Jewish Academy (pjaproud.org) provides a rich ThePortland PJA Perspective academic and cultural learning experience for kids from early childhood through 8th grade. We’ve invited budding writers from the middle school Humanities classes and writing exploratory to join our team for a series that gives you a glimpse into thoughts and life - from their perspective.

Alliteration Inspiration by Sadie Dark dreadful nights Walking past without a word Canceling plans without thought The prediction of presidential drama pugnacious Hundreds of humans stuck in full hospitals Greed from great things that gave out Mounds of masks from massive mistakes Harmful hate But then we remember What we will learn from this hassle We will recover from what mattered The judgment will STOP We will be left with art, not tags

Lightning will continue to strike But we will learn to hide when we hear the thunder And only the bravest will stay out in the wild And the bravest will survive The bravest will inspire the ones who bury themself when they hear the thunder They will show everyone that it is okay They will share their discoveries and their stories They will bond with the bland Everything will be okay

Sadie is a current sixth grader at the Portland Jewish Academy. In addition to writing, she enjoys playing piano, dancing, skiing, and eating! She likes helping others through service projects and random acts of kindness. She also loves traveling!

This Wounded World by Maya This wounded world This wounded world This wounded world, where the sun sets every night in glowing beams of warm light. This wounded world, where the star-struck moon sings children to sleep. This wounded world, where the sun-baked sand burns and the chilled salted water cools. This wounded world, where tall buildings reach for the heavens and scream for freedom. This wounded world, where stretching fields of grass dance in the wind. This wounded world, where wavy water washes over life for miles. This wounded world, where powder-tipped mountains emerge through the clouds. This wounded world, where enchanted woods spike like thorns out of the ground. This wounded world, where rivers run, racing over pebbles and plants. This wounded world, where the skies are painted delicately every morning and every night. This wounded world, where even the strongest lightning and the heaviest rain sparkle and shine. This wounded world, where the coldest and blankest of things gracefully sparkle in white. This wounded world This wounded world This wounded world, where beneath the surface is a burning, boiling heat -- painful, cruel, and unforgiving.

Maya is a current seventh grader at the Portland Jewish Academy. In addition to writing, she enjoys reading and art.

BITS & BYTES As many students are returning to some level of in-person school this month, we’ve been thinking of strategies to help ease the ensuing mix of excitement and trepidation. In addition to having age appropriate discussions, here are a few other ideas:

Buddha Board Buddha Board, a blank canvas that uses water as the “ink,” was founded on the Zen idea of living in the moment. As the water evaporates, the board slowly returns to its blank state; ready for another temporary masterpiece. The original Buddha Board has been around for over 20 years, but they’ve since added a mini board and also an Enso. The Enso comes with a refillable water pen, while the others have a paintbrush and an area for holding water in the base. $14.95-$34.95, buddhaboard.com

The Upside Delivered Carefully curated for children aged 5-10, this is a subscription box that focuses on helping kids manage their feelings and create a sense of calm. The Begin Box, which can be purchased on its own without a subscription, contains a variety of products that focus on various relaxation techniques. From a stress ball and Thinking Putty to bubbles and flow rings, even the bigger kids and adults found something of interest here. $29.99+, upsidedelivered.com

Once Upon a Pancake These hands-on books are full of unfinished stories for children of all ages. Each book (ages 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12) contains 20 stories with writing prompts that kids and parents can write and draw together. Young kids can write about superheroes, princesses and trucks, while older kids can write about saving the galaxy, sports and more. This is a great screen-free option for kids to get creative and enhance their reading and writing skills while also connecting with others. $12.95, onceuponapancake.com 24 | NW Kids Magazine
