Season’s Greetings! It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the end of 2014. It seems like just a few days ago that the school year ended, yet here we are. Don’t get us wrong, we love the holidays and all that they bring, but with another new year around the corner, time is flying a little too quickly, and our kids don’t stop growing! All the more reason to settle in for a long winter’s snuggle. This month we feature the best of the season. During the month of December there is no shortage of ways to spend time with the family. You can get dressed up and head out on the town to enjoy all of what Portland has to offer. Be sure to check out our theater round up on page 8 and while you’re at it, head on over to page 22 for a few ideas on where to try some of the city’s finest desserts. And if you’re at a loss for what to get the folks on your holiday list this year, we have some recommendations for what to make on your own or where to shop for handmade goods. And so with every year, we thank you, our readers and sponsors, for your support! Winter for kids means sweaters, hot chocolate, possibly snow, and no school! But with the kiddos on break and the weather outside being, well ... frightful, it can be hard to find fun activities inside. Never fear, theater is here! There are a number of wonderful, kid-friendly plays and musicals all around town this December, including holiday favorites like “The Nutcracker” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” A CHRISTMAS CAROL Dickens’ classic ghost story returns to Portland Playhouse in an adaptation filled with music and charm. Frogz is a lively, wonderful, and crazy experience for children and adults. and reflect the kind of generosity of spirit that we all cherish this time of year.
My kids use all of my tape–all of it. I never know when it’s happening, but when they emerge from their secret corners of the house to gift me their creations (some made entirely of tape and some just encapsulated in it), I can’t help but recognize the hopeful and loving looks on their faces. These tokens represent their time, heart and soul, and all they want to do is give them to someone they love. It doesn’t really matter what I’ll do with my wad of pipe cleaners, pony beads, wet glue and masking tape because these scenarios are a prime example of the age-old sentiment that we all tout: it’s the thought that counts. What better time of year to harness your kids’ desires to gift on their very own or create in sheer acts of love than the holidays?
Do-it-yourself
Now, I know that coordinating extra projects and shopping can be daunting with all of the time that we’ll already spend handling regular responsibilities, shopping, meal planning, cleaning for parties or relatives, or preparing for a trip over the river and through the woods. But with a little planning, kid giving can let them express themselves and their affections, thrill dear ones, keep them busy,
There are so many tutorials for seasonal projects on the internet. My personal favorite website for collecting ideas is Pinterest; love it or hate it, there is a lot to choose from in the way of crafts. Only you can gauge what is suitable for your child’s abilities (or what you’re largely willing to do on their behalf ), but stay urgent care free by exercising caution when children work with cutting implements,
If you are making presents, the trick is to choose one or two attainable projects. And perhaps crafting at home just isn’t your thing; there are other options! You can make use of all of the artwork that they bring home from school or there are a number of local businesses where you can craft with your kids on-site. Plus, there are plenty of fun holiday bazaars where your purchases will support resident artists and you can still wrap up plenty of handmade goodness. I’ve got some ideas on all fronts to get you going.

Buy From the Heart Allowing children to select and purchase gifts on their own can be fun. Make a list of loved ones, set a budget, and choose a couple of locations to shop so that you aren’t running around town like crazy. Consider visiting one of the local seasonal craft fairs; we’ve rounded up a list for you! See page 31. Regardless of the route you choose to go, let your littles go crazy with the gift wrapping; my instincts say they’re great with tape!

Laura Jost loves the smell of the noble fir they put in the living room after Thanksgiving. With all of the candy canes, homemade ornaments, advent calendars, carols, and stockings on the mantle, she’s pretty sure that she is more excited than the kids for Christmas morning every year. Pinecone Elf Ornament Last year, one of our favorite crafts was a pinecone elf ornament. It requires only a few supplies, is easy and quick to put together, and people love them!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Medium to large sized pinecones 1” wooden craft balls (no holes) Felted wool or felt Glue (hot glue makes this a snap) Scissors Fine-tipped permanent marker Optional: needle and thread
PUT YOUR ELF TOGETHER:

Glue a wooden ball to the flat side of the pinecone; this ball is now the head of your elf.

Cut a ½ inch strip of felt for the scarf (optional) and a triangle of felt with 3.5 inch sides for the hat.

Optional scarf: Tuck and tie the scarf down around the head; guide ends of the scarf between the pinecone scales. Cut the ends of the scarf to look like fringe.

Stitch or glue two sides of the felt triangle to form the hat.
Place a quarter-size of glue on the inside seam of the hat and tuck the hat down onto the head. Once your hat is secured in place, use a dot of glue to secure the front of the hat.

Use the marker to draw a simple set of eyes and a nose. I personally don’t draw a mouth, but have at it!

Tie to packages as-is or add an optional old-school metal ornament hook to the tip of the hat.

You can customize this craft with the following enhancements: • Sew a bell on the tip of the hat. • Add rosy cheeks with watercolors. • Use pipe cleaners to twist on arms and legs; you can make mittens and boots out of extra felt. • Spray pine cones ahead of time with paint or glitter. • Glue mini-pom pons between scales. • Use cinnamon-scented pine cones. • Make an entire wreath of pinecones and sweet elves.

My 6-year-old son is not going to last the tasting menu at Castagna, but he has proven he’ll behave for a beautifully-presented sweet treat. ‘Tis the season for dressing up and decadence—and special memories, so enjoy it with your children, perhaps at these upscale, child-friendly places. We visited them anew, just for this article, and just for dessert. PAPA HAYDN The East side location of this classic dessert spot (5829 SE Milwaulkie Ave) was opened in 1978, when I was younger than my son, and the West side location (701 NW 23rd Ave) opened when I was about my daughter’s age. I recently took them both to the West side location for a treat and found that it exceeded the memories I had in terms of service, décor, food, and treating children with consideration and respect. The beautiful dessert case contained ice cream and cakes
that were a perfect mix of old-fashioned and contemporary recipes. We settled on a six-layer ice cream cake ($8.95), which came perfectly plated with chocolate, caramel and vanilla sauce for dipping. papahaydn.com

MAURICE “This place is adorable,” my daughter gushed, when we walked into Maurice, an intimate (best for parties of two or three) luncheonette located near Powell’s downtown, at 921 SW Oak St. The restaurant captures perfectly the rustic yet modern continued on p. 24

charm of a casual French restaurant, and appealed enormously to my ‘tween girl. The desserts, like the lunch menu, are a study in quality over quantity. Sit at the counter with your darling, order the Meyer lemon soufflé pudding cake ($6) or a plate of perfect macaroons ($.75 each) and cookies ($1 each), choose from their extensive and exotic selection of warm drinks, and watch the cooks working in the small open kitchen radiate intensity and care with the items they are preparing from their thoughtfully curated menu. It was named one of America’s best new restaurants by Bon Appetit in 2014 but, in true Portland style, is unpretentious and welcoming to patrons of any age. mauricepdx.com

THE CITY GRILL At night, the City Grill may feel like a bit of a scene, but I promise that your kids aren’t going to notice, particularly if you can steal one of the tables with a beautiful view over the city. Even just the ride up to the 30th floor of the building (located at 111 SW 5th Ave), where the restaurant is situated, adds to the excitement for children. The restaurant is sleek and sophisticated and the dessert menu, where items cost between $7 and $12, is extensive enough to find something for just about any palate. portlandcitygrill.com 24 | NW Kids Magazine

THE PIED COW The Pied Cow, located at 3244 SE Belmont, is another old Portland institution, dating back to the early 1990s. A coffee house with a full menu, it specializes in decadent desserts served in a charming and somewhat wacky Victorian setting. (Don’t be put off by the sign advertising Hookahs—that just happens outside.) Inside, chandeliers and draped fabric ceilings will make them feel like they are someplace special. For 12 dollars, three of us shared a rich chocolate fondue, served with marshmallows, apples, bananas, and donut holes for dipping. While the donut holes could have been fresher, portions were very generous (it could have easily served 4 or 5) and a steal compared to the same offering at the Melting Pot ($20 a la carte +$10 per additional person). PIX PATISSERIE Pix patisserie’s desserts, fantastic looking creations garnished with gold or with artful towers of chocolate, inspire wonder in children. Their location on the Eastside 2225 E Burnside is decorated with an eye towards decadence, and the bartenders and experienced enough and patient enough to create a non-alcoholic cocktail that will make your child feel pampered. pixpatisserie.myshopify.com Laura Locker is a native Portlander who has lived and eaten around the world.
