Portland Jewish Academy (pjaproud.org) provides a rich
cultural learning experience for kids from early Theacademic PJAandPerspective childhood through 8th grade. We’ve invited budding writers from the middle school Humanities classes and writing exploratory to join our team for a series that gives you a glimpse into thoughts and life - from their perspective.
What We’re Here For by Maya It’s hard to imagine the world before pain Before death, before grief, Before we felt anything. Here we stand, so much to improve, And yet so strong, Because of what we lose. Because of what we gain. Because of what we cry. Because of our pain. We have grown as beings, And will continue to become more. We understand loss, And we know what we’re here for. Life without death is no life at all. We’d never become stronger. We’d never grow. The happy moments balanced by the sad, An understanding of what we do and don’t have. A balance between life and death. A balance between happy and sad. A balance between light and dark.
Maya is a current sixth-grader at PJA. In addition to writing, she enjoys playing the piano and riding her bike.

Enough Happin ess by Madelon I think life can’t be without light. There are always the fun times and the joyous times. It even seems to follow you. Somehow, you can always end up with at least one happy, memorable thing in your life. You might not recognize it when it’s happening. But, like everything else, there has to be the dark parts. The times you are sad, scared, and in pain. Those are some of the emotions or feelings humans don’t like. That seems to follow you around too. Maybe light and darkness can see each other, or maybe they are angry at each other, because a lot of bad things happen too. And maybe they can’t balance themselves out, so darkness takes over. A lot of people say they don’t have enough happiness in life. Maybe they don’t really treasure the moments; they don’t cherish those memories. But guess what? The point of life is to live. That can be different for everyone. And when you live, light and darkness will come with you, follow you around. You have to learn to live with it, and when you do, your life will be better than before you knew, before you recognized. So, when you feel the darkness slithering through your window, don’t shut it out. Invite it in for a while. Talk with it. Observe it. And when it leaves, you will be wiser. Maybe you can learn from darkness. Maybe it’s not as bad as you think it is. And remember to treasure the good moments in your life. That is the light part. And you can learn from it too. Madelon is a current sixth-grader at PJA. In addition to writing, she enjoys playing with dogs and reading murder mysteries.
