Welcome the NW Kids Neighborhood Guide for 2012-13. Recently, we were at our neighborhood park and met a sweet family who had just moved here from out of state. They were so excited to be here and were thrilled at the endless possibilities for good food, shopping, and having family fun in their new city. It made us realize that sometimes we may take for granted all that we have in Portland. Each section of the city is filled to the brim with great neighborhoods and limitless opportunities to grab a bite of healthy food, hit a park or peruse an area farmers market. We really do feel lucky to live within walking distance or a short bus or bike ride from having a unique and pleasurable experience. This is precisely why we wanted to create a neighborhood guide for families; to offer a resource you can have at the ready for those days when you return to a neighborhood you haven’t been to in a while, if you’re new to the area or rarely make it to the east or West sides of the Willamette river. Be sure to check out our new Fairs & Festivals category in each section for a few upcoming events, and the listings for local parks, great shopping and a pretty extensive list of where to get a sweet treat in Portland. We love making a day out of exploring a new neighborhood. There are new things to discover every time we head out. We hope the NW Kids Neighborhood Guide will send you and your family on your merry way to having fun in our fair city. If you have a favorite spot we haven’t mentioned, feel free to tweet us or share your favorites on our facebook fan page, facebook.com/nwkidsmag. — Kelley and Beth

Urban & Suburban Playcare:
We Village by Jana Wingate
So you’ve had an adult only day planned for weeks and at the last minute your babysitter calls and says she’s sick. What are you going to do? You certainly don’t want to cancel, but you need a break! Well there’s a cure for your predicament, a lifesaver of a place called We Village. We Village is a drop-in daycare, or as they prefer to be called, a playcare facility located in the Pearl, and soon to be opening a second location at Orenco Station. I quickly realize why they would prefer to be known as a playcare facility, instead of just a standard daycare. From the moment you walk into the Pearl location it is quite obvious that We Village is above and beyond your typical daycare. There is of course the standard television set, movies, toys, books and art center, but they’ve also included a slide which my daughter ran to immediately. Although the Pearl location is cozy, holding only 15 kids at a time in the play area, they will be expanding within the next month to include up to 30 kids. The Orenco Station location will be quite a spectacular site unto itself. With the opening planned for August, Orenco will include a play structure with tunnels, dress-up clothes and little nooks and crannies for kids to explore. This location will also include up to 30 kids at a time with ages ranging from six weeks to 12 years old.
18 | NW Kids Magazine
According to Mariah Martin, Assistant Director for We Village, the main goal is to make the kids feel at ease when coming into the facility, even when the Pearl location expands and Orenco Station opens, “with the bigger spaces we worried how are the transitions going to go, but at the same time it’s not that big of a space and it is still cozy and comforting.” They are open late on Friday and Saturday and even do special themed nights for kids to enjoy. “We turn on the music and the kids can dance,” Martin said regarding their Saturday night dance parties, “we have glow sticks in the drawer, because, why not!” What also sets We Village apart is the fact that they specialize in preschool classes, in summer and during the school year, promoting early childhood academics in a small size classroom. With only seven kids per class, they focus not only on academics, but social and adaptive skills, readying children for kindergarten. Owner Karen Beninati has really created something special with We Village, a place where children can have fun and make new friends, and parents can feel at ease with their kids being well cared for while they get some time to themselves. For more information, visit, wevillage.com. Jana is the Mother of 4 year old Rowyn, and lives with her Husband and Daughter in North Portland. She graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a BA Degree in Journalism.
