Editor’s Note While spring is here, it is certainly not the spring that we in Portland, the nation and across the world would have anticipated. We are all doing our best to adhere to changing circumstances and mandates while also keeping our kids, families, communities and ourselves safe and secure - both physically and mentally. Here at NW Kids we are watching many of our beloved advertising partners try to weather the storm, with canceled or postponed openings, events, classes, performances, etc... We ourselves are trying to explore creative ways to safely continue being the resource that we have been to local families for so many years. That said, we truly feel that we will get through this together as we always do in Portland - as a community. May you and yours remain safe and secure during this unprecedented time in our lives. We look forward to seeing you around town just as soon as the seas settle. In the meantime, please keep an eye on our website and social media (as well as those of our partners) for the most up to date information, as things are rapidly changing at this time. With Gratitude and Hope,

That Is No More by Talia W. We all sit around the bed, crying He presses his dying face against mine He purrs in my arms as he’s falling asleep A long, deep sleep My brother is not in the room Instead, he is playing on a screen Ferris’ meowing sister is watching, as he takes his last breaths My dad gets up to bring the needle I start to sob more My mom wants me out, but my dad says stay The needle is ready I’m crying harder than before I give him a kiss and shut my eyes I hear a meow And then it is silenced Just the sound of sobs, as we sit around the cat that is no more

Starry Night by Maya Z. stars smile down at me as my body relaxes onto the soft, muddy ground, my body folding and creasing, green spikes sitting triumphantly on top of the hill I lie on stars comfort and cradle me, making the stretching blackness seem warm and soft

Talia is a current sixth grader at PJA. Along with writing, she enjoys curling up and playing with her pets. Maya is a current sixth-grader at PJA. She is an aspiring writer and artist.
