Editor’s Note Fall is in full swing, at long last! With tricks and treats behind us, it’s time to start gearing up for the upcoming holidays. While we truly believe in celebrating one holiday at a time and not rushing into the December holidays before Thanksgiving, now is the time to start planning for winter break. If you are signing your kids up for a camp during the school break, our Winter Break Camp Resource Guide will tell you all you need to know to make the right choice. Also in this issue: a fantastic IVF and surrogacy guide and a calendar of November holiday events. I can practically taste the hot cocoa at ZooLights already! Cheers,

The PJA Perspective Portland Jewish Academy (pjaproud.org) provides a rich academic and cultural learning experience for kids from early childhood through 8th grade. We’ve invited budding journalists from PJA’s writing club for 5th-7th graders to join our team for a series that gives you a glimpse into thoughts and life – from their perspective.
Why I Plarn by MARYN MOREAU
I am a kid who loves doing service learning. I am a girl that loves to help. I am the kid helping teach parents to plarn in the morning; that is me. I do plarning because I LOVE helping people, and plarning definitely does that job. At Portland Jewish Academy, there are so many opportunities to do service learning, and I love it! I help with the process of making plarn by getting the bags ready. What is plarn? Plarn is plastic bags made into yarn. With that yarn, people crochet and knit waterproof and pest-free sleeping mats for people who are homeless. These plarn mats have amazing insulation and help a lot in Portland, Oregon’s homeless community. Why do I help make plarn? As I mentioned before, I love doing service learning. This summer, I volunteered at the Neighborhood House Food Pantry in Multnomah Village. I also helped sort school supplies at a local news station for kids and teachers who need them. I love helping so much in my community because it makes me feel happy, and it makes me feel like I am helping to do my part for the world.
Maryn Moreau is currently a new sixth grader at Portland Jewish Academy. When she is not busy helping others in need, she enjoys gymnastics, cooking, reading, writing, and volunteering at preschools in Portland. Maryn believes that it should be a piece of everybody’s life to help in the community.

BITS & BYTES The Premiere of The Magic Cloth opens with ZooZoo on December 7 Imago Theatre collaborates with Michael Curry, co-designer of puppets and masks of Disney’s Broadway hit The Lion King “I saw a production that Michael produced in the early 2000’s at the Keller. To my amazement, a red cloth about 10’ square seemed to move and glide through the stage without any mechanism or strings or method I could detect. I had been studying illusions and creating them for decades but this one really surprised and mystified me. Years later, I was fortunate to become acquainted with Michael. I asked him if he would share his secret with me. He did better. I went out to his amazing studio in St. Helens. Michael not only shared his secret, he gave me permission to use the effect. Quite generous from a legendary artist. For months, we’ve been in our lab creating The Magic Cloth, a 10-minute piece that will be presented in ZooZoo between the two acts of our menagerie of creatures,” says Jerry Mouawad, Artistic Co-Director of Imago. With the Magic Cloth, Imago is bringing back to Portland its globe-trotting production ZooZoo this holiday season. It returns with bug eyes, hippos with insomnia, arrogant anteaters, introverted frogs, paradoxical polar bears, acrobatic worms, self-touting accordions and tricky penguins filling the stage with wonder, awe and humor. ZooZoo has toured internationally since 2009, following on the heels of Imago’s signature work FROGZ. Recommended for ages 3 and older.
