Editor’s Note Happy June, friends! Is it just me or does June sneak up on us each year? If you have kids in school, you too are feeling that end-of-the-year press. Field trips and Field Days and lice scares, oh my! But then... sweet, sweet, summer! Whether your family enjoys a great music fest, a trip to the coast, or being lulled to sleep by the croaking and chirping of frogs under a clear Oregon sky, we are lucky enough to have it! And as we celebrate Pride Month and reflect on heading into the middle of 2019, I know I’m taking a bit more time to truly appreciate the beautiful differences that make up who we are as a collective whole. My kids roll their eyes when I tell them to imagine if we all looked the same and felt the same and enjoyed the same things. “We knowwwwwwww, Mom. We would be bored and there would be a shortage of everything we think is good.” Eye rolls or not, I am going to keep saying it. Cheers,

Mary

Is a Student Exchange Program Right for Your Family? by KELLEY GARDINER

Most of us are a bit familiar with student exchange programs — maybe we remember a visiting student in our classrooms in high school. If your child is looking to expand their horizons, there are opportunities to explore the world as an exchange student. And if you have a little extra space, you can bring the world to you as a host. Here’s how.

Hosting Hosting an exchange student can bring the world to your door. When you’re done, “you’ve got an international friendship,” says Jeff Laband of Northwest Student Exchange. continued on p. 24

NW Kids Magazine | 23

IS MY FAMILY ELIGIBLE? AFS-USA “welcomes all families that are willing and able to provide a safe and loving home.” You’ll be hosting a high school student, but it’s okay if your kids are younger. WHAT DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE? It will vary depending on the organization you go through, but generally you’ll be expected to provide a safe place to sleep and three square meals a day. Students will have their own health insurance, cell phone and pocket money. Naturally, you’ll want to provide the loving support and guidance you’d want your own kids to have in the same situation, with some fun activities planned along the way. CAN WE TRY A SHORTER HOSTING STINT FIRST? That’s a great idea, especially to see how your family dynamics change with a guest. Check around for a program that needs short-term hosts for new arrivals. You can also try out a summer program through ANDEO.

AFS-USA

Sending Your Student Abroad From Hong Kong to Egypt to Iceland, there are plenty of opportunities for high schoolers to experience another culture. Students often talk about feeling “transformed” or growing into a new person after their experiences — a beautiful way to complement their growth into adults. Students usually don’t get to choose an exact placement, so flexibility and a sense of adventure are necessary.

Common Questions Answered WHAT ABOUT SAFETY FOR MY CHILD? Host families are vetted, and most organizations will include 24-hour emergency assistance in their fee. Drinking and other risky activities aren’t allowed. Talk to your student about how they might feel some discomfort in their new environment, but they should feel safe and able to speak up for themselves. WILL THEY STILL BE ABLE TO GRADUATE ON TIME? It’s important to talk to teachers and a guidance counselor early in the process, probably before you apply, to make sure that your school can accept credits from other counties. Not all schools are created equal — which is why you’re doing this, after all — but no one wants that kind of surprise. WHAT DOES IT COST? An initial fee will be charged that might cover international airfare, hosting and meals, and all the required insurance. Student families are responsible for any required passport or visa fees, and some spending money. Take a look at all the particulars before you sign up. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY GET THERE? You can expect that your student will be met at the airport. Sometimes you’ll meet a group and go to an orientation right away, and sometimes they’ll be picked up by the host family and taken straight to the host’s community. DO THEY HAVE TO GO FOR A WHOLE YEAR? Normally you can choose from a summer language program (where students might be housed in a dorm) or an academic year.

Cross-Cultural Kids Whether you invite a student into your home, or you send your kiddo to soak in another culture, participating in a student exchange program will teach you and your kids about how much difference and similarity all humans share. That’s a lesson we can all learn again and again, but is especially important for kids as they grow into global citizens. “The tiniest exposure to the outside world will change your entire life,” says Carol Whitaker, AFS-USA Volunteer. “Your community will grow in so many unfathomable ways. Don’t let your ‘oh-so-busy’ schedule prevent you from welcoming a new adventure into your life. Exchange students make our lives and our communities so much richer and more vibrant.” Kelley Gardiner writes winning copy for Portland’s small businesses when she’s not toting her two boys to farmer’s markets and libraries. kelleygardiner.com.
