Editor’s Note Happy New Year! As we all know, 2021 was a difficult year in many ways. While we navigated through the continuing threat of Covid, our lives saw more “pivoting” than we could have previously imagined. From work and social adaptations to whole new ways of keeping our children actively engaged in ever-changing education scenarios, it felt at times like there was a new challenge around each corner. While life is still far from our pre-Covid norm, this new year brings glimmers of hope and the joy of finding new traditions amidst uncertainty. Here at NW Kids, we are beyond ecstatic about our return to print! This is our second School Open House Guide of the 20212022 school year. Take a look and sign up for some tours (either virtual or in-person). We’re sure that there is the perfect school for your family within these pages. From the NW Kids family to yours, our hope is that your family finds peace and renewal in 2022. We can’t wait to see you around town soon! Cheers,
Mary

Portland Jewish Academy (pjaproud.org) provides a rich
academic cultural learning experience for kids from early The PJAandPerspective childhood through 8th grade. We’ve invited budding writers from the middle school Humanities classes and writing exploratory to join our team for a series that gives you a glimpse into thoughts and life - from their perspective.
Shining Through the Storm by Sunny Her name tells of how it was with her: revolutionary rebellious hope streaming through her veins, as if the sun was in her blood defiantly herself through the darkest of days a battle not easily won her light stays on for the weary she followed a traveler stuck in a storm outside the wind seemed to never blow out her torch as she stood against the rain she sang a soulful tune whistling when she couldn’t speak humming when she couldn’t breathe still, her light shines on Sunny is a current eighth-grader at the Portland Jewish Academy. In addition to writing, she enjoys acting, crafting, and reading.
Strolls Through Words by Zoe
Her name tells of how it was with her. She lives in a world created by words and crisp pages. Words are her guide through the wandering pathways of life. They are her map and compass That travel with her into uncharted territory. Without words, she is lost and directionless. No explorer can be without a compass, Just as she cannot be without her words. She places words as she goes, They are the stepping stones that keep her from falling. With words, there is no place she cannot go, No mountain she cannot climb, And no river she cannot cross. Every so often she begins to slip, Losing her grip from that high up ledge, But at the last moment, her words pull her up. Sometimes she stumbles over her words, Stepping carelessly and placing her foot into thin air, Forgetting that even words are not perfect. From time to time she is left alone With no words to comfort her. These are the saddest days, The ones where it seems as if a better day will never come. It seems as if silence has finally taken over. But even on the quietest nights, there is always a word. Zoe is a current eighth-grader at the Portland Jewish Academy. In addition to writing, she enjoys reading, ballet, and piano. NW Kids Magazine | 21
