EDITORS’
Corner
There is something so satisfying about saying goodbye to the old and having a date to start anew. While we’ve never been big on resolutions, we like the idea of goal setting for the coming year and striving to find balance in our busy lives. Do you set goals at the beginning of each year with your family? On this year’s list, weekly meal planning, painting the house, taking a family Ukulele class we keep rescheduling, and treating ourselves to a giant sunny road trip to daydream about during the rainy months. Fingers crossed we can get to it all! This month we feature ways to kick off your new year from where to take your kids to express themselves creatively to how to get started or refresh your workout routine. Be sure to check out the article on Portland Child Art Studio on p. 8 and our new Mama Fitness column where we will focus on ways to improve your health in 2015. We start off the series with a focus on barre3 and an interview with Founder Sadie Lincoln on p. 14. The January issue also marks our first School Open House Guide of the year, so if you’re just starting on school tours, you can use this resource to find out more about our school partners. And finally, our 3rd annual kids coloring contest starts on January 15th. Your kids’ art could be featured on the March cover of NW Kids. Fostering Creativity: PORTLAND CHILD ART STUDIO by KELLEY GARDINER
Paint covers the walls in drips and splotches. Children wearing aprons mix up new colors with gentle guidance from a teacher. Kids are transforming cardboard tubes into fantastical creatures, representations of people and objects are being rendered in every possible medium. Welcome to the Portland Child Art Studio. Since 2012, this art studio inside the NW Children’s Theater and School has been providing a safe place for kids to get messy and express themselves. “Our studio provides a space for children to joyfully express their creative and artistic selves, “building a foundation for a life long relationship with art,” says Devon Mitchell, Co-founder and Executive Director. “PCAS teachers introduce kids to new materials and techniques, but what the kids make here comes entirely from their own imaginations. And nothing is more magical and surprising than a child’s imagination.”

The Portland Child Art Studio supports children in their journey of creating art. Learning through trial and error, getting messy, thinking in new ways, getting frustrated, and problem solving are all part of the process. Here, young artists aren’t coaxed or boxed in. They’re free to explore, provided they’re respectful of the materials, themselves, and each other. Classes, workshops, and open studio times are offered for children ages three and up. Classes are offered quarterly, with 10-week or 4-week sessions for parents who wish or need to make a shorter commitment. Class sizes are small, capped at about ten children. You won’t see specific projects or mediums in most of the class descriptions. Instead, you’ll see “Art Class 3-5 Years” or “Girls’ Art Club 10+” as the descriptors. This reflects the studio’s focus on letting children make discoveries themselves, rather than encouraging a certain style or outcome. continued on p. 10

making art rather than being focused on their finished product.” Bring a snack and clothes that can get messy, and then try to stay calm when paint and glue get everywhere! A discounted suggested donation of $5 is available for families who receive public assistance. Just bring your Oregon Trail Card or other proof of eligibility.
Drop-ins are sometimes available for classes on a case-by-case basis as well, if there’s room. Call or email ahead of time to check in. The first drop-in class fee is $10, an accessible starting point for parents unsure if their child will make good use of the class time. Each drop-in thereafter is $25 per class. Workshops bring a more specific focus to the artist’s final product. Currently, kids ages five and older can learn about handmaking clay and glazing techniques at “Mud Maker Mondays” facilitated by a local ceramic artist. Parents can even get in on the action, with the option to “stay and play” for half the price of their little ones. Bond with your child as you learn along with them, show them that it’s okay to make mistakes, and teach by example rather than telling. Watch for occasional daylong workshops and events on days that Portland Public Schools are out. During open studio times, children ages two and up can create while accompanied by a parent or caregiver. It’s just $10 for unlimited supplies, excluding any firing fees for clay. Children have access to all the materials of the studio, but are encouraged to use only as much as they need to explore their artistic visions. Once there, parents are encouraged to relax and “watch their child’s process of 10 | NW Kids Magazine
Would your young Picasso like to get their friends together for an arty party? Birthday parties are available for booking on Saturdays and Sundays. Birthday boys and girls ages three and up can enjoy an “artsy birthday of pure creativity, joy, and mess” with instructorled activities based on whatever your child desires. Throwing paint-soaked cotton balls at the wall? Yes! For younger children, an instructor can facilitate an activity that keeps short attention spans interested, like storytelling and “play-based drawing.” Older kids usually choose to work on a certain project. It’s up to you and your kids, to create whatever their heart desires. Birthday parties can also include professional photography packages. Portland Child Art Studio is a nonprofit organization. Donations support their programming, as well as scholarships for low-income children. In-kind donations of household materials, recyclable materials, and art items are accepted and very much appreciated. What else are you going to do with those ribbons you’re never going to use? Tin cans, paper towel rolls, sponges, buttons, and corks can all become art in the hands, and in the vision, of a child. Finding Balance the barre3 Way:
An Interview with Sadie Lincoln It’s the new year, which usually has mamas thinking about fitness goals for the coming months. If you need a jump start to working out or if you’ve simply been curious about trying a barre3 class, it’s a great time to do it! As someone who gets bored quickly and is frequently switching up my workouts to maintain interest, I can say that barre3 has been a welcome change. The workouts vary, while staying true to barre3 principles, and each class is challenging and fun. I usually leave a class feeling energized and the stress I walk in to the studio with just melts away through a series of movements designed to balance the body and build strength. Instructors are very supportive to newbies, and if you have kids in tow, most studios offer childcare. I recently had a chance to interview barre3 founder, Sadie Lincoln. As a wife, mother, business owner, teacher and recently, an author; Sadie is no stranger to busy. She has expertly created a warm and inviting community busy moms (and dads) are flocking to, and here’s what she had to say: What inspired you to open your first barre3 studio? Being present with my two kids and my husband was my number one motivation. I put the childcare area into my first studio at the barre3 Pearl location so that I could bring my then 2 and 3-year-olds with me when I worked out. This idea stuck and now the vast majority of my studios include childcare. How does barre3 differ from other Barre workouts? Our clients tell me that our community and our commitment to whole body health are two things that stand out for them. My entire team rallies around the idea that exercise is not the only answer to being healthy and happy. What is most important is living a balanced life and taking care of you all day. And, sometimes that means skipping your workout 14 | NW Kids Magazine
to have a glass of wine with a friend or a much needed nap! Is barre3 a workout for moms who have recently given birth? Always check with your doctor first, but yes our classes are very popular with new moms. We are big fans of offering many modifications to help new moms bounce back and re-balance their bodies. What about working parents who have limited time to work out, or those who are new to working out? We are all so busy! I started online workouts in 2012 because as my company started to grow I was working longer hours and struggling to fit it all in myself ! Our online workouts range from 10 to 60 minutes. The healthiest and happiest people I know are continued on p. 16

not those who always get a long hard-hitting workout in. They are people who move all day and take a balanced approach to exercise and whole body health. Even my longer 30, 40 and 60 minute online workouts are broken into mini 10 minute workouts so you can do them in short bursts throughout your day. I wrote a book called “Love Your Lower Body” that outlines a plan to workout 10 minutes at a time and make exercise and eating healthy something that fits into your life—whether you are a busy executive or someone who hasn’t exercised in years. Is barre3 a personalized fitness program? Yes. We have a saying at barre3 to “make it your own.” Our instructors are coaches but each client is his or her own best teacher. We believe in empowering each individual to personalize the workout to be challenging yet feel good. What is the difference between a foundations class and a regular barre3 class? In Foundations we hold postures longer and focus on detailed alignment. We cue more breath in foundations and move slower. This is a great class for beginners to really understand each posture. It is equally beneficial for seasoned barre3 practitioners. In fact my most advanced clients sweat the most in foundations because they learn how to go even deeper in each posture. Can parents bring their kids to a barre3 studio? Yes! Our barre3 Pearl, barre3 Williams, and barre3 Southeast studios all offer childcare for select times. We love our barre3 kids! What is the best way to start barre3? A lovely way to get acquainted with barre3 is to check us out online. This way you can get familiar with our moves in the comfort of your home and even during nap time! But nothing beats a live class. If you are concerned that you aren’t flexible, coordinated or fit enough to keep up, know that these are universal concerns for anyone trying a new mode of exercise. We will take good care of you! Sign up for class 16 | NW Kids Magazine
online and come in 15 minutes early (especially if you are bringing your kids). We will show you around and get you set up. Our community of existing clients loves shepherding new clients into the mix as well. We really do have an incredibly warm community here in Portland. How quickly can people typically expect to see results? Come three times a week for a month and you will see visible results. This class works to quickly shape and tone the entire body. The invisible results are the ones I am most proud of though. One of our clients, Annie, calls them “off the scale victories” like increased energy, sleeping better, and fighting the baby blues. What’s in store for barre3 this year? We are absolutely excited about our January challenge! Definitely check it out. It incorporates classes with amazing healthy recipes developed by amazing local chefs like Abby Fammartino. January is a great month to get started with a barre3 challenge. Challenges are fun, effective and totally doable for busy parents. This 4-week, better-living intensive combines stepped up workouts, healthy recipes and support from Sadie and her team of Master Trainers. Clients who stick with it can expect to experience significant weight loss, gain lean muscle and lay the groundwork for healthier, more balanced living year round. And if you live on the west side, watch for the opening of barre3’s 5th Portland area studio in Cedar Mill. They’ll offer childcare and classes for mamas and kiddos in that area. SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE GUIDE Let’s face it. Figuring out where to send your kids to school in Portland can be a bit of a challenge. As parents just starting the process, you may be asking yourself all kinds of questions about what will be the best fit for your family. How important is preschool? What kind of preschool? What’s the lottery? Will the lottery exist next year? Charter? Private or public? Homeschooling? Over the last few years, we have been in the trenches of figuring it all out, and while it took some time, tons of school tours and a couple of switcheroos, we have found seemingly good fits for our families. How and what did we choose? Some of our kids attend their neighborhood schools, some focus option and some immersion. It’s a mix based on the needs of each of our families. And really, there is no right way or perfect solution to figuring it out. You know what’s best for your kids and family, and that should guide you. One piece of advice, if any, might be to start early and don’t get discouraged. The NW Kids Open House Guide, published three times a year, is designed to offer you some information about our school partners. In this month’s guide you will find over 30 schools, their descriptions, ratio and tuition information, and when the school will hold their winter open houses, so you can check them out, and gather more information. We hope this resource will answer some of your questions, and at the very least will give you an idea of what is out there. Chances are you haven’t heard of all of these schools and it might point you in a direction you didn’t know you were headed.
