Editor’s Note October at long last! Having made it through September and the chaos of a new school year starting, this is when we really find fall’s sweet spot. Brisk mornings, leaves crunching beneath boots and of course the ubiquitous pumpkin spice... well, everything! In my house, October is mainly about Halloween preparations and to be perfectly honest, I started getting my spider web and bat decorations out of storage at the beginning of September. With all of the stresses and challenges that we all face, any opportunity to extend traditions that bring joy are more than welcome in my house. We are so lucky to live in a region that sees a true change of seasons. Apple picking, pumpkin patches and harvest festivals abound and I already have a couple new spots to hit this year (see pages 12-13!). But October isn’t all about fun-size Twix bars and fresh pressed apple cider. This is also when we start planning ahead for the 2019-2020 school year. The Portland area has so many wonderful schools, from toddler age all the way through high school. Our kids are unique and education is not one-size-fits-all. From Waldorf and Montessori to language immersion and more traditional options, we have put together a guide that is sure to pique your interest. Take a look at some websites, attend a few open houses and explore. You never know what you might find. And for goodness’ sake, don’t be that house that gives out the yogurt covered raisins! Cheers!

The PJA Perspective Portland Jewish Academy (pjaproud.org) provides a rich academic and cultural learning experience for kids from early childhood through 8th grade. We’ve invited budding journalists from PJA’s writing club for 6th-8th graders to join our team for a series that gives you a glimpse into thoughts and life – from their perspective.

A Red World by Jonathan Williams

I walk through this red world, watching in silence I walk through this red world, poppy and bright, and through the light, I see the beauty behind it I walk through this red world, no matter what’s behind I walk through this red world, strolling with my friends

The Yellow Flower by Gloria Jin

Fleeting, toxic, a dandelion, every gardener’s worst fear, they say. A useless yellow flower, that turns white, to make wishes on. Beaming, radiant, a dandelion, everyone’s favorite flower, I say. A golden-white mini-sun, to admire.

I walk through this red world, never knowing when it will stop I walk through this red world, between the remains of roses I walk through this red world, as I hear the blooming birds I walk through this red, jumbled, dripping world, leaving the water behind

Jonathan is a current sixth grader at the Portland Jewish Academy. Outside of school, he enjoys hiking, watching films, roller skating, and being in water. Gloria is a current sixth grader at the Portland Jewish Academy. Outside of school, she enjoys swimming, ice skating, and frisbee-throwing.
