Editor’s Note
I grew up in a family that took birthdays pretty seriously. It wasn’t about buying extravagant gifts or throwing over-the-top parties, but if it was your birthday you always got to choose the direction of the day. As opposed to other holidays, which were special in their own right, birthdays were the day that was just about people letting you know that they were happy that you were born. It was just as simple as that. Ice cream for breakfast? Sure! Pancakes for dinner? Of course! Movie marathon? Yes!
The one exception to this rule was during my birthdays that were spent on the Long Beach Peninsula. My grandpa fished during the month of August and he and his buddies rented out an old hotel for that month. As I was born in late August, my earliest birthday memories are from that old hotel. The kids would explore the dunes and the beach during the day and then try to listen in on the adult conversations at night. Birthdays in Long Beach meant that breakfast included Polish sausage and dinner included salmon. Birthday cake? Well, that was easy. My grandma Mary’s favorite pie was lemon meringue and nobody made a lemon meringue pie like My Mom’s Pie in Long Beach, Washington. Marsh’s Free Museum (famous for Jake the Alligator Man) sold “Surprise Packages,” which were newspaper-wrapped boxes full of shells and knickknacks and postcards and, one year, a commemorative ashtray. Just what every 5-year-old needs! Were Polish sausage, salmon and lemon meringue pie my favorite foods? No. But I would not trade those early birthday memories for all of the French toast and pizza and chocolate cake in the world! That old hotel was torn down in the 1980’s, but my family still stays on the same property, in the condominiums that were built shortly before my grandpa passed away. As I write this, I’m preparing to celebrate my 43rd birthday there with my mom and with my own kids, who have also spent many birthdays making memories there. Does your family have special birthday party traditions? Do they change from year to year or are they set in stone? Regardless of how you celebrate birthdays, we hope that you’ll find something to add to the celebration in our 2018-2019 Birthday Party Guide. Maybe a new venue, or a new bakery to create your child’s favorite cake or treat? Tell us what you find and what your cherished traditions are! (And don’t worry, my grandma went in to personally complain about that ashtray in my Surprise Package...) .
Mary

Coming of Age Traditions
from around the world by BRIANNA WHEELER
A child’s initiation into adulthood can arrive at various ages depending on a number of factors, including culture, religion, heritage, and ethnicity. For some, coming of age involves an extravagant celebration, for others, it involves a somber ancestral ceremony, and for many, it involves both. These coming of age traditions may have varied roots, but they all achieve the similar goal of ushering children into adulthood while honoring tradition, faith, heritage, and family. Quinceañera
Bat/Bar Mitzvah
The fiesta de quince años is a jubilant combination of Spanish-Catholic, Aztec, and indigenous traditions that celebrate a girl’s 15th birthday and formal introduction to womanhood. A few 21st-century twists make this ancestral tradition a contemporary affair, including relaxed rules around dancing, a dress code not limited to white and pink, and the birthday girl’s freedom to assign damas and chambelans (female and male attendants) at her own discretion. Quinceañeras honor a girl’s transition into womanhood with the same pomp and grandeur as lavish debutante balls or extravagant sweet 16 parties.
According to Jewish law, boys become B’nai Mitzvah at 13 years old while girls become B’not Mitzvah at the age of 12 (or 13 in Reform congregations). It’s typically on the first Shabbat after this milestone birthday that the joyous celebration takes place. The day’s festivities begin with a ceremony that includes the honoree reading from the Torah for their congregation, signifying their transition to adulthood and their acceptance of the responsibilities therein. The ceremony concludes with a rollicking celebration that includes synagogue members as well as gentile friends and family.

Inuit Coming of Age
Rumspringa
The Inuit people of Canada’s North Baffin Islands rely heavily on their hunting and fishing skills as their harsh arctic environment cannot support traditional farming. In the Inuit Coming of Age Ceremony, boys and girls age 11-12 set off to test their hunting skills and acclimatize themselves to the harsh arctic weather in a ceremony that can last for several days. To prepare them for adulthood, a Shaman initiates the hunting ritual by establishing communication between the hunters and the animals. Then camps of children set out into the wilderness to hunt and develop traditional skills, often engaging in multiple trips before achieving the perfect hunt.
Many Amish and Mennonite communities purposefully separate themselves from modern culture as a part of their faith, but the traditional rite of passage, Rumspringa, offers younger members of the church (around 16 years old) the chance to experience as much of western culture as they desire - as hedonistic as it may be - before deciding whether or not they want to become baptised into the church as adults. Rumspringa ends when the young adults in question return to the church for baptism, which approximately 90% of them do.
Seijin No Hi
Photograph by DICK THOMAS JOHNSON
Japan’s official Coming of Age Day occurs annually on the second Monday of January. Though Seijin No Hi only dates back to 1948, coming of age rituals have been a part of Japanese culture since 714 AD. For centuries, the age of those who participated in these ceremonies fluctuated in accordance with assigned gender, status and politics and could be anywhere between 10 and 20 years old. Historically, children of aristocrats were the main focus of Seijin No Hi and its Tang Dynasty influenced precursor, Genpuku, but modern Coming of Age Day celebrations commemorate all newly minted 20-year-olds, regardless of status.
