Editor’s Note Happy New Year! Here’s to hoping that your holiday season was filled with peace, meaningful traditions, delicious food, and (of course) time spent with loved ones. As we pack away our holiday decorations and plan for the year ahead, this is a perfect time to start thinking about the 2019-2020 school year. Whether you’re just starting to look at preschool programs, thinking about a change for your school-aged child, or just want to see what your options are for the future, our January Open House Guide is a fantastic place to start. Hopefully you will visit an Open House or Info Night and find exactly the right fit for your family. And if Winter Break has you feeling a bit cooped up, head straight to pg. 25 for a look at what your local rec center can do to get your family moving again! Cheers,
Mary

Are We Free?
Gratefulness by Nicolas Chapin Gratefulness, an odd word The scratch of a serrated knife on stone Pride, a soaring eagle Power, a wand of conduction Life, a gift Death, a consequence Slavery, a weight Freedom, lift-off Bang, a gunshot Black, white, gray The puzzle pieces that put together America Scattered But it’s the pieces, the people That make it up, to put it back Together For that I’m grateful.
by Sunaina Arora I am thankful for the people Who look up at the moonlight Together. For the life we have. I am thankful for the love And hate that goes around I am thankful that we Are free yet our hands Are bound. For the names we get Called and the names We don’t. For the darkness That falls after the brightness Blinds us. Sunaina Arora is a sixth-grader at PJA. In addition to being a poet, Sunaina plays the violin and speaks fluent Hindi at home.
Nicolas Chapin is a sixth-grader at PJA who enjoys writing poetry and stories. In his free time, he also drums and speaks fluent French with his mom.
