Editor’s Note My first recollection of visiting Portland was a stopover on a high school road trip to San Francisco in the spring of 1991. I couldn’t believe it when the elderly Latin teacher who was driving our van let us, his rowdy group of teenage charges, loose into the vastness of Powell’s City of Books with only a wave and an approximate time to reconvene. Growing up in Seattle, Portland always held a certain mystique for me. It wasn’t until 2006, when I moved here with my husband and newborn daughter, that I began to truly explore the city. 12 years later (and with that newborn daughter heading off to 6th grade Outdoor School next week!) I am still learning and exploring. I hope that the discovery of new sights and sounds and tastes never ends. If that’s possible, I guess maybe that is the mark of a truly great city. Welcome to (June in) Portland! Cheers!

Mary

Raising Global Citizens by AFTON NELSON

Technology has put the world at our fingertips, and making connections with people from different cultural backgrounds is now a common occurrence. It is perfectly reasonable to assume that our children will be working, living and interacting with the citizens of the world, whether in this country, or another. Because of this, a cultural education is an important part of this generation’s development and there are many ways today’s parents are making this happen. Language lessons, participating in local cultural traditions, books, travel, art, and conversation all allow our kids to gain this rich layer of learning. Participating in a student exchange program is another way to help children develop a knowledge of and appreciation for other cultures, and make life-long friends along the way. Whether your host a student in your home, or send your own child off on an international adventure, student exchanges can provide an invaluable global education.

What makes a good host family? Sara Bruckner, Deputy Director at ANDEO International Homestays says, “good host families have an eagerness to connect across cultures and help to someone from another country feel welcomed and included.” Rather than big excursions or exciting outings, daily interaction like cooking and eating together, playing games and sports, doing projects, talking, and laughing that really make students feel at home. 12 | NW Kids Magazine

“Having a stranger in the home is probably awkward for most. We’ve done it many times and still get nervous before arrival,” said Thomas Darby and Marcia Smith, who hosted a student through ANDEO. They admit that while it can be disruptive to the daily routine, there are many rewards. “We beam when telling our friends about our experiences.”

What makes a good teen traveler? Open-minded teens that are ready to extend themselves beyond their comfort zone make great exchange students. Bruckner says, “students should have at least two years of a language to be able to fully participate in their host families’ lives.” And if your families has hosted exchange students, teens will have a deeper understanding of what the experience will be like. Feedback from host families and teen travelers reveal the benefits go beyond a cultural education. “Kids learn to look outside themselves,” Bruckner says. “They can work through differences, exercise patience, take responsibility for another’s well-being, and help someone feel included.” She adds, “teens who go abroad report gaining resiliency, a personal connection to the larger world, and an understanding that there are many ways to live a life.” If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a host family, or if you have a teen who wants to participate in an exchange here are a few local organizations to connect with.

ANDEO International Homestays ANDEO is a nonprofit organization specializing in short educational and immersion homestay programs since 1981. Hosting opportunities: Host teens from Spain, France, and Germany, and college students from Japan for 3-4 weeks in July or August. All programs include a homestay with a welcoming host family. Contact: 503-274-1776 | info@andeo.org andeo.org

Cultural Homestay International Our Academic Year Program is a cultural exchange between American host families and international students coming to the US to study for a semester or an academic year. We believe building these meaningful relationships is the best way to create a more peaceful world. Hosting opportunities: There are hosting opportunities throughout the tri-county area and SW Washington to host students from all over the world.
