’t at theirs,” said Craig Olschansky, inventor of the Gelliflex Abacus. “The Abacus helps relieve pain to get golfers back on the course.” As an avid golfer, Olschansky came up with the idea after suffering a variety of aches and pains and not finding a massage-therapy device to address all his needs. The Abacus is ideal for golfers both before

and after play. It incorporates interchangeable, non-latex, rubbery feeling Gelliprene balls of different firmnesses (soft, medium and firm), that you can position on the Abacus frame in thousands of restorative combinations allowing you to adapt it for your own particular hand, wrist and forearm care. The patent-pending design is the only product that combines the features of a squeeze ball with forearm compression in one device and in a way that allows you to move fluidly from your hand to wrist to forearm to elbow and viceversa — much like a therapist would provide. It’s portable, simple and versatile. For more information, visit www.gelliflex.com/ collections/golf.

Baseball Spring Training The beginning of March may not be the easiest time of year to visit Scottsdale, but Spring Training is a lot of fun. On top of having the chance to see 15 baseball teams from around the country, there’s a great chance you’ll run into a player or two in town. Game tickets aren’t as cheap as they used to be, but the Cactus League parks spread throughout the Phoenix area are a good way to spend time away from the golf course.

CHRIS SMEAL

Future Champions Golf

When Chris Smeal founded the Future Champions Golf Academy and Tour in 2003, he did so with the goal of inspiring a generation of young golfers to play better and prepare themselves for college golf. Since then, hundreds of players from 30 different countries have participated in lessons and competitions up and down the West Coast and around the world.

Junior Golf SPOTLIGHT

“We’ve made a lot of changes over the years and feel that the formula we have is a pretty good one,” said Smeal, a PGA Professional. “We conducted 113 tournaments in 2018 and I expected that we’ll have at least that number this year.” Future Champions Golf (FCG) offers something for junior golfers of all abilities. Many of the students use the program to prep for potential college careers, something Smeal said they’ve been successful at. “We graduate a lot of Division 1 and 2 golfers. The kids work hard and we use our relationships with college coaches to get results in front of them.” Smeal added that those college relationships are spread out across the country, with nearly 200 coaches attending an FCG event in 2018. What makes FCG so successful? Smeal said it’s all about finding out what the kids like about golf. “When I’m teaching, I try to connect with all of them so they have a good time. A lot of the time they want to be with other kids, so it’s about trying to link them up with one another so they can play and practice together.” FCG tournaments are currently held in California, Nevada, Texas, Arizona, Utah, and Mexico. Looking ahead, Smeal said he hopes to find ways to bring FCG events to players in Washington and Oregon. In golf, though, growth can be an uphill battle. “Kids get discouraged when they’re not good at something, and golf is really tough. They may not see results for a couple of years once they get started; that’s a big challenge for the golf industry moving forward.” The full FCG schedule is available online at http://www. futurechampionsgolf.com.

spend a day at the brewery to get hands-on with the process. The final product - Heathen Sudden Death Imperial IPA - is a wonderfully smooth beer that combines the unique properties of three hop varieties and a local barley sourced from Redmond, Oregon. The alcohol by volume is high at 7.1 percent, but it’s not as bitter as many of the beers in its weight class.

Heathen Brewing, located in Vancouver, Washington, has taken things a step further by allowing customers to brew a large batch of their favorite beer. Each year, the brewery holds a competition for their loyalty club members with the winner receiving the opportunity to brew the beer of their choice.

For the Sudden Death recipe we took sort of a hybrid approach between a New England IPA and the classic Northwest IPA we see in our region,” said Head Brewer Nate Froehlich. “It was made with locally sourced barley (Pilsner) and wheat (50% raw and 50% malted white wheat) from Mecca Grade Estate Malt in Madras, Oregon and hops (Mosaic, Citra, Centennial) from the Yakima Valley region.”

The 2018 contest ended in a tie, leaving the co-champions to collaborate on a beer and

eathen Brewing started, literally, in Sunny Parsons’ backyard. All of the beers are brewed ten barrels at a time in a state-of-the-art facility that’s open to the public. Heathen’s Feral Public House, located in downtown Vancouver, has become one of the most popular spots in town for a bite to eat and a cold beer.

Since its inception, Heathen has branched out from the core beers that made it so popular. Now, customers can try a variety of sour beers, experimental brews, collaborations with other Pacific Northwest breweries, wines made by Heathen Estates, and a select number of special cocktails. Heathen recently converted its Feral Public House to a casual dining establishment, making it easier for customers to quickly get a beer or find a seat and order food. We highly recommend a trip there for brunch!
